The Mercury Monterey is a series of full-size cars that were manufactured and marketed by the Mercury division of Ford from 1950 to 1974. Deriving its name from Monterey Bay, the initial Mercury Monterey served as the top-of-the-line two-door sedan model for 1950 and 1951 to compete with the hardtop models of Oldsmobile and Buick. It came with a vinyl roof covering, upgraded upholstery, and other features. The hardtop was introduced for 1952. During its production, the Monterey would be offered in multiple body styles, ranging from coupes, convertibles, sedans, hardtops, and station wagons.

Over its 22 years of production, the Monterey served variously as the flagship, mid-range, and entry-level offering of the full-size Mercury product range. The only Mercury nameplate to be in continuous production throughout the 1960s, the Monterey was positioned above the Medalist, Custom, and Meteor; later, it was positioned below the Turnpike Cruiser, Montclair, Park Lane, and finally the Marquis.

Following the 1974 model year, Mercury discontinued the Monterey, consolidating its full-size range down to the Marquis and Colony Park station wagon. For 2004, the Monterey nameplate was revived, becoming the counterpart of the Ford Freestar minivan; it was produced through the 2007 model year.

Common 2006 Mercury Monterey problems

The Mercury Monterey, particularly the 2006 model, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. The most significant issues seem to be related to the transmission, with a total of 17 complaints across the 1st generation Monterey models (2004-2007).

  • Transmission Failure: The 2005 Monterey has the highest number of transmission-related complaints, with 7 reports of transmission failure. This issue was also reported in the 2004 Monterey, with 6 complaints of transmission failure. The problem seems to persist in the 2006 Monterey, with 2 complaints of transmission failure and 2 complaints of the car "dying while driving".
  • Transmission Going Out: Another common transmission problem is the transmission going out, which was reported 6 times in the 2004 Monterey. This issue can lead to the car being inoperable and may require significant repairs or replacement of the transmission system.
  • Timing Chain Oil Leak: The 2007 Monterey has 1 complaint of a timing chain oil leak. This issue can lead to decreased engine performance and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Information Center Out: The 2006 Monterey has 2 complaints of the information center going out. This problem can affect the car's ability to display important information, such as speed, fuel level, and warning lights, potentially impacting the driver's ability to operate the vehicle safely.

These problems have been reported by owners and are not necessarily indicative of all 2006 Mercury Monterey vehicles. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision. It is also recommended to have any used vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing to identify any potential problems.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-11-29
  • VIN: 2MRDA22246B
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY FAMILY WAS TRAVELING ON THE I-65 SOUTH INTERSTATE AND THE VAN, 2006 MERCURY MONTEREY, STOP RESPONDING IN THE MIDDLE OF FAST TRAFFIC. IT TOOK ME BY TOTAL SURPRISE. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. SO, I INITIALLY THOUGHT IT HAD ACCIDENTLY WENT IN NEUTRAL BUT THAT WASN'T THE CASE. I TRIED A LOWER GEAR WITH NOT LUCK. NOT WANTING TO BE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE I THEN TURNED ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND FRANTICALLY MANEUVERED THE VAN TO THE SIDE OF THE BUSY INTERSTATE ROAD. ONCE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD MY HUSBAND TRIED EVERY GEAR AND THE VAN WASN'T RESPONDING IN ANY OF THEM. WE ENDED UP GETTING IT TOWED TO OUR HOUSE. AFTER WE GOT HOME MY HUSBAND STARTED RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM BECAUSE HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF A VEHICLE STOP RESPONDING LIKE THAT WITHOUT ANY WARNING SIGNS. HE SAID THIS HAS TO BE VEHICLE DEFECT AND LOOKED UP RECALLS FOR THE VAN ON THE NHTSA.ORG WEBSITE. THERE WASN'T A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE BUT THERE WERE PLENTY OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS EXACT SAFETY ISSUE. AFTER DOING MORE RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT THE 2004 MODEL OF THIS VAN HAD THE SAME ISSUE WHICH FORD DID DO A RECALL FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THE FORD COMPANY NEEDS TO BE IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED THAT THIS IS ALSO A BIG SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE 2006 MODEL. ONE THE REASONS MY HUSBAND BOUGHT THE VEHICLE WAS BECAUSE IT WAS BUILT BY FORD AND HE TRUSTED THEIR PRODUCTS. I HOPE FORD WILL TAKE THE COMPLAINT SERIOUSLY AND STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND GET THIS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER ON THE MERCURY MONTEREY 2006 VEHICLES RESOLVED QUICKLY.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-06
  • VIN: 2MRDA22206B
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: OUR VAN WAS DRIVING JUST FINE AND SUDDENLY, WITH NO WARNING AT ALL, WENT INTO NEUTRAL, STOPPING IN AN INTERSECTION. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS AROUND 88000 MILES ON IT. IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, AND THE LINCOLN DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER HAD FAILED. I NOTICED FORD HAD ALREADY RECALLED ALL OF THE 2004 FREESTARS AND 2005 MONTEREYS FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT YET SOMEHOW MY 2006 WITH A SEPTEMBER 2005 BUILD DATE WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. SO GUESS WHAT? FORD KNOWINGLY LEFT ME IN AN UNSAFE VEHICLE, AND NOW I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR BILL. FORD SO VERY CLEARLY KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND NEVER CORRECTED THE PROBLEM BY THE TIME BY VEHICLE WAS BUILT. NHTSA NEEDS TO ENCOURAGE FORD TO RECALL ALL THE 2006 AND PROBABLY ALL THE 2007S AS WELL. FORD SHOULD BE PAYING FOR MY REPAIR, NOT ME.

