2017 Nissan Rogue problems
The Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan. It made its debut in October 2007 for the 2008 model year. Beginning in 2013 for the 2014 model year, the model has been merged with the X-Trail sold outside the North American market, making them identical. It is currently Nissan's best-selling vehicle in the United States.
As of 2023, the Rogue was manufactured at the Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant in Tennessee, United States and at the Nissan Motor Kyushu plant in Kanda, Fukuoka, Japan. Between August 2014 and March 2020, it was also built at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, South Korea under contract.
First generation (S35; 2007)
The first-generation Rogue made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 7 January 2007. It replaces the Nissan X-Trail in Canada as Nissan's entry-level SUV and the body-on-frame Nissan Xterra in Mexico due to the Smyrna plant freeing capacity for the Suzuki Equator, although the Xterra continued on sale in the United States and Canada through 2015 after being withdrawn from the Mexican market after the 2008 model year.
The first-generation Rogue was available in three trim levels in the United States: S, SV and SL, available with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Common 2017 Nissan Rogue problems
The 2017 Nissan Rogue has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the brakes, forward collision avoidance system, and engine.
- Brake Problems: The NHTSA has received 92 complaints about the brakes of the 2017 Nissan Rogue, with issues such as sudden stops with no warning while driving or failure to stop, leading to crashes into the back of other vehicles. These problems are concerning because brakes are responsible for stopping the car when the driver wants them to, and unexpected brake behavior can lead to accidents.
- Forward Collision Avoidance System Issues: The forward collision avoidance system of the 2017 Nissan Rogue has received 4 complaints from the NHTSA. The system is designed to prevent collisions, but it has been reported to malfunction and slam on the brakes when there is no danger of a forward collision. This can lead to collisions from behind as other drivers struggle to react in time to unexpected stops.
- Engine Problems: Drivers have reported issues with the engine, including jerky performance and sluggish acceleration from a complete stop. These issues can make the vehicle unreliable and potentially dangerous, as they can lead to unexpectedly slow speeds. Other common engine problems include airbag sensors malfunctioning, electrical failures, seats not attached properly, poor exterior lighting, and seat belts not buckling correctly.
- Transmission Problems: The 2017 Nissan Rogue has been reported to have issues with its continuously variable transmission (CVT), including slow or stuttering acceleration and overheating.
- Airbag System Problems: The airbag system of the 2017 Nissan Rogue has also been reported to have issues, with a formal recall due to an error that made it possible for the airbag not to deploy in the event of a crash.
- Engine Stalls: The 2017 Nissan Rogue has been reported to have engine stalls, which can increase the risk of a crash.
These issues have led to three formal recalls of the 2017 Nissan Rogue, including damage to the engine harness that could cause a stall, insufficient welding of a seat frame, and a defect that could prevent the airbag from deploying in the event of a crash.
Does 2017 Nissan Rogue have transmission issues?
If you don't routinely and invariably change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your 2017 Nissan Rogue transmission will expeditiously slip.
Is Nissan Rogue 2017 a good car?
Vehicle overview
It gets high marks for seat comfort and cargo capacity, but the lethargic acceleration and poor visibility are sore points. The Rogue's pricing is enticing, but we recommend checking out the class-leading Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 as well.
What's a common problem on a Nissan Rogue?
The problematic transmission system is the likely culprit for the Rogue's most reported issue: acceleration loss. Reports claimed they experienced shaking, jerking, and stalling before the SUV accelerated. Faulty A/C: The Rogue's A/C system is prone to malfunction, causing it not to heat or cool the interior.
Is there a recall on 2017 Nissan Rogue?
(Nissan) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Rogue Hybrid vehicles. The hydraulic brake booster assembly may overheat internally, resulting in a loss of power brake assist. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-12
- VIN: JN8AT2MV0HW
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Three times in recent months vehicle has responded sluggish after coming to a stop. Two of those times were extended periods in stop amd go traffic greater than 20 minutes. 8/10/2024 event inexplicable as had stopped briefly and only driving for 5-10 minutes. Gas pedal must be fully depressed to get vehicle to move. When it finally responds it barely moves, RPMs Rev to 3,000 and stay there. In most recent episode 9/12/2024 I realized gas pedal was responding sluggishly after stopping for a light, but seemd to get in gear as normal. At 8 miles vehicle would barely resume rolling after a stop, gas pedal had to be floored, engine revved to 3,000 RPMs and acted like stuck in wrong gear, same as other 2 events. Like other times, no warning lights or gauges before or during event. After turning off vehicle and back on it returned to normal function, no indication there had been a problem. Not sure if this is a transmission problem or a computer problem, but a search of the internet reveals this is a common problem for Nissan Rogue owners. Many accounts read similar to mine. Not sure I can trust this vehicle anymore.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-15
- VIN: KNMAT2MVXHP
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I was informed by a Nissan dealership over 3 years ago that both inner tie rods on my 2017 Nissan Rogue have play in them. The vehicle had less then 30,000 miles on it and was never in an accident nor was it ever driven off roads. They told me it would cost over $2,000.00 to make the repair because the tie rods were part of the power steering rack. In other words to replace the inner tie rods they had to replace the power steering rack as well. The vehicle was manufactured in Korea. I complained that this failure in the tie rods had to be a manufacturing defect but Nissan refused to cover the repair because my three year new car warranty expired. I just recently read that the NHTSA in August 5th of 2024 began an investigation on this matter with the 2021 model year Nissan Rogue SUV. I believe this matter is just not for the 2021 model year but at least model year 2017.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-30
- VIN: JN8AT2MV2HW

