The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact crossover SUV produced by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since October 2017. It was previewed by the XR-PHEV and XR-PHEV II concepts, revealed in 2013 and 2015. The production version was first introduced at the 87th Geneva Motor Show in March 2017. It slots between the RVR/ASX/Outlander Sport and Outlander in Mitsubishi's crossover lineup.

The diesel variant was launched in June 2019, followed by the PHEV variant in December 2020. The diesel is not available in North America. The name of this vehicle originates from the unrelated compact sports car, the Eclipse. Unlike the original Eclipse, however, the Eclipse Cross is not assembled in the United States as Mitsubishi closed its Diamond-Star Motors plant in Normal, Illinois in February 2016. Instead, the SUV is assembled in Japan, China, and Brazil.

Markets

The Eclipse Cross was available in Japan, Australia, and North America from the beginning of 2018. It was released in Japan on March 1, 2018. It was also released in Mexico in the beginning of February 2019. In Mexico, it is offered in GLX, GLS and Limited trim levels.

In Indonesia, the Eclipse Cross was revealed on July 9, 2019, and was launched at the 27th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show on July 18, 2019. It is only available in Ultimate trim level, in three exterior colour options: Red Diamond, Silky White and Amethyst Black. The Eclipse Cross was discontinued in Indonesia in March 2022.

For the 2020 model year in the United States, the Eclipse Cross received several changes. The base ES model received redesigned sixteen-inch alloy wheels and all trim levels were now available in front-wheel drive configuration, whereas only the base trim ES was available with front-wheel drive for the previous model year. SE and SEL models also received various standard safety features like forward collision mitigation. Every Eclipse Cross in the Canadian market is sold standard with Mitsubishi's S-AWC 4WD system. Canadian trim levels are the ES, SE, SEL, and top-trim GT, and all have an available 907 kg (2,000 lb) towing capacity.

Despite no mechanical or suspension differences, every Eclipse Cross sold in the U.S. market is rated to tow 1,500 pounds (680 kg) while in the Australian market, the towing capacity is rated at 1600 kg.

Common Mitsubishi Eclipse cross problems

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Fuel Consumption: Another common issue with the Eclipse Cross is its poor fuel efficiency. The car's 1.5-liter turbocharged engine has been criticized for its low fuel economy, with many owners reporting that they struggle to achieve the official fuel economy figures. The car's small fuel tank also means that drivers need to refuel frequently, which can be inconvenient and expensive.
  • Rear Styling: The Eclipse Cross's rear styling has also been a source of frustration for many owners. The car's sloping roofline and high-mounted rear window can make it difficult to see out of the back, especially when reversing or changing lanes. The rear styling has also been criticized for its lack of practicality, with limited cargo space and a small rear window that can make it difficult to load and unload items.
  • Interior Quality: The Eclipse Cross's interior has also been criticized for its poor quality and lack of features. The car's infotainment system has been described as basic and outdated, with limited functionality and poor graphics. The car's interior materials have also been criticized for their cheap feel and lack of durability. The car's seats have been described as uncomfortable, with limited adjustability and poor lumbar support.
  • Rough Ride: The Eclipse Cross has also been criticized for its rough ride, especially when driving on uneven or rough roads. The car's suspension has been described as stiff and unforgiving, with limited travel and poor damping. This can make the car uncomfortable to drive, especially on long journeys or in areas with poor road surfaces.
  • Electrical Issues: The Eclipse Cross has also been reported to have several electrical issues, including problems with the car's Bluetooth and USB ports, air conditioning system, and infotainment system. These issues can be frustrating and difficult to diagnose, with some owners reporting that they have had to replace entire components to fix the problem.
  • Fog Lights: Some owners have reported issues with the car's fog lights, including problems with turning them off or on. This can be frustrating, especially in adverse weather conditions, and can affect the car's visibility and safety.
  • FCM System: The car's Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system has also been reported to have issues, with some owners reporting that the system can be overly sensitive or prone to false alarms. This can be distracting and frustrating, especially when driving in heavy traffic or in urban areas.

In conclusion, while the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has many positive attributes, including its sharp looks, fun-to-drive nature, and decent interior space, it also has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include a CVT gearbox, poor fuel efficiency, rear styling, interior quality, rough ride, electrical issues, fog lights, and FCM system problems.

    Vehicle year: 2020

Although I am disappointed to report that my car is experiencing transmission issues just over a year after purchase, I am confident that I will be able to resolve the issue. Despite having already had the transmission flushed and replaced, the problem persists and my car is currently unable to move in drive or reverse. While this will require a significant investment, I am committed to ensuring that my vehicle is in top condition. Although I am frustrated with the situation, I remain confident in my ability to handle it and will continue to take care of my car. While I may not choose to purchase a Mitsubishi again in the future, I understand that every car has its own unique issues and would not discourage others from considering this brand.

