Mercury Cougar 1999 problems
The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.
In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.
During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-15
- VIN: 1ZWFT61L2X5
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: YES, I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN JULY OF 2017. WHEN I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE, EVERYTHING SEEMED PERFECTLY FINE. YET, THE DAY I RECEIVED IT, I WENT TO THE GAS STATION TO FILL UP. UPON RETURNING HOME, 1 MILE., THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS TOLD BY THE SELLER ALL WAS PERFECTLY FINE. DRIVE THE CAR, IT WILL BE FINE. I WAS CONCERNED AND I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC. AFTER RUNNING SOME DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A CATALYIC CONVERTER, REPAIRS OVER $1500.00. I WAS READING THE RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND CAME ACROSS CAMPAIGN ID# NHTSA 04V421000. THE RECALL WAS FOR CONTAMINATION OF THE FILTER I THE FUEL DELIVERY MODE(FDM) CAN REDUCE AND EVENTUALLY BLOCK, THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE. IN WHICH, CAN CAUSE MANY PROBLEMS. I HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. UPON STARTING, IT REVIVES UP, THEN EVENTUALLY SLOWS DOWN AND ALMOST KILLS. IT SOUNDS AS IF NO GAS IS GETTING TO THE ENGINE. LOSS OF POWER, STALLING. MY QUESTION IS HOW I COULD FIND OUT IF THIS RECALL WAS DONE TO THE VEHICLE. WHERE DO I START. I REALIZE ITS BEEN MORE THAN 10YEARS FROM THE PURCHASE OF IT NEW, AND I DIDN'T PURCHASE NEW, BUT IF THE RECALL WASN'T DONE...MAY I BE ENTITLED? THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 68,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE. IS THIS THE PROBLEM AND HAS IT NOW EFFECTED THE CATALYIC CONVERTER? THANKS GREATLY FOR YOUR PRECIOUS TIME. A REPLY WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-04-16
- VIN: 1ZWFT61L9X5
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: (MANAGEMENT) I WAS DRIVING ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AND WAS HONKED AT BY ANOTHER DRIVER WHO TOLD ME THAT MY BRAKES LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING. I HAD A FRIEND OF MINE THAT IS A CERTIFIED REPAIR PERSON LOOK AT IT AND HE SAID IT WASN'T THE LIGHT OR THE FUSE OR THE BRAKE SWITCH UNDER THE PEDAL AND THAT HE WAS 95% SURE IT WAS THE STOP LAMP EXTENSION HARNESS THAT HAS BRONZE TERMINALS AT THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH CONNECTOR. I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN 2004 AND UNDER A RECALL HAD THE BLOWER SWITCH RESISTOR REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL. THE REASON THE RECALLS FOR THIS CAR ARE NOT SHOWING UP IS BECAUSE THE RECALLS ARE MORE THAN 15 YEARS OLD & THEY DON'T KEEP TRACK AFTER THAT. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR BEFORE BUT I HAVE HAD OVER $9,000 WORTH OF REPAIRS ON IT SINCE I'VE OWNED IT NOT INCLUDING THE NORMAL OIL CHANGES AND TUNE UP. I THINK FORD NEEDS TO APPROVE THIS FOR THE RECALL CONSIDERING THEY KNEW HOW MANY THINGS WERE WRONG WITH THE COUGARS AND THAT'S WHY THEY DON'T MAKE THEM ANYMORE... NOT A SATISFIED CUSTOMER WITH A FORD PRODUCT! FIRST & LAST FORD PRODUCT I WILL EVER OWN IF THIS ISN'T FIXED TO MY SATISFACTION. THANK-YOU, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

