The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact crossover SUV produced by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since October 2017. It was previewed by the XR-PHEV and XR-PHEV II concepts, revealed in 2013 and 2015. The production version was first introduced at the 87th Geneva Motor Show in March 2017. It slots between the RVR/ASX/Outlander Sport and Outlander in Mitsubishi's crossover lineup.

The diesel variant was launched in June 2019, followed by the PHEV variant in December 2020. The diesel is not available in North America. The name of this vehicle originates from the unrelated compact sports car, the Eclipse. Unlike the original Eclipse, however, the Eclipse Cross is not assembled in the United States as Mitsubishi closed its Diamond-Star Motors plant in Normal, Illinois in February 2016. Instead, the SUV is assembled in Japan, China, and Brazil.

Markets

The Eclipse Cross was available in Japan, Australia, and North America from the beginning of 2018. It was released in Japan on March 1, 2018. It was also released in Mexico in the beginning of February 2019. In Mexico, it is offered in GLX, GLS and Limited trim levels.

In Indonesia, the Eclipse Cross was revealed on July 9, 2019, and was launched at the 27th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show on July 18, 2019. It is only available in Ultimate trim level, in three exterior colour options: Red Diamond, Silky White and Amethyst Black. The Eclipse Cross was discontinued in Indonesia in March 2022.

For the 2020 model year in the United States, the Eclipse Cross received several changes. The base ES model received redesigned sixteen-inch alloy wheels and all trim levels were now available in front-wheel drive configuration, whereas only the base trim ES was available with front-wheel drive for the previous model year. SE and SEL models also received various standard safety features like forward collision mitigation. Every Eclipse Cross in the Canadian market is sold standard with Mitsubishi's S-AWC 4WD system. Canadian trim levels are the ES, SE, SEL, and top-trim GT, and all have an available 907 kg (2,000 lb) towing capacity.

Despite no mechanical or suspension differences, every Eclipse Cross sold in the U.S. market is rated to tow 1,500 pounds (680 kg) while in the Australian market, the towing capacity is rated at 1600 kg.

Common 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse cross problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Airbag Sensors: The airbag sensors in the Eclipse Cross are extremely sensitive, triggering even when a mobile phone is placed on the passenger seat and charging. This sensitivity can lead to issues with the airbag light not turning on and the seatbelt reminder not activating.
  2. Steering: Owners have reported instances where the car sways from side to side on its own and automatically sticks to one side. Despite inspections by dealers, no fix was offered, with dealers insisting that the car was normal.
  3. Headlights: Some drivers have experienced sudden failures of the headlights while the vehicle was in motion, leading to visibility issues and, in some cases, resulting in accidents due to poor lighting.
  4. Mirror Motor Failure: Failures of the mirror motor have been reported, reducing the driver's ability to see vehicles behind them. This poses a significant safety risk as clear visibility is crucial for safe driving, especially when changing lanes.
  5. Brakes: Complaints include instances where the brakes did not engage properly, with drivers experiencing a soft pedal and ineffective braking when attempting to slow down or stop the vehicle. This can be dangerous and compromise the car's ability to stop efficiently.
  6. Fuel Gauge: Owners have reported inaccurate readings from the fuel gauge, leading to uncertainty about the remaining fuel level. This issue has resulted in some drivers running out of fuel unexpectedly, causing inconvenience and potential safety hazards.

These problems highlight various safety and functionality issues that owners of the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross have encountered. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle for its owners.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
  • VIN: JA4AT5AA0KZ
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: know every motor is different and many resources have different stats, The engine in my 2019 Eclipse Cross has excessive oil consumption. The engine is consuming approximately 2.5-quarts (2.3-liters) of oil in approximately 2,500 to 3,000-miles (4,000 to 4,828-kilometers). The vehicle is approximately 4-years old and less than 50,000-miles. Using the best mileage in Mitsubishi's favor and an average of 30 mpg (my car computer has my average mileage higher) the oil consumption rate is at 0.6% for the engine. Ibut the common accepted stat for passenger car oil consumption is 0.05% for new motors. Mitsubishi's motor is consuming 12-times what is considered normal for a motor. This is a well documented problem on the internet, with repairs already required in Australia. Mitsubishi will not contact me (or the Dealer Service Center) back regarding this issue.

2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse cross recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse cross.

2018-09-14
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) is recalling certain 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Outlander Sport, 2018-2019 Eclipse Cross, and 2017-2018 Outlander vehicles equipped with a Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system that detects pedestrians. Due to incorrect software, the FCM-ECU (Electronic Control Unit) may apply braking for longer than needed, even after a pedestrian is no longer detected.
  • Consequence: If the FCM-ECU software activates the brake for longer than necessary, the driver may react by applying additional braking. The resulting rapid deceleration of the vehicle can increase the risk of a rear-end collision.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the FCM-ECU software with updated software, free of charge. The recall is began October 16, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-007.

Negative 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse cross car reviews

  1. Wendell Kertzmann 2024-09-01

Hello! I have the SEl with the touring package, and while it's loaded with features, I noticed that the keyless remote doesn't open and close the lift gate. I was surprised to find out that this feature isn't even included in the top of the line model. It's frustrating, especially considering that even the Outlander has this function. I hope Mitsubishi can provide a solution for this soon, as it's not only a safety concern but could also create problems for them if someone gets jammed.