The airbag warning light turned on, indicating a potential failure in the system. The vehicle and its components are available for inspection if needed. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The malfunctioning airbag system compromises the vehicle's ability to deploy airbags in the event of a collision, putting my safety and the safety of others at risk. If the airbags do not deploy correctly during an accident, it could lead to severe injuries or even fatalities. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the problem has been confirmed by a Nissan dealership. They informed me that the airbag system malfunctioned due to a defect in the sensor, and they recommended a repair costing approximately $4,000. However, they stated that the repair would not be covered under warranty. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? The vehicle has been inspected by a Nissan dealership, which confirmed the issue with the airbag system. The vehicle has not been inspected by police, insurance representatives, or other independent service centers. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes, the airbag warning light turned on, indicating a malfunction in the system. This warning light first appeared approximately a week ago.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
- VIN: KNMAT2MT1HP
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Radiator cooling fan defect that causes safety hazards and costly repairs. There's even an active class action claim filed against Nissan in Tennessee federal court Case No.[XXX]. My vehicle has been inspected by an independent service center who agreed and acknowledged the shop has experienced multiple customers who've had the same issue and repairs needed, with 2016-2020 Nissans especially. The dealership itself quoted $1800 for repairs! I'm a pretty proactive person, so caught the issue before my engine overheated and any warning lights turned on, but noticed when the radiator fan stopped turning once car was idled. Just want to make NHTSA aware of this ongoing issue and danger this can potentially be for Nissan consumers. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-21
- VIN: JN8AT2MT9HW
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The transmission on my 2017 Nissan Rogue is failing. I was driving from Queens, New York towards my home in New Jersey with my 10 year old nephew. There was a lot of stop and go traffic. Once I got into Manhattan, I noticed my car was having a hard time accelerating. The RPMs would go up to 4 but my car wouldn't go pass 40 miles on the speedometer. I pulled over to the side and turned off and turned on my car to try to reset it. It worked and I was able to continue driving. However, when I got to the Lincoln Tunnel entrance, the same issue was happening. Because it was stop and go traffic. I decided to again turn off and turn on my car. This time, when I tried turning it on, the car wouldn't turn on. I attempted it again and on the 3rd try, I was able to get it started, the check engine light came on, but the car drove fine until I got home. I took it to the dealership the next day, and they told me the transmission is failing and it would cost me $6200 to replace it. I asked if there was a recall on it, they said there was but my warranty expired. I thought the warranty was extended for another 10 years. Is this not the case? I'm confused by what I'm reading online. Is my dealership required to replace my transmission at no cost? This is a pretty dangerous situation as I don't feel safe driving my car anymore, it was especially scary since I had my nephew with me.