Hi there! I leased a 2022 EC right after its release in March of 2021. During the four months of summer, the AC worked fine. However, after a long winter, I did not use the AC again until the beginning of June and unfortunately, it did not work. It didn't occur to me to test my AC during the winter to see if it was working in order to fix it within the 12-month warranty. Since I work from home, I had less than 6K miles on the vehicle. The dealership wanted to charge me $200 for a diagnostic test which I did not do. After much research, I found numerous complaints about the same problem for this specific year and model. The reason it's significant is that after the release of this new model, there was a low number of vehicles imported into this country, and Mitsubishi has not done a recall. This is my sixth Mitsubishi, and this issue seems to be the result of poor manufacturing.

  4. Barrett Medhurst 2024-11-23

    Vehicle year: 2023

This vehicle reliably started every morning during the eight months I drove it and took me to my desired destinations. While there are few positive aspects to mention, I did appreciate its low gas consumption. However, the SUV had poor acceleration and a noticeable rattling from the back. Overall, it left a cheap impression and is not one to remember.

I recently purchased a 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross LE AWD and unfortunately, I am extremely disappointed with my experience. I would like to warn potential buyers to be cautious before making a purchase. Although the car looks pretty from the outside, the materials used are of poor quality and not worth the investment. Additionally, the car is very uncomfortable to drive in, especially for long periods of time. The seats are not supportive and can cause back pain. After only three weeks of ownership, the plastic parts of the door handle have already started to come off, and I am unsure if this is covered under warranty. While this car may be suitable for those looking for a decorative addition to their driveway, I cannot recommend it to anyone with children or those who plan on taking long car rides. As someone who is tall and wears a size L, I found this car to be unsuitable for my size. I am disappointed because I was excited to purchase this car after reading positive reviews, but I urge you to do your research and avoid making the same mistake I did.

  1. Carleton Weber 2025-03-28

    Vehicle year: 2019

I recently purchased this SUV in July, so I've had it for about two months now. One of the first things you'll notice is how stunning it looks, depending on the color you choose. I went with the metallic gray, and it shines just like the diamond red. The vehicle has sleek black accents and black 18” alloy wheels, as well as tinted privacy glass on the back passenger windows. The performance is really impressive, and the engine is quite powerful, especially when paired with the CVT transmission. The interior looks fantastic, and the seats are comfortable enough for longer trips. The back passenger seats recline and can be adjusted to fit child seats perfectly. They also fold down, allowing you to transport boxes and other wide items through the back and sides with ease. All doors open wide, and you get a lot of standard safety features that other expensive SUVs don't offer. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are great, and the trackpad for navigating the 7” display up front is a nice touch. My only complaint is that the vehicle leans a little more than I'm used to when taking sharp corners. However, this is likely just me coming from a Lancer, so I would advise taking it easy on the turns. The back window is split, which can be a bit of a nuisance when looking through the rearview mirror, but thankfully, there's a backup camera to help with that. I would have preferred some buttons for navigating the touchscreen, but I understand that's where companies are headed. I got used to it, but I'm not sure how older folks will react. There are two more trim levels above the LE, but for the price I paid, I would have liked heated seats and a sunroof. Other than that, it's a very sporty, roomy, and fuel-efficient SUV, so I feel like I made a great decision overall. I'll post another updated review in the coming months if anything changes. If you want to see a video, check out my YouTube channel at Gillis da kid.

The interior is simple, but still nice. I really love it, and the amount of power for a 4 cylinder is impressive. However, the ride can be a bit rough, especially when hitting bumps. Overall, it's a good vehicle.

I would have liked some buttons for navigating the touchscreen, but I guess that’s where these companies are going. I got used to it, but I don’t know how old school people will react to it. There are two more trim levels above the LE, but for the price that I paid, I feel like I should have gotten heated seats and a sunroof. Other than that, it’s a very sporty, roomy, and fuel-efficient SUV, so I feel like I made a good decision overall. I will do another updated review in the coming months if anything changes. I've been a loyal Kia customer since 2008. Recently, I was in the market for an AWD SUV for the upcoming winter, having driven an Optima for the last two winters. While on the road, I spotted an Eclipse Cross and decided to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised by the roomy and comfortable interior, which looks really nice. The car handles well and feels pretty peppy to me. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.

My wife and I recently returned from a vacation that took us through the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. We were thrilled to find out that upon returning 2 1/2 weeks later, the vehicle had averaged 31.3 mpg! Despite being loaded with stuff, it performed flawlessly!!
