1998 Mercury Sable problems
The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.
Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.
Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

I CALLED FORD CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND WOULDN'T INVEST THEIR MONEY INTO REPAIRING MY CAR. FORTUNATE FOR ME THE INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. IF IT WERE ON THE HIGHWAY, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A CATASTROPHE. SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-11-08
- VIN: 4M2ZU54E3WU
- Components: SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: AFTER ONLY OWNING MY VEHICLE FOR 8 MONTHS, AND BEING TOLD IT WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION, IN A MATTER OF 3 DAYS, MANY PROBLEMS OCCURRED. MY 4WD LIGHTS BEGAN FLASHING, ALONG WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. WHEN ACCELERATING UPHILL, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE RAISES TO HIGH IN A MATTER OF SECONDS AND THE CHECK GAUGE LIGHT COMES ON. THE CAR BEGAN DYING, THE IDLE DROPPING AT SLOW SPEEDS, AND EVEN DIED IN MID DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, LEAVING ME TO VEER TOWARDS THE EDGE OF THE ROAD WITH NO POWER STEERING. I TOOK THE CAR TO A DEALERSHIP, THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HONOR MY EXTENDED WARRANTY, I PAID $1200 FOR. MY ESTIMATE CAME UP TO ALMOST $3000 WITH THE WARRANTY ONLY OPTING TO COVER $ 300. THE PROBLEMS AS DESCRIBED BY THE MECHANIC WERE: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR: $680, SLACK IN BOTH LOWER BALL JOINTS (NEED REPLACING): $625, ELECTRICAL AND RELATED REPAIRS: $ 215, SENSOR FOR FRONT AND REAR INTERNAL FAILURE $ 700, T/CASE MOTOR $725. I COME TO FIND OUT THAT THE 4WD ON MY VEHICLE PURCHASED ONLY FOR THAT REASON WITH WINTER COMING DOESN'T EVEN WORK, THE WHOLE THING NEEDS REBUILT. I'VE NEVER EVEN USED IT. I PAID ALL I COULD $900, AND GOT THE CAR BACK JUST TO HAVE IT RESPONDING THE SAME WAY, VIRTUALLY UN-DRIVABLE. AFTER VIEWING SEVERAL WEBSITES, THE FORD/MERCURY WEBSITE LISTED NO RECALLS AND COMPLAINTS FOR MY VEHICLE, BUT ALLDATA.COM LISTED THE THROTTLE POSITION, AND THE SAME 4WD PROBLEMS I'M HAVING; PLUS MINOR ONES I FAILED TO MENTION TO THE MECHANIC, SUCH AS THE REAR SEAT POSITIONING WILL NOT RECLINE, WHISTLING FROM THE WHEEL WELL ETC... I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN MY FINDINGS, AND FIND MY SELF IN QUESTION AS TO KEEP THE PIECE OF JUNK, OR BUY A NEW CAR. DID I GET SCREWED BY THE DEALER WHO SOLD IT TO ME, ALONG WITH MY "FAKE" EXTENDED WARRANTY? IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY THE MANUFACTURER CAN PARTAKE IN THE REPAIRS? I ALREADY KNOW SIMILAR PROBLEMS ARE HAPPENING TO OTHER OWNERS OF THE 1998 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER. *JB

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my wagon. I purchased it with 98K miles and have since put on about 175K miles. I've had a few minor issues with the emissions control, brakes, and tires, but nothing out of the ordinary. Recently, I brought it in for a check-up because it was running a little rough. The station called me a few hours later to let me know that it needed a tune-up. I was surprised to find out that I had the original plugs in the car after 175K miles! I think that's pretty impressive and it's still going strong.
-
This car has been reliable overall, with only one major failure in the alternator bearing after 160,000 miles. While there have been some minor issues such as broken window frames, flecking paint, and malfunctioning windshield wipers, these have not been serious problems. Additionally, the door sensors and parking brake light have occasionally misbehaved, and there have been issues with the hinge on the front storage compartment and the springs in the change storage. However, these issues have not affected the car's overall performance.
-
Hey there! That's a really nice car you've got. It might not be the best on gas in the city, but it's definitely a great choice for the highway.
-
I would highly recommend this car for any family. It has a lot of power and speed, and despite a few chips in the paint, the body is in great condition with no dents. The car is white in color with a comfortable beige cloth interior and a power driver seat. Recently, I had the speed sensor replaced in the transmission, but other than that, I have had no issues with this car. It currently has 67000 miles on it.
-
You bought the car used over 10 years ago with only 25,000 miles on it, and now it has over 276,000 miles. Despite its age, it consistently gets 21 mpg, and on a recent 1000 mile trip, it even got 29 mpg! Although it's starting to show its age and has some issues, it has been a fantastic car. When the time comes, you're thinking of replacing it with a used model, but not a new style one.

I recently bought a 98 GS with 50,000 miles on it for a great price. I've put 5,000 miles on it in just half a year and I have not been disappointed. Although I had to settle for this instead of an SHO, it's been performing well. After some practice, I've found that the transmission is fine as long as it's driven smoothly. Sudden acceleration can cause some issues, but the Duratec engine is fantastic. I'm excited to see the Duratec engine in a more stylish vehicle like the new Mazda 6, which incorporates valve timing similar to Honda's VTEC. Overall, I absolutely love my car!

I had a very negative experience with this car. Despite having only 18,000 miles on it, the shifter broke within a week of purchase, costing me $200 to fix. Shortly after, the transmission failed and I had to spend $1800 to replace it. To make matters worse, while driving down the road, one of the tires fell off due to weak lugs, which caused the wheel to roll off when I accidentally went over a curb. As a result of these issues, I have lost faith in Mercury and Ford as car manufacturers. In my opinion, Toyota is a much better choice.
