2014 Bmw I3 problems
The BMW i3 is an electric car that was manufactured by German marque BMW from 2013 to 2022. The i3 was BMW's first mass-produced zero emissions vehicle and was launched as part of BMW's electric vehicle BMW i sub-brand. It is a B-segment, high-roof hatchback with an electric powertrain. It uses rear-wheel drive via a single-speed transmission and an underfloor lithium-ion battery pack with an optional range-extending petrol engine.
Styled by Richard Kim, the i3 is a five-door with a passenger module of high strength, ultra-lightweight carbon fibre reinforced polymer adhered to an aluminium chassis, battery, drive system and powertrain. The body features two clamshell rear-hinged rear doors.
The i3 debuted as a concept at the 2011 International Motor Show Germany, and production began in September 2013 in Leipzig.
It ranked third amongst electric cars sold worldwide from 2014 to 2016. Its global sales totaled 250,000 units by the end of 2022. Germany was its biggest market with over 47,500 units delivered through December 2021, followed by the U.S. with over 45,000.
The i3 won two World Car of the Year Awards, selected as 2014 World Green Car of the Year and as 2014 World Car Design of the Year. The i3 received an iF Product Design Gold Award, and won UK Car of the Year 2014 and Best Supermini of 2014 in the first UK Car of the Year Awards.

