2013 Volkswagen Touareg problems
The Volkswagen Touareg (German pronunciation: ) is a car produced by German automaker Volkswagen Group since 2002 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant. Considered to be the first luxury mid-size SUV from Volkswagen, the vehicle was named after the nomadic Tuareg people, inhabitants of the Saharan interior in North Africa. Originally, the Touareg was developed together with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, and as of October 2020, the Touareg was developed together with the Audi Q8, the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus. This family of vehicles are all unibody SUVs with independent suspension. The first generation (2002–2010) offered five, six, eight, ten and twelve-cylinder engine choices.
Development
The Volkswagen Touareg (internally designated Typ 7L) was developed as a joint venture project by Porsche and the Volkswagen Group, involving the Audi and Volkswagen brands. During the initial development phase of the Typ 7L and the early years of its production, Porsche operated as an independent entity, not affiliated with the Volkswagen Group. The sports car market is known for its fluctuations. In response to these market conditions, Porsche's CEO at the time, Wendelin Wiedeking, sought to diversify the company's product range. This strategy included the introduction of Porsche's first four-door vehicle. A team in Weissach, Germany, of over 300, led by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert, developed the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Now it is shared between the Touareg, the Audi Q7, and the Porsche Cayenne. However, there are styling, equipment, performance, and technical differences between them. The Touareg and Cayenne both seat five, while the Q7's stretched wheelbase accommodates a third row for seven passengers.
The Volkswagen Touareg is built at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Audi Q7. The Cayenne is assembled by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany, at a facility built for Cayenne production.
Due to the demand and the exchange rates of euros against the US dollar, as well as different pricing and environmental policies in the US, the V6 and V8 engine variants make up most of Volkswagen's American Touareg offering. Compared to other Volkswagen-branded vehicles sold in the US, which are aimed at the mass market, Touaregs came in more upscale trims and competed with other luxury crossover SUVs.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-25
- VIN: WVGEF9BP1DD
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: So there’s a campaign to add a bracket to one of the catalytic converters. That’s great except I never knew about it and the thing they added the bracket to prevent happened to me. The exhaust pipe from the catalytic separated from the flange connecting to the manifold. It’s a 2000 dollar part from the dealer. Luckily I found a mechanic who is welding the flange and fixing what I got. Just another example of a car company knowing there’s an issue but not really attempting to fix it, only in a policy no one reads.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-10
- VIN: WVGEF9BP3DD
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The sunroof glass of the car spontaneously exploded while driving on the interstate. No rock or object ever hit the glass, and it exploded, sending glass and debris all over myself and my passenger while driving 70mph. The noise was deafening and caused me to swerve as I was so shocked. I easily could have gone in the ditch or hit another car. To make matters worse I was 50 miles from home on a Friday evening so there was no way to get help. I have seen this issue on other Touareg’s but Volkswagen has denied accountability and refuses to cover it. The issue was repaired at a VW dealer and was $2143 to repair. The issue was inspected by my Progressive Insurance rep. This issue came out of nowhere and there were no warning signs.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-03
- VIN: WVGEP9BP9DD
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: ON JUNE 3, 2019 I WAS TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON THE I-5 NEAR TULARE, CALIFORNIA, AT APPROXIMATELY 75MPH WHEN AN INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON THAT I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE. LESS THAN A MINUTE LATER, I BEGAN TO LOSE POWER AND WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE. I QUICKLY MOVED TO THE RIGHT LANE AND PREPARED TO EXIT THE FREEWAY LESS THAN A MILE AHEAD. A FEW SECONDS LATER, THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. I WAS FORCED TO COAST OFF THE FREEWAY, NO POWER, NO POWER STEERING AND QUICKLY LOSING MY BRAKES. I WAS LUCKY THAT THERE WAS AN OPEN PARKING LOT IMMEDIATELY OFF THE FREEWAY THAT I WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO. AFTER SAFELY COMING TO A STOP, I ATTEMPTED TO LOOK UP THE INDICATOR LIGHT ICON IN THE VEHICLE MANUAL. UNABLE TO FIND THE CODE / REASON FOR THE ENGINE FAILURE, I CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK. THE NEAREST VW DEALERSHIP WAS 45 MILES AWAY SO I OPTED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A LOCAL EUROPEAN CAR SERVICE SHOP IN TULARE, FRANK'S AUTOMOTIVE. AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, THEY HAD A VW MASTER TRAINED TECHNICIAN ON STAFF. HE RAN THE CODES, CHECKED THE ENGINE AND DETERMINED THAT MY HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED. HE SAID THE PUMP LITERALLY DISINTEGRATED AND SENT BITS OF ALUMINUM 'SHRAPNEL' THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. HE INDICATED THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THAT THERE WAS PARTIAL RECALL AS A RESULT. UNFORTUNATELY, MY PARTICULAR MODEL WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND VW DECLINED TO ASSIST. THE REPAIR ENDED UP COSTING ME MORE THAN $8,000. IF VW HAD GIVEN ME A WARNING ABOUT THIS ISSUE, I WOULD MOST CERTAINLY HAVE HAD THE PUMP REPLACED BEFORE IT CATASTROPHICALLY FAILED. VW NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THESE FAILURES. WHEN THE PUMP FAILS, IT'S CATASTROPHIC!

