2001 Mercury Sable problems

The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.

Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.

Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

Common 2001 Mercury Sable problems

The Mercury Sable, a midsize sedan produced by Ford Motor Company, has had its fair share of issues throughout the years. One of the most common problems reported by owners is related to the transmission, specifically in the 2003 model year.

Another common issue with the Mercury Sable is related to the engine. One specific problem is the engine oil pan gasket leak, which has been reported by multiple owners. This issue can lead to engine performance problems and may require a costly repair.

The idle air bypass valve is another problem area in the Mercury Sable. This component may cause engine performance problems, leading to difficulty starting the car or stalling while driving.

The camshaft sensor magnet may also be a source of issues for Sable owners. This component is responsible for controlling the fuel injection and ignition systems, and if it fails, it can lead to engine performance problems or even a no-start condition.

In addition to these mechanical issues, the Mercury Sable has also had its fair share of recalls. One of the most significant recalls affected certain sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and passenger vehicles that fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems." This recall affected the 2001 Mercury Sable and required the manufacturer to provide revised owner guide inserts to identify the locations of seating positions equipped with tether anchorages and provide instructions for securing child seats to these tether anchorages.

Another recall affected certain passenger vehicles equipped with adjustable pedals. If the grease from the adjustable pedal assembly enters the stop lamp switch, it can contaminate the contacts leading to carbon build-up and potentially a short circuit. This issue can lead to either the brake lamps staying on or to a loss of brake lamp function, increasing the risk of a crash.

Despite these issues, many owners have reported positive experiences with the Mercury Sable. Some owners have reported that the car has been very reliable, with only minor maintenance issues required over hundreds of thousands of miles. However, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of the common issues reported by owners and to consider these factors when making a purchasing decision.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-09-03
  • VIN: 1MEHM55S41A
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE ENGINE CRADLE/FRAME SUPPORTING THE ENGINE & TRANSMISSION AND SUSPENSION AND STEERING ASSEMBLIES FAILED DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION CAUSING THE REAR MOUNT AT THE BODY CONNECTION ON BOTH SIDES TO SEPARATE AND DROP ABOUT 3" CAUSING A LOSS OF STEERING. THE DROP OF THE CRADLE AND ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION PULLED DOWN ON THE STEERING SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINT UNDER THE DASH CAUSING THE STEERING TO BIND UP AND ALSO CAUSING THE ENTIRE STEERING AND SUSPENSION GEOMETRY TO FAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT GARAGED, WAS PURCHASED NEW BY ME, WAS NOT IN INVOLVED IN ANY FLOOD DAMAGE, WAS NOT IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO SALT WATER AND THE UNDERCARRIAGE WAS SPRAYED EACH TIME I FREQUENTLY WASHED THE VECHICLE. THE ENGINE CRADLE IN ADDITION TO THE REAR MOUNT FAILURE HAS EXTENSIVE RUST AND CORROSION THRUOUT THE STRUCTURE. AS SOMEONE WHO PAYS ATTENTION TO MY VEHICLE I BEGAN TO NOTICE RUST/CORROSION ON THE ENGINE CRADLE ABOUT 5 YEARS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE AND HAVE SEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR SIMILAR COMPLAINTS WITHOUT FINDING ANY. I'M WIRTTING THIS AFTER FINALLY SEEING A COMPLAINT ON A 2001 FORD TAURUS CRADLE/FRAME FAILURE AND THINK THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION SHOULD BE MADE PUBLIC. THANKFULLY I WAS GOING AT A SLOW SPEED AND WAS ABLE TO VEER THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. HAD I BEEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE EVENT WOULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC NOT ONLY TO ME BUT OTHERS ON THE ROAD ALSO. LOVED MY VEHICLE IT RUNS GREAT AND WAS LOOKING FOWARD TO MORE MILES WITH IT, UNFORTUNATELY THE REPAIR WOULD BE A MAJOR UNDERTAKING AND EXPENSE AND MY SABLE IS TO HEAD TO THE JUNK YARD ON A FLATBED.

