Mercury Sable 1993 problems

mercury logo

The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.

Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.

Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

Common Mercury Sable 1993 problems

The Mercury Sable, a mid-size sedan produced by Ford Motor Company, was first introduced in 1986. The 1993 model of the Mercury Sable has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Idle Air Bypass Valve Problems: The Idle Air Bypass Valve is a component of the engine management system that controls the idle speed of the engine. Some owners of the 1993 Mercury Sable have reported problems with this valve, which can cause engine performance issues, such as rough idling, stalling, or difficulty starting the engine.
  • Engine Oil Pan Gasket Leaks: The engine oil pan gasket is a seal that prevents oil leaks from the oil pan. Some owners of the 1993 Mercury Sable have reported leaks from the engine oil pan gasket, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Camshaft Sensor Magnet Failure: The camshaft sensor is a component of the engine management system that provides information about the position of the camshaft to the engine control module. Some owners of the 1993 Mercury Sable have reported problems with the camshaft sensor magnet, which can cause engine performance issues, such as rough idling, stalling, or difficulty starting the engine.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission problems are a common issue with the 1993 Mercury Sable, with many owners reporting problems such as slipping, jerking, or difficulty shifting. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged transmission components, low transmission fluid levels, or issues with the transmission control module.
  • Steering Problems: Some owners of the 1993 Mercury Sable have reported problems with the steering system, such as difficulty steering, wandering, or pulling to one side. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged steering components, issues with the power steering system, or problems with the suspension system.
  • Fuel System Problems: Some owners of the 1993 Mercury Sable have reported problems with the fuel system, such as difficulty starting the engine, poor fuel economy, or stalling. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including issues with the fuel pump, fuel injectors, or fuel pressure regulator.
  • Brakes Problems: Some owners of the 1993 Mercury Sable have reported problems with the brakes, such as difficulty stopping, squeaking or grinding noises, or a soft or spongy brake pedal. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged brake components, issues with the brake fluid, or problems with the brake system components.

These are some of the most frequently reported problems with the 1993 Mercury Sable. It is important to note that not all vehicles of this model will experience these issues, and some problems may be more common in certain production years or under specific driving conditions. If you are considering purchasing a 1993 Mercury Sable, it is recommended that you have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential issues before making a purchase.

