2009 Nissan Gt-r problems

The Nissan GT-R (Gran Turismo–Racing; model code: R35; Japanese: 日産・GT-R; Nissan GT-R) is a car built by Japanese marque Nissan since 2007. It has a 2+2 seating layout and is considered both a sports car and a grand tourer. The engine is front-mid mounted and drives all four wheels. It succeeds the Nissan Skyline GT-R, a faster variant of the Nissan Skyline. Although this model was the sixth-generation to bear the GT-R name, it is no longer part of the Skyline line-up. The car is built on the PM platform, derived from the FM platform used in the Skyline and Nissan Z models. Production is conducted in a shared production line at Nissan's Tochigi plant in Japan.

As per Nissan's intention of creating a world beating sports car, the GT-R brand was revived as part of the Nissan Revival Plan. Overall development began in 2000, following seven years of development and testing, including the introduction of two concept models in 2001 and 2005. The production version of the GT-R was unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. The GT-R is a brand-new car built on the PM platform, and featured innovative concepts and technologies, such as advanced aerodynamics, the VR38DETT engine, an active suspension system and the ATTESA E-TS Pro all-wheel-drive system, making it the first ever rear mounted independent transaxle all-wheel-drive vehicle. It is one of the first production cars to feature launch control and a dual-clutch transmission as well. The overall body is made out of steel, aluminium and carbon-fibre. In 2009 it set a record for the fastest accelerating 4-seater production car.

The GT-R is offered worldwide, unlike its predecessors which were sold in a limited number of markets. It received various facelifts and updates to be up to date with the competition, and several special editions were also offered during its prolonged production span. The car is used in motorsports, notably winning championships in the FIA GT1 World Championship, Super GT and in various GT3 racing series, including the GT World Challenge. It is well received among enthusiasts and automotive publications as well, British motor magazine Top Gear named it as "one of the most incredible cars of any kind ever built", due its exceptional performance and practicality given at an affordable price. Despite being one of the fastest production cars, it has won numerous notable accolades such as the World Performance Car of The Year among many others.

Sales in the Australian market were ceased due to new side impact regulations. In the European market, including the United Kingdom were similarly suspended, due to newly implemented noise regulations. Currently, the car is primarily available only in the North America, Japan, and some markets.

Common 2009 Nissan Gt-r problems

The Nissan GT-R 2009, despite being an incredibly well-engineered vehicle, is not completely free of faults. Here are some of the most common problems you may encounter as an owner of this car, based on the complaints and experiences of other owners:

  • Brakes: As with all performance cars, the Nissan GT-R can take a lot out of its brakes. This is an easy fault to spot, as you'll notice a marked increase in braking distance, especially in the wet, as well as noise upon applying the brakes. Usually, brake discs can be checked by eye, and you're looking for small cracks around the edges of the drilled holes in the plate, which are a surefire sign that the discs are loosing effectiveness.
  • GT-R Transmission: The gearbox, clutch, and transmission components of the Nissan GT-R are known to cause more problems than all the other systems combined. Early models, in particular, are known to have big problems with the control solenoids, which can lead to broken or worn components. These are expensive to repair, mainly because Nissan insists on not supplying any gearbox parts.
  • Lights: Believe it or not, one of the problems you're likely to experience with the Nissan GT-R is condensation within the headlights. This is due to a design issue with the head-lamp's vents and the seals. This is an easy one to spot, as you should be able to see drops of water on the inside of the unit with your naked eye. Unfortunately, you cannot take the unit apart and clean it or clear of the water, and you’ll have to purchase a replacement part.

These common problems do not diminish the fact that the Nissan GT-R is still an incredibly roadworthy car that'll get you from A to B in scorchingly quick times. It's one of those cars that manages to be a high-end status symbol without the high-end price, making it a very attractive option for the average man or woman who wants to purchase a prestige car. However, it's essential to be aware of these potential issues and take the necessary precautions when purchasing a used Nissan GT-R to ensure you end up with a seriously cool car.

Is the 2009 Nissan GTR reliable?

It has a strong reputation for reliability, and the mechanical package is surprisingly robust. There are reports of a rattle caused by a mobile bearing in the flywheel shaft, which seems to affect all cars to a greater or lesser degree and is expensive to set right.

Why are 2009 GTR bad?

2009 Nissan GT-R

One of the main pain points of the 2009 GT-R is its electrical system. Many users reported that the LEDs in the dash cluster had gone out, making it difficult to see the speed and gear at night. This issue seems to be a common problem and has been discussed in various forums.

Is the Nissan GT-R a reliable car?

For a sports car, it will last a decent time on the road before garnering expensive repairs. However, according to motorbiscuit.com, you can't work the vehicle very hard, or it might not last longer than 150,000 miles before it needs extensive fixes. The Nissan GT-R works pretty well for a sports car.

