Mercury Sable 1992 problems

mercury logo

The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.

Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.

Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
  • Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
  • Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.

DURING HIGH WINDS, HEAVY, BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW, AND LOW TEMPERATURES, THE ENGINE COOLING FAN CAN BECOME BLOCKED OR FROZEN WITH SNOW. THE FAN MOTOR MAY NOT ROTATE AND COULD OVERHEAT.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE SMOKE OR FLAMES FROM THE FAN AND/OR SHROUD, THE FAN ELECTRICAL WIRING, OR THE FAN MOTOR RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ELECTRICAL JUMPER HARNESS CONTAINING AN AUTOMATIC RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE FAN MOTOR LOW SPEED CIRCUITRY FROM OVERHEATING.

Negative Mercury Sable 1992 car reviews

  1. Don Paucek 2024-10-06

Please let me know the value of my car. Despite the transmission issue, it has been a reliable form of transportation and runs well.

  2. Albert Howe 2024-08-07

This car has been a complete disappointment. Despite following the owner's manual for maintenance, the engine required replacement at 62,000 miles, followed by two more transmission replacements at 68,000 and 78,000 miles. The brakes wore out after only 20,000 miles, and the A/C stopped working at 70,000 miles. Unfortunately, the car spent a lot of time in the shop, resulting in low mileage.

  3. Jadon Anderson 2024-07-27

The engine was replaced at 62k and again at 120k. At the same time, the transmission was also replaced. Currently, at 140k with a rebuilt engine, the transmission needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, Ford denied responsibility for these issues. Additionally, the AC went out at 50k. We understand your frustration and apologize for any inconvenience caused. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you further.

  4. Bernardo Weissnat 2024-07-17

The 3.8 L engine in this car unfortunately experienced a head gasket failure at 62000 miles. While Ford has acknowledged this issue in later models (1994 & 95), they have yet to do so for earlier models. Despite documented cases of head gasket failure, it is important to note that purchasing a used Ford product from the early to mid-nineties with this engine may come with some risks.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. Back in 2003, I purchased it as a work car for my Marine Fiberglass job. I was looking for an alternative to a Chrysler Minivan and this car caught my eye. Although it doesn't have as much room as the minivan, it gets better mileage and doesn't look like a soccer car, which is a plus! When I bought it, the car had 85k on it and it still had ALL of its original parts, including the 3.0 litre engine. I'm happy to report that the engine has been very dependable, with only a water pump and the bearing on the A/C going bad. The only issues I've had are with the transmission (which now needs to be repaired) and the brakes (two sets of rear rotors and one set of new calipers). Overall, it's been a great car and I'm glad I made the purchase!

Positive Mercury Sable 1992 car reviews

  1. Ottis Lueilwitz 2024-11-10

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my '92 Sable GS. It has the 3.8 Liter engine and has been with me for 90,000 miles with the original head gasket. With proper maintenance, this car can last up to 200,000 miles! It was previously owned by an old lady and an old man who took great care of it for the last 15 years. Recently, I had to replace the hoses and brakes due to age issues, but other than that, it's been a reliable car. The trunk is huge and came in handy when I moved earlier this summer. I know this car has received some negative reviews, but I can't relate to them at all. I believe that if you take good care of this car, it will last you a long time. Thank you for reading!

  2. Winston Marquardt 2024-10-05

I purchased my car brand new at the end of 1991. Unfortunately, I have had several repairs, both big and small, right from the very beginning, which has cost me a lot of money. Despite taking excellent care of the car and keeping it garaged, I have received very little cooperation from FORD and my complaints were disregarded. After speaking with other owners of the same 1992 model, I discovered that about 7 out of 10 had similar problems. Even the manager of the Ford dealership told me that his father has the same car and it is a LEMON. Recently, I accidentally broke the glass of the front mirror and was quoted $400.00 for a replacement. I am grateful to have found this site to vent my frustration. I have been driving for over 50 years, always using American cars, but I am considering a different brand for my next car.

  3. Santiago Franecki 2024-09-01

Smooth and crisp response, the Mercury Sable is the car for you. Like lemonade on a hot, sunny day, you'll enjoy the cool pleasure of running your fingers over the dash and feeling refreshed. If you're looking for a newer car, we have plenty of options available that might suit your needs. Let us know how we can help you find the perfect car!

  4. Olin Dach 2024-06-27

In the 10 years you've had this Sable (3.0 L engine), it has been very reliable and needed very few repairs (just a new radiator and ignition switch, besides the normal brakes, oil changes, etc.). It runs very smoothly and is a pleasure to drive.

This has been a great car - very comfortable with good gas mileage and great control. I got the 3.8L which is a must-have. However, the only issue I've had with this car is overheating, which can be very frustrating!
