2012 Subaru Wrx problems
The Subaru WRX is an all-wheel drive sport compact car manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru, originally based on the Impreza created for the World Rally Championship in 1992. Subaru claimed the name WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental". Starting with the 2015 models, the WRX lineup has been split from the Impreza, with a different body style that is not offered as an optional hatchback/wagon, being introduced as the separate Levorg model.
Impreza-based models (1992–2014)
The first three generations of the WRX, sold until the 2015 model year, were based on standard Impreza platforms, and replaced the Subaru RX hatchback and sedan.
The initial first-generation WRX models were based on the Impreza sedan (GC chassis code). They were followed by wagons (GF) in 1993 and the first upgraded WRX STi version, introduced in 1994. Several limited edition first-generation coupés were offered in the late 1990s and early 2000s which were never sold in the US and are highly sought after by Subaru enthusiasts.
The second-generation WRX (GD/GG chassis codes for the sedan/wagon, respectively) was brought over to the United States domestic market for model year 2002, with the STI being brought over for model year 2004. The initial "bugeye" front end styling (2000) was superseded by the "blobeye" in 2004 and the "hawkeye" in 2006. Under an agreement between Fuji Heavy Industries and General Motors, Saab sold its own version of the WRX, marketed as the Saab 9-2X, for the 2005 and 2006 model years. The 9-2X was available in both a standard (Linear) and performance (Aero) package, the latter was essentially identical to the second-generation WRX wagon, mechanically.
The third-generation WRX were sold as chassis codes GE (sedan) and GH (hatchback, replacing the earlier wagon version) initially; the third-generation WRX STI was sold with a widened chassis and was available only as a widebody hatch (GR). For the 2011 model year, the third-generation WRX sedan and hatch were moved to the GV and GR wide-body chassis variants, respectively, and a widebody sedan version of the STI (GV) was marketed. The Impreza was redesigned and the fourth-generation was first marketed for model year 2012, making it a distinct model from the WRX, which continued on the third-generation GV/GR chassis until 2014 in most markets.
The fourth-generation WRX were given the VA chassis designation and marketed as a separate model from the Impreza starting in 2015.

Common 2012 Subaru Wrx problems
The 2012 Subaru WRX is a popular choice among car enthusiasts for its high-performance capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most significant issues with the 2012 Subaru WRX is engine failure due to piston detonation.
Another common problem with the 2012 Subaru WRX is the brake light switch defect. A build-up of chemicals from scented cleaning products containing silicone can disable the brake light switch in millions of Subaru vehicles, preventing the brake lights from turning on when pressing the pedal. This issue can also affect other functions, such as the cruise control and electronic parking brake.
Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the windows, such as cracks and crooked installation. This problem can be particularly frustrating for drivers, as it can affect visibility and lead to costly repairs.
The 2012 Subaru WRX has also been recalled due to the Takata airbag inflator issue. The chemical inside of Takata airbag inflators can become unstable over time, leading to violent and sometimes deadly airbag deployments. The recall is for both driver and passenger side inflators in certain 2010-2014 model years, but is limited to certain states.
Finally, some owners have reported issues with the clutch and transmission in the 2012 Subaru WRX. These problems can lead to costly repairs and decreased performance.
In conclusion, while the 2012 Subaru WRX is a high-performance vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. These issues include engine failure due to piston detonation, brake light switch defect, window issues, Takata airbag inflator recall, and clutch and transmission problems. Prospective buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-11-01
- VIN: JF1GV7E67CG
- Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I HAD CHECKED MY OIL ABOUT A WEEK PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING. I WAS OUT ON THE INTERSTATE ON MY WAY TO GET MY OIL CHANGED WHEN I HEARD A LOUD KNOCKING AND LOST ALL POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT ON THE INTERSTATE. I HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHO TOLD ME ALL OF MY FULL SYNTHETIC OIL WAS GONE FROM THE ENGINE AND IT WAS BLOWN. THERE WAS NO SMOKING NO LEAKING NO LIGHTS OR ANYTHING TO LET ME KNOW SOMETHING WAS GOING WRONG UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE. SUBARU HAS BEEN ARGUING WITH ME FOR MONTHS AND FINALLY SAID THEY WOULD COVER HALF OF THE REPAIRS BUT I DO NOT FEEL I AM RESPONSIBLE AT ALL. I SHOWED MY MAINTENANCE RECORDS TO A SUBARU ENGINEER WHO SAID IT WOULD BE NO PROBLEM GETTING THE ENGINE FIXED AT NO COST TO ME. WELL APPARENTLY THAT DECISION WAS REVERSED BY SOMEONE AND NOW I ONLY GET HALF OF THE HELP THEY PROMISED ME. MY ENGINE HAS BEEN DEFECTIVE FROM THE GET GO AND SUBARU NEEDS TO OWN UP TO IT. SHOULD NOT BE REPLACING THAT ENGINE AT 56K ORIGINAL MILES AND I HAVE EVERY RECORD SHOWING I TOOK AMAZING CARE OF THAT CAR.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.