  • Consequence: IN ADDITION, IF THE SWITCH AND/OR ASSOCIATED WIRING FAIL IN THE OPEN POSITION, THE BRAKE LIGHTS WILL NOT ACTUATE AND THE DRIVER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SHIFT THE VEHICLE OUT OF "PARK" IF THEY FAIL IN THE CLOSED POSITION, THE BRAKE LIGHTS WILL REMAIN ON, WHICH WILL NOT ALLOW THE SPEED CONTROL TO BE ACTIVATED. THIS COULD ALSO CAUSE THE BATTERY TO DISCHARGE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH AND ASSOCIATED WIRING ASSEMBLY AND INSTALL A NEWLY DESIGNED STOP LAMP SWITCH AND WIRE ASSEMBLY. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON APRIL 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ADJUSTABLE PADELS ARE BEING RECALLED IN ORDER TO ADJUST THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS TO A MINIMUM OF 50 MM OF LATERAL SEPARATION. SIMULTANEOUS APPLICATION OF BOTH THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN ENGINE RPM.
  • Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A CUSTOMER EXPERIENCING AN "UNINTENDED VEHICLE SPEED INCREASE" OR A PERCEIVED "UNABLE TO STOP" CONDITION.
  • Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE INSTRUCTED AS TO THE PROPER WAY TO SET THE POSITION OF THE PEDALS AND TO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO A DEALER TO HAVE THE SPACING BETWEEN THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS MEASURED. IF THE SPACING IS FOUND TO BE LESS THAN 50 MM, THE DEALER WILL ADJUST THE PEDALS TO INCREASE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM TO GREATER THAN 50 MM. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 28, 2002. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332.

Negative 2001 Mercury Sable car reviews

  1. Hollis Steuber 2024-07-28

The car experienced multiple issues such as transmission failure at 3000 miles, bad rotors at 10,000 miles, front end shimmys and shakes, and a check engine light at 7000 miles. Additionally, the cigarette lighter pops out onto the passenger floor, and the car hesitates to start and loses momentum while driving. The pleather seats are uncomfortable, and the front passenger seat is not roomy. The car also has poor fuel economy. Despite these disappointments, I remain confident in my purchase decision.

  2. Clement Terry 2024-07-04

This car is unreliable. It has had multiple problems since being purchased new, including issues with the brakes, exterior, windows, sensors, and axle. It is not suitable for those who plan on driving long distances. While I have owned and still own other Ford family vehicles, this one has been disappointing. Its resale value is low for a reason. However, when it does run, it performs well and has plenty of power, even at highway speeds.

  3. Ross Shanahan 2024-02-03

I was thrilled to come across this car that a lovely older lady had traded in after only 5 years and 10,027 miles. The price of $9,100 was too good to pass up! I've actually owned two Tauruses before - a '96 that unfortunately got run over by a semi when it had 90,000 miles on it (thankfully no one was hurt), and a 2000 SE that now has 95,000 miles and has been problem-free. So when I saw this car for sale, I knew I had to have it. The 24 valve engine is fantastic and it rides like a dream - perfect for long highway trips. The only downside is the sound system that came with the car - it's not great, but I suppose the Mach system is better.

  4. Aidan Hills 2024-01-24

The small V-6 may feel underpowered with only 155 horsepower, and the gas mileage around town is not great at 15mpg. However, on the highway, it gets about 25mpg. If you're looking for a better option, the LS model would be a great choice.

Positive 2001 Mercury Sable car reviews

  1. Perry Doyle 2024-11-23

I am confident in the quality of this car. Although I experienced a rough idling issue due to a burnt valve, I am pleased to report that it is covered under the factory warranty. The dealership has informed me that the repair will take another week, but I trust that they will handle it with the utmost care and expertise. While this issue was unexpected, I remain satisfied with my overall experience with the car and the dealership. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Lonzo Auer 2024-11-20

I've owned this car for 7 years and it's been a dream! All I've had to do is change the tires and battery. It drives like a sports car but rides like a Lincoln, and handles mountain curves like a pro. I highly recommend it!

  3. Barney Mayert 2024-11-17

I've owned LS Premium for 20 months now. My wife loves it so much that I can't get her out of the driver's seat! It's just as attractive as competing Japanese models, with good pep and handling. What's more, it's VERY ROOMY for a mid-size car - even better than the Japanese choices. We frequently receive compliments on the car from our friends.

  4. Brenden Hagenes 2024-11-17

This is a great car for the price! It has lots of room for a family, but it is still very stylish. It's also a very safe and sound car to drive, with great crash test ratings. Plus, it has adjustable gas and brake pedals, so you can sit as far away from the airbag as possible. We absolutely love this car and would definitely purchase it again!

  5. Nat Swift 2024-10-23

The Sable is a much better vehicle than the '99 Taurus Wagon with duatechv6. It has respectable handling, extremely comfortable seats, and a Duratech v6 that provides about 4mpg better gas mileage overall than the Taurus. The Sable's ride is not too soft and it handles corners well. Investing an extra grand or so in the Sable is definitely worth it.
