Mercury Sable problems
The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.
Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.
Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

- Summary: On April 12 I exited my drive onto the 55 mph highway in front of my house when suddenly the car began to shudder. I jammed the gas to get up to speed to prevent oncoming cars from hitting me which made the problem much worse. It was violently shuddering and wouldn’t accelerate. I took my foot off the gas which stopped the shaking. I gassed it slowly and I could accelerate to speed much slower than I would have liked. It wasn’t smooth. One half mile later it suddenly and violently began again. Taking my foot off the gas it smoothed out and I could accelerate again. I changed plans and went to the service garage to see what the problem was. It seems the problem is a known issue that hasn’t been addressed. I’m glad there were no cars coming from the opposite direction which could have impacted the drivers side while I was floundering out of my drive. I will enclose the garages assessment.

- Summary: Purchased vehicle from a private seller 10 days prior to incident. Seller informed me they had replaced throttle body sensor to fix unintended acceleration issues. Drove vehicle home on 4/10/22 with one incident on highway where I attempted to slow vehicle after reaching approx 70mph, and vehicle seemed to jolt/shudder as if unable to brake smoothly. Did not drive again til 4/18/22: I attempted to drive vehicle to tire shop to have new tires installed. After backing out of driveway, I accelerated quickly to approx. 25mph. Acceleration continued past 25mph despite me letting off the gas pedal. I hit the brakes and felt the acceleration continuing to push against them, causing the car to jolt/shake with the application of the brakes. I slowed to a stop at a nearby traffic light, where the engine continued to rev at approx. 2000rpm. When I let off the brakes and drove through the intersection, the car continued to accelerate to around 30-35mph without me pressing the gas pedal at all. I again applied the brakes to regain control of the vehicle, and it again jolted against them as the engine continued to rev excessively. After the next light, I pulled over and placed the car in park. Here, engine stopped revving high, and when I put it in drive again, the issue had ceased. Reading up on complains, have found dozens of similar driver issues with uncontrollable acceleration on similar model-year Mercury Sables and Ford Tauruses, with no clear solution to the issue to allow me to safely drive this vehicle with my child inside. My and my child's safety is placed at risk with increased chance of brake failure, without recourse from manufacturer or NHTSA, who've concluded their investigation despite frequent complaints. Problem has not yet been confirmed by dealer/ISC. Vehicle has not been inspected. No check engine lights or other warning of issue from vehicle. At no point was gas pedal physically stuck in the acceleration position. Issue is known to NHTSA, but not resolved.

The contact stated their daughter was driving at 55 mph, when the driver was approaching an intersection at a red light the driver depressed on the brake pedal and the brake pedal went straight to the floor and the vehicle could not stop causing the vehicle to hit the vehicle in front of them in the rear. SOMETIME BACK I STARTED TO NOTICE THAT IT SEEMED TO GET HOTTER ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SEAT AND ON THE RIGHT, AND THE LAST FEW WEEKS IT INTENSIFIED, WITH THE LEFT SIDE GETTING TOO HOT VERY QUICKLY SO I WOULD SIMPLY TURN THE SEAT OFF. THEN SEVERAL DAYS AGO I WAS DRIVING WITH THE SEAT ON AND WITHIN LESS THAN TWO MINUTES THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SEAT FELT SO HOT THAT I IMMEDIATELY TURNED IT OFF BECAUSE I FELT LIKE IT WAS BURNING ME. IT STILL WAS SO HOT THAT I HAD TO PULL THE CAR OVER AND GET OUT JUST TO GET OFF THE SEAT. THAT IS WHEN I SAW THAT THE HEATING ELEMENT ON THE LEFT SIDE HAD BURNED RIGHT THROUGH THE LEATHER. The driver frontal air bag may improperly inflate during second-stage deployment in the event of a high speed crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
- Consequence: An improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. When I was looking for a car, I needed something reliable and Pat Goss from Auto Week recommended the drivetrain of this car, and I can see why! Even though it's had 5 owners before me, it starts up strong every time. While I would have preferred the LS with 200hp, I've found that switching to a K&N air filter and using 93 octane fuel gets me pretty close. In fact, I feel like I get better performance because the power is more evenly distributed throughout the RPM range. The peak torque starts at 2500 rpm, so even with just a little pressure on the gas, it moves really well. For handling, all I had to do was switch to lower profile tires, and now it can out corner BMWs!

