The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.

Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.

Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • VIN: 1MEFM50U7XA
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: THE BRAKES ON THE 1999 MERCURY SABLE THAT I PURCHASED 4 YEARS AGO HAVE BEEN REPAIRED AND/OR REPLACED 4 TIMES! NOW THEY ARE GOING OUT AGAIN. I HAVE HAD THE ROTORS TURNED, AND EVERY OTHER THING THAT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED. WHEN I ASKED THE LAST MECHANIC WHY MY BRAKES KEEP GOING OUT, HE STATED THAT THIS SIZE OF FORD WAS NOT SUPPLIED WITH AN APPROPRIATE BRAKE FOR THE SIZE OF CAR. I ASKED WHAT COULD BE DONE TO REMEDY THE SITUATION, AND WAS INFORMED THAT I WOULD HAVE TO KEEP REPLACING THE BRAKES. I THINK THIS IS A HORRIBLE ANSWER. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT FORD WILL DO FOR ME. I LIVE IN OREGON AND AM SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS, BUT I DON'T DARE GO OVER ANY OF THE MOUNTAIN RANGES BECAUSE GOING DOWNHILL AND APPLYING THE BRAKES MAKES THE ENTIRE CAR SHIMMY AND IT FEELS LIKE I WILL LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR AND THAT IT WON'T STOP. I HAVE TO MAKE WEEKLY TRIPS OVER THE MOUNTAINS, SO I ALWAYS RENT A CAR. THIS IS GETTING TO BE TOO EXPENSIVE. I OWN MY CAR FREE AND CLEAR AND WOULD LIKE THE BRAKES TO STAY FIXED ONCE I GET THEM FIXED BEFORE THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. *TR

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SEAT BELT RETRACTOR MAY HAVE A PIN SHAFT IN THE SWITCHABLE ELR/ALR MECHANISM THAT IS INCORRECTLY FORMED. IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES, THE SWITCHING MECHANISM COULD BECOME NONFUNCTIONAL, PREVENTING THE SEAT BELT WEBBING FROM BEING EXTRACTED FROM THE RETRACTOR. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE THAT MALFUNCTION OF THE MECHANISM COULD PREVENT THE BELT FROM BEING SWITCHED INTO THE ALR MODE. THE ELR MECHANISM IS NOT AFFECTED BY THIS CONDITION.
  • Consequence: IF THE MECHANISM MALFUNCTIONS AND DOES NOT ALLOW THE WEBBING TO BE EXTRACTED, THE LAP AND SHOULDER BELT COULD NOT BE WORN BY A VEHICLE OCCUPANT. IN THE EVENT THAT THE MECHANISM DOES NOT ALLOW THE ALR MODE TO BE ENGAGED, THE OPERATOR MAY BE UNABLE TO PROPERLY INSTALL A CHILD SEAT IN THAT SEATING POSITION.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE LAP AND SHOULDER BELT ASSEMBLIES. ASSEMBLIES WITH JULIAN DATE CODES OF 200 THROUGH 223 ARE SUSPECT AND WILL BE REPLACED.

  • Consequence: IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS, THE ENGINE MAY NOT FULLY RETURN TO IDLE. ALSO, THE INSULATOR MAY NOT STAY IN THE INTENDED LOCATION AND COULD INTERFERE WITH THE ACCELERATOR CABLE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THESE VEHICLES TO ENSURE PROPER INSTALLATION OF THE ACCELERATOR CABLE CLIP, AND RE-INSTALL IF NEEDED.
1998-08-25
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH MANUAL SEAT TRACKS. THE FRONT SEAT BELT BUCKLE ATTACHING STUD MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY HEAT TREATED. THIS HEAT TREATMENT MAY HAVE RESULTED IN CRACKS DEVELOPING IN THE STUD.
  • Consequence: IF THE STUD IS CRACKED, IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH, THE OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE MOUNTING BRACKET AND STUD ASSEMBLY.