I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO MY RESIDENCE THEN TO THE REPAIR SHOP. NOT SURE HOW MANY COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE YOU NEED BEFORE NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER TO DECLARE A RECALL, BUT I'M SURE THE COMPLAINTS WRITTEN ON THIS SITE REPRESENT A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE OR ARE HAVING THIS VERY SAME ISSUE AS THE 2004 AND 2005 MODEL YEAR THAT FOR SOME REASON DID GET A RECALL ISSUED. IT IS TIME THE 2006 MODELS WERE INCLUDED.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-10-29
  • VIN: 2MRDA22226B
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: WE ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE 3RD ROW PASSENGER SEAT IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION AND DISCOVERED THE SEAT BRACKET WAS LOOSE. UPON REMOVING THE VEHICLE FROM THE GARAGE, WE OBSERVED RUST ON THE GARAGE FLOOR. AFTER INSPECTING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND CHECKING ON WEBSITES TO DETERMINE A POSSIBLE FIX TO THIS ISSUE, WE DISCOVERED THERE HAD BEEN A PREVIOUS 2013 FORD MOTOR CO RECALL #13S01 - CORROSION OF THIRD ROW SEAT ATTACHMENT (NHTSA ACTION # EA12003). HOWEVER BECAUSE WE BOUGHT OUR VEHICLE AND LIVE IN THE STATE OF KENTUCKY, OUR VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL (EVEN THOUGH OUR STATE USES LOTS OF SALT ON THE ROADS DURING THE WINTER SEASON). ON OCTOBER 29, 2015 I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THEY CONFIRMED THERE WAS RUST AND ADVISED I CONTACT THE NATIONAL FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AREA FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTION. I DID SO AND WAS ADVISED THERE WAS NO ACTIVE RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE. (AT NO TIME IN THE PAST WAS I INFORMED OF THE 2013 RECALL!) FORD ADVISED THEY COULD NOT HELP AND I SHOULD KEEP MY RECEIPTS FOR POSSIBLE REIMBURSEMENT SHOULD A FUTURE RECALL BE ISSUED. I BELIEVE THIS IS RIDICULOUS IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THERE WAS ALREADY A RECALL AND THE ONLY REASON I WASN'T INCLUDED IS BECAUSE OF THE STATE IN WHICH I RESIDE AND PURCHASED MY VEHICLE. KENTUCKY USES SALT ON THEIR ROADWAYS JUST LIKE SEVERAL SURROUNDING STATES--ILLINOIS, OHIO, INDIANA, WEST VIRGINIA--THAT WERE INCLUDED IN THE 2013 RECALL. IF THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A SAFETY ISSUE (NOW I'M CONCERNED TO HAVE ANYONE SIT IN THE 3RD ROW SEAT FOR FEAR OF THEIR INJURY OR HEAVEN-FORBID DEATH), THEN WHY WON'T THEY FIX MY VEHICLE?

I STARTED IT BACK UP AND WAS ABLE TO SHIFT THROUGH ALL OF THE GEARS BUT WOULD NOT MOVE JUST REV THE RPMS. HAD IT TOWED TO A TRANSMISSION PLACE AND WAS ADVISED THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS HAPPENING WITH THE TORQUE GETTING STRIPPED. CONTACTED FORD TO BE ADVISED IT WAS NOT INCLUDED FOR MY VIN EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE HAPPENING WITH OTHER VANS SAME YEAR AND MAKE. FORD REFUSES TO ASSIST OR COVER THIS REPAIR.

Negative 2006 Mercury Monterey car reviews

  1. Rodrick McGlynn 2024-10-11

We purchased our 2006 van in 2018 with low mileage. Although it shows its age compared to newer vehicles, my wife absolutely loves it, especially the heated and cooled front seats. At 6'1

Positive 2006 Mercury Monterey car reviews

  1. Michale West 2024-11-11

It's great to hear about your experience with different vans! From what you've shared, it sounds like the Mercury Monterey is your favorite. You've highlighted some really nice features, like the smooth and quiet ride, luxurious interior, and sporty exterior design. It's also convenient that everything is easily accessible with just the push of a button. It's clear that you really enjoy your van and it's great to hear that you receive compliments on it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  2. Reed Welch 2024-11-04

Wowza!! The minivan really exceeded my expectations. I didn't have any pre-conceived notions, BUT the van is a JEWEL. I bought it as a corporate lease with 62,000 miles and now it has 100,800 miles, but it's still in very good condition. The dealer in Knox. said it's in very good condition, BUT the age hurts its re-sale value. I think it's worth more due to its condition. It's a Luxury Edition with all the bells and whistles, even for the 2006 model year.

  3. Eusebio Zboncak 2024-09-17

Your Mercury Monterey is absolutely fantastic! It's the best minivan out there, with so many features that it's hard to mention them all. The van has everything you need, including a smooth and quiet ride. It has the features of a $50,000 luxury car, with beautiful wood accents in the steering wheel, doors, dash, and around the radio. The leather seats are incredibly comfortable, and there's plenty of cargo room - even more when the rear seats are folded down. And let's be clear, anyone who says Mercury is just for older people is sadly mistaken. 10 years ago, I might have agreed, but now Mercury is for the young and middle-aged, and I think they're great vehicles!

  4. Federico Fadel 2024-05-05

In my opinion, the Monterey is the best van out there. It is loaded with luxury features and has a powerful 4.2L V6. If you're looking for a great van, I highly recommend the Monterey.

  5. Jaylin Oberbrunner 2024-04-14

The Mercury Monterrey is definitely an upgrade from the Town and Country that I traded in for it. Not only does it have slightly better mileage, but it is also of much better quality. While I liked the T&C, I absolutely love the Monterrey. It has a lot more style and is more appealing both inside and out.
