The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.

In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.

During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, exposure to heat, or a faulty spark plug.
  • Suspension Problems: The 1994 Mercury Cougar is also known to have suspension problems. These problems can include worn out shocks or struts, which can cause the car to feel unstable when driving. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, exposure to road salt, or a lack of maintenance.
  • Air Conditioning Issues: The air conditioning system in the 1994 Mercury Cougar is also known to have issues. These problems can include a lack of cool air, or a strange odor coming from the vents. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a low refrigerant level, a faulty compressor, or a clogged evaporator.

In summary, the 1994 Mercury Cougar is a reliable vehicle, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. These problems can include a hesitant start, power steering leaks, faulty ignition coils, suspension issues, and air conditioning problems. Negative 1994 Mercury Cougar car reviews

  1. Christop Bashirian 2024-11-22

This car is truly unique. Its driving experience, appearance, and overall design are becoming increasingly rare. Despite having several issues, it offers a superior ride quality compared to modern cars. Even when taking sharp turns, you never feel any harsh pulls. The car glides through effortlessly. Although I didn't get the eight-cylinder, it still had enough power after I installed an intake and chip. It endured many collisions caused by other reckless drivers and always came out with less damage. I will always cherish my memories of it.

  2. Gennaro Haag 2024-09-25

Hey there! If you're thinking about buying a car, you might want to avoid the Mercury Cougar from 1992-1995. Unfortunately, these models are known for having issues with blown head gaskets, which can be a costly repair. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

  3. Simeon White 2024-07-10

I bought this car brand new and it's loaded! It has 145,500 miles on it and still drives great. The car handles really well and gets good gas mileage, between 22-28. Recently, I had to replace the water pump, freeze plug, and head gaskets. The roof needs to be repainted due to living on the beach, but there is no rust on the car. The interior still looks really good, almost new. We have definitely gotten our money's worth out of this car!

  4. Garrison Hartmann 2024-05-08

I previously owned an older Cougar (89) and got a lot out of the car. So, when it came time to buy a new car, I went with what works! I purchased a 94 Cougar 3.1 liter. I travel pretty far for work and I find my Cougar to be quite comfortable!

Positive 1994 Mercury Cougar car reviews

  1. Garnet Cormier 2024-11-14

This car is so much fun to drive and it's also quite reliable. The V6 can be a bit expensive due to the head gasket issue, but other than that, it's amazing! The interior is absolutely beautiful and the exterior is very nice too.

  2. Lonny Wisoky 2024-10-22

I've owned my Cougar since September 1997. It has a wonderful 4.6 V8 engine that responds immediately to the slightest touch of the gas pedal. The car handles very well and corners like a much smaller car. The seats are very comfortable and provide excellent lower back and side support. Braking is very good, and the anti-lock and traction control systems have worked well in the winter. With 123,560 miles on the car, I have not had any major repairs. The only issue I've encountered is a shudder in the transmission, but at 123,500 miles, everything is still okay. All in all, the Cougar is the best car I've ever owned!

  3. Haskell Stokes 2024-10-18

A fast, comfortable car that drives and handles with the best of them. Mine has a 4.6 V8 and all the options. It cruises at 100mph like it's 55mph, with excellent brakes, A/C, and a stereo radio. Just a good car, it's too bad that Ford, as usual, promoted their trash cars and let this one die, as they did the T-bird also.

  4. Adrian Batz 2024-10-12

My 1995 XR7 4.6 V8 had over 600,000 miles and never burned a drop of oil. It was the best running car I ever owned, out of the six I've had in the past. However, due to its age and the tough winters here in Ohio, it was time to let it go.

  5. Gino Bernier 2024-09-17

What I love about the early 90's Ford/Mercury cars is that their engines are all interchangeable. I once took a 3.8 out of a '90 T-Bird and put it in a Mustang. Later, I took it out and put it in a Cougar. The Cougar is a pretty reliable car.