What is the disadvantage of GT-R?

What are the downsides to owning a Nissan GT-R? The GTR itself, when first bought Brand New from the Nissan Dealership, is the crazy high price. The GTR Premium, which is the cheapest & basic of all GTR models have an average starting MSRP of $120,000. That's way too high for a Nissan.

  • VIN: JN1AR54F89M
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I NOTED AN ERROR MESSAGE ON MY DASH REGARDING A FAILURE TO THE ABS.I WENT TO THE DEALER WHO PULLED A CODE "C1111" FOR A FAILED HYDRAULIC CONTROL ASSEMBLY; A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR. ONLINE RESEARCH ON GT-R BLOGS, AND ELSEWHERE REVEAL THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON EARLY GT-RS, AFFECTING A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THEM AT LOW MILEAGE. I CONTACTED NISSAN'S GT-R REPORT LINE, AND THEY WERE OF NO HELP. I RECENTLY SAW A RECALL ON OTHER NISSAN PRODUCTS RELATED TO THEIR ABS SYSTEMS. ALTHOUGH THIS IS A SMALL NUMBER OF MANUFACTURED CARS, THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY DEVICE, AND I BELIEVE NEEDS TO BE SCRUTINIZED CAREFULLY. THANK YOU. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-01-07
  • VIN: JN1AR54F09M
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: ABOUT A YEAR AGO, EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE AT A STOP LIGHT WITH THE CAR IDLING, WE WOULD HEAR A SLIGHT RATTLING NOISE. BUT EVERY TIME WE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, WHICH IS ONLY A FEW MILES FROM OUR HOUSE, THE NOISE WAS NOT THERE OR NOT ENOUGH TO BRING IT INTO SHOP TO BE CHECKED OUT SO NOTHING WAS EVER DOCUMENTED. THE NOISE WAS INTERMITTENT BECAUSE IT WAS THE EARLY STAGES OF THE "RATTLE FROM THE FLYWHEEL HOUSING" CONDITION. ONE TIME MY HUSBAND BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND WITHOUT CHECKING IT IN LET THE GTR TECH HEAR A RECORDING HE MADE OF THE NOISE WHEN IT WAS HAPPENING. THE TECH RESPONSE WAS THAT THE SOUND DID APPEAR TO BE THE INFAMOUS "FLY WHEEL HOUSING RATTLE," BUT WHEN HE HEARD THE CAR RUNNING AT THAT TIME, THE INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WAS NOT OCCURRING AND HE REPLIED TO THE SLIGHT NOISES WE WERE HEARING AS NORMAL TO THIS CARS DESIGN. NOW THE NOISE IS WORSE BECAUSE THIS CONDITION DEVELOPED TO THE POINT WHERE IT IS NO LONGER INTERMITTENT. ON 11/25/13 MY HUSBAND TOOK THE CAR TO NISSAN OF SMITHTOWN AND WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, AND COULD BRING IT IN AT OUR COST. NISSAN'S SERVICE BULLETIN IS AT09-010 NTB09-147 2009-2010 GT-R RATTLE FROM FLYWHEEL HOUSING DECEMBER 18, 2009. THIS IS A CONDITION THAT DEVELOPS OVER TIME, NOT ONE THAT ONE MOMENT IT WORKS AND THE NEXT IT DOESN'T. IT'S NOT THAT MY HUSBAND DID NOT DOCUMENT THE PROBLEM BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED OR THAT THE CONDITION PROGRESSED TO THE POINT OF NEEDING ATTENTION TWO MONTHS AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, BUT THAT NISSAN IS TRANSFERRING THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THEIR DESIGN FLAW, WHICH THEY HAVE DOCUMENTED WITH THEIR SERVICE BULLETIN, TO THE UNSUSPECTING OWNER WHO MAY HAVE A SIMILAR SITUATION WHERE THIS FLYWHEEL RATTLE HAPPENS TO THEM OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY. BUYER BEWARE! WE STRONGLY BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM! WE ARE URGENTLY REQUESTING YOUR ASSISTANCE IN THIS ISSUE. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-07
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: 2009 NISSAN GT-R DEVELOPS A STRONG IN-CABIN SMELL OF GAS FUMES DURING "SPIRITED DRIVES" ON THE RACE TRACK. THIS HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE TIME I'VE TAKEN IT TO THE TRACK AND THE SMELL IS OVERWHELMING. NISSAN REDESIGNED THE EVAP SYSTEM FOR 2010, SO IT SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE ALREADY. I HAD MY EVAP VALVE CHANGED WITH NO IMPROVEMENT IN THE SITUATION. MANY OTHER GT-R OWNERS ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE... SEE: HTTP://WWW.NAGTROC.ORG/FORUMS/INDEX.PHP?SHOWTOPIC=30072 SOME OF THESE EVENTS HAPPEN EVEN DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, BUT IT SEEMS THAT DRIVING AT THE RACE TRACK UNDER HIGH LOADS BRINGS THE SMELL OUT IN MOST GT-R'S. ANOTHER ISSUE WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE RELATED IS THAT WHEN REFUELING THE CAR GAS WILL OFTEN POUR OUT OF THE FILLER OPENING WHEN REMOVING THE PUMP HANDLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN FILLING IT RAPIDLY AND WHEN THE CAR IS HOT.

