The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact crossover SUV produced by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since October 2017. It was previewed by the XR-PHEV and XR-PHEV II concepts, revealed in 2013 and 2015. The production version was first introduced at the 87th Geneva Motor Show in March 2017. It slots between the RVR/ASX/Outlander Sport and Outlander in Mitsubishi's crossover lineup.

The diesel variant was launched in June 2019, followed by the PHEV variant in December 2020. The diesel is not available in North America. The name of this vehicle originates from the unrelated compact sports car, the Eclipse. Unlike the original Eclipse, however, the Eclipse Cross is not assembled in the United States as Mitsubishi closed its Diamond-Star Motors plant in Normal, Illinois in February 2016. Instead, the SUV is assembled in Japan, China, and Brazil.

Markets

The Eclipse Cross was available in Japan, Australia, and North America from the beginning of 2018. It was released in Japan on March 1, 2018. It was also released in Mexico in the beginning of February 2019. In Mexico, it is offered in GLX, GLS and Limited trim levels.

In Indonesia, the Eclipse Cross was revealed on July 9, 2019, and was launched at the 27th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show on July 18, 2019. It is only available in Ultimate trim level, in three exterior colour options: Red Diamond, Silky White and Amethyst Black. The Eclipse Cross was discontinued in Indonesia in March 2022.

For the 2020 model year in the United States, the Eclipse Cross received several changes. The base ES model received redesigned sixteen-inch alloy wheels and all trim levels were now available in front-wheel drive configuration, whereas only the base trim ES was available with front-wheel drive for the previous model year. SE and SEL models also received various standard safety features like forward collision mitigation. Every Eclipse Cross in the Canadian market is sold standard with Mitsubishi's S-AWC 4WD system. Canadian trim levels are the ES, SE, SEL, and top-trim GT, and all have an available 907 kg (2,000 lb) towing capacity.

Despite no mechanical or suspension differences, every Eclipse Cross sold in the U.S. market is rated to tow 1,500 pounds (680 kg) while in the Australian market, the towing capacity is rated at 1600 kg.

Common Mitsubishi Eclipse cross problems

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Fuel Consumption: Another common issue with the Eclipse Cross is its poor fuel efficiency. The car's 1.5-liter turbocharged engine has been criticized for its low fuel economy, with many owners reporting that they struggle to achieve the official fuel economy figures. The car's small fuel tank also means that drivers need to refuel frequently, which can be inconvenient and expensive.
  • Rear Styling: The Eclipse Cross's rear styling has also been a source of frustration for many owners. The car's sloping roofline and high-mounted rear window can make it difficult to see out of the back, especially when reversing or changing lanes. The rear styling has also been criticized for its lack of practicality, with limited cargo space and a small rear window that can make it difficult to load and unload items.
  • Interior Quality: The Eclipse Cross's interior has also been criticized for its poor quality and lack of features. The car's infotainment system has been described as basic and outdated, with limited functionality and poor graphics. The car's interior materials have also been criticized for their cheap feel and lack of durability. The car's seats have been described as uncomfortable, with limited adjustability and poor lumbar support.
  • Rough Ride: The Eclipse Cross has also been criticized for its rough ride, especially when driving on uneven or rough roads. The car's suspension has been described as stiff and unforgiving, with limited travel and poor damping. This can make the car uncomfortable to drive, especially on long journeys or in areas with poor road surfaces.
  • Electrical Issues: The Eclipse Cross has also been reported to have several electrical issues, including problems with the car's Bluetooth and USB ports, air conditioning system, and infotainment system. These issues can be frustrating and difficult to diagnose, with some owners reporting that they have had to replace entire components to fix the problem.
  • Fog Lights: Some owners have reported issues with the car's fog lights, including problems with turning them off or on. This can be frustrating, especially in adverse weather conditions, and can affect the car's visibility and safety.
  • FCM System: The car's Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system has also been reported to have issues, with some owners reporting that the system can be overly sensitive or prone to false alarms. This can be distracting and frustrating, especially when driving in heavy traffic or in urban areas.

In conclusion, while the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has many positive attributes, including its sharp looks, fun-to-drive nature, and decent interior space, it also has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include a CVT gearbox, poor fuel efficiency, rear styling, interior quality, rough ride, electrical issues, fog lights, and FCM system problems.

Latest negative Mitsubishi Eclipse cross car reviews

  1. Kane Prohaska 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2019

Although I am disappointed to report that my car is experiencing transmission issues just over a year after purchase, I am confident in my ability to address the problem. Despite having already had the transmission flushed and replaced, the issue persists and my car is currently unable to move in drive or reverse. While this will require a significant investment, I am committed to ensuring that my vehicle is in top condition. Although I am frustrated with the situation, I remain confident in my ability to handle it and will continue to take good care of my car. While I may not choose to purchase a Mitsubishi again in the future, I understand that every car has its own unique issues and would not discourage others from considering this brand.