- Summary: 2013 TOUAREG 3.0L TDI-INTERMITTENT JERKING MOTION OF VEHICLE WHEN IN MOTION, INITIALLY AT LOWER SPEED AND NOW AT 80MPH ON HIGHWAY, INTENSE JERKING OF VEHICLE CAUSING VEHICLE TO LOSE POWER AND NEAR COLLISION WITH VEHICLE BEHIND ME. IT HAS BECOME MORE FREQUENT, ALMOST DAILY OCCURRENCE NOW. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN IMMEDIATELY TO VW DEALERSHIP. PAPERWORK STATES "ROAD TEST VERIFIED CONCERN" (OF JERKY MOTION AND NOT RUNNING RIGHT). "SCANNED FOR FAULTS. NO FAULTS STORED. NO TSBS, OR TECH TIPS REGARDING CONCERN. SEEMS TO BE A SOFTWARE ISSUE WITH NO REMEDY AT THIS TIME". THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED ME THAT THIS IS A SOFTWARE BUG IN THE EMISSIONS SOFTWARE FIX AND THAT VW HAS NOT SUBMITTED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB) TO OPEN AN INVESTIGATION FOR FIX. THEY SAID THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THERE IS ANOTHER CUSTOMER WITH EXACT ISSUE AS MINE. I AM TOLD THAT VW IS NOT COMMUNICATING ANY INFORMATION ON THIS ISSUE BUT IT IS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THIS IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE BROUGHT ON BY THE EMISSIONS FIX. THE VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVEABLE WITH THIS ISSUE! THE JERKING MOTION IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO BE DRIVEN AT ANY SPEED, EXTREMELY UNSAFE ON THE HIGHWAY FROM MY LAST EXPERIENCE WITH NEAR COLLISION WHEN UNPREDICTABLE, SUDDEN, INTENSE JERKING MOTION OCCURRED. SYMPTOM: VEHICLE LOSES POWER BRIEFLY, LIKE IT'S CHOKING, THEN REGAINS CAUSING A FORWARD THRUST FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER POWER LOSS...CAUSING THE JERKING MOTION. DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THERE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH COMPLAINTS FILED ACCORDING TO VW CORPORATE TO INITIATE A TSB. THIS VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVEABLE, NOT SAFE. EVEN ONE COMPLAINT SHOULD INITIATE CAUSE FOR CONCERN TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE OR BUY BACK THE VEHICLE IF THIS IS CAUSED BY THE EMISSIONS SOFTWARE FIX. VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN SERVICED BY A VW DEALERSHIP ON RECOMMENDED SCHEDULED SERVICE INTERVALS.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-09-16
- VIN: WVGEP9BP2DD
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I HAVE JUST OVER 50,000 MILES ON MY TOUAREG TDI AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THE ADBLUE HEATER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE 80K EMISSIONS WARRANTY AND WILL COST ME $1,200 TO REPAIR. HOW CAN THIS NOT BE COVERED WHEN ADBLUE'S SOLE PURPOSE IS TO REMOVE NO2 FOR EMISSIONS? NOW I AM FACED WITH AN EXCESSIVE REPAIR FOR A VEHICLE THAT DOESN'T EVEN MEET EMISSIONS ANYWAY! OWNERS OF TDI 3.0 LITERS, SUCH AS MYSELF, STILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE FATE OF OUR VEHICLES WILL BE SINCE THE VW DIESEL SCANDAL BROKE OVER A YEAR AGO. NO IDEA IF THERE WILL BE A FIX OR A BUYBACK. I AM STUCK WITH A CAR THAT IS NOT ONLY LEAKING HARMFUL NO2 INTO THE AIR, BUT HAS SIGNIFICANTLY DIMINISHED IN VALUE. AND NOW I NEED TO INVEST ANOTHER $1,200?!??! I CALLED VW AND THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO OFFER ANY FINANCIAL COMPENSATION FOR THIS REPAIR, NOR IS THE DEALERSHIP WILLING TO PROVIDE A GOODWILL REPAIR. AND I'M TOLD IF I DON'T REPAIR IT, AFTER A CERTAIN NUMBER OF MILES THE CAR WON'T START. SO, I'M HAVING TO INVEST IN A PART FOR THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM AND IT STILL WON'T BE EPA-COMPLIANT. THAT JUST DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT. *TR

- VIN: WVGEP9BP9DD
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE TRAVELING AT NIGHT ON A 4 LANE HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE WENT INTO LIMP MODE WITHOUT WARNING OR ANY SYMPTOMS OF A POWER PROBLEM. WE HAD TO MOVE ACROSS FOUR LANES OF CAR AND TRUCK TRAFFIC WHILE RAPIDLY DECELERATING. LUCK AND SKILL PREVAILED TO AVOID A SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY FATAL ACCIDENT. NO WARNING INDICATORS WERE DISPLAYED. SAFELY IN THE BREAKDOWN LANE THE VEHICLE CONTINUED AN APPROXIMATELY 1300 RPM IDLE AND WOULD MOVE AT ABOUT 15- 20MPH. I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND THE ACCLERATOR PEDAL CONTINUED TO BE UNRESPONSIVE. I PLACED THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL WITH NO CHANGE IN THE ABILITY TO INCREASE RPM WITH THE ACCELERATOR. I SHIFTED BACK TO DRIVE AND NORMAL ACCELERATION FUNCTION RETURNED. WE DROVE ANOTHER 35-40 MINUTES WITHOUT FURTHER PROBLEMS. THE NEXT MORNING THE VEHICLE DROVE NORMALLY AND I TOOK IT TO THE VW DEALER. THEIR DIAGNOSTIC REVIEW SHOWED NO ISSUES AND NO MALFUNCTIONS WERE DETECTED.