  • Summary: DRIVING A 2009 NISSAN GT-R ON A ROAD COURSE RESULTS IN A STRONG FUEL SMELL WITHIN THE PASSENGER CABIN. THIS APPEARS TO OCCUR FREQUENTLY IN OTHER GT-R'S AS WELL. IN FACT, NISSAN REDESIGNED THE FUEL TANK AND EVAP CANISTER SYSTEM IN 2010 GT-R'S BECAUSE OF THESE ISSUES. *TR

2009 Nissan Gt-r recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2009 Nissan Gt-r.

2015-02-02
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING:COLUMN
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2008 Infiniti EX35 vehicles equipped with the power tilt/telescope option included in the premium package, manufactured June 29, 2007, to April 25, 2008, 2009 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles manufactured October 31, 2007, to April 16, 2008, and 2009 Nissan GT-R vehicles manufactured March 14, 2007, to April 25, 2008. The steering column outer tube may not be round, resulting in extra stress being applied to the upper steering bearing. This stress may cause the bearing retainer to fracture, creating extra play in the steering wheel or a possible loss of steering.
  • Consequence: Extra play in the steering wheel or a loss of steering may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering shaft on the Infiniti EX35, FX35, and FX45 vehicles, and will replace the steering column assembly on the Nissan GT-R vehicles, free of charge. The recall began on March 9, 2015. Infiniti owners may contact customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Nissan owners may contact the GT-R hotline at 1-866-668-1487.

Positive 2009 Nissan Gt-r car reviews

  1. Jeramie Eichmann 2024-09-22

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my new car. I ordered it back in January and it finally arrived in late October. I have to say, it was definitely worth the wait! The build quality is excellent and the comfort and interior design are surprisingly good for a supercar in this price range. I'm really impressed with the value for money. The only thing I would change is the exhaust - it's nice at low RPM, but almost disappears at speed. I'm not looking for anything too loud, just something that gives a bit more of a suggestion of what the car can do. But overall, I'm really happy with my purchase. Thanks for listening!

  2. Kameron Kozey 2024-09-17

Thanks for sharing your perspective on the car! I appreciate your insights as a mechanic and former SCCA racer. I also found it helpful that you corrected a couple of errors in the other reviews. It's great to know that there is an outside temperature gauge and that the dash display will warn you of icy conditions. I can understand your frustration with doing your own service on the car, as it seems like it can be quite challenging to get at the mechanicals. It's good to know that the car gets better the more miles you put on it, and it definitely sounds like a super car!

  3. Reginald Block 2024-09-16

You've had a lot of fast cars, but none have been as fun as this package. It beats all the others. The car on the track is sick, and you can't find its limit. It's definitely the car of the decade. No one gives you the performance of this car for the price. Nothing corners like it. The only car that even comes close is the Lexus. They're taking orders now for $375. I sold my Porsche Carrera.

  4. Hayley Rempel 2024-08-08

I've put in 5,800 miles on this car and I can confidently say that it's worth every penny. The style of this car, along with its limited delivery from Japan, is a huge advantage for the consumer. Heads will definitely turn when you own this GTR. The performance is outstanding, with power and speed that every sports car enthusiast would want. I traded my SL55 AMG for this and it was definitely worth it. The only downside is the rough and bouncy suspension, but other than that, it's perfect. I do wish they had a manual option. I've never used the launch control since it scares me, but this vehicle is already incredibly fast. I took it to Vegas and ran up to 160mph without any issues. Overall, I would give the GTR a 9/10 rating.

  5. Kayden Conn 2024-07-18

I couldn't agree more, the technology in this car is truly amazing! When you add it all up, this car delivers in every way possible. The engine is absolutely phenomenal, with gobs of power and a flat torque curve. The two small IHI turbos spool up very quickly, making the car feel more like a V-8 than a juiced six. The DCT shifts smoothly in norm and comfort modes, and bangs swift and hard in race mode. Although I downrated the 'fun to drive' category, it's only because this car is so deadly serious, and one has to be very attentive to the power and the braking, both of which are amazing. My S2000 was more fun to drive, but I do not regret buying the GT-R one bit. It gets a lot of attention everywhere I go, and I like to keep a low profile, but I am happy with the attention it brings.
