The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.

In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.

During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

Common 2000 Mercury Cougar problems

The 2000 Mercury Cougar has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to electrical issues, alternator problems, and transmission issues.

Electrical issues are a significant concern for many 2000 Mercury Cougar owners. These problems can manifest in various ways, such as the battery light flashing, the ABS light coming on, and the car ultimately dying. This issue can be caused by a defective connection wire, as reported by one owner who went through three alternators and an extended warranty before finding the root cause.

Alternator problems are another common issue with the 2000 Mercury Cougar. The alternator keeps failing, which can lead to the car running roughly or stalling. This issue can be frustrating for owners, as it can lead to significant repair costs. In some cases, the alternator failure may be covered under an extended warranty, but this is not always the case.

Transmission issues are also prevalent in the 2000 Mercury Cougar. Some owners have reported that the car goes into neutral and does not move forward, even though it goes in reverse. This issue can be caused by a modulator or sensor problem, but it may also be a sign of a more significant transmission issue. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced, which can be a costly repair.

In summary, the 2000 Mercury Cougar has several common problems, primarily related to electrical issues, alternator problems, and transmission issues. These issues can lead to significant repair costs and can be frustrating for owners. However, some owners still love the car and would buy another one, despite its problems. If you are considering purchasing a 2000 Mercury Cougar, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and to budget accordingly for potential repairs.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-07-30
  • VIN: 1ZWFT61L9Y5
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: MY 2000 MERCURY COUGAR SUDDENLY STARTED SPUTTERING, BUCKING, AND IN LESS THAN TWO MINUTES STOPPED IN TRAFFIC. IT WOULD CRANK BUT NOT START. I HAD TO HAVE IT PUSHED OFF THE ROAD OUT OF TRAFFIC. IT WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE MECHANIC TOLD ME IT WAS A FAULTY FUEL PUMP SYSTEM. WHEN LOOKING ONLINE FOR RECALLS OR SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGNS, ON THE FORD WEBSITE, THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT COUGARS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL PUMP SYSTEM. THE WEBSITE DID NOT SPECIFY ANY MODEL YEAR. WHEN LOOKING ON ANOTHER WEBSITE AND SEARCHING RECALLS, THE 2000 COUGAR HAD NO RECALLS OR SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGNS. WHAT IS INTERESTING TO ME IS THAT THE OTHER THREE MODEL YEARS, 1999, 2001, AND 2002, ALL HAD RECALLS ON THE FUEL PUMP SYSTEM. FORD MOTOR COMPANY ISSUED AN EXTENDED MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY ON THE FUEL PUMP SYSTEM FOR THOSE THREE MODEL YEARS UNTIL DECEMBER 2010. MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPANY REGARDING OUR PROBLEM AND WERE TOLD THAT WE WERE SENT A NOTICE REGARDING THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND WE SHOULD HAVE HAD IT FIXED BEFORE THE WARRANTY ENDED. OUR CAR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY THEREFORE WE DID NOT RECEIVE A NOTICE. THEY BASICALLY SAID SORRY, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN FOR THE $600+ REPAIR BILL AND HAVE A GREAT DAY. WHEN A CAR IS ONLY MADE FOR FOUR YEARS AND THREE OF THOSE FOUR HAVE A SAFETY PROBLEM THAT CAUSES THE CAR TO STOP SUDDENLY IT STANDS TO REASON THAT THE FOURTH MODEL YEAR MADE WITH THE SAME PARTS WOULD HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

I WENT ONLINE TO LOOK AT POSSIBLY RECALLS AND SAW THAT THERE WAS ONE DECRIBING THE EXACT ISSUE I HAVE. I CALLED THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN HUNTLEY, ILLINOIS AND TALKED TO A GUY IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, NAMED MIKE. HE TOLD ME THAT THE RECALL ONLY AFFECTED CERTAIN MERCURY COUGARS FROM CERTAIN PLANTS.... I AM ALSON HAVING ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR.

Negative 2000 Mercury Cougar car reviews

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with this car. While I initially fell in love with its looks, unfortunately, it hasn't been the most reliable. I bought it as a birthday present to myself, but since driving it off the lot a year ago, I've already spent $4000 in repairs. Currently, it's at the garage waiting for another transmission, which is frustrating since I've had it in twice before for the same issue. On top of that, my AC stopped working this past summer, the fan at the radiator stopped working, and the headlights do this dimming thing that just drives me crazy. However, it does have a great radio! It's definitely seen the back of a tow truck more than the road itself. Just wanted to share my experience with you.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed some reviews about this car and I was surprised to see that they weren't very positive. I'm currently experiencing some issues with my car and it's currently at the shop. The Ford technicians are trying to figure out why my car won't start most of the time and why I've had to replace the alternator four times. When I first got my car back in January of 2001, I had some issues with the transmission and had to get it overhauled at just 16 km. Additionally, my rear bumper doesn't seem to fit properly. Thanks for listening!

In the past 2 years, my Cougar has unfortunately required multiple repairs for various issues such as fuel pump malfunctions (requiring replacement twice), brake and transmission problems, electrical failures, and leaks. Despite its attractive appearance, the car has not been worth the trouble. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to upgrade to a more reliable vehicle.

  4. Moriah Fadel 2024-08-04

Although I have experienced some issues with this car, I can confidently say that it has been reliable for the most part. While there have been some breakdowns over the years, I believe that these are isolated incidents and not indicative of the car's overall quality. While it may not be the best fit for everyone, I would recommend this car to those who prioritize reliability and affordability.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the Cougar. While it may not be the most reliable vehicle, I did have a bit of trouble with it. Unfortunately, I was in an accident recently where I hit an electrical pole going 45 mph and the airbags did not deploy. Additionally, the seatbelt did not lock in place for the passengers in the backseat. As a first time driver, I found it to be a bit challenging to handle. I would recommend considering other options for your teenage daughter or son. It's worth noting that the car is not very sturdy and can dent easily. It also broke down multiple times for various reasons. I hope this information helps!

  1. Loy Lebsack 2024-11-21

The car is still drivable, but there are a few minor issues that have come up. Firstly, the sunroof is broken and sometimes leaks during rain. Secondly, the driver's side window doesn't always go up. Thirdly, the alternator died a year ago. Lastly, the counter for how many miles you have left is way off and has died twice on me when it said it had 23 miles left. Despite these issues, the car is still functional. However, I am planning to sell it as I would prefer a Ford Mustang.

  2. Nico Shanahan 2024-08-03

It's great to hear that you and your husband have had such a positive experience with this car! From coast to coast, it sounds like it has been a reliable and fun ride. The hatchback and folding seats also seem to have been very useful for your needs, allowing you to haul furniture and help out friends. It's understandable that you're sad to be selling it, especially with the bucket seats in the back not being ideal for car seats. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Kobe Kuhlman 2024-08-01

I love my cat, it's a really good car. Although I had some problems like the alternator, it has been reliable and I have never had any issues with the gas. I can drive my car with almost no gas and it never stops. It's a great car!

  4. Hilbert Cummerata 2024-06-14

Runs well, but could benefit from a bit more trunk space.

  5. Geovany Rowe 2024-06-12

I bought my Cougar back in November 1999 and I absolutely love it! I always make sure to keep up with its scheduled maintenance, and in return, it purrs like a, well...cougar. After 3 years, I only had to replace the tires and brakes. I haven't had any other problems with it. There were a few minor recalls, such as a battery cable not being connected correctly, but the service I received from my dealer was quick and efficient. I have a 5-speed which performs really well in merging situations and pulling out into traffic. The interior is designed for no more than 2 people, but the bucket seats make for a comfortable ride.
