The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.

Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.

Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

  • VIN: 1MEHM43W08G
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: On April 12 I exited my drive onto the 55 mph highway in front of my house when suddenly the car began to shudder. I jammed the gas to get up to speed to prevent oncoming cars from hitting me which made the problem much worse. It was violently shuddering and wouldn’t accelerate. I took my foot off the gas which stopped the shaking. I gassed it slowly and I could accelerate to speed much slower than I would have liked. It wasn’t smooth. One half mile later it suddenly and violently began again. Taking my foot off the gas it smoothed out and I could accelerate again. I changed plans and went to the service garage to see what the problem was. It seems the problem is a known issue that hasn’t been addressed. I’m glad there were no cars coming from the opposite direction which could have impacted the drivers side while I was floundering out of my drive. I will enclose the garages assessment.

Mercury Sable 2005
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-18
  • Date Complaint: 2022-04-19
  • VIN: 1MEFM55S75A
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Purchased vehicle from a private seller 10 days prior to incident. Seller informed me they had replaced throttle body sensor to fix unintended acceleration issues. Drove vehicle home on 4/10/22 with one incident on highway where I attempted to slow vehicle after reaching approx 70mph, and vehicle seemed to jolt/shudder as if unable to brake smoothly. Did not drive again til 4/18/22: I attempted to drive vehicle to tire shop to have new tires installed. After backing out of driveway, I accelerated quickly to approx. 25mph. Acceleration continued past 25mph despite me letting off the gas pedal. I hit the brakes and felt the acceleration continuing to push against them, causing the car to jolt/shake with the application of the brakes. I slowed to a stop at a nearby traffic light, where the engine continued to rev at approx. 2000rpm. When I let off the brakes and drove through the intersection, the car continued to accelerate to around 30-35mph without me pressing the gas pedal at all. I again applied the brakes to regain control of the vehicle, and it again jolted against them as the engine continued to rev excessively. After the next light, I pulled over and placed the car in park. Here, engine stopped revving high, and when I put it in drive again, the issue had ceased. Reading up on complains, have found dozens of similar driver issues with uncontrollable acceleration on similar model-year Mercury Sables and Ford Tauruses, with no clear solution to the issue to allow me to safely drive this vehicle with my child inside. My and my child's safety is placed at risk with increased chance of brake failure, without recourse from manufacturer or NHTSA, who've concluded their investigation despite frequent complaints. Problem has not yet been confirmed by dealer/ISC. Vehicle has not been inspected. No check engine lights or other warning of issue from vehicle. At no point was gas pedal physically stuck in the acceleration position. Issue is known to NHTSA, but not resolved.

I’ve cleaned the throttle body and the idle air control valve and still the same issue. The car only has 113,000 miles on it but now I’m too scared to even drive it!

THEN SEVERAL DAYS AGO I WAS DRIVING WITH THE SEAT ON AND WITHIN LESS THAN TWO MINUTES THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SEAT FELT SO HOT THAT I IMMEDIATELY TURNED IT OFF BECAUSE I FELT LIKE IT WAS BURNING ME. IT STILL WAS SO HOT THAT I HAD TO PULL THE CAR OVER AND GET OUT JUST TO GET OFF THE SEAT. THAT IS WHEN I SAW THAT THE HEATING ELEMENT ON THE LEFT SIDE HAD BURNED RIGHT THROUGH THE LEATHER. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY HAZARD, BOTH FOR BODILY INJURY AND FOR A CAR FIRE. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL.