UPDATE: 5/21 Traded for a Honda when the 2019 Rogue developed electrical issues. UPDATE: 9/19 Traded for a 2019 Rogue SL AWD. I downsized from a Jeep Grand Cherokee to my 2017.5 Rogue SL. The Rogue is an impressive car, and I was hooked after test-driving several pre-owned vehicles of different makes and models. Despite my concerns about a 4 cyl engine, the car is zippy and I accelerate quickly and smoothly for freeway driving. I love the big sunroof, gas mileage, BOSE sound system, and the safety features. The interior is comfortable and pretty quiet, although the driver's door could use more soundproofing. The front seats could be a bit wider, but the convertible cargo area is handy on grocery day. The controls are all easily within reach and the car is easy to maneuver. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this car. It's just the right size for my needs, has all the bells and whistles I want, and is fun to drive!I am extremely satisfied with my Rogue SL! Although the factory tires and dealer-added window tint were not to my liking, I have since replaced them to better suit my preferences. The fuel economy is impressive, with my best combined gas mileage peaking at a stellar 38.3 mpg. I have experienced no issues with my vehicle and am confident in its reliability. Despite two recalls, my vehicle was not affected. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.
-
Overall, this is a great car. I love everything about it and can't complain. The only minor setback is the CVT, but I'm used to it because my other two Nissans had it, and most cars have it now. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a small crossover.

I recently purchased a USED CERTIFIED 2017 Rouge SV (31K) for my wife, after owning a reliable 2003 Nissan Frontier (135k) and a 2001 Toyota Camry (193k) with paint problems. Buying a new or used car from a dealer can be a stressful experience, taking up almost a full day of looking, test driving, negotiating, and financing. To make the process smoother, I suggest doing a lot of research online and making copies to avoid falling for the old bait and switch tactic. Despite reading negative reviews and watching YouTube videos about the Rogue's poor acceleration, CVT transmission problems, and AC issues, we found that the Rogue 2017 is the BEST driving experience we have had in a very long time. The acceleration is no problem, off the line and passing is great, and the CVT has a built-in side shifter to drop down a gear. We took a trip to Vegas in 109-degree heat, and the AC once it cooled the SUV was just fine. The SEATS of MEMORY FOAM are the best we have sat in for comfort. At 34 mph Highway 30 mph around town, what more do you want out of a 3400 lb CROSSOVER SUV? Some reviews call the Rouge an old person's SUV for long trips, but we find the comfortable driving to be a great feature. The Rogue is packed with HI TECH features, and the owner's manual is over an inch thick. We really appreciate the Blind Spot Notification Lights and Beep, as well as the Rear Camera and the Steering Wheel full of buttons, even though we haven't completely figured them out yet. The high safety rating, curtain airbags, anti-sway control, and computer-applied brakes that correct tipping are all great features that we love. We do have some concerns about the overall total cost and maintenance, but we understand that this is the way all vehicles are nowadays and it's only going to get worse in the future. The Rogue is classified as a compact SUV, but it seems larger than our old mid-size Camry, which is the only negative my wife has about it. However, we encourage you to check it out for yourself. The adjustable rear cargo shelves, fold-down adjustable rear seats, and rear passenger heating and cooling are all great features that we appreciate. We recommend checking out the NHTSA.gov website for safety and recalls, as well as Carcomplaints.com. We suggest test driving the Rogue, Honda, Toyota, and Subaru SUVs to help you make your decision. Best of luck to you, and remember that it only gets more expensive from this point. BTOG.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that we picked up our 2017 Nissan Rogue the other day and we're absolutely thrilled with our purchase! :)

A vehicle crossed over from the oncoming lane and hit the front wheel and front of my 2017 Nissan Rogue. The front and side airbags went off and the vehicle is to be totaled. However, I walked away stiff and sore but otherwise in good shape. I am grateful to Nissan for keeping me safe.

