Mercury Cougar problems

The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.

In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.

During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

Common Mercury Cougar problems

The 1999 Mercury Cougar is known for several problems that have affected its sales and customer satisfaction. The most significant issues are related to the engine and electrical system. The car features a 2.5-liter Duratec V-6 engine, which has stopping and starting issues, leading to rough runs and frequent stalls. This makes the car less satisfying and less safe, especially at stoplights.

The electrical system of the 1999 Mercury Cougar is also problematic. The engine often shuts off while the car is in motion, leading to the car getting stuck, which is a significant safety problem. This issue can be dangerous, especially if the car is in heavy traffic or on a busy road.

Another problem with the 1999 Mercury Cougar is that the car's fuel readings are often incorrect, leading to inefficient and costly fuel consumption. This issue can be frustrating for drivers, who may not realize that they are wasting fuel.

The 1999 Mercury Cougar's heating control system is also faulty, causing discomfort for the driver. The car's heating and AC system can be quite expensive to fix, leading to heightened customer frustration.

The 1999 Mercury Cougar is also expensive to fix, with the average cost of fixing its issues being around $4,500. This cost is mainly due to engine and electrical issues, which are often the most expensive components to fix.

The car's interior also has issues, with the cup holder and center console shaking, causing annoyance for customers. The 1999 Mercury Cougar's lumbar support is also severely lacking, leading to back discomfort for drivers who sit for long periods. The maximum mileage expectancy of the car is also low, at around 82,000 miles, making it less durable than other cars in its class.

In summary, the 1999 Mercury Cougar has several significant issues related to the engine, electrical system, fuel readings, heating control system, and interior. These problems have affected customer satisfaction and sales of the car, making it less desirable than other cars in its class.

What year of Mercury Cougar to avoid?

The Cougar has 2 generations, each with their own issues. Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 8th generation (1999–2002).

Is the Mercury Cougar a good car?

Mercury Cougar Ratings Overview

The average rating is a 3.8 out of 5 stars.

What year Cougar is the most desirable?

The 1967 and 1968 Cougar GT is even rarer, as just 11,959 units were built those years. These Cougar GTs came with powerful 390-V8 engines under the hood and we're good looking cars. However, the most rare is the 1968 GT-E version, where either a 427, 390 horse V8 or a 428 Cobra Jet 335 horse engine sat in waiting.

What does xr7 mean on a Mercury Cougar?

It's been suggested that "XR-7" is a cipher for "experimental racing," and there was, in fact, a team of Cougars prepared by NASCAR specialist Bud Moore for drivers Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones to compete in the 1967 Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Trans-Am road-racing championship.

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-15
  • Date Complaint: 2017-12-12
  • VIN: 1ZWFT61L2X5
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: YES, I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN JULY OF 2017. WHEN I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE, EVERYTHING SEEMED PERFECTLY FINE. YET, THE DAY I RECEIVED IT, I WENT TO THE GAS STATION TO FILL UP. UPON RETURNING HOME, 1 MILE., THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS TOLD BY THE SELLER ALL WAS PERFECTLY FINE. DRIVE THE CAR, IT WILL BE FINE. I WAS CONCERNED AND I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC. AFTER RUNNING SOME DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A CATALYIC CONVERTER, REPAIRS OVER $1500.00. I WAS READING THE RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND CAME ACROSS CAMPAIGN ID# NHTSA 04V421000. THE RECALL WAS FOR CONTAMINATION OF THE FILTER I THE FUEL DELIVERY MODE(FDM) CAN REDUCE AND EVENTUALLY BLOCK, THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE. IN WHICH, CAN CAUSE MANY PROBLEMS. I HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. UPON STARTING, IT REVIVES UP, THEN EVENTUALLY SLOWS DOWN AND ALMOST KILLS. IT SOUNDS AS IF NO GAS IS GETTING TO THE ENGINE. LOSS OF POWER, STALLING. MY QUESTION IS HOW I COULD FIND OUT IF THIS RECALL WAS DONE TO THE VEHICLE. WHERE DO I START. I REALIZE ITS BEEN MORE THAN 10YEARS FROM THE PURCHASE OF IT NEW, AND I DIDN'T PURCHASE NEW, BUT IF THE RECALL WASN'T DONE...MAY I BE ENTITLED? THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 68,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE. IS THIS THE PROBLEM AND HAS IT NOW EFFECTED THE CATALYIC CONVERTER? THANKS GREATLY FOR YOUR PRECIOUS TIME. A REPLY WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED. I've owned this car for some time and have kept it well-maintained. However, there are a couple of things to note. Firstly, the comfort of this car is not great as you can feel every bump on the road. Secondly, it's not the best car to drive in snowy or icy conditions as it can be quite dangerous. Despite these issues, I have found this car to be reliable over the years, with the only problem I've encountered being the fuel pump. Overall, I would not recommend buying this car.

