1995 Mercury Cougar problems
The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.
In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.
During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

Common 1995 Mercury Cougar problems
The Mercury Cougar 1995 is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most common issues is a battery light due to a damaged alternator wire harness connector. This problem occurs when the alternator wire harness connector becomes damaged, causing the battery light to come on. This issue can be resolved by replacing the damaged connector with a new one.
Another common problem with the 1995 Mercury Cougar is the engine stalling out randomly. This issue can be frustrating for owners, as the car will stall out at red lights and will not restart for a few minutes. Even after taking the car to a Mercury dealer, the problem remains unresolved, with no codes stored or any obvious issues under the hood. The cause of this problem is still unknown, and no definitive solution has been found.
The 1995 Mercury Cougar can also have electrical issues, such as a blown maxi fuse. This issue can occur when attempting to replace the stereo, resulting in the car being unable to shift out of park. The problem can be resolved by checking the owners manual for the location of the fuses, checking the fusible links under the hood, and ensuring that the battery cable is disconnected before attempting the stereo replacement.
Additionally, the 1995 Mercury Cougar can have engine trouble, such as spitting and sputtering under acceleration when the engine is under 2000 RPMs. This issue can be caused by a bad sensor, such as the O2 sensors, or by the coil packs being out of spec. The problem can be resolved by checking the sensors and coil packs and replacing them if necessary.
In summary, the 1995 Mercury Cougar has several common problems, including a battery light due to a damaged alternator wire harness connector, engine stalling out randomly, electrical issues, and engine trouble. These issues can be frustrating for owners, but they can be resolved with the right knowledge and tools.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-08-01
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS THESE PEOPLE THAT HAVE ALL POSTED INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET. NOW I HAVE TAKE MY CAR INTO MULTIPLE PLACES TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RESOLVED, AND NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I THINK SINCE SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM THAT IT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM, BUT A PROBLEM THAT MERCURY AS A COMPANY NEEDS TO FIX. I AM HAVING AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH MY VAN NOT STARTING. IT IS A 1993 MERCURY VILLAGER. ON SATURDAY AFTER DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR WITH MULTIPLE STOPS WHERE I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WENT INTO A STORE, IT WOULD NOT START. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY EVERY SINGLE LIGHT CAME ON, SEAT BELT, CHECK ENGINE, IT SEEMED LIKE 7 OR 8 IN ALL. THERE WAS NOTHING. WE TRIED JUMPING IT, BUT THAT DID NOT DO ANYTHING. LATER THAT DAY SOMEONE TOLD ME IT SOUNDED TO HIM LIKE IT WASN'T IN PARK OR AT LEAST THE CAR DIDN'T THINK IT WAS IN PARK. I TRIED STARTING IT AGAIN AFTER DEPRESSING THE BRAKE, TURNING TO ON AND MOVING FROM PARK TO NEUTRAL THEN BACK TO PARK. IT STARTED UP JUST LIKE ALWAYS. I DROVE AROUND AND MADE 2 STOPS. THE FIRST TIME IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP, THE SECOND TIME IT WOULDN'T START, BUT AFTER MOVING IT TO NEUTRAL AND BACK TO PARK IT STARTED RIGHT UP. AFTER A TOTAL DRIVING TIME OF ABOUT 35 - 40 MINUTES I ARRIVED HOME. ABOUT 20 MINUTES LATER I WENT OUT TO START THE CAR AND GOT NOTHING. THIS TIME THE NEUTRAL TO PARK TRICK DID NOT WORK. I TRIED NUMEROUS TIME OVER THE COURSE OF AN HOUR WITH NO LUCK. HAVE A 1997 VILLAGER WITH 130K ON IT. THE VAN HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE UNTIL TWO DAYS AGO. I WENT OUT TO START IT AND IT SPITS, SPUTTERS, BACKFIRES AND DIES. *TR

