2012 Nissan Rogue problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan. It made its debut in October 2007 for the 2008 model year. Beginning in 2013 for the 2014 model year, the model has been merged with the X-Trail sold outside the North American market, making them identical. It is currently Nissan's best-selling vehicle in the United States.

As of 2023, the Rogue was manufactured at the Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant in Tennessee, United States and at the Nissan Motor Kyushu plant in Kanda, Fukuoka, Japan. Between August 2014 and March 2020, it was also built at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, South Korea under contract.

First generation (S35; 2007)

The first-generation Rogue made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 7 January 2007. It replaces the Nissan X-Trail in Canada as Nissan's entry-level SUV and the body-on-frame Nissan Xterra in Mexico due to the Smyrna plant freeing capacity for the Suzuki Equator, although the Xterra continued on sale in the United States and Canada through 2015 after being withdrawn from the Mexican market after the 2008 model year.

The first-generation Rogue was available in three trim levels in the United States: S, SV and SL, available with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Common 2012 Nissan Rogue problems

The 2012 Nissan Rogue has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the transmission and the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System).

  • Transmission Failure:
The most common problem reported with the 2012 Nissan Rogue is transmission failure, particularly around the 100,000-mile mark. The transmission issues are often related to Nissan's continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is prone to problems. Many reported transmission problems have resulted in complete transmission failure, with a typical repair cost of nearly $4,000.
  • TPMS Malfunction:
Another common issue with the 2012 Nissan Rogue is the malfunctioning TPMS system. This can lead to inaccurate tire pressure readings, which can negatively impact fuel efficiency and handling. While not as costly as transmission issues, TPMS repairs can still be expensive, with replacement sensors costing around $200 each.
  • A/C Compressor Failure:
The air conditioning system in the 2012 Nissan Rogue has also been reported to have problems. Specifically, the A/C compressor can fail, leading to costly repairs. The typical repair cost for a failed A/C compressor is over $1,200.
  • Faulty Airbag Sensors:
Some 2012 Nissan Rogue owners have reported issues with the airbag sensors, which can be faulty and costly to replace. Complaints show some Nissan dealerships quoting the airbag repair at around $2,000, despite no investigation being launched for airbag problems.
  • Suspension Strut-Bearing Assembly Noise:
A common issue with the 2012 Nissan Rogue is noise from the suspension's strut-bearing assembly. Many customers have reportedly had one or more parts of the assembly replaced at dealerships, with Nissan quoting between $520 to $1,200 depending on which part of the strut assembly needs to be replaced or repaired.

In summary, the 2012 Nissan Rogue has several common problems, primarily related to the transmission and TPMS system. These issues can be expensive to repair, with transmission failure being the most costly problem. It is essential for owners to maintain their vehicles properly and address any issues promptly to minimize repair costs and extend the life of their vehicle.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT4CW
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The main and most dangerous issue is first hearing high pitch whining/winding sound while driving as the rpm's start to spike and stay high resulting & causing vehicle to lose power and speed for no apparent reason. Subsequently, as you attempt to depress the gas pedal to increase speed to try to mitigate the issue, the vehicle continues to lose power and speed regardless of how depressed gas pedal is (even completely depressed to floorboard). Within seconds vehicle is forced to a stop from lack of power and acceleration and will not continue to drive at all. This issue is nothing less than terrifying and incredibly dangerous especially while on the freeway with heavy traffic speeding and whizzing past you at 70+ mph. If this is happening to people at night, it's only a matter of time before someone will be killed by the speeding and oblivious traffic coming from behind if that has not already occurred. I was travelling with my child and our dog in the back and wonder would have happened if I couldn't have merged into the slower lanes in heavy traffic and off to the shoulder to "safety." What will happen to a family in the fast lane that is not able to merge to safety or when they find themselves forced and stuck in the middle of the freeway between the median and the fast lane?? In addition, upon starting, vehicle will also idle higher than normal and stay high with slight fluxuation even while in park. While driving, rpm's continue to spike with every gear shift and vehicle is slow to respond and keep up with desired speed and will continue to worsen as time progresses. The longer the drive, the more (tired) and sluggish it seems with both lack of response, lack of power, and lack of speed. First signs of issue were while idling at stoplights, vehicle will shake and seem to idle very low as if going to die while at idle. There is also a noticeable shake while driving especially at higher speeds with this problem remaining and lasting the duration of drive.

POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-28
  • VIN: JN8AS5MV4CW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: We bought a 2012 Nissan Rogue with 88,000 miles for our daughter last year. Out of nowhere the car/transmission would not accelerate in rush hour, on the highway. The engine light came on but the message was vague as to what the issue was. I don't need to restate the obvious, as far as safety concerns. Thankfully she made it to the shoulder and we had to have the car towed. This could have had catastrophic consequences for her. I have read numerous posts about how this is an inherent problem with the Nissan transmissions without a recall. We are in the process of determining which repair facility to use but the cost, at a minimum, will be $4,200.00.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-12
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT0CW
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The CVT component on these cars causes it to lose power and acceleration which can cause an bad accident..one morning while going to work i got onto the expressway and car did not want to acceleration and almost caused me to get into a collision with an 18 wheeler.. The next day i took it to an mechanic shop whereas they told me nothing was wrong with my car and i should contact nissan and complain because the only problem they can guess is its my CVT and nissan made the car to do that so it last longer.. Then 2 days later I was driving on a commercial road with lots of traffic when all of a sudden my car would not acceleration even when I pushed the pedal to the floor.. I pulled over and turned the car off for awhile and then Crunk it back up and it was accelerating better.. so over the course of 5 months I have been having this problem with my car when I come to a stop or when I decelerate and then accelerate.. I did some research to find out what could be the problem and I came across a thread of other consumers that were having the same exact problem with the nissan brand of cars and suv's.. even though they know this problem exists with their make and models they provide no solution other than spend more money on a car they designed with a defective transmission and/or other components.. this is a serious safety concern for anyone driving these cars or suvs from nissan..

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
  • VIN: JN8AS5MV6CW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: One year ago I had the transmission and computer replaced on my 2012 Nissan Rogue SL, after losing driving power SEVERAL times WHILE DRIVING. To both my and my mechanics amazement, this did not solve the issue! My mechanic traced it back to the engine wiring harness. Nissan claimed to not have any of the required wiring harnesses in stock, and for the life of us we could not find a replacement online. After some research, we came across NHTSA Recall Number15V-032. We were again amazed to learn that my car was not included in the recall, but other 2012 Rogues were. My mechanic went wire through wire, and after 6 months of issues and over $6,000 in parts and labor, I was back on the road. Fast forward to today, I am now dealing with the same issue AGAIN, except this time I was traveling on the PA Turnpike with 3 other passengers when my check engine light turned on and the car lost all power. This car is not only a money pit but a MASSIVE safety issue. I wish I had done more research into the disaster that is Nissan & their early model CVT Transmissions. The NHTSA needs to step in and expand these recalls and class action lawsuits to ALL year models, not just a few.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-13
  • VIN: JN8AS5MT3CW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 17yr old son and 20 yr old daughter were traveling to visit grandparents. They were driving normal highway speed and the transmission just cut out and the RPMs reved up to the red line and they barely made it off the road before a collision. This vehicle only has 70k miles and contains one of the faulty transmissions that they are aware of. This model was not included in their recall and is dangerous. This should be considered deception of the consumer, since they knew they built a faulty product and all of these vehicles should be recalled. Nissan should reimburse all consumers for such a poor/faulty/dangerous product.

Negative 2012 Nissan Rogue car reviews

  1. Dusty Mayer 2024-11-28

After reading lots of reviews, we decided to purchase a fully loaded Nissan Rogue. Although it seemed nice during our initial test drive, we have since driven the SUV for 12,000 km and have noticed some issues. The paint appears to be of lower quality and the flap cover over the spare wheel in the trunk makes a lot of annoying noise, similar to the sound of empty utensils. When we brought this to the attention of the dealer, they explained that this is a common issue due to the rubber knobs shrinking in cold temperatures. However, we believe that the flap cover is actually loose and not tied down by screws, which is a quality issue that Nissan should address. Despite these issues, we still believe that the Nissan Rogue is a good SUV, but we do regret not considering other options such as the VW Tiguan or Rav4 before making our purchase.