  • Summary: I BELIEVE THIS CAR WAS INCLUDED IN A RECALL FOR FAULTY BOLTS HOLDING THE ENGINE FRAME(REAR BOLTS. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN OCTOBER OF 2006. IN DECEMBER OF 2011 I TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALER FOR A STEERING PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE REAR BOLTS AND IT COST ME ALMOST $400 DOLLARS. JUST RECENTLY I DISCOVERED THIS CAR HAD BEEN INCLUDED IN THE, I BELIEVE 1998 RECALL NOTICE FOR REPLACING THE REAR BOLTS BECAUSE OF THE DANGER OF THEM RUSTING OUT. MY QUESTION IS: IS THERE THE POSSIBILITY THAT I CAN STILL BE COVERED UNDER ANY FORD/MERCURY TERMS, SOMETHING LIKE A FORD MOTORS GOODWILL PROGRAM. ONE BOLT WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED AND BROKEN AND THE OTHER JUST RUSTED BUT NOT YET BROKEN. SHOULD THE FORD/MERCURY DEALER I BROUGHT THE CAR TO HAVE KNOWN THAT THIS WAS A RECALLED VEHICLE AND DISCUSSED THIS WITH ME. MILEAGE AT THAT TIME WAS 79,524. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-01-05
  • VIN: 1MELM58UXPA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: IN EARLY JANUARY 2008, MY MERCURY SABLE 3.0 WAGON, BEGAN TO HAVE TRANSMISSION (AX4S) PROBLEMS OF ERADICT UPSHIFTING AND DOWNSHIFTING WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP AND CLIMBING A HILL. IN ADDITION WHEN I CHECKED THE FLUID LEVEL WHEN THE MOTOR IS HOT IT APPEARS LOW IN ATF FLUID, BUT WHEN THE MOTOR HAS COOLED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID STICK INDICATES THE TRANSMISSION FULL AT THE RIGHT LEVEL. I HAVE BECOME AWARE THAT THE AX4S HAS A HISTORY OF "INADEQUATE INTERNAL LUBRICATION OF CRITICAL PARTS AND A WEAK FORWARD CLUTCH PISTON THAT CRACKS AND LEAKS PRESSURE" THAT LEADS TO COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION. MY CAR IS NO LONGER OPERATIONAL DUE TO TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE ESTIMATED COST ON AVERAGE FROM TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOPS IN MY AREA IS 2200.00. I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THE CAR AND REALIZE NOW THAT THIS PARTICULAR TRANSMISSION HAS NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF FAILURE AND FORD IS AWARE OF THE FACTORY DEFECTS BUILT INTO THE TRANSMISSION. I WOULD LIKE FORD TO REPAIR MY TRANSMISSION AT THERE EXPENSE SINCE THEY HAVE BEEN AWARE OF THESE PROBLEM FOR YEARS YET CONTINUED TO MANUFACTURE AND INSTALL THIS TRANSMISSION INTO THERE VEHICLES BEING SOLD TO THE PUBLIC. *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-03-01
  • VIN: 1MELM50U8PG
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: IN 1993 I HELPED MY MOTHER PURCHASE A NEW MERCURY SABLE IN RACINE, WISCONSIN WHERE SHE LIVED. BY 2001 MY MOTHER WAS AT AN AGE SHE SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING FOR SEVERAL REASONS. THE BIG EVENT WAS WHEN SHE BROKE HER HIP AND WE ALSO LEARNED SHE WAS STARTING TO LOSE HER SHORT TERM MEMORY. IN LATE 2001 WE HAD THE 1993 MERCURY SABLE WITH ONLY ABOUT 30 TO 35,000 MILES STORED PENDING DECIDING IF ANOTHER FAMILY COULD USE THE CAR. IN EARLY 2002 WE HAD THE TITLE TRANSFERRED TO MY SON AND HE STARTED TO DRIVE THE CAR. HE TOLD US WITHIN A WEEK THERE WAS A TERRIBLE NOISE AND WE HAD THE CAR CHECKED AT OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER IN LEXINGTON ILLINOIS. THERE SERVICE MANAGER, DANNY, TOLD ME BOTH FRONT COIL SPRINGS WERE BROKEN. I FOUND THIS VERY ODD BECAUSE OF THE LOW MILES ON THE CAR AND IT WAS NOT DRIVEN MUCH IN THE WINTER SALT. I HAD DANNY SAVE BOTH OF THE OLD SPRINGS FOR ME BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOULD COVER THE EXPENSE. BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT SPRINGS WERE BROKEN IN THE SAME AREA AND THE ORIGINAL PAINT WAS ON THE SPRINGS, INDICATING TO ME THEY HAD VERY LITTLE IF ANY SALT DAMAGE. I STILL HAVE THE SPRINGS IN STORAGE. I ALSO LEARNED LATER THAT FORD HAD SOME SORT OF RECALL FOR FRONT COIL SPRINGS, BUT THEY NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED BY DECEMBER 2001. FORD DID NOT PAY THE $340 BILL THAT I PAID TO REPLACE THE SPRINGS IN EARLY 2002. YOU MIGHT ASK, WHY AM I DOCUMENTING THIS NOW. TWO REASONS, ONE I JUST LEARNED OF THE WEB SITE AND TWO, I OWN A 2000 FORD TAURUS AND JUST RECEIVED A LETTER ABOUT A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS. APPARENTLY, FORD DID NOT LEARN FROM THE EARLIER PROBLEM. I LEARNED LATER HOW THE BROKEN SPRINGS COULD HAVE CAUSED TIRE FAILURE AND A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. ALTHOUGH MY MOTHER ALWAYS HAD HER CAR SERVICED AT THE DEALER, THEY APPARENTLY NEVER CHECKED IT FOR THE RECALL ITEM. I FEEL THERE NEEDS TO BE A MORE ACCOUNTABLITY ON THE PART OF THE MANUFACTURER(FORD) TO ASSURE ALL CARS ARE CHECKED. MY MOTHERS CAR WAS OVERLOOKED, PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF HER AGE.*AK

Mercury Sable 1993 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the Mercury Sable 1993.

