The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact crossover SUV produced by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since October 2017. It was previewed by the XR-PHEV and XR-PHEV II concepts, revealed in 2013 and 2015. The production version was first introduced at the 87th Geneva Motor Show in March 2017. It slots between the RVR/ASX/Outlander Sport and Outlander in Mitsubishi's crossover lineup.

The diesel variant was launched in June 2019, followed by the PHEV variant in December 2020. The diesel is not available in North America. The name of this vehicle originates from the unrelated compact sports car, the Eclipse. Unlike the original Eclipse, however, the Eclipse Cross is not assembled in the United States as Mitsubishi closed its Diamond-Star Motors plant in Normal, Illinois in February 2016. Instead, the SUV is assembled in Japan, China, and Brazil.

Markets

The Eclipse Cross was available in Japan, Australia, and North America from the beginning of 2018. It was released in Japan on March 1, 2018. It was also released in Mexico in the beginning of February 2019. In Mexico, it is offered in GLX, GLS and Limited trim levels.

In Indonesia, the Eclipse Cross was revealed on July 9, 2019, and was launched at the 27th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show on July 18, 2019. It is only available in Ultimate trim level, in three exterior colour options: Red Diamond, Silky White and Amethyst Black. The Eclipse Cross was discontinued in Indonesia in March 2022.

For the 2020 model year in the United States, the Eclipse Cross received several changes. The base ES model received redesigned sixteen-inch alloy wheels and all trim levels were now available in front-wheel drive configuration, whereas only the base trim ES was available with front-wheel drive for the previous model year. SE and SEL models also received various standard safety features like forward collision mitigation. Every Eclipse Cross in the Canadian market is sold standard with Mitsubishi's S-AWC 4WD system. Canadian trim levels are the ES, SE, SEL, and top-trim GT, and all have an available 907 kg (2,000 lb) towing capacity.

Despite no mechanical or suspension differences, every Eclipse Cross sold in the U.S. market is rated to tow 1,500 pounds (680 kg) while in the Australian market, the towing capacity is rated at 1600 kg.

Negative 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse cross car reviews

  1. Garrett McKenzie 2025-01-11

Hi there! I leased a 2022 EC right after its release in March of 2021. During the four months of summer, the AC worked fine. However, after a long winter, I did not use the AC again until the beginning of June and unfortunately, it did not work. It didn't occur to me to test my AC during the winter to see if it was working in order to fix it within the 12-month warranty. Since I work from home, I had less than 6K miles on the vehicle. The dealership wanted to charge me $200 for a diagnostic test which I did not do. After much research, I found numerous complaints about the same problem for this specific year and model. The reason it's significant is that after the release of this new model, there was a low number of vehicles imported into this country, and Mitsubishi has not done a recall. This is my sixth Mitsubishi, and this issue seems to be the result of poor manufacturing.

  2. Barrett Medhurst 2024-11-23

This vehicle reliably started every morning during the eight months I drove it and took me to my desired destinations. While there are few positive aspects to mention, I did appreciate its low gas consumption. However, the SUV had poor acceleration and a noticeable rattling from the back. Overall, it left a cheap impression and is not one to remember.

  3. Adolfo Boyer 2024-09-03

Having trouble opening the trunk while the car is still running? The gas latch door inside the car may be poorly constructed. Also, remember to turn off the car before leaving the radio on. If you find the seat belt too tight, don't hesitate to adjust it. The speedometer may not be digital, but it still gets the job done. While the dashboard controls are minimal, they are easy to use. If you experience any electrical glitches, it may be time to have your car serviced. And don't worry, even though it's a 2022 model, it's normal to need a check-up every now and then!

  4. Mitchell Reynolds 2024-08-17

If you're experiencing shifting delays, jumping, or grinding during acceleration, feeling the car shake at any speed, noticing a burning smell or whistling sounds coming from under the hood, along with an underpowered air conditioner that constantly clicks on and off, it might suggest that it could fail soon. Additionally, some customers have found the back seats to be a bit small, and some have expressed concerns about the overall design of the vehicle.

  5. Matt Kling 2024-08-06

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross I recently rented had some issues with its interior design. The seat was uncomfortable, the hatchback style with extra glass caused distorted vision, and the placement of the radio and backup camera screen made it difficult to see during daylight hours due to reflections. Additionally, the letters and numbers on the screen were too dim to read clearly, and the AC indicator was not clearly visible. The steering wheel was also overly sensitive. These issues detracted from an otherwise solid vehicle.