Although it has been a good car overall, it seems that Ford needs to take the time to redesign their transmissions. Unfortunately, I am now about to put the third transmission into this car, which has cost me around three thousand dollars each time. I have put more money into it than I have paid off. One transmission lasted 108,000 miles, and the other died at 181,000. I have had a lot of trouble with the car, but by far the most serious issue has been the transmission. If you talk to any Ford dealer mechanic, they will tell you that it is a common problem. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

You've had to replace/return the front brake rotors three times in the first 75000 miles, and you also had to replace the front steering rack and power steering pump at 65000 miles. Unfortunately, the car doesn't get great fuel economy in town, only 12-18 MPG, but it does get 28 MPG on the highway. You plan to keep this car until a catastrophic failure occurs.

It's no wonder rental car companies choose to buy these cars. I absolutely loved driving it from Orlando to New York, even with 19,000 miles on it. However, after passing the 25,000 mile mark, some minor wear and tear started to show, such as engine rattling. By the time it reached 30,000 miles, the brakes were bad and I had to bring it in for repairs multiple times, even up until the 40,000 mile mark. In fact, I had to replace the brakes 20 times (no kidding)! The guy at the dealership even advised me to sell it before any serious trouble occurred, as he believed all the cars were junk. At 43,500 miles, the engine started revving to 5000 RPMS when shifting from first to second gear. Eventually, I decided to trade it in for a Hyundai Sonata, even though I must admit that the Sable was very comfortable.

I love my car! It was originally my mom's, but she passed it down to me. It's been through a lot, but the engine is still going strong. The transmission can be a bit finicky at times, but overall it's a reliable ride. I've put 147,000 miles on it and have only had to replace a few wear parts and the speed sensor at 145,000 miles. It gets about 20-24 mpg in the city and on the highway, but it's a great cruiser for those long road trips!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the vehicle I purchased from Carmax. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the shop three times in the past two years due to some transmission problems. I'm not sure if this is typical of a Sable or if it's just an issue with my car. Additionally, I've noticed that the gas gauge has never worked correctly. Have you experienced anything similar?

I bought the car with 51,000 miles on it and it now has 116,500 miles. Over the years, I have replaced the power steering pump and front wheel bearings at 105,000 miles. Currently, I am experiencing some trouble with the heater and suspect that the heater core may be plugged. Additionally, it requires an exhaust manifold gasket. Other than these issues, I have only had to perform regular maintenance such as brakes and battery replacements. Overall, it has been a great car with a stylish design, decent ride and handling, good performance, and excellent fuel efficiency. I have no major complaints.

I purchased my car six years ago with 28,716 miles on it. Since then, it has accumulated 195,000 miles. While the transmission can be difficult to shift when parked on a slope, it has held up well over time. The engine has been solid and has not caused any problems whatsoever. The wipers occasionally turn on by themselves, but this is a minor issue. For the past two years, I have experienced problems with the fan not blowing heat when on high, which may be due to crud in the lines. It can be challenging to fit larger items through the trunk opening, and folding mirrors would be a nice addition. The car has had some issues with failed parts, but they have never occurred all at once and have only cost a few hundred dollars to repair. I have found good auto repair shops, parts stores, and junkyards to help keep my car running smoothly.

I usually drive about 300 miles a day, and with the Sable, I never get bored. It has great performance, makes me feel safe, is comfortable, and reliable. I drove 2000 miles to North Carolina and back, and it handled the journey beautifully. I absolutely love my car, and with oil changes every 5,000 miles instead of 3,000, I never have to worry about breaking down on the side of the road!

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you purchased the car used with 50K and now it has 85K. It's great to hear that it has a 24 valve DOHC engine which is preferable and peppy. From what you've shared, it seems to get low-mid 20 mph in commuter driving and mid-high 20 mph on road trips, with the best mph being 29 and the worst being 20. The drive train and suspension are good, and it rides well on all road surfaces and at all speeds. Although there is some moderate road noise, the body is tight. The only issue you've had is with the rebuilt front disc brakes, which seems to be more of a parts supplier/mechanic issue than a car issue. Overall, it sounds like a great handling and fun to drive car. You initially bought it for commuting, but it's great to hear that it's also a good over the road car. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

The first car I bought was brand new, right after I graduated from college. I was very impressed that I could afford leather seats and a moon roof for just $23,000, which included tax, title, and license fees. To top it off, I got 0.9% financing! I test drove a Pontiac Grand Prix, but I couldn't see out of it. The Sable, on the other hand, is a great buy for what you get. It's good on tires - I got 65,000 miles out of the first set - and the original brakes lasted just as long. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a good used car, as long as the original owner took good care of it.