I JUST INSTALLED A BRAND NEW BATTERY JUST 6 DAYS BEFORE INCIDENT, ALTHOUGH THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE RAINING. THIS TIME IT WAS EXTREMELY SCARY DUE TO THE HIGH SPEED I WAS DRIVING AND BECAUSE THE HEAT STOPPED WORKING MY WINDOWS STARTED TO FOG UP QUICKLY CAUSING MY VISIBILITY TO BE REDUCED DRAMATICALLY WHILE TRYING TO USE ALL MY STRENGTH TO STEER THE CAR AROUND A CURVE WITHOUT HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE. AS SOON AS I WAS ABLE TO SEE AN EXIT I GOT OFF FREEWAY AND CAR DIED COMPLETELY DRIVING UP THE OFF RAMP. THANK GOD THERE WASN'T ANY VEHICLES BEHIND ME I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AFTER WAITING ABOUT HALF HOUR CAR STARTED BACK UP, POWER STEERING & HEAT WAS BACK ON. I've been driving my Cougar for three years now and it's been a great ride. I did have a minor issue with the sunroof cables snapping during normal operation in its third year, but thankfully a private mechanic was able to repair it for a reasonable price. Other than that, I haven't had a single problem with the car. It's a joy to drive, comfortable for a sports coupe, and always turns heads with its sleek appearance. The only downside is that other drivers seem to be jealous of its sporty look and often try to race me on the road!

The 4 cyl. engine is incredibly reliable. In fact, this same engine has proven to be dependable in other platforms too. I've really put this car through its paces, and it's still going strong. It could use a tune-up at this point in its life, but I've had it since mile 4 and it's been an amazing car.

I got this car as my first car and it has been great so far! Although I had to fix the neutral safety switch for $100 and I'm currently getting new motor mounts for $450, I'm excited to add a new cold air intake and cat back exhaust. The car runs smoothly and has great grip, with tight steering. Even with 167,000 miles on it, it still runs like a dream!

I recently acquired a car and have only encountered two minor issues thus far. Firstly, the doors are sagging and require complete hinge replacements instead of just pins. Secondly, the sun/moonroof clips have broken and locating replacement parts has proven to be a challenge. Despite these minor setbacks, my Cougar has an impressive 200,650 miles on it and still runs like a dream thanks to its powerful five-speed V6 engine. I plan on putting many more miles on this reliable vehicle and who knows, maybe I'll even hit the 300k mark!

I purchased this car used with 108,000 miles on it. My '99 Sable had just given up with 220,000 miles on it, so I thought another Mercury would be good for commuting to college. Since then, I have driven it for 31,000 miles without any issues. It has ample power, except for a slight lag between 3-4000 rpms, but at 4000 rpms, it accelerates quickly. The 4-speed automatic transmission is impressive, and it can reach 115 mph in third gear at 6000 rpms, which is remarkable for a 175 horsepower V6 engine. Additionally, the gas mileage is excellent. I can get 33mpg on a trip if I drive reasonably, but it drops to about 24mpg if I put my foot down.

I have experienced multiple issues with this car, including three fuel pump failures and a starter replacement. The car's performance is not up to my expectations of a sports car, as it feels sluggish on take-off. Overall, I am extremely dissatisfied with this car.

I'm so glad to hear that you were able to get rid of your Cougar! It sounds like you had a really tough time with it. The radio had to be replaced three times and still doesn't work, the windows leaked, the windshield had to be replaced, the dashboard squeaked, and the alternator had to be replaced, not to mention all the factory recalls. It must have been frustrating to have to bring it back to the dealer 13 times in just one year.

I bought this car during my freshman year of college after my brother totaled my beloved 1991 Lexus ES250. I needed a car to commute to and from work and to make the 400-mile trek home once a month. Although the car looks great and has a banging stereo, I have spent almost the $6500 I paid for it on repairs. Beware of the sunroof, as the parts alone to fix it cost $1600! Also, performance-wise, there seems to be a gap in the middle gears. It's great off the line, but it struggles to get up to freeway speeds on an onramp. The A/C unit doesn't cool very well and seriously hampers the engine's power at freeway speeds. Beware of the repair costs for this unreliable vehicle.

I've owned my Cougar for 3 years and unfortunately have had to spend close to $5000 in repairs. Despite reaching out to Ford customer service for financial assistance, I did not receive the support I was hoping for. The radio has malfunctioned three times, and the last time it burnt through the left channel, damaging the entire system. I decided not to replace it due to the high cost of $600. I have experienced several issues with this vehicle, including problems with the power window regulators, alternator, catalytic converter, wheel bearings, starter, power hatch release, radio, sensors, and more. Overall, I have not been satisfied with this car. I would recommend considering other options before purchasing a Cougar.

I have invested a significant amount of money into this car, despite it having only 45k miles. The transmission required replacement at 40k, followed by the alternator at 43k. Currently, I am dealing with brake issues. However, I am researching reviews on Edmunds to determine if trading in the car is a viable option. I am confident that I will make the best decision for my situation.