I recently bought a 98 GS with 50,000 miles on it for a great price. I've put 5,000 miles on it in just half a year and I have not been disappointed. Although I had to settle for this instead of an SHO, it's been performing well. After some practice, I've found that the transmission is fine as long as it's driven smoothly. Sudden acceleration can cause some issues, but the Duratec engine is fantastic. I'm excited to see the Duratec engine in a more stylish vehicle like the new Mazda 6, which incorporates valve timing similar to Honda's VTEC. Overall, I absolutely love my car!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I actually bought it from my grandmother back in '01 when it only had 41k miles on it. Overall, it's been a great riding car with good pickup. While I did have some transmission issues early on, I've never had to replace it. The engine still runs well at 122k miles, but I do notice a burnt oil smell after about 15 minutes of driving. However, I change the oil religiously every 3k miles. One annoying problem I've had is with the driver's side door latch loosening and having to be re-tightened often. I did have to replace the radiator at 110k miles, but overall it's been a really good car!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. It's been a bit of a challenge driving the 35 miles to work every day, but I'm grateful to have it. Of course, like any car, it's had its fair share of issues. I've had to replace the struts and do some motor work, and even had trouble with the trunk latch and cassette player. Unfortunately, the air conditioning compressor pump froze up after only 3 months of use, and there's an expensive oil leak that requires pulling the motor to repair. Despite these setbacks, I still manage to get a decent 27 miles per gallon. Overall, it may not be perfect, but I'm thankful for my trusty car.

The car appeared to be good based on the known specs at the time of purchase, but after a few years, it started to show some issues. In my opinion, the support from Ford Motor is not up to the mark. However, I had some protection as I bought the extended warranty. It is worth noting that some other owners have also reported similar issues. For instance, the A/C tends to go up after 2-3 years, and the door seals may leak, requiring replacement. Additionally, the car does not burn E85 fuel as listed by Ford, and it may run rough and choke on mixed fuel. Unfortunately, I now need spark plug wires after just 41,500 miles.

I've had this car for 100,000 miles throughout my high school and college days. Although it was towed 3 times, went through 4 starters, 2 fuel pumps, and left me stranded twice, I still think it's a good car. The power is great, with good pickup, and there's plenty of room on the inside. However, I wouldn't recommend buying this vehicle if it has over 100,000 miles.

I purchased my car six years ago with 28,716 miles on it. Since then, it has accumulated 195,000 miles. While the transmission can be difficult to shift when parked on a slope, it has held up well over time. The engine has been solid and has not caused any problems whatsoever. The wipers occasionally turn on by themselves, but this is a minor issue. For the past two years, I have experienced problems with the fan not blowing heat when on high, which may be due to crud in the lines. It can be challenging to fit larger items through the trunk opening, and folding mirrors would be a nice addition. The car has had some issues with failed parts, but they have never occurred all at once and have only cost a few hundred dollars to repair. I have found good auto repair shops, parts stores, and junkyards to help keep my car running smoothly.

I am confident in the quality of this car. Although I experienced a rough idling issue due to a burnt valve, I am pleased to report that it is covered under the factory warranty. The dealership has informed me that the repair will take another week, but I trust that they will handle it with the utmost care and expertise. While this issue was unexpected, I remain satisfied with my overall experience with the car and the dealership. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This car was the first car I have ever owned. My great grandma bought it used, previously being a rental car in '96. When she gave it to me in 2007, it had 75k miles on it and no problems. After getting it, I have only had to do mainly maintenance items on it such as tires and fluid changes. The build of the car makes it easy to replace anything in the car and the parts tend to be cheap and affordable. A few months ago, I was in an accident where my poor car was totaled, but she is still a trooper and I still drive her. I highly recommend this car as it is highly dependable for its age. I am about to give the car to my sister as her first car and I hope that it will still be as dependable as it was for me.

Hey there! I'm not entirely sure about the reliability, but I feel like I got a whole lot of car for my money. If I had gone for the same options with an Accord or Camry, it would have cost me $8,000 more. My only concern is resale value, so I hope the reliability is high. Also, the acceleration lags a little at first.

The car was generally reliable, but unfortunately had some issues when turning right. There was always a loud rusty noise and popping sound, which I was told was due to the rotor being welded to something. Additionally, the front passenger tire had a tendency to blow out and require replacement.