Common 2014 Bmw I3 problems
The BMW i3, introduced in 2014, is an innovative electric vehicle with a unique design and features. However, like any other car, it has some common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most common problems across the BMW i3 range is the 12-volt battery, which tends to fail prematurely, usually around every three years
. This can leave drivers stranded, as a failing battery will prevent the car from turning on. It is recommended to replace the battery before it fails completely.
Another issue that affects both the BMW i3 and the BMW i3 REX is the fuel tank ventilation line, which can wear down and cause a vapor leak in some models produced between July 2014 and November 2016
. This issue was addressed through a recall, and affected vehicles had a notice sent to the owner for rectification.
The BMW i3 REX also has specific problems related to its range-extender engine. For instance, the fuel door can be prone to failure, and the high-voltage battery can overheat, posing a fire risk in some vehicles produced between October 2018 and August 2021
In addition to these issues, the BMW i3 has faced criticism for its build quality, with some owners reporting problems with rattling trim, faulty charge doors, and high-voltage battery failure
. The car's suspension has also been a source of complaints, with some owners reporting squeaking noises caused by worn-out top mounts or aging front shock absorbers
Electrical problems are also common in the BMW i3, with some owners reporting issues with seat heaters, charging ports, and the car's 12-volt battery for auxiliary power failing prematurely
. These issues can be particularly frustrating for drivers, as they can affect the car's overall functionality and usability.
Overall, while the BMW i3 is an innovative and unique electric vehicle, it is not without its problems. Owners have reported a range of issues, from premature battery failure to faulty charge doors and high-voltage battery problems. However, with proper maintenance and regular inspections, many of these issues can be prevented or addressed before they become major problems.
How long will a 2014 BMW i3 battery last?
All of the i3's battery options have an estimated 15-year lifespan ( longer than most people own a single car), but that doesn't take into account detrimental charging and driving habits that can tax an EV battery pack's charge capabilities.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-06
- VIN: WBY1Z4C59EV
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The carbon fiber roof is delaminating and a portion of it came off and hit the front windshield of another car, causing them to partially lose control of their vehicle almost causing an accident. This is a known issue BMW has not taken an action to resolve it. I’m afraid that a larger chunk may hit somebody’s car and cause a severe accident.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
- VIN: WBY1Z4C57EV
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: A large portion of the car's hood (carbon laminate?) has ripped off and is surely to continue to tear and fly off while driving.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-13
- VIN: WBY1Z4C5XEV
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When the vehicle depletes it's battery and switches over to the range extender or the gas engine, the car will suddenly shut off and a drivetrain error appears. This seems to only happen when the car is traveling over 55 mph. This has happened on repeated occasions. If you then leave the car sit for several minutes and then turn it back on, it is driveable as long as it is driven under 55 mph. Since this only happens at higher speeds, it's been extremely dangerous because other cars are also traveling at high speeds and this has happened once on a freeway where the speed limit was 70 mph. If there's no shoulder to guide the car onto when this happens, the car would be disabled on the road because it will not drive again right away. I've taken it in to fix and the mechanic said it was a software update that was needed. However, the problem happened again a few months later. There was no warning before this happened both times it occurred.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-23
- VIN: WBY1Z4C59EV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: AC Compressor for the car battery system failed. There was a check engine light that was on steady, but not flashing. The electric range in the car reduced by 20 to 30% as a result of this fault. It was brought into the BMW dealership for inspection and they determined that was a short in the AC compressor and that the whole AC compressor system would need to be replaced; compressor, lines and radiatorx2 (battery radiator also needed). This was because this typical failure causes metal filings to enter the cooling system and it's not recommended to flush it out. There were no prior warnings or noise leading up to the problem. I'm concerned that there is a high risk that further driving the vehicle or charging it could cause a battery failure and cause it to catch on fire since there is no cooling. Normally a flashing engine light means to stop driving immediately, but there was no flashing light only a steady light. The BWM system check menu reported no issue with the car! The repair bill for this is about $8,400 and is rediculous. This seems to be a common problem when you start searching for it. Seems to also happen to the BMW i8 which shares the same compressor. Note that there are several revisions to the ac compressor part number which seems to suggest that they had to keep changing the part as production went on but did not notify affected cars that they could have a serious problem. This shouldn't be happening at 77k miles.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-10
- VIN: WBY1Z4C5XEV
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I am writing to bring to your attention a persistent issue I have been facing with my 2014 BMW i3, VIN: [XXX] . Unfortunately, I have been experiencing an airbag and/or seatbelt alert problem identified as "Driver Restraint System Malfunction" with the error code 930904 displayed on the dashboard. I have attached supporting documentation, including images and information from the BMW Service Bulletin, which clearly outlines that the error code 930904 is a known and routine problem for my specific vehicle model, thus a Service Bulletin was issued by BMW, as you can see attached from BMW’s website. It has come to my attention, through online forums and discussions within the BMW i3 community, that others have successfully resolved this issue under the terms of the service bulletin, but for some reason I keep getting the runaround. Regrettably, despite my efforts to address this matter with BMW USA on three separate occasions since October 2023, I have not received a satisfactory resolution. Instead, I have been redirected to BMW Authorized Dealerships, where I am faced with unjustifiable diagnostic fees and repair costs. It is perplexing to me that other members of the BMW community have had their issues resolved under the service bulletin at no cost, while I am being subjected to unnecessary expenses. To provide you with a clear overview: 1. The error code 930904 is documented in the BMW Service Bulletin for my 2014 BMW i3 REX. 2. Other BMW i3 owners have successfully had this issue resolved under warranty through the service bulletin. 3. BMW USA and its authorized dealerships have been uncooperative in acknowledging and addressing this known issue. I visited my local BMW dealership in Rochester, NY, on 10-10-23, only to be informed that they could not locate the referenced code and insisted on charging me a diagnostic fee and an additional $1,800 for the repair. Are you kidding me? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
- VIN: WBY1Z4C5XEV
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: I am writing regarding an ongoing issue I am having with BMW North America and their dealerships concerning a faulty airbag in my 2014 BMW i3 electric vehicle (VIN #: [XXX] ). On multiple occasions in October 2023, BMW North America informed me that the "Driver Restraint System Malfunction" alert in my vehicle could be repaired under a Service Action extension (code SIB010818/DC3234908400) that covers airbag issues in vehicles under 10 years old and 100,000 miles. See pictures of the issue/alert on dash attached. However, when I brought my vehicle to two local BMW dealerships (in Rochester and Syracuse, NY), they either claimed the Service Action code did not exist or that I would need to pay a diagnostic fee of $250 AND $1,800 to fix the airbag and seatbelt issue out of pocket, despite BMW North America saying this should be covered. As a disabled person on a fixed income, I cannot afford to gamble hundreds of dollars on diagnostic fees when BMW North America has already provided the Service Action code that should cover the necessary airbag repair. This is not only a financial burden but a safety concern, as I am being forced to drive a vehicle with a known airbag defect. I am reaching out to request your help resolving this issue with BMW as this issue with my BMW i3 is VERY routine and all over the internet and the BMW i3 forums as BMW clearly failed its very basic duties in protecting USA consumers with this vehicle and its numerous issues. Airbags and seatbelts are NOT issues consumers should have to gamble with due to the failures of BMW in properly producing a vehicle that would avoid such serious problems as clearly prevalent to a lot of owners of this make and model. I look forward to your assistance in this urgent matter. Please let me know if you need any additional information from me. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-24
- VIN: WBY1Z2C52EV
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: While driving through a parking lot at slow speeds on 6/24/2023 around 6:30 pm in Phoenix AZ, I noticed the steering felt very heavy and the car pulled hard to the left. While driving slowly down a driveway, I checked the air pressure data and found all 4 tires at recommended levels. I drove 15 miles to my home below the speed limit while wrestling with the steering wheel, thinking that the power to the steering system had somehow failed. Some quick online research upon my return revealed that this problem is not unusual, but can be resolved by turning the car off and then back on again. Following this procedure solved the issue, but leaves me with uncertainty as to when it may happen again.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-18
- VIN: WBY1Z4C53EV

STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-11
- VIN: WBY1Z2C56EV
- Components: STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased my 2014 BMW i3 from Canada in 2019. It was imported from the U.S and still is registered in the U.S. I brought it into the BMW dealership in Vancouver BC shortly after to do a vehicle inspection. At that time, the dealer printed out a list of defect codes/recalls. It also said that they were done and marked "yes" completed. Fast forward to 2022, I bring my car into the same dealer and they said there is a recall not completed to replace the convenience charging electronics KLE and that they would fix for free. My car was not starting and we thought it could have caused the issue. They also noted at that time that the engine mount screws are now split and need to be replaced. I then discovered it was part of an open recall but when I asked about this, they said the recall closed in 2016 and I would now be responsible to replace this part for $3400+ even though it was a known defective BMW part. Upon further research, the initial part replaced was deemed not good enough and the part was upgraded to aluminum (it is currently a plastic mount bracket). I have tried requesting again for them to complete the recall work but they said they told me: " Yes, there was a recall but it was completed in 2016 in san fran by the looks of it. (<--I don't think it was actually completed) "I can't claim it since its done unfortunately... there is no way for me to claim this to you either as the repairs done more than 2 years ago and the car is out of warrant for 4 years. So BMW will just see it as just wear and tear. I tried to see of any ways I could assist you but there isn't a way for me to claim this with BMW" So my issue, and why I am writing you is that they claim the part has been completed but it has not, it is still the original bracket and screw mount. Plus they admitted they still needed to replace the charging electronics when this was apparently also marked as completed. I suspect someone lied about the recall work being done in San Francisco.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-06
- VIN: wby1z4c54ev
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Car had all warning light came on one day. We brought to a local dealer and they told me it was due to 12V battery was not charging. 1. I asked to a service rep if 12V battery could be issue w/o full diagnostic which they charged me extra. He said they needed to do it to figure out. 2. After replacing the battery, it still had error message. After a few days, I was told car needs software update to clear error message related 12V battery. I requested this should be repaired by BMW or their dealers without any cost to me, but rep told me it was not free. I don't simply understand why consumer is responsible for paying to repair software defect.

- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,WHEELS
- Summary: THE LEFT BRACKET FOR THE ELECTRIC ENGINE IS CRACKED AND THE DEALER WANTS SUBSTANTIALLY MORE FOR A REPLACEMENT ONE WHICH HAPPENS TO BE COMPLETELY REDESIGNED FROM A CHEAP PLASTIC PART WHICH EQUIPS MY CAR TO A MORE STUDY AND IMPROVED ONE FOR THE LATEST MODELS OF THE SAME MAKE. AS I DID SOME RESEARCH THE SAME ISSUE WAS SUBJECTED TO A FORMAL SAFETY RECALL IN EUROPE. HERE MY WARRANTY EXPIRED SO THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME A HEFTY FEE FOR WHAT IS BASICALLY A REPAIR TO A MANUFACTURER'S RECOGNIZED DESIGN FLAW. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED AS MANY OWNERS OF THIS CAR WILL NOT REPAIR THIS ISSUE WHICH CAN BE FAILED TO BE IDENTIFIED OR WILL BALK AT THE PRICE TAG OF THE CHANGE. IF THE BRACKET FAILS THE WHOLE ENGINE AND DRIVESHAFT WILL DROP AND INTERFERE WITH REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE CATASTROPHIC LOSS OF CONTROL. THE REPLACEMENT BRACKET IS ALUMINIUM VS THE ORIGINAL ONE IN PLASTIC SO THEY ARE TRYING TO QUICKLY SWEEP THIS DESIGN FLAW UNDER THE RUG. THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC CRASHES OF THIS TYPE OF CAR IN THE PAST DUE TO IT BUT CROSSING MY FINGERS IT DIDN'T HAPPEN. THE PICTURES I INCLUDE SHOW WHERE THE REPLACEMENT NEEDS TO HAPPEN. #3 IS WHERE THE CRACK IS AND I ALSO HAVE A VIDEO I CAN SUBMIT IF NEEDED.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-20
- VIN: WBY1Z2C57EV
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME WITHOUT WARNING TO ME OR OTHER OWNERS OF SIMILAR VEHICLES PUTTING MY SAFETY AND OTHER'S SAFETY AT GREAT RISK. ON MAY 20, 2020, I WAS STOPPED ON A RED LIGHT AT NECKEL RD TO CROSS HIGHWAY 86 IN IMPERIAL CA. WHEN IT TURNED GREEN, I RELEASED THE BREAK PEDAL AND NORMALLY ACCELERATED. SUDDENLY MY VEHICLE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAY 86 AND PUT ITSELF IN THE PARK POSITION SHOWING "DRIVE TRAIN FAULT" ALARM. IT STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAR'S TRAFFIC AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO SHIFT IT TO NEUTRAL POSITION TO MOVE IT OUT OF THE WAY. WITH VEHICLES TRAFFIC MOVING AROUND ME, I TURN MY CAR OFF AND ON THREE TIMES, WITH ABOUT TEN SECONDS IN BETWEEN OFF AN ON, BEFORE THE ALARM WOULD RESET. ONCE THE ALARM CLEARED, I ABORTED MY SHORT TRIP AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT BACK HOME SAFELY BUT I AM CONCERN THIS MAY HAPPEN AGAIN AT ANY TIME AT HIGHER SPEEDS PUTTING MY SAFETY AND OTHERS' SAFETY AT RISK. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF OTHER HAVE REPORTED SIMILAR ISSUES / COMPLAINS WITH THIS VEHICLES AND WHAT IS BMW DOING ABOUT IT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. *TR
POWER TRAIN,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-04-17
- VIN: WBY1Z4C54EV
- Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS
- Summary: WHEN THE DRIVETRAIN FAILURE LIGHT COMES ON, THE MOTOR FAILS, THEN LOCKS UP IN PARK. YOU CONNOT THEN PUT IT IN NEUTRAL TO GET IT OFF THE ROAD. EVEN THE TOWTRUCK NEEDS DOLLIES TO GET REAR WHEELS OFF THE GROUND. THIS HAPPENED TWICE WHILE STATIONARY, AND SEVERAL TIMES ON THE ROAD. IF I HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO ROLL TO SHOULDER, IT COULD HAVE CREATED AN ACCIDENT. THERE SHOULD BE A WAY TO GET TO ZNEUTRAL.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-10-17
- VIN: WBY1Z4C50EV
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN AND WHEN I ACCELERATED THE REAR OF THE CAR FELT LIKE IT GOT REAR ENDED. I WALKED AROUND THE CAR, NOTHING WAS WRONG. IT DROVE FINE UP TO 40 MPH, THEN ON THE HIGHWAY, IT MADE A RRRR SOUND. THE NEXT DAY I FOUND OUT THAT THE ENGINE MOUNT BOLT SNAPPED.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-19
- VIN: WBY1Z2C5XEV
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: WHILE PULLING ONTO THE ROAD MY CAR STARTED PULLING STRONGLY TOWARDS THE LEFT AND WAS VERY HARD TO STEER. IT HAD VERY HEAVY DIFFICULT STEERING. IT FELT ABSOLUTELY DIFFERENT THAN ANYTHING I'VE FELT IN THE TWO YEARS OF OWNERSHIP. I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND 'GOOGLED' I3 DIFFICULT STEERING AND CAME ACROSS MULTIPLE FORUM POSTS AND DISCUSSION OF THIS ISSUE. IT APPEARS THE I3 POWER STEERING CAN RANDOMLY STOP WORKING AND THEN RETURNS WITH AN IGNITION CYCLE. I LOCKED THE CAR, WENT IN A STORE FOR 5 MINUTES, AND NORMAL STEERING RESUMED WHEN I DROVE AWAY. ONE BECOMES USED TO THE WAY THEIR CAR DRIVES WHEN THEY DRIVE IT EVERY DAY. WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE STEERING CHANGES DRASTICALLY IT SEEMS IT CAN BE AN ALARMING AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