  2. Garrett McKenzie 2025-01-11

    Vehicle year: 2023

Hi there! I leased a 2022 EC right after its release in March of 2021. During the four months of summer, the AC worked fine. However, after a long winter, I did not use the AC again until the beginning of June and unfortunately, it did not work. It didn't occur to me to test my AC during the winter to see if it was working in order to fix it within the 12-month warranty. Since I work from home, I had less than 6K miles on the vehicle. The dealership wanted to charge me $200 for a diagnostic test which I did not do. After much research, I found numerous complaints about the same problem for this specific year and model. The reason it's significant is that after the release of this new model, there was a low number of vehicles imported into this country, and Mitsubishi has not done a recall. This is my sixth Mitsubishi, and this issue seems to be the result of poor manufacturing.

  3. Barrett Medhurst 2024-11-23

    Vehicle year: 2023

This vehicle reliably started every morning during the eight months I drove it and took me to my desired destinations. While there are few positive aspects to mention, I did appreciate its low gas consumption. However, the SUV had poor acceleration and a noticeable rattling from the back. Overall, it left a cheap impression and is not one to remember.

  4. Colten Shanahan 2024-11-18

    Vehicle year: 2024

I recently purchased a 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross LE AWD and unfortunately, I am extremely disappointed with my experience. I would like to warn potential buyers to be cautious before making a purchase. Although the car looks pretty from the outside, the materials used are of poor quality and not worth the investment. Additionally, the car is very uncomfortable to drive in, especially for long periods of time. The seats are not supportive and can cause back pain. After only three weeks of ownership, the plastic parts of the door handle have already started to come off, and I am unsure if this is covered under warranty. While this car may be suitable for those looking for a decorative addition to their driveway, I cannot recommend it to anyone with children or those who plan on taking long car rides. As someone who is tall and wears a size L, I found this car to be unsuitable for my size. I am disappointed because I was excited to purchase this car after reading positive reviews, but I urge you to do your research and avoid making the same mistake I did.

  5. Johnathon Nolan 2024-10-26

    Vehicle year: 2024

The 2024 Eclipse Cross is a comfortable and decently fuel-efficient car that drives well. However, there are a few areas where Mitsubishi could improve. The backup camera quality is poor, and replacing it with a generic camera would be a step up. Additionally, the sound system is reminiscent of early 90s Audiovox or Radio Shack speakers. The headlights are also a major issue, as they only illuminate the road for 25 to 30 feet and fail to illuminate above road level. The lights are non-adjustable, and the sensors in the lights cast distracting shadows at the top of the illuminated area. While the brights setting solves the issue, the auto-brights turn themselves off when there are reflective signs on the road or when going uphill. If you don't enjoy music or night driving safety, this is a nice car. However, if you drive at night, I strongly recommend skipping this model. UPDATE: I have experienced issues with the traction control light and power dropping off when going over speed bumps, causing the RPMs to spike to 5500 and maintaining 20-30 mph when pulling into traffic for about a half mile. I alerted Mitsubishi Motors customer support several times, but they have not responded. I feel that Mitsubishi Motors should stand behind their product and address these issues. Unfortunately, their lack of response has been disappointing. I recommend considering other car brands to save yourself time and money.

    Vehicle year: 2023

I've owned the Eclipse Cross for two months now and it's been perfect for my needs. It's a great car for the price!

