The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 1996 Dodge Neon problems

The Dodge Neon is a front-wheel drive compact sedan that was produced from 1995 to 2005. While the Neon has been praised for its price, power, and appearance, its design has aged since its release. The Neon has mixed reliability reviews, with some owners giving it a five-star rating on everyauto.com.

One of the most common problems reported by Dodge Neon owners is a malfunctioning cooling fan. The cooling fan is responsible for cooling the engine, and if it fails, it can cause the engine to overheat. This problem is particularly common in the 1996 Neon, with 9 complaints of the car stalling while driving and being hard to restart. The cooling fan is an essential component of the Neon's engine, and if it fails, it can cause significant damage to the engine.

Another common problem reported by Dodge Neon owners is oil entering the spark plug tubes. This problem can cause the engine to misfire and result in poor fuel economy. The spark plug tubes are responsible for delivering the spark to the spark plugs, and if oil enters these tubes, it can cause the spark plugs to become fouled. This problem is particularly common in the 1995 Neon, with 6 complaints of blown head gaskets.

A musty smell from the HVAC system is another common problem reported by Dodge Neon owners. This problem is caused by mold or mildew growing in the evaporator case or heater core. The HVAC system is responsible for heating and cooling the car, and if it smells musty, it can be unpleasant for the driver and passengers. This problem is particularly common in the 1995 Neon, with 5 complaints of the service engine light being constantly on.

The Dodge Neon's engine is another problem area for the car. According to carcomplaints.com, the worst model year for the Neon is 2002, with the worst category being engine problems.

The Dodge Neon's spark plug tube seals can also fail, causing misfires and poor fuel economy. This problem is caused by a failure in the spark plug tube seals, which can allow oil to enter the spark plug tubes. This problem is particularly common in the 1995 Neon, with 6 complaints of blown head gaskets.

In summary, the Dodge Neon has several common problems that can affect its reliability. These problems include a malfunctioning cooling fan, oil entering the spark plug tubes, a musty smell from the HVAC system, engine problems, and failure in the spark plug tube seals. While the Neon has been praised for its price, power, and appearance, its design has aged since its release. Owners of the Neon should be aware of these common problems and take steps to address them as soon as possible to ensure the longevity of the car.

  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH MY 1996 DODGE NEON SPORT, IT HAS BEEN INOPERABLE FOR THE LAST YEAR OR SO, DUE TO ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND STALLING WHICH I BELIEVE STEM FROM THE WIRING HARNESS. I HAVE HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED A FEW TIMES, THE A/C REPLACED, FUEL INJECTION ACTS UP AND THE FUEL GAUGE FLUCTUATES, MY TRANSMISSION HAS STARTED SLIPPING, POWER STEERING AND EXHAUST ARE LEAKING, NUMEROUS OIL LEAKS, REAR LIGHTS/ BRAKE LIGHTS HAVE NOT WORKED IN OVER A YEAR, DRIVERSIDE WINDOW BROKE ALONG THE EXTENDING ARM INSIDE OF THE DOOR FRAME, TRUNK RELEASE IS BROKEN AND MY CRUISE CONTROL IS BROKEN! FOR THE LAST 4MONTHS MY CAR HAS BEEN SITTING AT ATLANTA DODGE LLC! JUST AFTER LEAVING IT WITH THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT, I RECEIVED A CALL SAYING I NEEDED A NEW BATTERY AND UNTIL IT WAS REPLACED FOR $180 THEY COULD NOT DO A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK FOR ANY OTHER PROBLEMS!! THE BATTERY WAS NOT EVEN A YEAR OLD AND WORKED FINE WHEN I LEFT THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP!! BUT IN HOPES OF ANY DECENT SERVICE I BOUGHT ANOTHER BATTERY FROM ADVANCED AUTO PARTS $40 AND TOOK IT IN MYSELF. DURING THIS VISIT I REMINDED THEM THAT MY MAKE AND MODEL CAR WAS UNDER A RECALL, THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS NOT!! I GAVE THEM THE NHTSA RECALL DOCUMENTATION AND WAS TOLD THAT IT DIDN'T APPLY TO MY CAR, ONLY TO THE NEONS FROM THE PLANT IN NEW MEXICO!! JUST AFTER THANKSGIVING I DECIDED TO CALL THEM TO FIND OUT WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON. I SPOKE WITH BRIAN THE CS REP. AND HE INFORMED ME THAT THE MECHANICS COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR AND REFUSED TO RESEARCH ANY FURTHER UNLESS I AGREED TO SPEND NO LESS THAN $250 TOWARDS THE REPAIRS!! IT'S NOT A COINCIDENCE THAT THE SAME PARTS ARE IN NEED OF REPAIRS AS 15,000 OTHER NEONS -- REGARDLESS OF WHICH PLANT THE VEHICLES WERE ASSEMBLIED, THE DEFECTS LIE IN THE PLACEMENT AND/OR MANUFACTURING OF THE FAULTY PARTS AND SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER ANY RELATING RECALLS! *NM UPDATED 12/1505. *JB

THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING WITH MY 1996 DODGE NEON HAS ALSO BEEN IDENTIFIED WITHIN THIS SAME YEAR AND MODEL CAR AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED, HOWEVER MY CAR DID NOT COME FROM THE SAME PLANT AS THE RECALLED NEONS. THIS DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT THE SAME PROBLEM HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN THE SAME PRODUCT!! THE DODGE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY WOULD NOT HONOR THE RECALL FOR MY NEON. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO ABOUT THIS? *NM

I bought this car used in 2000 and sold it in '03, which turned out to be the best decision I ever made! I purchased it to replace my aging '89 Corsica, which I loved until it started having major breakdowns. Unfortunately, this car wasn't much better and had tons of problems. It spent more time in the shop than on the road due to issues such as the oxygen sensor, battery, and alternator, just to name a few. I also had a few accidents with other vehicles and hit two different deer, which made me wonder if the red color was a magnet for attracting trouble. Despite all of this, one good thing about the car was that it got great mileage of 28/39 just going to and from work. Looks can be deceiving, but I learned a lot from this experience!

I see that you've already read this page before, but still decided to buy the car. Unfortunately, it seems like you've had some trouble with it so far. The head gasket had to be replaced once, the air conditioning needed to be recharged and will need to be replaced this summer, and now you've found out about a brake recall on these cars. It sounds like quite a hassle and has cost you a fair amount of money for a car that is just okay.

I have experienced several issues mentioned by others, including a significant oil leak that required three trips and cost $900 to repair. Additionally, the car experiences constant shaking and vibration. It is regrettable that I fell for the hype surrounding this car in 1996. Overall, it has been a disappointing vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. It's been a great car for a long time and it's still pretty reliable. However, I've had some issues with the paint and the durability of the accessories. Unfortunately, the door panels keep falling off and breaking, and the windows haven't worked right for a while. The antenna also fell off and the gas tank door broke one day. Additionally, it's not the best car to drive in the snow. Despite these issues, I still find it to be a reliable vehicle that gets 25-32 mpg. Thanks for listening!

I used to own this vehicle and then traded it in for a Honda product. While I had a lot of issues with my Neon, I found that my Honda has been much more reliable. Unless there are significant improvements, I suggest avoiding the Neon altogether to avoid any consumer headaches.

Hello! I'm thrilled to hear that you're still enjoying your 1996 Dodge Neon Highline Coupe after 5 years and 70,000 miles. It's great to hear that you've taken care of any issues that have come up, like the head gasket, and that it's been running smoothly since. It's impressive that you drive it hard and it's still so reliable! I can understand why you're not even considering trading it in yet. It sounds like a fantastic investment that you plan on keeping for at least another 2 or 3 years. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

My trusty old car just hit 125,000 miles! It's been with me for 11 years, and while I haven't always been the best at keeping up with maintenance, it's been a reliable companion. Unfortunately, it's starting to show its age with a few repairs needed, including the electronics and head gasket. I even had to rig a fix for the shifter connections when they broke. Recently, the transmission/clutch has been acting up and it even stalled on the highway last week. The air conditioner needs to be refilled annually and the struts needed replacing last year. The paint, speakers, wheel covers, and outside plastic door trim have seen better days. Despite its appearance, it's been a faithful ride that's taken me where I needed to go. However, it's time to consider the cost of repairs and whether it's worth it to keep it going.

This car is amazing! I've been using it to deliver newspapers in Minnesota for six years now, and it still runs like a dream. Routine maintenance is a breeze, although it can be a bit cramped. I never would have thought that I'd still be driving it after all this time, but it still looks and acts like it's brand new.

I've had my neon since '96 and have put a lot of miles on it - about 185,000 to be exact. I didn't have any problems until last year when the car started to act up little by little, asking for something new every month. Like everyone else, the head gasket started to leak oil, and then about three months ago, my water pump and timing belt went out. Finally, last week my gas pump gave out. To tell you the truth, I'm still satisfied with my car, even though I've had to fix it so many times lately. Before that, it never gave me any problems, and believe me, I've really abused it!

I purchased my Neon last December from a well-known dealership that unfortunately has a reputation for selling 'bad cars'. At the time of purchase, I was unaware of this fact. Since then, I have only had to replace the brakes and a signal bulb, and my car has now reached 93,960 miles. Although it can be a bit rough at times, overall it runs well. The dealership assured me that a new head gasket kit had been installed, so I hope that they were truthful. I certainly don't want to end up in court like some other people have.
