Mercury Cougar problems

The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.

In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.

During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

Common Mercury Cougar problems

The 1999 Mercury Cougar is known for several problems that have affected its sales and customer satisfaction. The most significant issues are related to the engine and electrical system. The car features a 2.5-liter Duratec V-6 engine, which has stopping and starting issues, leading to rough runs and frequent stalls. This makes the car less satisfying and less safe, especially at stoplights.

The electrical system of the 1999 Mercury Cougar is also problematic. The engine often shuts off while the car is in motion, leading to the car getting stuck, which is a significant safety problem. This issue can be dangerous, especially if the car is in heavy traffic or on a busy road.

Another problem with the 1999 Mercury Cougar is that the car's fuel readings are often incorrect, leading to inefficient and costly fuel consumption. This issue can be frustrating for drivers, who may not realize that they are wasting fuel.

The 1999 Mercury Cougar's heating control system is also faulty, causing discomfort for the driver. The car's heating and AC system can be quite expensive to fix, leading to heightened customer frustration.

The 1999 Mercury Cougar is also expensive to fix, with the average cost of fixing its issues being around $4,500. This cost is mainly due to engine and electrical issues, which are often the most expensive components to fix.

The car's interior also has issues, with the cup holder and center console shaking, causing annoyance for customers. The 1999 Mercury Cougar's lumbar support is also severely lacking, leading to back discomfort for drivers who sit for long periods. The maximum mileage expectancy of the car is also low, at around 82,000 miles, making it less durable than other cars in its class.

In summary, the 1999 Mercury Cougar has several significant issues related to the engine, electrical system, fuel readings, heating control system, and interior. These problems have affected customer satisfaction and sales of the car, making it less desirable than other cars in its class.

What year of Mercury Cougar to avoid?

The Cougar has 2 generations, each with their own issues. Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 8th generation (1999–2002).

Is the Mercury Cougar a good car?

Mercury Cougar Ratings Overview

The average rating is a 3.8 out of 5 stars.

What year Cougar is the most desirable?

The 1967 and 1968 Cougar GT is even rarer, as just 11,959 units were built those years. These Cougar GTs came with powerful 390-V8 engines under the hood and we're good looking cars. However, the most rare is the 1968 GT-E version, where either a 427, 390 horse V8 or a 428 Cobra Jet 335 horse engine sat in waiting.

What does xr7 mean on a Mercury Cougar?

It's been suggested that "XR-7" is a cipher for "experimental racing," and there was, in fact, a team of Cougars prepared by NASCAR specialist Bud Moore for drivers Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones to compete in the 1967 Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Trans-Am road-racing championship.

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-15
  • Date Complaint: 2017-12-12
  • VIN: 1ZWFT61L2X5
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: YES, I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN JULY OF 2017. WHEN I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE, EVERYTHING SEEMED PERFECTLY FINE. YET, THE DAY I RECEIVED IT, I WENT TO THE GAS STATION TO FILL UP. UPON RETURNING HOME, 1 MILE., THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS TOLD BY THE SELLER ALL WAS PERFECTLY FINE. DRIVE THE CAR, IT WILL BE FINE. I WAS CONCERNED AND I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC. AFTER RUNNING SOME DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A CATALYIC CONVERTER, REPAIRS OVER $1500.00. I WAS READING THE RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND CAME ACROSS CAMPAIGN ID# NHTSA 04V421000. THE RECALL WAS FOR CONTAMINATION OF THE FILTER I THE FUEL DELIVERY MODE(FDM) CAN REDUCE AND EVENTUALLY BLOCK, THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE. IN WHICH, CAN CAUSE MANY PROBLEMS. I HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. UPON STARTING, IT REVIVES UP, THEN EVENTUALLY SLOWS DOWN AND ALMOST KILLS. IT SOUNDS AS IF NO GAS IS GETTING TO THE ENGINE. LOSS OF POWER, STALLING. MY QUESTION IS HOW I COULD FIND OUT IF THIS RECALL WAS DONE TO THE VEHICLE. WHERE DO I START. I REALIZE ITS BEEN MORE THAN 10YEARS FROM THE PURCHASE OF IT NEW, AND I DIDN'T PURCHASE NEW, BUT IF THE RECALL WASN'T DONE...MAY I BE ENTITLED? THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 68,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE. IS THIS THE PROBLEM AND HAS IT NOW EFFECTED THE CATALYIC CONVERTER? THANKS GREATLY FOR YOUR PRECIOUS TIME. A REPLY WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED. I bought this car used as my very first car. Although I loved it at first, it now has 153k miles and I don't feel safe driving it anymore. Unfortunately, I've had to replace many parts, including more tires than usual, 4 alternators, 2 transmissions, transmission and engine mounts, many batteries, and the power window motor twice. Additionally, the trunk no longer stays open on its own and the check engine light won't go off, even though dealers have checked numerous times. The lights also have a film over them. While it looks nice and breaks great, it's just not worth the trouble.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Cougar V6. When I first bought it, I was really happy with it. However, lately I've noticed that it's developing some rattles and some pieces of weather-proofing trim have come off. The rear brakes are also groaning and I've had some issues with the transmission bolts coming loose. Additionally, the CD player starts skipping after about three hours of continuous play. I take good care of my car and I don't drive it too hard, so I was surprised to see these issues arise. After reading Consumer Report's review of the Cougar this year, where Cougar owners rated it as much worse than average for reliability, I'm starting to worry about the future of my car. I hope things improve, but I wanted to share my experience with you.