  2. Arden Price 2025-02-10

    Vehicle year: 2024

I can't recommend this vehicle enough! As someone who is 6'2, I was pleasantly surprised to find that even with the front seat adjusted for my comfort, there was still plenty of room in the back. The rear seats even recline for added comfort. With a towing capacity of 2000 lbs, I was able to haul an open trailer filled with mulch (around 800 lbs) with ease. The car felt stable throughout the trip, although the owner's manual does recommend using premium fuel when towing. I followed this advice and noticed improved throttle response and more power from the engine when accelerating and cruising. The engine itself is punchy and responsive, and the S-AWC system works incredibly well on dirt and snow-covered roads. In terms of fuel efficiency, I've been blown away by how much better it is than the EPA ratings. On my most recent long highway trip, I got 34 mpg, which is even better than the dash indicator suggested. If I had to nitpick, my only complaints would be that the factory tires are mediocre (although replacing them with Continentals made a huge difference), and the gloss black plastic inside the cabin scratches easily. However, these are minor issues that don't detract from the overall experience. I was initially hesitant to test drive this vehicle due to the factory MPG ratings, but I'm so glad I did. It's a real contender against the RAV4 and CR-V, which we also considered. Even after several years of use, it continues to perform flawlessly. The only thing to note is that it can struggle a bit at high highway speeds, but using premium fuel seems to help with this and also improves fuel efficiency. For around town, regular 87 fuel is perfectly fine.Last fall, we had the opportunity to tow our friend's powerboat out of a lake on a gravel boat launch. Despite the vehicle weighing near the 2000 lb towing limit, it performed the duty with ease. We did have the 4WD system in gravel mode, which helped compared to leaving it in normal. I'm much more confident now in the event we get our own boat in the future. At the moment, our average mpg is 27.8, which seems fine after this past winter with all the snow and cold. I was still able to get 30 mpg on the highway, but I'm looking forward to getting up to near mid 30's as the weather warms and improves. I can't recommend this vehicle enough and look forward to it lasting us into the future.

I absolutely adore my Eclipse Cross LE even a year after ownership update. It's amazing how many new and exciting things I keep discovering about this vehicle. Recently, I've been testing out its AWD system in gravel setting and experimenting with the ECO mode to see how much gas mileage I can get. While the MPG on sticker is 25/26, I was pleasantly surprised to get 34 mpg today while in Gravel, ECO mode. Not bad at all! I'm still having a blast with my Eclipse Cross and I believe it offers great value for money. When I was researching my next car purchase, I had a budget in mind and all wheel drive/four wheel drive was a must-have feature after several New England winters in a Nissan Versa. I looked into the crossover market and came up with a top three to go drive, look into and make a decision based on. I highly recommend ignoring the I also plan to have the tow package installed to carry my band gear from gig to gig. The tow capacity may only be 1500 lbs, but it will be perfect to get me and my band from one show to the next with all of our gear. My favorite thing about this ride is the quality to cost ratio. In my opinion, the bad reputation of the manufacturer translates into great savings for the buyer. Some reviews complain that the sticker price is too high in comparison to bigger, more well-known brands. However, this is a brand that is motivated to sell some vehicles and as such, they offer great discounts. I paid 5k off sticker for an exceptionally equipped SUV! With a decent down payment and good credit, I am paying less than 300 dollars a month for a GORGEOUS ride with tons of bells and whistles! Oh, and the best warranty in the business (tied with Hyundai and Kia, but they just recalled 600k vehicles for engine fires, so no thanks) at 5 years/60k bumper-to-bumper and 10 years/100k powertrain warranty to back it all up. I fully recommend giving the EC a shot. It is unfair to compare it to a sports car from twenty years ago, which I guess was Mitsubishi's biggest mistake in the marketing of this vehicle. It's not a sports car by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a good looking, affordable, versatile and dependable SUV. I've driven it through a foot of snow, I've driven it through bumper to bumper traffic, and it does a good job every time. Don't let the bad rep dissuade you if you're in the market for a crossover. There is a reason I chose this over Honda and Subaru. I implore you to go find out.

I've owned the Eclipse Cross for two months now and it's been perfect for my needs. It's a great car for the price!

I was initially hesitant to test drive the Eclipse Cross after reading negative reviews from so-called experts who trashed the car. However, upon visiting the dealer, I was pleasantly surprised to find about 15 leftover ECs sitting there, all shined up with big discounts on the windshield. I decided to test drive both the Outlander and the Cross, and I was really impressed with the EC. I ended up buying a Black SEL and got $8600 off the sticker. The car is smooth, quiet, fairly roomy, and gets great gas mileage. I took it on a 2500 mile trip a few weeks after I bought it and got 28-29 MPG running 75-80 with the AC running. The safety tech works perfectly, better than my Cadillacs, and I love the bronze stitching on the leather. Although it's not a powerhouse, it's not as slow as the 'experts' claim and is peppy enough to get out of its own way. In fact, on my trip, there is a stretch of road outside Wytheville VA that is a steep incline for about 6-7 miles going into the mountains, and this car handles it like a pro with no issues holding 75 MPH and just flowing by the other cars.It handles really well, and while the steering doesn't have a lot of feel, it has just enough weight to make it a pleasure to drive. The AWD system is impressive and keeps the car glued to the road. The CVT is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's perfectly fine and even has some fake shifts built in to mimic a normal automatic transmission. If Mitsubishi were to release a Ralliart version with more horsepower and a dual clutch, that would be amazing. However, for the price I paid, this small SUV is a fantastic choice. Like the Outlander, it's incredibly reliable and I would definitely recommend it and buy it again in a heartbeat.
