1999 Dodge Viper problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Viper is a sports car that was manufactured by Dodge (by SRT for 2013 and 2014), a division of American car manufacturer FCA US LLC from 1992 until 2017, having taken a brief hiatus in 2007, and from 2010 to 2012. Production of the two-seat sports car began at New Mack Assembly Plant in 1991 and moved to Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in October 1995.

Although Chrysler considered ending production because of serious financial problems, on September 14, 2010, then-chief executive Sergio Marchionne announced and previewed a new model of the Viper for 2012. In 2014, the Viper was named number 10 on the "Most American Cars" list, meaning 75% or more of its parts are manufactured in the U.S. The Viper was eventually discontinued in 2017 after approximately 32,000 were produced over the 26 years of production.

The 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time on a Viper varies from around 3.5 to 4.5 seconds. Top speed ranges from 160 mph (260 km/h) to over 200 mph (320 km/h), depending on variant and year.

Common 1999 Dodge Viper problems

The Dodge Viper, a beloved sports car with a cult following, is generally reliable but not without its issues. One of the most commonly reported problems is a driveline clunk, which affects 22 owners across 16 model years, including 1992-1998, 2000-2006, and 2008-2009. The problem typically occurs at around 11,782 miles and is attributed to worn-out or damaged driveline components such as the drive shaft or u-joints. The cost to fix this issue can vary depending on the severity of the damage and the components that need replacing.

Another common complaint from Dodge Viper owners is a clicking or popping noise from the clutch or transmission, which has been reported by 21 people across 16 model years ranging from 1992 to 2009. The average mileage at which this issue occurs is 32,000. A misalignment between the rear axle and the driveline often causes the problem, and repairs typically involve installing matched hubs and yokes on the rear axle. The cost of this fix varies depending on the extent of the damage and whether it has caused additional issues.

Water leakage between the top and side curtains is another common Dodge Viper problem, reported by 16 owners and affecting 14 model years from 1992 to 2009. The issue typically occurs after 24,000 miles. While this problem is relatively simple to fix by installing updated right- and left-side rails to prevent water from seeping through, it can still cause inconvenience, especially in rainy weather.

In addition to these issues, earlier Vipers are known for leaking from the thermostat gasket, leaks from the rear main seal and timing cover gaskets, and the weight of the power window motors and glass making the coupe doors likely to sag over time. These issues can be fixed by adjusting the hinges or addressing the leaks.

While these common Dodge Viper problems might not be deal-breakers for some shoppers, they are still issues to remember. Regular maintenance and proper care can help prevent problems, and joining a community like the Viper Owner's Association can provide valuable resources and support for Viper owners.

Positive 1999 Dodge Viper car reviews

  1. Leif Lowe 2024-07-19

The design of this car is truly timeless. It's impossible to get tired of looking at it. Every time I start it up, the engine roars with power. The exhaust note is one of the best on the street. The color combination is also a standout feature - the red exterior with black interior, red shifter and steering wheel, and yellow wheels really make it pop. Whenever I take it to a car show, it always attracts the most attention out of all the super cars.

Hey there! It seems like you're looking for a quick and sporty ride, but you're having some trouble with oversteer. Let's see how we can help you out!

  3. Nicholaus Kilback 2024-05-11

I can tell you that I absolutely adore this car! It's definitely my favorite one yet. Not only is it a blast to drive, but it's also a real head-turner.

  4. Adelbert Purdy 2024-04-05

This car is still a rock star after two decades! It's one of the most underrated and underpriced supercars out there. The Edmunds value calculator estimates it at $25k, but the going rate for a 20k mile Blue and White GTS is almost double that, which is less than a 50% depreciation rate in all these years. The resale value is great! Forget about the overpriced GTRs, Lambos, etc. which will not have as timeless of a design as this Viper. Even if a GTR wasn't as fast as it is, would you really think it was cool? Lambos would still be cool even if they were slow, but one would think it was way faster than it was for the money. In this particular model Viper, with the forged internals, there's endless amounts of horsepower available with adding turbos and superchargers while costing tens and thousands of dollars less. I purchased this vehicle to enjoy for myself, then realized how much attention and admirers it still gets wherever it's driven. Dodge essentially put a race car on the road and included it with only the essentials. The A/C and power windows were just an added bonus. I rated the survey as well as I did because when you purchase a car like this, gas mileage, luxury, and spa comfort are not a concern. The icing on the cake is that values will only continue to increase while expressing being proud to be an American!

A car that's not only fun to drive but also packs a lot of raw power and is highly reliable.
