Mercury Sable problems
The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.
Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.
Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

- Summary: On April 12 I exited my drive onto the 55 mph highway in front of my house when suddenly the car began to shudder. I jammed the gas to get up to speed to prevent oncoming cars from hitting me which made the problem much worse. It was violently shuddering and wouldn’t accelerate. I took my foot off the gas which stopped the shaking. I gassed it slowly and I could accelerate to speed much slower than I would have liked. It wasn’t smooth. One half mile later it suddenly and violently began again. Taking my foot off the gas it smoothed out and I could accelerate again. I changed plans and went to the service garage to see what the problem was. It seems the problem is a known issue that hasn’t been addressed. I’m glad there were no cars coming from the opposite direction which could have impacted the drivers side while I was floundering out of my drive. I will enclose the garages assessment.

- Summary: Purchased vehicle from a private seller 10 days prior to incident. Seller informed me they had replaced throttle body sensor to fix unintended acceleration issues. Drove vehicle home on 4/10/22 with one incident on highway where I attempted to slow vehicle after reaching approx 70mph, and vehicle seemed to jolt/shudder as if unable to brake smoothly. Did not drive again til 4/18/22: I attempted to drive vehicle to tire shop to have new tires installed. After backing out of driveway, I accelerated quickly to approx. 25mph. Acceleration continued past 25mph despite me letting off the gas pedal. I hit the brakes and felt the acceleration continuing to push against them, causing the car to jolt/shake with the application of the brakes. I slowed to a stop at a nearby traffic light, where the engine continued to rev at approx. 2000rpm. When I let off the brakes and drove through the intersection, the car continued to accelerate to around 30-35mph without me pressing the gas pedal at all. I again applied the brakes to regain control of the vehicle, and it again jolted against them as the engine continued to rev excessively. After the next light, I pulled over and placed the car in park. Here, engine stopped revving high, and when I put it in drive again, the issue had ceased. Reading up on complains, have found dozens of similar driver issues with uncontrollable acceleration on similar model-year Mercury Sables and Ford Tauruses, with no clear solution to the issue to allow me to safely drive this vehicle with my child inside. My and my child's safety is placed at risk with increased chance of brake failure, without recourse from manufacturer or NHTSA, who've concluded their investigation despite frequent complaints. Problem has not yet been confirmed by dealer/ISC. Vehicle has not been inspected. No check engine lights or other warning of issue from vehicle. At no point was gas pedal physically stuck in the acceleration position. Issue is known to NHTSA, but not resolved.

The contact stated their daughter was driving at 55 mph, when the driver was approaching an intersection at a red light the driver depressed on the brake pedal and the brake pedal went straight to the floor and the vehicle could not stop causing the vehicle to hit the vehicle in front of them in the rear. SOMETIME BACK I STARTED TO NOTICE THAT IT SEEMED TO GET HOTTER ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SEAT AND ON THE RIGHT, AND THE LAST FEW WEEKS IT INTENSIFIED, WITH THE LEFT SIDE GETTING TOO HOT VERY QUICKLY SO I WOULD SIMPLY TURN THE SEAT OFF. THEN SEVERAL DAYS AGO I WAS DRIVING WITH THE SEAT ON AND WITHIN LESS THAN TWO MINUTES THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SEAT FELT SO HOT THAT I IMMEDIATELY TURNED IT OFF BECAUSE I FELT LIKE IT WAS BURNING ME. IT STILL WAS SO HOT THAT I HAD TO PULL THE CAR OVER AND GET OUT JUST TO GET OFF THE SEAT. THAT IS WHEN I SAW THAT THE HEATING ELEMENT ON THE LEFT SIDE HAD BURNED RIGHT THROUGH THE LEATHER. The driver frontal air bag may improperly inflate during second-stage deployment in the event of a high speed crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
- Consequence: An improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

I recently purchased a brand new car after owning a Ford Taurus 98 model. I really enjoyed my experience with the Ford and Mercury dealerships in our city. When I was looking for a new car, I checked out some VWs (Passat, Jetta) and Volvos, but found them to be too expensive. Ultimately, I decided to go with another Ford because of the promotion rebates in Summer 03. I found the Sable to be a great option - similar to the other cars I was considering, but at a better price and even better value!

At almost 70,000 miles, this car has never needed any major repairs. The LS trim gives it a sleek look and it's much faster than comparable models. Don't hesitate to buy a Sable! However, it's important to note that the transmissions are not designed for towing, so avoid purchasing one with a trailer hitch. Also, it's best to stay away from the 3.8 Liter motor due to head gasket problems. I opted for leather seats, a sunroof, and climate control, and saved thousands compared to a compatible Toyota Camry. Why pay more when you can get all of these features for less?

A friend recently inherited another vehicle from a family member and kindly gave me his 1990 Sable. This car has quite the history, having been passed down through our mutual friends and even used by someone who attended Bible College in Chicago. It's almost like a congregational heirloom! Despite only having the car for a week, I already prefer it over my 03 Taurus. The ride is smooth and luxurious, and the engine runs like new. While the transmission needs some attention, I plan to take care of it soon. The paint job is a bit worn, but I'm hopeful that I can fix it up next year, assuming the car makes it through the harsh Iowa winter weather.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that the engine of this vehicle is still running strong even after almost 200,000 miles! However, I have noticed that some of the other parts may need a bit of attention. For example, I've had to replace the CVs, inner and outer tie rods, ball joints, and rear shocks. Additionally, the rear passenger door hinge is broken and there's a bad 02 sensor. But don't worry, with a little bit of maintenance, this car can still be a reliable ride for years to come!

At 72000 miles, my car developed a knock and Ford informed me that it requires a new engine. Despite my conservative driving and regular oil changes as required, this issue arose. In contrast, my previous cars have exceeded 100,000 miles and 10 years. Unfortunately, the head gasket blew at 52,000 miles, which is the same issue Jim22 faced, and Ford refused to provide any coverage under warranty. As a result, I have lost faith in Ford and will not be purchasing from them again. It is disappointing and frustrating to see such irresponsible actions and a lack of accountability for their mistakes.

After the transmission gave out at just 100,000 miles and the head gasket blew for the THIRD TIME, I'm feeling quite frustrated. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a buyer for it, and I wouldn't want to sell it in this condition anyway. At the moment, it's best to let it sit in the barn for the dogs to sleep in. I would advise you to stay away from it for now.
