Mercury Cougar problems

The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.
In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.
During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

Common Mercury Cougar problems
The 1999 Mercury Cougar is known for several problems that have affected its sales and customer satisfaction. The most significant issues are related to the engine and electrical system. The car features a 2.5-liter Duratec V-6 engine, which has stopping and starting issues, leading to rough runs and frequent stalls. This makes the car less satisfying and less safe, especially at stoplights.
The electrical system of the 1999 Mercury Cougar is also problematic. The engine often shuts off while the car is in motion, leading to the car getting stuck, which is a significant safety problem. This issue can be dangerous, especially if the car is in heavy traffic or on a busy road.
Another problem with the 1999 Mercury Cougar is that the car's fuel readings are often incorrect, leading to inefficient and costly fuel consumption. This issue can be frustrating for drivers, who may not realize that they are wasting fuel.
The 1999 Mercury Cougar's heating control system is also faulty, causing discomfort for the driver. The car's heating and AC system can be quite expensive to fix, leading to heightened customer frustration.
The 1999 Mercury Cougar is also expensive to fix, with the average cost of fixing its issues being around $4,500. This cost is mainly due to engine and electrical issues, which are often the most expensive components to fix.
The car's interior also has issues, with the cup holder and center console shaking, causing annoyance for customers. The 1999 Mercury Cougar's lumbar support is also severely lacking, leading to back discomfort for drivers who sit for long periods. The maximum mileage expectancy of the car is also low, at around 82,000 miles, making it less durable than other cars in its class.
In summary, the 1999 Mercury Cougar has several significant issues related to the engine, electrical system, fuel readings, heating control system, and interior. These problems have affected customer satisfaction and sales of the car, making it less desirable than other cars in its class.
What year of Mercury Cougar to avoid?
The Cougar has 2 generations, each with their own issues. Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 8th generation (1999–2002).
Is the Mercury Cougar a good car?
Mercury Cougar Ratings Overview
The average rating is a 3.8 out of 5 stars.
What year Cougar is the most desirable?
The 1967 and 1968 Cougar GT is even rarer, as just 11,959 units were built those years. These Cougar GTs came with powerful 390-V8 engines under the hood and we're good looking cars. However, the most rare is the 1968 GT-E version, where either a 427, 390 horse V8 or a 428 Cobra Jet 335 horse engine sat in waiting.
What does xr7 mean on a Mercury Cougar?
It's been suggested that "XR-7" is a cipher for "experimental racing," and there was, in fact, a team of Cougars prepared by NASCAR specialist Bud Moore for drivers Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones to compete in the 1967 Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Trans-Am road-racing championship.

- Date Complaint: 2017-12-12
- VIN: 1ZWFT61L2X5
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: YES, I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN JULY OF 2017. WHEN I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE, EVERYTHING SEEMED PERFECTLY FINE. YET, THE DAY I RECEIVED IT, I WENT TO THE GAS STATION TO FILL UP. UPON RETURNING HOME, 1 MILE., THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS TOLD BY THE SELLER ALL WAS PERFECTLY FINE. DRIVE THE CAR, IT WILL BE FINE. I WAS CONCERNED AND I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC. AFTER RUNNING SOME DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A CATALYIC CONVERTER, REPAIRS OVER $1500.00. I WAS READING THE RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND CAME ACROSS CAMPAIGN ID# NHTSA 04V421000. THE RECALL WAS FOR CONTAMINATION OF THE FILTER I THE FUEL DELIVERY MODE(FDM) CAN REDUCE AND EVENTUALLY BLOCK, THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE. IN WHICH, CAN CAUSE MANY PROBLEMS. I HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. UPON STARTING, IT REVIVES UP, THEN EVENTUALLY SLOWS DOWN AND ALMOST KILLS. IT SOUNDS AS IF NO GAS IS GETTING TO THE ENGINE. LOSS OF POWER, STALLING. MY QUESTION IS HOW I COULD FIND OUT IF THIS RECALL WAS DONE TO THE VEHICLE. WHERE DO I START. I REALIZE ITS BEEN MORE THAN 10YEARS FROM THE PURCHASE OF IT NEW, AND I DIDN'T PURCHASE NEW, BUT IF THE RECALL WASN'T DONE...MAY I BE ENTITLED? THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 68,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE. IS THIS THE PROBLEM AND HAS IT NOW EFFECTED THE CATALYIC CONVERTER? THANKS GREATLY FOR YOUR PRECIOUS TIME. A REPLY WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED. Hi there! I just wanted to share with you that I bought my 90 Cougar on Christmas Eve of 1992 from my local Mercury dealership. The original owner was amazing, she bought a new cougar every 2 years! I was only 17 at the time, but I still remember how excited I was. I have all the records from her, and she had all the work done at the dealership. I've only had one problem with it, and that was when the head gasket went out after 189,000 miles. But don't worry, a new engine was the fix and now it runs great!

I bought my Cougar privately in May 2002. The vehicle had only 15,000km and was like new. It was accident-free and excellently maintained. I have had very few problems with this vehicle in the last 4 years, although I did have to replace the tires quite early in its life. However, my new tires are better than the originals. The Cougar gains momentum quickly into its takeoff, although it could have used a bit more power. The styling is great, and there is more than enough interior space for the 2 front passengers. The car had huge potential, and it's a huge shame its life has ended. Overall, it's a great car.

