2006 Audi A6 problems

audi logo

The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.

All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.

Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

Common 2006 Audi A6 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2006 Audi A6, several common problems have been reported:

  • Diesel Engine Oil Consumption:
    • Diesel engines in the 2006 Audi A6 tend to consume oil between services. Owners are advised to regularly monitor oil levels and service intervals to prevent engine damage.
  • Electrical System Gremlins:
    • Nearly 40% of 2006 Audi A6 cars face electrical system problems. Warning lights on the dashboard or sudden performance drops may indicate issues with the engine's ECU. Prompt attention is necessary to address these concerns.
  • Rear Wheels Rubbing:
    • Some users have reported rear wheels rubbing on wheel arches, particularly in S line cars when loaded. This issue may require attention to prevent tire wear and ensure safe driving conditions.
  • Transmission Problems:
    • Owners have experienced juddering during acceleration, likely due to contaminated automatic transmission fluid with coolant. Replacing the radiator, ATF filter, and cleaning pipework can resolve this issue.
  • Propshaft Bearing Issues:
    • For Audi A6 models with quattro four-wheel-drive, a whining noise at 30-40mph on cold days may indicate a failing centre propshaft bearing. Replacing the bearing is necessary to address this problem.
  • Oil Pressure Concerns:
    • Low oil pressure warnings can be triggered by faulty oil filter covers and housing, leading to oil leaks. Replacing these components and changing the oil can rectify this issue.
  • Starter Motor Relay Faults:
    • Owners may encounter starting issues due to a faulty starter motor relay. Checking the wiring and replacing the starter motor if necessary can resolve this problem.

These common problems with the 2006 Audi A6 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

I AM CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY OF THOSE OF MY FAMILY, AS THE RECALL POINTS OUT THAT A METAL MESH WOULD DEPLOY ALONG WITH THE AIRBAG CAUSING POTENTIAL DEATH. AT THIS POINT, I WOULD APPRECIATE IF AUDI OF AMERICA WAS TO PURCHASE MY VEHICLE BACK.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-02-02
  • VIN: WAUDH74F76N
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: AT 150K MILES, EXPERIENCED NO CRANK, NO START. TOW TO DEALER, AND I HAD ALREADY DONE SOME TRIAGE. THEY DID 2 HRS OF TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEMS THAT WERE NOT EVEN RELATED, SO I TOOK THE CAR BACK. FOUND A TRUST WORTHY MECHANIC AND HIS DIAG SUGGESTED THE SCM BURNED OUT TAKING THE PCM AND ECM ALONG WITH IT. THE COST WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE $6000 RANGE AS HE STATED A %40 FAILURE RATE AFTER 150K IN ALLDATA. HE ALSO SAID, IF I REPAIR IT, I NEED TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN AS WELL BECAUSE I WILL JUST HAVE ISSUES DOWN THE ROAD IF I DONT. THE CAR ALSO HAD A SLOW OIL LEAK. THE PLACE WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR SAID THE REPAIR IS NOT WORTH THE COST, SO THAT FACTORED INTO MY DECISION NOT TO INVEST IN REPAIRS. THE OIL LEAK WAS SLOW AND I NEVER HAD TO TOP OFF THE OIL, BUT IT WAS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO KNOW IT WAS AN ISSUE. THAT LEAK WAS PRESENT AFTER 80K MILES. SO I HAD TO MAKE THE UNFORTUNATE DECISION NOT TO INVEST ANY MONEY INTO AN ATTEMPTED FIX. I WAS AT THE GAS STATION, HAD JUST FILLED UP THE GAS TANK, HAD NEW STRUTS, NEW BATTERY AND PRIOR TO IT NOT STARTING, THE CAR WAS RUNNING SO REALLY GOOD. IT LOOKED GREAT AND PEOPLE OFTEN THOUGHT IT WAS WAY NEWER THAN IT WAS. THERE WAS WAY TO MUCH VALUE IN THE CAR TO TRASH IT, BUT VARIOUS PARTIES ONLY OFFERED $200 TO SCRAP IT. THIS IS A HIGH END CAR FOR AUDI AND I CANT BELIEVE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO IMPLEMENT A KILL SWITCH AFTER 150K MILES. I WAS PLANNING ON KEEPING THAT CAR FOR A LONG TIME. NOW UNEMPLOYED, I HAVE TO BUY A CAR I CANT AFFORD.

Negative 2006 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Dominic Walter 2024-11-21

The car has unfortunately experienced several issues, including problems with the sunroof and suspension, as well as a transmission failure. Despite the dealer's suggestion to purchase a different model, I remain committed to my CVT. While there are still some lingering noises and rattles, I am confident that these issues can be resolved. Thank you for considering Audi as a potential option.

Positive 2006 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Junius Bashirian 2024-11-12

This is my second Audi. The first one was 10 years ago. That car felt like it was trying to be

  2. Charley Nader 2024-10-22

That was the friendliest ride I have ever experienced.

  3. Gaetano Koss 2024-10-08

I test drove everything in the A6's class. The Audi is heads and shoulders above the competition. The interior feels like someone actually thought about it, the suspension is comfortable at any speed yet can still be tossed around without any complaint. The quattro still amazes me everyday. My only complaint is with all the warning noises this car has, in particular the seatbelt 'ding' and the low fuel warning. I know we should all wear our seatbelts, but come on, I don't need the car to constantly tell me. The low fuel warning scares me every time, I think just a light would be sufficient.

  4. Craig Kirlin 2024-10-03

Put the shifter in Sport mode or use Tiptronic and you can have a blast without needing that third car. The AWD is spectacular, not just in snow and rain, but all the time. I couldn't be happier with the manufacturer and the dealer who sold and services it. The value and pleasure are immense. Give it a try, you'll love it!

  5. Duncan Gutkowski 2024-09-27

The A6 is a fantastic car! It may not be the best car I've ever driven, but it's definitely the best car I've ever owned. The superior performance, comfort, and safety make it a great choice for anyone looking for a luxury sedan that won't break the bank. Plus, it's a real head-turner! While the electronics display can be a bit tricky to figure out at first, it's well worth the investment of time. I did have some minor seat problems that required a few trips to the dealer, but they were very courteous and helpful. Overall, I'm a proud owner of the A6.