I was considering purchasing one of these cars before renting one. However, I found that the interior lacked shoulder and seat space, and the cup holders were in an awkward spot that required me to bend my arm in an uncomfortable way to reach my drink. Additionally, I think it needs more USB ports. The drive train is quite loud and sounds like it should be racing around, but in reality, it barely moves. The car is also extremely underpowered, and the wind bounces you around more than you would expect in a vehicle like this. Furthermore, the car feels like it could go out of control very quickly. While the steering wheel is great if you have long fingers, I personally struggle to grasp the size and slickness of the wheel.

Okay, so here's the absolute truth. I've been renting cars by the month for the past year and have driven many different models. I absolutely loved the Nissan Altima, but since I prefer an SUV, I assumed the Rogue would offer the same level of comfort as the Altima but in an SUV. However, I recently got the Rogue SV model and I have to say, the difference is night and day, and not in a good way. The Altima I had was the SL model with leather trim and those zero gravity seats, which were amazing. The Rogue, on the other hand, has cloth seats that are not very comfortable. I don't mind cloth seats, but these seats are weird and I can't seem to get the driver's seat adjusted properly. They're small and not supportive at all, and the worst part is that I can't reach the top of the steering wheel. If I move the seat forward, my right knee hits the dash, making for a very uncomfortable drive. I have to drive 10 hours in this thing, so I just want to warn those considering this vehicle to go sit in it and test drive it. Comfort is relative to each individual, and I had very high hopes for the Rogue. Maybe the SL model would fix the issues I'm having, but unfortunately, I can't request that in a rental pool.

I purchased a Nissan-Rogue family package vehicle from Cherry Hill Nissan three months ago with the intention of having good gas mileage and an additional seat for my family's occasional needs. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing lower gas mileage than what was advertised, with only 19 MPG in city driving and 24-26 MPG on highway driving. Despite multiple visits to the dealer and fulfilling their requirements, no satisfactory results were achieved. The dealer did a software upgrade, but it did not make any significant difference. After contacting Nissan customer care, a case was opened, but it was also unsatisfactory. The Nissan representative stated that everything was working as expected based on dealer checks, and it was within company specifications. However, this was unacceptable, and no help was provided by Nissan. It seems that Nissan is very proud of their legal team, and a mere customer cannot do anything against them. Therefore, I would not recommend purchasing a Nissan vehicle or going to Cherry Hill Nissan dealership.

The center display, which shows your speed and odometer reading, stopped working just three days after we purchased the SUV. Unfortunately, we were unable to retrieve any data from the display cluster, which has been on backorder for over a week. We still don't have a date for when we will receive the new part. We haven't even been able to use a full tank of gas because the dealer has had the SUV longer for repairs than we've had it to drive. It's now been six weeks and we still don't have a date for when the replacement display cluster will arrive. We were told that Nissan is making a new display cluster, which will take another five days to load with our ROGUES, VIN #, and mileage (only 85 miles). After that, it will need to be installed by the dealer. We're hoping that the replacement display cluster will arrive soon, especially since the state LEMON car LAW (30 days) will start next week. We've tried contacting the person assigned to our problem at Nissan, but they seem to be too busy to call us back. We're at our wits' end and just want this issue resolved.

The vehicle is excellent, providing both comfort and decent gas mileage. It features normal, eco, and sport modes, which offer a range of driving experiences. Although the transmission went out at 30,000 miles while on vacation, it was replaced under warranty. However, Nissan did not cover the cost of the hotel or rental car for the extended stay. Despite this, I was able to receive a 30.00 dollar amazon card and an extended warranty to 84,000 through a class action lawsuit. The servicing dealership recommended servicing the new transmission sooner than required.