Positive 2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse cross car reviews

  1. Milan Feeney 2025-07-24

I absolutely adore my Eclipse Cross LE even a year after ownership update. It's amazing how many new and exciting things I keep discovering about this vehicle. Recently, I've been testing out its AWD system in gravel setting and experimenting with the ECO mode to see how much gas mileage I can get. While the MPG on sticker is 25/26, I was pleasantly surprised to get 34 mpg today while in Gravel, ECO mode. Not bad at all! I'm still having a blast with my Eclipse Cross and I believe it offers great value for money. When I was researching my next car purchase, I had a budget in mind and all wheel drive/four wheel drive was a must-have feature after several New England winters in a Nissan Versa. I looked into the crossover market and came up with a top three to go drive, look into and make a decision based on. I highly recommend ignoring the I also plan to have the tow package installed to carry my band gear from gig to gig. The tow capacity may only be 1500 lbs, but it will be perfect to get me and my band from one show to the next with all of our gear. My favorite thing about this ride is the quality to cost ratio. Despite the bad reputation of the manufacturer, it translates into great savings for the buyer. Some reviews complain that the sticker price is too high in comparison to bigger, more well-known brands. However, this brand is motivated to sell vehicles and offers great discounts. I paid 5k off sticker for an exceptionally equipped SUV! With a decent down payment and good credit, I am paying less than 300 dollars a month for a gorgeous ride with tons of bells and whistles! It also has the best warranty in the business (tied with Hyundai and Kia, but they just recalled 600k vehicles for engine fires, so no thanks) at 5 years/60k bumper-to-bumper and 10 years/100k powertrain warranty to back it all up. I fully recommend giving the EC a shot. It's not a sports car by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a good looking, affordable, versatile and dependable SUV. I've driven it through a foot of snow, I've driven it through bumper to bumper traffic. Either way, it does a good job every time. Don't let the bad rep dissuade you if you're in the market for a crossover. There is a reason I chose this over Honda and Subaru. I implore you to go find out.

  2. Joey O'Conner 2025-07-15

I can't recommend this vehicle enough! As someone who is 6'2, I was pleasantly surprised to find that even with the front seat adjusted for my comfort, there was still plenty of room in the back. The rear seats even recline for added comfort. With a towing capacity of 2000 lbs, I was able to haul an open trailer filled with mulch (around 800 lbs) with ease. The car felt stable throughout the trip, although the owner's manual does recommend using premium fuel when towing. I followed this advice and noticed improved throttle response and more power from the engine when accelerating and cruising. The engine itself is punchy and responsive, and the S-AWC system works incredibly well on dirt and snow-covered roads. In terms of fuel efficiency, I've been blown away by how much better it is than the EPA ratings. On my most recent long highway trip, I got 34 mpg, which is even better than the dash indicator suggested. If I had to nitpick, my only complaints would be that the factory tires are mediocre (although replacing them with Continentals made a huge difference), and the gloss black plastic inside the cabin scratches easily. However, these are minor issues that don't detract from the overall experience. I was initially hesitant to test drive this vehicle due to the factory MPG ratings, but I'm so glad I did. It's a real contender against the RAV4 and CR-V, which we also considered. Even after several years of use, it continues to perform flawlessly. The only thing to note is that it can struggle a bit at high highway speeds, but using premium fuel seems to help with this and also improves fuel efficiency. For around town, regular 87 fuel is perfectly fine.Last fall, we had the opportunity to tow our friend's powerboat out of a lake on a gravel boat launch. Despite the vehicle weighing near the 2000 lb towing limit, it performed the duty with ease. We did have the 4WD system in gravel mode, which helped compared to leaving it in normal. I'm much more confident now in the event we get our own boat in the future. At the moment, our average mpg is 27.8, which seems fine after this past winter with all the snow and cold. I was still able to get 30 mpg on the highway, but I'm looking forward to getting up to near mid 30's as the weather warms and improves. I can't recommend this vehicle enough and look forward to it lasting us into the future.

  3. Tanner Parker 2025-06-26

I purchased a 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 6 weeks ago. I absolutely love driving it to work, even though it takes me anywhere between 45 to 55 minutes each way. The way it handles the occasional Spring snow is impressive. The interior is my favorite part because it looks clean and symmetrical, which is very pleasing to the eye. The outside is also a definite plus, with its modern look and the white diamond paint that sometimes looks light gray in different lighting. Overall, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase!

  4. Gus Roberts 2025-04-15

I am absolutely loving my new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL AWD! I purchased it just five days ago and I am already so impressed with its reliability and ease of maneuverability. I have seen some negative comments online, but I have to say that I completely disagree. In fact, I think that Mitsubishi's technology is actually better than Nissan's, especially now that they have partnered together. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and I am excited to continue doing business with Mitsubishi in the future.

  5. Earnest Kling 2025-04-01

The interior is simple, but still nice. I really love it, and the amount of power for a 4 cylinder is impressive. However, the ride can be a bit rough, especially when hitting bumps. Overall, it's a good vehicle.