Heavy solid SUV. Safety rating highest in class. They're German. What else can you say? After the recall, I get 3 mpg more. It gets 31 on the highway with all seats taken. They're quiet, powerful, and the diesel will last 200k. Did I mention how powerful it is? Wow!
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to touch base with you about the diesel issue that VW is currently facing. Do you happen to know when they might be able to sort it out? Thanks so much!
-
This car is a wonder to drive. It has tons of pickup for its size and a luxurious feel. The brown leather is top notch. Although the sound system requires some updating, I have been able to save money with the 25+mpg driving compared to my cross tour. I am always happy when I drive it.
-
I'm glad to hear that you love it!

I purchased this car in February 2023 with 89k miles on it. As of September, we have driven it up to 98,700 miles and I must say, I absolutely adore this SUV. I always use ethanol-free gasoline and the VR6 engine sounds amazing with it. We get 18-20 mpg in town and 25-27 mpg on the freeway. The power is impressive and it accelerates quickly. The car is free of rattles, has great steering, and handles beautifully. I love downshifting a gear or two to let the engine braking slow it down and then hitting the throttle while upshifting. I can feel the rear end squat down as it powers out of the turn. Recently, I installed new Toyo Celsius CUV tires and the performance has been outstanding. They are much quieter than the previous tires and are all-weather, 3-peak mountain snowflake tires with a 60k mile warranty. My wife and I use this car for everything. The seats are incredibly comfortable, even for long drives. I am tall with long legs and still have legroom behind me for another 6-footer even with the front seat positioned where I like it. The cargo space is fantastic and the Bluetooth allows for basic controls when streaming music through my iPhone on the OEM head unit. We even got to experience winter driving when our local area was hit with a lot of snow. I didn't have to do anything special, just drove it as I normally would in the snow and the Touareg powered through with no slipping or wheel spin, just pure traction. I absolutely love this vehicle and my wife and I bought it because we both love VWs and it has the capability to tow our 1955 Thunderbird to shows. It can tow up to 7,700 pounds and still easily fits in our garage. I have no regrets, just love. Update - March 5, 2024: We have driven over 103k miles now and this SUV continues to run great. I always fill it with ethanol-free gas, which is a bit more expensive than premium, but my mechanic says it's the best for engines using direct injection.Ethanol can leave deposits around the injectors that decrease performance over time, requiring expensive cleanings. However, with ethanol-free gas, I have been averaging 20.3 mpg combined for the 14,057 miles I've driven. My best mpg was 28.7 at 72 mph. Living in northern Utah, I have to traverse a mountain pass just to go to Salt Lake or Ogden, so the 28.7 mpg was earned - no long stretch on perfectly flat highway. The seats continue to provide all-day comfort, making me feel like a king on his throne when driving this SUV. As for maintenance, I have done two oil changes since I've had the Touareg. The first one was at the dealer right after I bought it, mostly for my own peace of mind. The dealer charged me a lot for this service, but the second oil change, which also included a tire rotation and a check/top-off of fluids, only cost me $61 at my local mechanic. Last summer, we noticed coolant on the floor of the garage, but it was fixed for under $200. So much for maintenance and repairs being expensive! I still plan on keeping this vehicle for a long time. It is just so nice to drive - good power, good torque, and decent mpg. One year later and I still do not regret this purchase.
Dominic Carter 2024-10-10
The car is well engineered and runs great, but unfortunately politics are having a negative impact on it.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with Volkswagen's factory sunroofs. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with leaks in earlier production cars, and it seems that the problem still persists with the touareg. I've taken my car to the dealer to get it repaired, but they claimed it was fixed when it wasn't. I'm headed back to the dealer again, but I can't help but think it would be better if Volkswagen just corrected the issue. While it's a nice car, I don't think it's worth the problems. If you're in the market for a car in its class, I would certainly recommend looking at other options unless you want to spend a lot of time at the service department during the first year of ownership.