The transmission needs to be rebuilt as it has been slipping since it was brand new. Unfortunately, the spoiler broke 3 years ago and is no longer available. Additionally, the head gasket is blown, despite regular oil changes and service, and it has never been used for towing. I have been quoted $700 at the dealership to replace a couple of sensors, which seems a bit steep. The diagnostics alone cost $93, with an additional $140 for compression diagnostic. As I should have remembered before purchasing, it is just a shinier FORD - Fix Or Repair Daily. On the bright side, I also own a 1967 Ford Mustang which has proven to be reliable, built before American automotive manufacturers forgot how to build a decent, reliable car.

This vehicle has had multiple issues, including the need to replace 3 alternators, frequent tire replacements, and necessary repairs to the transmission electrical system and engine wiring. Additionally, the seat does not adjust properly and the trunk does not open automatically. It is recommended that potential buyers thoroughly research this vehicle and read reviews before making a purchase.

True, this vehicle may be a blast to drive, but the design quality of this car could use some improvement. Unfortunately, I had a fuel injector go out about a month after I bought the car, which was disappointing. Additionally, the body molding, especially on the front bumper, seems to have been put together poorly. There were also a few recalls that were involved. As a consumer, I would expect better quality and reliability from a new model.

VEHICLE: This is a 1994 Mercury Cougar XR7 with a 3.8L V6 (231.4ci) engine that produces 140 hp. It features Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection, EEC-IV, 4 Speed Auto Trans (Electronic Auto Overdrive), Disc Front & Drum Rear Brakes, and Preferred Equip Pkg. 260A. I acquired this car from a close relative who purchased it new. I always admired how it handled, its power (for a V6), and its looks. I even worked on it a couple of times. It has always been garage kept in Southern Nevada, so the body has virtually no rust and the paint looks great. When I purchased the car (mileage 69k), I assumed it only needed some hoses and general maintenance. However, when I started it up, rusty water (not coolant) was pouring out of a busted heater hose. It turned out that another relative ran the engine with no coolant, causing it to drastically overheat. As a result, the Head Gasket was blown and the No. 2 & 3 plugs had a mixture of oil and water. When I drained the oil, it was a murky grey showing water was throughout the oil system. At this point, I removed the heads and found that a couple of the cylinder walls were scored. I then decided to remove the block and took it to the local machine shop for an overhaul (short block). They found that one ring on the No.3 cylinder was literally welded onto the piston from extreme overheating and couldn't be removed. I was impressed that an engine that had that much internal damage actually ran. The block was magnafluxed (no cracks), crank turned, cam polished, .020Anything related to the drivetrain has been either overhauled or replaced, including the radiator, water pump, heater core, fuel injectors, fuel pump, rear differential, sensors, and transmission. Suspension components such as bushings, front and rear end kit, shocks, and struts have also been replaced. All major wire harnesses have been checked and rewrapped, and a keyless and security system has been installed. The interior is in good shape and just needs detailing, except for the driver's seat which needs to be reupholstered due to normal wear. New carpeting is also being installed. I found a rear spoiler (a factory option) in the same color, which I am installing. I estimate that when I am finished, I will have spent around $6,000, not including my labor/time. The only thing that disappoints me is that I can't find a proper rear brake conversion kit to have disc brakes front and back. Although Ford doesn't manufacture most parts for this car anymore, I have found good deals on quality parts from aftermarket manufacturers online. Some people might think that what I am putting into this car isn't worth it. While it's true that this car can't compare with the value of a fully restored '67 Cougar, I believe that this generation Cougar has good lines and was designed well (coming from a primary GM guy). The primary mechanics of the car are identical to the same year(s) as the T-Bird. There were many built, maybe too many during those years. The bottom line for me is that there are going to be issues with almost any car, but I feel that the '94 Cougar overall can be a dependable vehicle as long as proper maintenance is kept up on it.

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your 2002 Anniversary edition! Despite differing opinions, you've had a positive experience with your car, having put 8k miles on it with no problems. It's impressive that you've managed to get such great gas mileage, even after driving 250 miles at 75 mph. Although the back seat may not be suitable for taller individuals, it's still very roomy and comfortable for a 2dr car. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It's amazing that you've been able to drive over 100,000 miles with no major repairs. The only issue you had was with the transmission at 90,000 miles, but that was due to a defective torque converter that was recalled by the factory. Overall, it sounds like your car is very reliable, rides nicely, and handles great. Thanks for sharing your experience!

The Ford V8 is truly an exceptional car. It strikes the perfect balance between sport and luxury, with a suspension that is both smooth and powerful. I have personally owned one and can attest to its incredible performance and reliability. It is simply the best car out there!

I love this car! Bought in '00 off of a lease.Never had one problem (beside manifold blowing up on christmas eve!- Recall i didn't know about!) Otherwise a beautiful car with great handling, acceleration and comfortability. I baby this car and can get a new car-but why? Eats a lot of gas but what can you ask of a v8. I wish they still made this model. I lucked out on this 30th anniversary edition it even came with tint! I do go through a lot of brakes...