1998-12-16
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
  • Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.

Negative Mercury Sable 1993 car reviews

The Sable has a great body design and a surprisingly responsive 3.8L engine. However, there have been some issues with integrity. Unfortunately, I have experienced some of the well-known problems with this model, such as a blown engine gasket (which was replaced with a re-manufactured engine), air conditioner problems, radiator leaks at 33,000 miles (which was also replaced), and electrical malfunctions. Despite calling Ford several times for help, they refused to assist me, even though they admitted to having many calls and recalls. It seems that many of these problems are well-known. Perhaps Ford is facing its own problems now because it lacks sufficient accountability for its bad design.

Rest assured that you will find a reliable vehicle, as we have thoroughly inspected and serviced this car to ensure its optimal performance. With only 88k miles, this car has been well-maintained and is in excellent condition. We stand behind our work and are confident that you will be satisfied with your purchase.

Congratulations on your new purchase! You've just bought a 93 4DR sedan with 95000 miles on the odometer. The car looks great and rides well overall. However, there are a few things to note. The transmission seems to shift hard when putting into gear, and unfortunately, the back left passenger power window does not work. Additionally, the A/C needs a new high and low-pressure hose off the compressor, which may be expensive as it is a dealer ordered part. Despite these issues, the car runs pretty well and has a smooth suspension. You got a great deal at only $1800.00! I would definitely recommend it to anyone, but make sure to do your homework. The car looks amazing and has a nice style.

This car has been a complete disappointment. Despite following the owner's manual for maintenance, the engine required replacement at 62,000 miles, followed by two more transmission replacements at 68,000 and 78,000 miles. The brakes wore out after only 20,000 miles, and the A/C stopped working at 70,000 miles. Unfortunately, the car spent a lot of time in the shop, resulting in low mileage.

  5. Noble Grant 2024-03-26

This car was mostly reliable until it hit 110K. Unfortunately, the motor mount broke and a few other issues arose. Additionally, the Sable seems to have a recurring issue with the A/C. We had to fix the A/C hose at 65K, and then at 100K, it stopped working again for no apparent reason.

Our Sable was a program car with 23k miles. It was very roomy and comfortable, and we could go anywhere in that car, which, being military, happened quite often. My husband did all the seasonal maintenance and oil changes, and we never had a problem. I was really impressed with its safety when a lady pulled out in front of us and made us T-bone her car (totaled our Sable). The front end was pushed all the way to our dashboard, but the dashboard was intact and did not cave in on us, allowing us to get out safely. I bought a Taurus thinking I was getting the same type of car, but I have not been pleased with it. I wish I could find another 93 Sable!

I really like your car! It sounds like it's been very reliable and comfortable for you. Plus, it has a nice take off!

  3. Imani Hoeger 2024-08-25

You have a great car! It sounds like it has been well-maintained with regular transmission fluid changes and the addition of Stop-Leak to the radiator. The comfortable seats and smooth ride make it a pleasure to drive. With the right tires, it's the best snow car you've ever driven. The suspension is also impressive, especially with the after-market shocks. No changes were made to the original text.

Smooth and crisp response, the Mercury Sable is the car for you. Like lemonade on a hot, sunny day, you'll enjoy the cool pleasure of running your fingers over the dash and feeling refreshed. If you're looking for a newer car, we have plenty of options available that might suit your needs. Let us know how we can help you find the perfect car!

Hi there! Thank you for considering this car! It has been well-maintained and has a lot of life left in it. It has had some minor issues, such as the AC and left rear window, but those have been fixed. Unfortunately, the head gasket did break earlier this year, but it has been repaired and is running great! It has a lot of pick-up and is a well-made car, especially for a US car. Just to let you know, a friend of mine has a similar car and has only had issues with the AC after 80000 miles. Let me know if you have any questions!