- VIN: 1MELM62W7SH
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: ONE DAY I WENT OUT TO MY CAR TO GO TO WORK AND THERE WAS A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE APPARENT. I PROCEEDED TO START MY CAR AND FOUND IT SLOW TO START THOUGH IT DID START UP AFTER A BIT.THAT EVENING AFTER WORK AGAIN THERE WAS A GAS SMELL AND AGAIN IT TOOK LONGER TO FIRE UP.UPON ARRIVING HOME THERE WAS A BIG WET SPOT ON MY GARAGE FLOOR WHICH WAS OBVIOUSLY GASOLINE AND AT WORK THE NEXT DAY ANOTHER PUDDLE OF GAS WHERE I NORMALLY PARK. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY REPAIR FACILITY WHERE THEY TOLD ME MY FUEL LINES HAD WORN THROUGH [CHAFED] IF YOU WILL BY IMPROPER INSTALLATION. BEING THE FUEL SYSTEM IS UNDER PRESSURE AND THE LINE WORE THROUGH THIS IS THE REASON THE CAR STARTED SLOWER THAN NORMAL ANDWHY THERE WAS A GASOLINE SMELL.LUCKILY THIS FAILURE DIDN'T CAUSE A FIRE IN MY CAR ESPECIALLY SINCE IT WAS IN MY GARAGE THOUGH THE MECHANIC SAID IT COULD HAVE. THE FUEL TANK HAD TO BE REMOVED AND REINSTALLED ALONG WITH THE PURCHASE AND REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE FUEL LINES FROM THE FUEL TANK TO THE ENGINE AT AN UNNECESSARY EXPENSE TO ME. I READ A CONSUMER REPORTS ARTICLE ABOUT RECALLS FOR 92 -93 MERCURY COUGARS AND ANOTHER ONE FOR 97 COUGARS AND AM REPORTING THIS SAME PROBLEM ON MY 1995 COUGAR.*AK

I have a white 1995 Cougar XR-7 with a V8 engine, which I bought brand new. She's been with me for over 15 years now and although she's had a few problems recently, she's been a great car that I absolutely love! Her looks are awesome and even a small change like the grill in '96 took away some of her great looks. It's amazing how much a tiny change can affect the total look of a car. She's been the best car I've ever owned and I wish they would bring her back, looking exactly like the '95 model with no changes on the exterior. Go Ford (or Mercury - haha)!

I bought my cougar five years ago for $1000. It had 150k miles on it and I only had to make minimal repairs since then. I put at least another 50k miles on it (the mile meter eventually broke, but it didn't affect the drivability) until it eventually died a few months ago. I drove it back and forth to work, and all over the country for 5 fun years, only replacing the alternator, battery, brake pads and tires. The driver door handle eventually broke on both sides, but again, it still drove like a champ. If you can find one with a decent amount of miles on it, I definitely recommend buying it. I'm not sure I will ever find a car that I love as much as her.

If you're looking for a powerful engine, the 4.6 V8 is definitely the way to go. While some may prefer the V6, I personally find the V8 to be more reliable and easier to maintain. By keeping up with regular maintenance, you can ensure that your car runs smoothly for years to come. Don't skimp on maintenance and you'll be able to fully enjoy your car!
-
I really love this car! It handles great, although the V6 is a little underpowered, but that's to be expected. Recently, my high school changed the oil in it and now I'm looking at a 4.6L 95 Cougar. The V8 has just the right amount of power for the size of the car.

This is exactly what a luxury sport coupe should be! At high speeds, it performs without any problems and is VERY quiet. The driver's console is ergonomically designed, and everything is within easy reach. Although there have been some issues with the car, such as the use of Aluminum heads on a steel engine block, which can cause problems with the head gasket, the cost to repair the head gaskets is about as high as a complete engine rebuild. Additionally, my transmission is in need of being rebuilt or replaced. Despite these issues, the car has been a pleasure to drive.

I really appreciate the way this car looks and rides, although I have experienced some issues with the head gaskets and transmission. Despite these setbacks, I still hold the car in high regard. Although, I do wish I had the v8.
