1994 Mercury Sable problems
The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.
Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.
Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

I CONTACTED THE DEALER ON CHURCH STREET IN NEW BEDFORD, SENTURY LINCOLN/MERCURY. THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE CAR IN. WHEN I GOT THERE, THEY TOLD ME THERE WOULD BE A $75.00 CHARGE TO SEE IF THAT IS THE PROBLEM, AND IF IT IS, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY, BECAUSE THE RECALL WAS NOT ON THEIR COMPUTER. I CALLED THE FORD COMPANY'S 800 NUMBER AND WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. I THEN CALLED A MERCURY NUMBER, THAT I GOT OFF THE INTERNET AND WAS TOLD BY THAT GENTLEMAN THAT THE ID # OF THE RECALL IS FROM A VENDOR AND THE FORD COMPANY HAS A RIGHT TO NOT CONSIDER IT A RECALL AND IF THEY DO NOT SUPPORT IT, WHICH THEY DO NOT, I WOULD HAVE TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH YOU, WHICH IS WHAT I AM DOING.

1994 Mercury Sable recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 1994 Mercury Sable.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
- Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE HEADLIGHTS CAN FLASH INTERMITTENTLY AS A RESULT OF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER OPENING. THE VEHICLE'S HEADLIGHTS CAN GO OUT FOR BRIEF INTERVALS.
- Consequence: LOSS OF HEADLIGHTS DURING VEHICLE OPERATION CAN AFFECT A DRIVER'S ABILITY TO NAVIGATE THE ROADWAY AND REDUCE THE VISIBILITY OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A HEADLIGHT SWITCH THAT INCORPORATES A CRICUIT BREAKER OF REVISED DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF A WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR AND WIRING, IF NEEDED.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES AND ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
- Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN
- Summary: THESE VEHICLES ARE ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, IOWA, MINNESOTA, NEBRASKA, NORTH DAKOTA, AND SOUTH DAKOTA. THE VEHICLES INVOLVED ARE 1992-1994 TEMPO/TOPAZ VEHICLES WITH 3.0L ENGINES; 1994 TEMPO/TOPAZ WITH 2.3L ENGINES; 1992-1995 TAURUS/SABLE WITH 3.8L ENGINES; 1994-1995 TAURUS/SABLE WITH 3.0L ENGINES AND 1992-1994 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL VEHICLES WITH 3.8L ENGINES. DURING HIGH WINDS, HEAVY, BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW, AND LOW TEMPERATURES, THE ENGINE COOLING FAN CAN BECOME BLOCKED OR FROZEN WITH SNOW. THE FAN MOTOR MAY NOT ROTATE AND COULD OVERHEAT.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE SMOKE OR FLAMES FROM THE FAN AND/OR SHROUD, THE FAN ELECTRICAL WIRING, OR THE FAN MOTOR RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ELECTRICAL JUMPER HARNESS CONTAINING AN AUTOMATIC RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE FAN MOTOR LOW SPEED CIRCUITRY FROM OVERHEATING.

Hi there! From what you've described, it sounds like the car has been through a lot, but it's great to hear that everything is in working order. The leather interior being in perfect shape is definitely a plus! The only thing to note is that the lumbar inflation in the passenger's seat isn't working, but that's a minor issue. Overall, it seems like a great car!
-
Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It's amazing to hear that you've put 160k miles on your car and it's still going strong! It sounds like you've taken great care of it with regular maintenance and check-ups. It's impressive that you haven't even had to replace the original brakes yet! You mentioned replacing 2 sensors back in 1999, which is understandable after so many years of use. Recently, you also replaced the auto antenna. It's great to hear that the car has held up well during your long trips. Thank you for sharing that you have the 3.8L engine. Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience with the car?
-
I received this car as a hand-me-down from my mother with 140k miles on it. Before I dive into the details, I must say that my mother is quite hard on cars. Now, onto my review. I have had to replace the stock head gasket on my car twice, but I have since upgraded to aftermarket heavy-duty gaskets, as well as new brakes, exhaust, cooling, A/C, suspension, fuel injection system, and a rebuilt 3.8 engine and transmission with upgrades, totaling about 10 grand. Since the upgrades, I have only experienced a slight problem with the temperature gauge fluctuating, but that is due to the fact that it's a 3.8 on a 3.0 cooling system (I have plans for an aftermarket fan upgrade in the works). Other than that, I have had no further issues after driving 20,000 miles.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it used with 89,000 miles on it and now it has 148,000 miles. I've had to get some major repairs on the a/c and some bolts and things only twice, but other than that, just routine maintenance like tires, oil changes, and replacing the battery twice in the past 7 years. Overall, I've had a really good experience with this car! When I bought it, it cost me $4,000.00 and it only took $13.00 to fill the gas tank. Now it costs $35 to fill the gas tank, but it's still a great car to take on road trips. The only downside is that the sun has done a number on the hood paint. Thanks for listening!

After the four tires were slit at a restaurant with only 750 miles on it, everything went well. The extended warranty was a good thing to have when the transmission needed fixing, but there were no problems getting it sorted. Recalls were also taken care of without any issues. The only downside was that it struggled in the snow and couldn't bring itself to move. Additionally, back seat riders felt like they were 'floating'.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I actually bought it from my grandmother back in '01 when it only had 41k miles on it. Overall, it's been a great riding car with good pickup. While I did have some transmission issues early on, I've never had to replace it. The engine still runs well at 122k miles, but I do notice a burnt oil smell after about 15 minutes of driving. However, I change the oil religiously every 3k miles. One annoying problem I've had is with the driver's side door latch loosening and having to be re-tightened often. I did have to replace the radiator at 110k miles, but overall it's been a really good car!

I've had this car for 100,000 miles throughout my high school and college days. Although it was towed 3 times, went through 4 starters, 2 fuel pumps, and left me stranded twice, I still think it's a good car. The power is great, with good pickup, and there's plenty of room on the inside. However, I wouldn't recommend buying this vehicle if it has over 100,000 miles.

The car I purchased has been a complete disappointment. Despite being brand new, it has had numerous issues, including a broken belt and multiple problems with the stabilizer bar, muffler, brakes, shocks, struts, and even the spring to open the trunk. The gas mileage is also far below what was advertised. These issues have been frustrating to deal with and have required multiple trips to the dealership for repairs. It is clear that this car is not up to the standards that were promised.

It sounds like you had a bit of trouble with the car's reliability. While it may have been a decent car overall, it's unfortunate that you had to deal with transmission issues. It can be frustrating when repairs are expensive, especially when they seem to come up frequently. Thanks for sharing your experience and warning others who may be considering a similar purchase.

The car was previously owned by a lovely lady. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing ongoing issues since the day of purchase. The brakes have failed three times, the check battery light is constantly on, and the radiator started to leak within two months of purchase. Despite bringing it back to the dealer/mechanic numerous times, I am hesitant to invest any more of my hard-earned money into this vehicle. I am looking forward to finding a better fit for my needs. Thank you for your understanding.