  2. Carlo Koelpin 2024-07-12

This SUV has a lot more spunk and acceleration than other SUVs in its class that I have test driven. It rides more like a car than the harshness of others in this class. The SUV is comfortable to drive, although the arrangement of rear windows is a little odd. I disagree with claims about this SUV's driveability and ride on rough roads and outside noise. The ride is more like an auto than an SUV, which is a welcome change from the harsh and stiff rides of most others I have tested. The front seat room is very good, and the rear passenger seating is on par with all others I have tested. All in all, it seems to be the best SUV value for my money. Although the styling is a little out there, the price I paid overrides those concerns.

  3. Russel Stamm 2024-05-21

I purchased this car back in September. At first, I thought it was really cute and the diamond red color was gorgeous. However, the bar that goes across the back turned out to be a bit annoying when looking through the rearview mirror. Additionally, the acceleration is not the best, especially for highway driving. It takes a while to get up to speed and it struggles to maintain it. I also prefer the old navigation map over Apple play, as it requires data and can be unreliable in areas with poor internet connection. Perhaps this is due to living in the mountains, but I never had to deal with this issue with the old navigation. Despite these minor inconveniences, I am already considering purchasing a new car, which is why I am on this site.

  4. Tremaine Nikolaus 2024-03-23

Firstly, I don't want to give the wrong impression that I'm completely bashing this ride. However, I truly believe that cars are not made like they used to be. They tend to rattle more, bend more, and cry more. With that said, it's to be expected that the introductory year of bringing back the Eclipse name will have some faults. I recently bought an 18 Eclipse Cross with 15,000 miles on it. Although I told myself three days later that I should have kept my Tacoma, I must say that this car is nice. It just feels a bit cheap. The CVT transmission is a bit sluggish taking off, and there is a lot of body roll in corners. There is plastic everywhere, and the driver's seat makes noise. The door squeaks when opening up. It could be a salvage for all I know, that's how bad the dealership is. The sound system sounds blown or it could just be too weak. Mind you, a two-year-old vehicle with only 15,000 miles should not already be showing heavy signs of wear and tear. It's time for car makers to be held responsible for what they are making these days. Money is tight for most of us, and the economy is tough in these years. What happened to taking pride in building a reliable vehicle? Hey Mitsubishi, just a thought, don't put a sports car name on a power wheels car. Also, Mitsubishi, may I suggest that you drive the car you're making for 10 to 15 years like most of us have to and see how much in love you'll still be with that oh so 'amazing' CVT and sexy styling. I rest my case.

  5. Garrick Grady 2024-01-23

I have only owned this SUV for five months, and I am hearing a ticking sound coming from the engine. Additionally, while in park, the car revs on its own. I contacted the dealership, but their suggestion that it may be due to bad fuel is concerning, as this dealership has a history of dishonesty in order to make a profit. It is worth noting that I consistently use the same gas station when filling up.

Positive 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse cross car reviews

  1. Jocelyn Bernhard 2025-01-06

This is a great small SUV! I was pleasantly surprised by the ride quality, which was much better than I expected. I recently drove it on a mountain highway and it held up really well - no rolling at all. I find it enjoyable to drive, especially because the front seats are very comfortable and mold well to my body. The rear seats are also quite comfy, although they are a bit raised. It took me some time to adjust to the split rear windshield/window, but the visibility is good overall. I really like the design of the vehicle, and the quality of the materials used is above average. The small 1.5 litre turbo engine is peppy and provides more than enough power. Overall, I think this is a fantastic vehicle from Mitsubishi and a definite upgrade from the RVR.

  2. Norbert Grady 2024-09-26

I've been driving my 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross for 3 weeks now and I absolutely love it! The ride is so smooth and the safety features, like blind spot and lane change assist, are really impressive. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this SUV to anyone who's hesitant about buying one.

  3. Geovany Fay 2024-09-05

I've had my car for 3 weeks now, and I'm really enjoying it! The backup camera is especially great - it provides a wider view than most backup cameras. The dash display is also a highlight - it's clear and easy to read. The driving experience is fantastic, and the seats are really comfortable.

  4. Peter Herzog 2024-07-01

As my first BRAND NEW vehicle, I confidently purchased one of these. Upon initial inspection, I was immediately drawn to its attractive design, particularly the Mercury Gray Metallic color. Opting for the SE trim, I was pleased to find that it offered many features without the hefty price tag. While the paint quality could be improved as it chips easily on the hood, I have become accustomed to the CVT and its simulated shifts. One minor issue I have noticed is that the car tends to rev up high and search for stability when going over bumps, which can be a bit bothersome. Although I would prefer LED headlights to be standard and the reverse camera lines to be adjustable, I am still highly satisfied with my purchase, giving it a 4/5 rating overall.

  5. Maverick Hackett 2024-05-22

I live in Saskatchewan, Canada where winter temperatures go as low as -50. I'm happy to say that the Eclipse Cross SEL never disappoints. It starts up even in frigid temperatures, even if I forget to plug in the block heater. I'm really satisfied with this SUV.