I really enjoy driving my BMW i3 Hybrid car. It's a smart car that gets about 109 miles combo, with around 65 miles electric. It's perfect for driving around town and I've even taken it out of town and felt safe. Although it's a two-door car, it's great for personal use. I park it in my garage and charge it up when needed. The AC works perfectly and keeps me cool, even in the hot Las Vegas weather. I made sure to check that it has a Mercedes engine before purchasing it, and I always service it at the BMW dealership. The cost of service is reasonable, with oil changes costing about $200, but since I mainly use electric, I don't need them as often. I'm already looking forward to purchasing the next one and upgrading, even though I've only driven this one for about 45,000 miles so far. The seats are also very comfortable, which is great for when I take my two large dogs to the vet.

The i3 is currently the most efficient option on the market, and it's also the lightest EV thanks to CFRP. With a battery of 22kWh, it's only drivable with 19Wh, but I can easily get 4mi/kWh. While the VW eGolf is nice, it's not a fair comparison to the i3's acceleration. On the other hand, the MB B Class is too heavy and lacks a DC FC option. In comfort mode, the i3 can be driven like an ultimate driving machine, while in Eco Pro or Eco Pro +, it can be driven with efficiency. For long trips, it's important to plan ahead. In my experience, I've driven 1300 miles in a month and the total cost to charge was only $25 (with some free charging stations available). It's also worth noting that there is no gasoline tax.

This is a great car for commuting in the city, especially for 1 or 2 people. While it may not have the best range in cold weather, it's still a reliable option with the Range Extender. It's important to note that it's not meant for high-speed driving, but it handles well in stop-and-go traffic. The car's unique style and technology make it stand out, and the electric mileage is impressive. The only downsides are the stiff ride and sensitive steering, as well as the lack of a heated steering wheel. Additionally, the suicide doors may not be everyone's cup of tea. However, the car's great visibility and attention-grabbing design make up for it. It's worth noting that the warranty service at BMW Motowerks is exceptional, but it's important to be cautious once the car is out of warranty.

I've been driving this car for 8 months and have covered 7700 miles so far. It's been running okay, but driving it on deep snow has been a huge challenge and almost impossible to control. On a single charge, I can go up to 80 miles in summer and around 60 miles in winter. I installed a 240V, 32Amp, ClipperCreek charger and have had no problems at all - it charges the car within 3.5 hours from empty to full. I got a great deal on the lease - only 280/month with taxes for 12k miles per year. However, I have noticed some uneven tire wear, with the rear tires being more affected than the front ones. I didn't expect the tires to last 60k miles, but I did hope for at least 20-25k miles. The dealership stated that this is

Hey there! I wanted to let you know that I've had some issues with this car in the past. I've experienced warning lights coming on pretty frequently, and I've had to deal with the engine light four times now. Additionally, I've heard that some people have had trouble with flat tires, which can be pretty expensive to replace. Finally, I've found that the handling can be a bit like a golf cart. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

I was shocked to discover that the rear tires of my new I3, which I purchased two and a half months ago, had completely lost their tread, to the point where the steel wires were showing. Despite experiencing wobbling and shakiness from day one, even at speeds of 25-40 mph, the dealership dismissed my concerns, claiming that this was normal for a car with small tires. Unfortunately, my friends who also own this car have had similar tire issues within six months. It is clear that improvements need to be made to the I3's tire design and I am disappointed with my overall experience.

I recently purchased a car that I was really excited about. However, when I got it home, I realized that it would take 20 hours to charge fully, which was longer than I expected. Additionally, the car only ran for about 100 miles on a single charge. I was disappointed to learn that the BMW chargers cost around $6,000 and that other chargers could potentially damage the car's system. Due to these unexpected costs, my partner and I decided to return the car. Unfortunately, on our way back to the dealership, we experienced a blown tire which was a bit of a setback. We learned that tire insurance is a good investment, especially since the low profile of the tires means they don't last very long. Although this experience was frustrating, I am grateful for the lessons learned and will take them into consideration for future purchases.