  2. Jermain Gerlach 2024-10-28

I recently upgraded from a 2010 Ford Escape xlt, fwd, 4 cyl, to a 2012 Rogue SV. I must say, the Rogue's quality of materials feels much better than the Escape. It drives more like a car and is much quieter. In the past week, I've put it through nearly 3000 kms as I'm on the road a lot. I particularly like the CVT when at highway speed and having to pass, it's very smooth. Although it is a bit unusual when getting up to speed from the on-ramp, I think it's pretty easy to get used to. Overall, the Rogue feels planted and tracks well.

  3. Mohammad Wisoky 2024-09-24

I drove my Rogue for two years until I just couldn't take it another day. Unfortunately, I found the 'drone' to be quite annoying, and it was difficult to hear the radio when accelerating or driving up hills. Additionally, I wasn't a fan of the 'premium' package features. The visibility was tough due to some large blind spots, which made highway driving and backing up a bit challenging. The Bluetooth also lagged quite a bit, which made it difficult to have conversations without talking over the other person. The GPS setup was also a bit frustrating, as it didn't recognize some streets that have been around for quite some time, and it didn't provide street names in 2012. Lastly, I found the interior cabin to be a bit cramped, which made road trips uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the clear coat didn't hold up well against bird droppings.

  4. Giuseppe Weimann 2024-09-13

I purchased a Nissan Rogue recently and noticed a strange vibration coming from the vehicle after driving it for a couple of days. Despite bringing it back to Garden City several times and receiving different explanations each time, I was finally told on my last visit that the cause was the CVT transmission and that this was normal. However, I strongly believe that an automobile should run smoothly and this vibration makes for a terrible driving experience. Therefore, I recommend that anyone interested in buying the Nissan Rogue should consider other options.

  5. Gerardo Parisian 2024-09-03

I recently purchased a used 2012 Rogue with around 28,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, at 32,000 miles, the transmission started acting up on my way to work. When I took it in for service, I had a less than pleasant experience with the staff who were not very helpful and only made excuses. I even contacted Nissan Customer Service, but was informed that the dealership is not corporately owned and they could not do anything to help. It was disappointing that they were not interested in fixing the car. At 40,000 miles, the same issue occurred again and the service manager informed me that it was not worth fixing if it only happens every couple of months.

Positive 2012 Nissan Rogue car reviews

  1. Carlos Cremin 2024-11-04

We've had this car for 3 years and 45,000 miles and it's been great! We're getting around 30 mpg, which is better than we expected. It handles pretty well and we haven't had to spend any money on maintenance except for oil changes and tires. Plus, there's lots of leg room in the back seat!

  2. Tatum Kerluke 2024-11-02

We have absolutely no complaints about the car. The Rogue blew away the competition, including the Subaru, Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav 4, Ford Escape, and Hyundai Santa Fe. It has a very good ride, quiet cabin, comfortable seats, and lots of room. We opted for the premium package, which includes a back-up camera, GPS, auto headlights, roof rails, keyless entry and start, and power seats, all for about $1400.00. Even my wife, who is 65, says it's the best car she's ever owned. Although I love my CX-9, I prefer to drive the Rogue because of its great pickup and quiet ride. Additionally, there are great rebates available (2K).

  3. Graham Emmerich 2024-10-26

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with you. I've been a pickup owner for over 20 years, but recently I decided to switch to an SUV for a more car-like ride. I did a lot of research online and went out to test drive a bunch of different options. After trying out the Mitsubshi Outlander Sport, Ford Escape, Forester, and many others, I found that the Rogue was my top choice. And I have to say, I haven't been disappointed with my decision!

    Very reliable

It's an SUV that drives like a sedan.