You made a great choice getting your Cougar! It's been over a year and you haven't had any problems, that's amazing! The car sounds like a lot of fun to drive, especially with the easy shifting manual transmission and great handling around corners. It's great to hear that the 2000 model year has improved from the previous year's problems. You definitely made a good decision getting a car that runs well and looks great. Thanks for sharing your experience!

What a great find! I was lucky enough to acquire this '90 Cougar from a neighbor for just $2000 back in June 1999. Although the 3.8L V-6 engine blew its head gasket at 50K miles, I was able to get it repaired for only $1000, essentially rebuilding the engine. Since then, I haven't had any problems with it. Even during the coldest NY winters, the Cougar starts right up and runs smoothly. It still gets an impressive 30 MPG on the highway, and the ride is as comfortable as a cloud. I haven't even had to replace the tires in 50K miles, and there are no rattles. While I've had to do some maintenance work on the brakes, the vehicle is almost 17 years old and everything still works perfectly. If it weren't for the rusting doors and rocker panels, I could see myself driving this car forever!

If your car has considerable miles on it and you haven't experienced any major problems yet, it might be wise to consider selling it now. The head gaskets on my car blew at around 100K miles, and from there on, it was one minor issue after another. It's possible that you could end up spending more money on repairs than the car is worth.

I got my 1999 Mercury Cougar about a year ago and I'm really happy with it. I chose it mainly for its gas mileage and it hasn't disappointed me. I've only had to replace the tires and battery due to normal wear and tear. When I bought it, it had 115k miles on it and now, a year later, it has 140k miles. Despite the mileage, I have no major complaints about it. It's fast and has a really sporty look, making it a great car for both men and women. In fact, it would make a great first car!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my '94 Mercury Special Edition Cougar XR7 with a six cylinder engine. When I first got it with about 60k miles on it, it looked and worked great! However, after only 20,000 miles, it blew a head gasket. I usually do 99% of my own work, but I decided to take it to a professional mechanic for this one and he did a good job from all I can tell. Looking back, I forgot to mention that the car was rear-ended soon after its purchase and the other guy's insurance company wanted to total it out. I protested and decided to keep it, but maybe that was a hasty decision. Since then, there have been some leaks from the driveline, but I suspect that's because the mechanic changed the motor mounts without disconnecting the driveline. Despite these issues, I've always enjoyed driving it on the open road, but not so much around town. It corners like a champ and has the tightest turning circle of any car I've ever driven. The mirrors are great and it was very reliable up to about 100,000 miles. However, it has had some problems, big and small, ever since. For example, the oil dipstick holder broke off and unfortunately, it cannot be replaced without pulling the entire engine, which the Ford folks told me is an $800 job! Can you believe that? I had to pass on that one, which shouldn't be too much of a problem except that the lube and oil folks look at me like I must be very lax in the maintenance of such a nice car. Overall, it's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I still have a soft spot for my Cougar.I've had a few issues with my car recently. The odometer stopped working and I had to replace the entire instrument cluster to get it functioning again. The radiator, alternator, serpentine belt, idler pulley, and front disc brakes have all needed replacing at some point. I've also had some coolant leaks and issues with the power windows. It's been a bit frustrating, but I'm hopeful that everything will be sorted out soon. I do miss the simplicity of older cars though, where you could easily see what was going on under the chassis.Who cares if the attic is unusable and gets too hot in the summer? It's just asking for a fire to start and destroy everything you own. The same goes for using plastic bags at the market. It's illogical to use so many bags for just a few items. Instead, why not just put everything in the trunk without any bags? I vaguely remember a time when the US was something to be proud of, but those days seem to be fading. Maybe the US was always a sad joke, but who knows. We continue to make mistakes, like these new cars that lack style and are overpriced. At least my '94 Cougar has some actual style. But I guess we can't stop

I have a 2001 ZN. Although I loved the style and look of the car when I first got it, I have unfortunately experienced a number of issues. After a major motor tap at 20,000 miles, the motor was replaced, but it was a hassle to get it sorted. Two weeks later, the transmission went, and two months after that, I lost 2nd gear and had to have the transmission rebuilt. Currently, at 36,000 miles, the car hesitates through all the gears and I can't go over 3000 RPM without it bucking and hesitating. While I am disappointed with the issues I have faced, I am confident that they can be resolved. I look forward to finding a solution and enjoying my car once again.

I have been the proud owner of my Cougar for two years now, but I have decided that it's time to sell it. While it has served me well, it's time for me to move on. I have had to do some repairs on the car, including getting new tires, a whole new braking system, new shocks, and a few other expensive things done to the motor. Unfortunately, the transmission is slipping, the struts are going bad, the passenger window is breaking, and it's starting to rust. The radio could also use an upgrade. Currently, my car is in the shop for a blockage that is causing it to overheat, but I know that it could be worse. After all, it is a '99 with 122,222 miles on it and it had been in a previous accident. Despite its issues, I know that someone else will be able to appreciate it for what it is.