I had a 3.8L V6 Auto. When I got the car, it had already been used. Although the interior components were cheap, the leather seats were nice. However, there were a lot of squeaks and rattles, and the car had a lot of body roll and little stability in turns. The engine would have been better suited for a compact car, as it felt like a dog was pulling this car. The mileage was okay for the size of the machine. Unfortunately, the radio quality was poor. On the bright side, there were no electrical issues. However, the car was terrible in snow. I remember driving this 1993 Cougar and comparing it to my Dad's 1994 Sable. The Sable had the same motor and transmission, but it felt much quicker. The Sable also had a nicer dashboard, roof liner, and A, B, and C pillar covering. Additionally, the Sable rode much more smoothly. The FWD in the Sable made it a much better candidate for driving in the snow.

I bought this car used as my very first car. Although I loved it at first, it now has 153k miles and I don't feel safe driving it anymore. Unfortunately, I've had to replace many parts, including more tires than usual, 4 alternators, 2 transmissions, transmission and engine mounts, many batteries, and the power window motor twice. Additionally, the trunk no longer stays open on its own and the check engine light won't go off, even though dealers have checked numerous times. The lights also have a film over them. While it looks nice and breaks great, it's just not worth the trouble.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Cougar V6. When I first bought it, I was really happy with it. However, lately I've noticed that it's developing some rattles and some pieces of weather-proofing trim have come off. The rear brakes are also groaning and I've had some issues with the transmission bolts coming loose. Additionally, the CD player starts skipping after about three hours of continuous play. I take good care of my car and I don't drive it too hard, so I was surprised to see these issues arise. After reading Consumer Report's review of the Cougar this year, where Cougar owners rated it as much worse than average for reliability, I'm starting to worry about the future of my car. I hope things improve, but I wanted to share my experience with you.

The transmission needs to be rebuilt as it has been slipping since it was brand new. Unfortunately, the spoiler broke 3 years ago and is no longer available. Additionally, the head gasket is blown, despite regular oil changes and service, and it has never been used for towing. I have been quoted $700 at the dealership to replace a couple of sensors, which seems a bit steep. The diagnostics alone cost $93, with an additional $140 for compression diagnostic. As I should have remembered before purchasing, it is just a shinier FORD - Fix Or Repair Daily. On the bright side, I also own a 1967 Ford Mustang which has proven to be reliable, built before American automotive manufacturers forgot how to build a decent, reliable car.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it from my grandpa with 108k and now have 168k. The only things I have replaced besides normal maintenance are the fuel pump and starter. While it may not be the fastest car out there with only 140 hp, the low end torque makes normal driving quite easy. City mileage is not the best, but if you drive conservatively on the highway, you can get 27-28 mpg. Winter driving can be tricky, but I found that adding one or two sandbags makes a world of difference! I have heard that the 3.8 had some head gasket issues, but luckily I haven't experienced them (although I may still have a leak because my temp gauge can be fidgety sometimes, even after changing the thermostat). Regardless, I wouldn't hesitate to drive it long distances. Let me know if you have any questions!

Your 99 Mercury Cougar V6 Automatic sounds like an amazing car! It's impressive that it has lasted for 10 years and still going strong with 155k miles. The interior still looks close to new, which is a testament to how well built and sturdy it is. It's great to hear that it has been reliable and never left you stranded. Regular maintenance such as oil changes, tires, and brakes have kept it in top shape. It's no wonder people are surprised when you tell them how old it is. It's definitely the perfect first car for a new driver. I can understand why you're sad to be trading it in for something newer next month.

I bought my Cougar in 2003 with 19,000 miles on it. Since then, I have put 88,000 miles on it and have had to spend about $2,000 on repairs. But to me, it's worth it because I get compliments all the time on how cool it looks. I've had to replace the computer, brakes, and most recently, the coil. I was having some issues with surging and missing when I accelerated, and my mechanic couldn't figure out what was wrong. After some research, I found out that the fuel module had been recalled in 2004 and was eligible for replacement until October 2011. It was then that the serviceman told me that the coil was causing the

In fact, I love it so much that I am about to trade it in for a brand new one! I have never had any problems with my 2000 Cougar. It has been a fun and reliable car for me. I am looking to buy the 2002 Anniversary Special real soon! So, you can go ahead and look up my little Blue trade-in and get yourself a really good car!

I knew from the first day that it was a lemon, when the speedometer broke and my tire blew out. Despite numerous visits to the service shop over the past year due to the car stopping while driving, with no warning at all, the issue persists. Whether on the highway or on streets, it just turns off. Regrettably, I did not read these reviews before purchasing the car. However, I am confident that I will find a solution to this problem.