Very pleased with my base model Sable..However the auto I purchased did come with the interior convenience package, Sat. radio, mud flaps, and electric front seats. Very, very quiet, handle well, and rides great.. The transmission is very smooth and the engine is impressive. The fit and finish is extremely good. I feel it was the best car for the money in my price range. I also considered the Avalon, Fusion, Milan, and Tarus. I've had a lot of experience with the Tarus (Sable's twin) with my job and have never had any problems with it. One had over 135000 miles on it. The last time I checked milage was 30.5 with well over half of those miles in city driving.

Your 2008 Mercury Sable sounds fantastic! It handles great and the ride quality is superb, quiet and smooth. You have plenty of head and legroom, as well as a great view of the road. The interior quality is superb and the fit and finish of the exterior is very nice. I love the sleek front design and the clear ailamp covers. The performance of the 3.5L V6 is great, it moves this heavy sedan with no problems and the 6-speed shifts smoothly. The beautiful exterior color, Dark Ink Blue, looks awesome and the black leather with white stitching is first class. I am so happy to hear that you are enjoying your new Sable! I highly suggest that others go check one out too. It's really great to see that Mercury has finally got a lineup that will get young buyers into the showrooms, myself included. 10 years ago, I never would have thought I would own a Mercury at 27 years old.

This car is great! It drives really nicely and is super safe in the winter. Plus, if you hit the brakes really hard on ice, the car automatically turns off to keep you even safer.

This car was given to me with 60xxx miles on it by my folks who bought it new. I absolutely love this car! The only issue we ever had was with the coil springs, but it has been incredibly reliable overall. Recently, I gave it to my friend's daughter and it now has over 300XXX miles on it, yet it still runs like new. This car has been perfect for me and I would definitely recommend it to anyone!

Your car has been working flawlessly with nothing but regular maintenance to date. The original set of tires were replaced at 58k miles. While power accelerating, the automatic transmission could shift a bit smoother from low to high gear. Despite its appearance, the car is very comfortable to drive.

I purchased this car with 80,000 miles on it, and unfortunately experienced some issues shortly after. However, thanks to the 30-day warranty, I was able to address the transmission issue. Despite some subsequent problems with the heater blower, AC wiring, and burnt-out coils, I have invested $4,000 in repairs and am confident that this car will soon be running smoothly. While the driver's side window has been a persistent issue, I have taken steps to address it and remain optimistic about the car's overall performance.

I bought my Sable back in '04 with around 75,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on during the first week of ownership and I had to replace the oxygen sensors. In the first year, I experienced a punctured rear tire due to a broken back spring while driving. Although there was a recall for the front springs, there was no reimbursement for the back. Recently, I've had to replace the alternator, entire engine, and now the transmission is leaking fluid. Similarly, my dad had to replace the engine in his Mercury Grand Marquis around the 140,000 mark. Additionally, the back suspension has always been creaking, which can be concerning when there are passengers in the car. Despite these issues, I still appreciate my Sable and the memories it has helped me create.

Over the years, I invested in repairs that amounted to $1,000 - 1,500 annually. Unfortunately, the car recently experienced a blown head gasket, and I made the decision to sell it for junk.

I purchased this car with only 35k miles on it. The previous owner, an elderly lady, did not drive it much, hence the low mileage. I thought it would be a great second car to drive to work, but unfortunately, it has had numerous issues since the day of purchase. I had to get a complete new brake job, including caliper, pads, and rotors. The coil spring broke and ruptured a new tire. The engine started leaking oil and blowing anti-freeze out of the recovery tank. I found a leaking oil seal and a blown head gasket. The transmission has a shudder when shifting either up or down, which my mechanic says is a common problem with that make of transmission. The heater core has to be flushed almost bi-weekly in order to have any heat in the winter time. It seems those intelligent engineers designed a by-pass hose that allows rust and sediment to gather in the heater core, which then gets stopped up and coolant will not circulate through the heater core. To correct this issue, it will cost $500. I paid $3500 for the car and have now spent in excess of $2500 in repair bills. Now, I have over $6000 in a car that books for $2500. I have to go now. I hope the phone call is from the GM dealer.
