1995 Mercury Sable problems
The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.
Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.
Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

- Summary: I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS THESE PEOPLE THAT HAVE ALL POSTED INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET. NOW I HAVE TAKE MY CAR INTO MULTIPLE PLACES TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RESOLVED, AND NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I THINK SINCE SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM THAT IT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM, BUT A PROBLEM THAT MERCURY AS A COMPANY NEEDS TO FIX. I AM HAVING AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH MY VAN NOT STARTING. IT IS A 1993 MERCURY VILLAGER. ON SATURDAY AFTER DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR WITH MULTIPLE STOPS WHERE I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WENT INTO A STORE, IT WOULD NOT START. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY EVERY SINGLE LIGHT CAME ON, SEAT BELT, CHECK ENGINE, IT SEEMED LIKE 7 OR 8 IN ALL. THERE WAS NOTHING. WE TRIED JUMPING IT, BUT THAT DID NOT DO ANYTHING. LATER THAT DAY SOMEONE TOLD ME IT SOUNDED TO HIM LIKE IT WASN'T IN PARK OR AT LEAST THE CAR DIDN'T THINK IT WAS IN PARK. I TRIED STARTING IT AGAIN AFTER DEPRESSING THE BRAKE, TURNING TO ON AND MOVING FROM PARK TO NEUTRAL THEN BACK TO PARK. IT STARTED UP JUST LIKE ALWAYS. I DROVE AROUND AND MADE 2 STOPS. THE FIRST TIME IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP, THE SECOND TIME IT WOULDN'T START, BUT AFTER MOVING IT TO NEUTRAL AND BACK TO PARK IT STARTED RIGHT UP. AFTER A TOTAL DRIVING TIME OF ABOUT 35 - 40 MINUTES I ARRIVED HOME. ABOUT 20 MINUTES LATER I WENT OUT TO START THE CAR AND GOT NOTHING. THIS TIME THE NEUTRAL TO PARK TRICK DID NOT WORK. I TRIED NUMEROUS TIME OVER THE COURSE OF AN HOUR WITH NO LUCK. HAVE A 1997 VILLAGER WITH 130K ON IT. THE VAN HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE UNTIL TWO DAYS AGO. I WENT OUT TO START IT AND IT SPITS, SPUTTERS, BACKFIRES AND DIES. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1MELM5343SA
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: COMMENTS: I HAVE A 1995 MERCURY SABLE WITH 52,000 MILES ON IT. SOME YEARS AGO, FORD ISSUED A LETTER SAYING IT WOULD MAKE REPAIRS IF THE HEAD GASKET PREMATURELY BLEW ON THIS CAR AT UNDER 60,000 MILES OR WITHIN 5 YEARS. ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO, WITH NO WARNING, MY SABLE BLEW ITS HEAD GASKET IN MY GARAGE, AFTER I HAD TURNED OFF THE CAR AND GOTTEN OUT OF IT. IT WAS JUST A MIRACLE THAT I WAS STILL IN THE GARAGE WITH MY HUSBAND WHEN IT HAPPENED. NORMALLY, I WOULD HAVE GONE IN THE HOUSE AND SHUT THE DOOR. AT ANY RATE, I TURNED AROUND AND SMOKE WAS BILLOWING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. MY HUSBAND JUMPED IN THE CAR (I WOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT) AND BACKED IT INTO OUR COURT. I RAN FOR THE PHONE AND CALLED 911. MY POINT IS, THAT EXCEPT FOR THE FLUKE OF MY BEING IN THE GARAGE AT THE TIME, MY HOUSE COULD HAVE GONE UP IN SMOKE! WHEN I CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER, THEY REFERRED ME TO FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE. JOSH AT CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLD ME THAT THE "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM" ON THIS CAR HAD EXPIRED AND THAT THERE ARE NO AVAILABLE COVERAGES. HE FURTHER STATED THAT I HAD NO RECOURSE TO ANYONE ELSE IN THE COMPANY BECAUSE FORD HAD "EMPOWERED" THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PROGRAM TO ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS OF THIS TYPE. I THINK THAT IF MY HOUSE HAD BURNED DOWN, FORD CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE HAD SOME LIABILITY. THE COST TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE IS $2,000, NEARLY AS MUCH AS IT'S WORTH. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM? *NM

- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
- Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES AND ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
- Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN
- Summary: THESE VEHICLES ARE ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, IOWA, MINNESOTA, NEBRASKA, NORTH DAKOTA, AND SOUTH DAKOTA. DURING HIGH WINDS, HEAVY, BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW, AND LOW TEMPERATURES, THE ENGINE COOLING FAN CAN BECOME BLOCKED OR FROZEN WITH SNOW. THE FAN MOTOR MAY NOT ROTATE AND COULD OVERHEAT.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE SMOKE OR FLAMES FROM THE FAN AND/OR SHROUD, THE FAN ELECTRICAL WIRING, OR THE FAN MOTOR RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ELECTRICAL JUMPER HARNESS CONTAINING AN AUTOMATIC RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE FAN MOTOR LOW SPEED CIRCUITRY FROM OVERHEATING.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES
- Summary: THE RETAINER CLIP WHICH HOLDS THE MASTER CYLINDER PUSH ROD TO THE BRAKE PEDAL ARM IS MISSING OR NOT COMPLETELY INSTALLED. THE PUSH ROD CAN SEPARATE FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL ARM.
- Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY AND AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALL THE RETAINER CLIP.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you recently purchased a car with less than 80k miles after 10 years. It's great to hear that the car is still easy to maneuver despite its weight. Additionally, it's comfortable on long trips and has been very reliable, with the exception of some transmission problems at 75k miles. If you need a transmission, I would suggest going with a reliable company instead of the dealership, which can be more expensive. Overall, it sounds like you have a great car that has served you well!

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with you. I bought this amazing car from a small used car lot for only 3000 dollars! The outside is flawless and it has the most unique mermaid green paint that you can recognize from miles away. It only had 50,000 miles on it, so I just had to buy it for the low mileage. And let me tell you, it turned out to be the best car I've ever owned! It's so reliable and comfortable on trips, and the gas mileage is excellent. My friends love the back seat, especially when we have all the kids on board. I even replaced the radio and sway bars, and it's still running like a dream. I just fell in love with it! What a bargain, right?

This car was the first car I have ever owned. My great grandma bought it used, previously being a rental car in '96. When she gave it to me in 2007, it had 75k miles on it and no problems. After getting it, I have only had to do mainly maintenance items on it such as tires and fluid changes. The build of the car makes it easy to replace anything in the car and the parts tend to be cheap and affordable. A few months ago, I was in an accident where my poor car was totaled, but she is still a trooper and I still drive her. I highly recommend this car as it is highly dependable for its age. I am about to give the car to my sister as her first car and I hope that it will still be as dependable as it was for me.

After 7 years and some 120000 miles, my '95 Sable is still running smoothly and dependably, requiring no more maintenance than my former foreign cars. It's impressive how the previous improvements made in 1995 have paid off in terms of performance, reliability, and efficiency, which compare favorably with foreign cars. I must say that the value and durability of this car have far exceeded my expectations.

Your scale is loaded and it is very dependable. It has everything standard.

This car has proven to be unreliable and has required significant repairs, including a new transmission, radiator, alternator, brakes, and numerous belts. Despite its roomy interior, I cannot recommend purchasing this car due to its ongoing issues. My personal experience with this car, as well as my family's experiences with similar models, has been consistently negative. I strongly advise against investing in this vehicle.

When this car was first purchased, it only had 30k miles on it. Unfortunately, within the first month, the car experienced some issues with its engine and transmission. Additionally, the center mirror fell off the windshield, and a couple of months later, the side mirror fell off as well, without any apparent reason. This car also struggles with driving up hills, and it can't go over 15 mph even when the gas pedal is pressed hard. I have had the exact same problems as 'the_amazing_al' who posted on 06/09/2003. The speedometer goes bouncy around 70 mph, and there are a lot of leaks everywhere. I even had to put in a brand new starter motor. Unfortunately, this car has been nothing but problems...

I bought this car used with low miles and I'm really happy with it so far. The V-6 is very powerful and this car really runs well. It's built pretty well too. My only complaint is the gas mileage, which was a real eye-opener to me after driving an economy car for so long. Other than that, I love it. I heard that the 1995 model is the last year they made them good like this.

My experience with this car would have been much better if it hadn't had so many vital systems fail, some of them more than once. It's disappointing to have a car with less than 100K miles that has had issues with head gaskets, radiator, power steering rack, lower motor mount, various intake parts, multiple brake jobs, etc. However, I believe that there are better options out there, such as a Honda. Thank you for considering my feedback.

I bought the car for $250 from a friend. They sold it to me cheap because the transmission needs to be rebuilt and it revs high going into 3rd gear. Unfortunately, the speedometer is also very bouncy. Right now, the car is not running due to a bad starter, but once it is replaced, it should be back in working condition. Despite these issues, the car has lots of room and is very comfortable. Overall, not a bad car for $250!
