2005 Mazda Tribute problems
The Mazda Tribute (Japanese: マツダ・トリビュート, Matsuda Toribyūto) (Code J14) is a compact SUV made by Japanese automaker Mazda from 2000 to 2011. It was jointly developed with Ford Motor Company and based on the front-wheel drive Mazda 626 platform, which was in turn the basis for the similar Ford Escape on the CD2 platform. The Tribute was priced below the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner in Ford's CD2 SUV lineup.
The Tribute and Escape debuted in 2000, offering front- or all-wheel drive and a choice of a transversely mounted 2.0 L Ford Zetec 4-cylinder engine or 3.0 L Ford Duratec V6. The Ford Escape was also sold as the Ford Maverick in Europe with a Ford 2.0 L I4 Zeta engine with manual transmission, or 3.0 L Duratec coupled to automatic transmission.
One main difference between the Tribute and the Ford Escape/Maverick is that the Tribute's suspension is tuned for a firmer ride than the Escape/Maverick, in order to correspond with Mazda's sporty image. As Mazda had offered "spiced up" models in other segments such as the Mazda3 and CX-7, the utilitarian Tribute was replaced by the more aggressively styled and in-house-designed Mazda CX-5 in North America.

Common 2005 Mazda Tribute problems
The 2005 Mazda Tribute has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and transmission. These issues have been reported by owners and documented on platforms like CarComplaints.com.
- Transmission Failure: The 2005 Mazda Tribute has had multiple reports of transmission failure, with an average cost to fix around $2,300 and an average mileage of 103,000 miles. This issue is a serious concern as the transmission is crucial for the vehicle's operation.
- Wheel Well Area Completely Rusted Out: This is the most reported problem for the 2005 Mazda Tribute, indicating a significant issue with rusting in the wheel well area. This issue may not directly affect the vehicle's performance but can lead to further problems if not addressed.
- Struts Rusting Before They Should Be Rusting: The 2005 Tribute, in particular, has had a serious issue with its struts rusting before they should be rusting. This can lead to costly repairs, with an average cost of around $1,000 to fix this problem.
- Engine Issues: The engine of the 2005 Mazda Tribute has been reported to have issues that can cause the car to stall while driving or accelerate out of control. For instance, the 2006 Tribute had a lot of speed control issues that caused three crashes and one injury.
These issues, particularly the transmission failure and engine problems, can be serious and costly to repair. If considering a 2005 Mazda Tribute, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider the potential costs of repairs.
What are the most common problems of Mazda Tribute?
The most common fault we have found is the failure of ignition coils (COP- coil on plug). This coil failure may be due to either the age of unit or premature failure as a result of air leaks causing coils to overload and oil leaks causing contamination of spark plug tubes.
How many miles will a 2005 Mazda Tribute last?
200k miles
The engine/trans still has a lot of life left but the chassis it self doesn't. If you can find a cheap v6 tribute that isn't rusted, it will get you to point a-b hassle free & with the proper maintenance will last 200k miles like mine!!!

Are Mazda Tribute good SUVS?
In its favor, it has handsome exterior styling, a choice of a powerful four-cylinder or V6 engine and top-notch safety scores. But the Tribute also has a number of small failings, and overall they add up to keep this SUV from truly matching other competitors. Number one on the list is an outdated interior.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
- VIN: 4F2CZ96195K
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The rear wheel well was completely rusted out while the other side is fine. The shock broke loose causing the vehicle to drop down. I have a 17 year old that is not an experienced driver and this could have resulted in her getting seriously hurt. From what I read they recalled the vehicle to to 2004 and I don’t understand why they did not recall this one. They should have and this is a serious safety issue. Does someone have to die before they see that this needs to be fixed?
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-30
- VIN: 4F2YZ02Z25K
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: owned since day one, bought brand new, religiously maintained, perfect shape other than completely rusted wheel house back left passenger side. Shock went through rusted area all the way to trunk. Mazda recalled models 2003 to 2004 for this problem yet so many 2005 Mazda Tribute owners are having exact problem especially when manufactured in 2004! This is serious and I had my granddaughter with me when this happened and yet Mazda wants to do nothing about it when it’s a serious hazard and ongoing problem with the 2005’s. It is always the back passenger side with this problem! I have no money to purchase a car and now my lifeline to support my family is broke!
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-02
- VIN: 4f2yz02z75k
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The passenger side rear wheel well has rusted out and the brake mount is deteriorating as well affecting the safety of the vehicle. I have been told that this is a common issue on Mazda Tribute and Ford Escape models for the years 2001-2005 by my mechanic as well as Mazda dealer reps. They stated the 2001-2004 models were recalled but not the 2005. However, t hey mentioned that these should likely have been recalled as well. One would think that if you take care of your car that the components of the frame should not rust out.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-03-05
- VIN: 4F2YZ02Z95K
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have found several complaints on the 2005 Mazda Tribute with the rear wheel well rusting out. Mazda did a recall on the 2004 but not the 2005. I previously had to replace the rear wheel in 2018 and it now needs replaced again due to rusting. With the number of complaints I have read, along with the outrageous cost to repair, I do not understand why Mazda, nor the NHTSA have done anything about this. A recall NEEDS to be issued ASAP.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-17
- VIN: 4F2CZ04185K
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The wheel well rusted out, completely leaving the shock tower and stability of the car at risk, rusted out completely, I'm a light backyard mechanic and I've seen the Ford do the same . The repair is almost the value of the car, and unless you trust them your basically buying a new vehicle, because while you're there may change the set of shock's and absorber that's about 700. To include. This car had a rumor of being as good as the Everlasting Santa Fe, and Toyota 4runner. Vehicle is in pristine shape aside from the fatal rust.. recall recall recall recall

I HAD TO APPLY A GREAT DEAL OF FORCE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO SLOW THE VEHICLE ENOUGH TO GET IT OFF THE ROAD. I SHIFTED THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV UNCONTROLLABLY. I TURNED THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF AND OPENED THE HOOD TO INVESTIGATE. THE THROTTLE CABLE ON THE CRUISE CONTROL SERVO HAD ROTATED UP TO ABOUT A 30-DEGREE ANGLE AND HAD THE THROTTLE HELD OPEN. I ROTATED THE CABLE BACK DOWN TO ITS NORMAL POSITION AND THE THROTTLE SNAPPED FREE. I WILL NOT USE THE CRUISE CONTROL AGAIN UNTIL THE ISSUE IS RESOLVED. I WAS TRAVELING AT 65 MPH WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO OVER 80 MPH WHILE I WAS TRYING TO GET IT UNDER CONTROL. *TR
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-01
- VIN: 4F2CZ961555
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR WHEEL WELL HAS RUSTED OUT SUCH THAT THE SUSPENSION IS NOW PROTRUDING INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS DISCOVERED WHEN REGULAR RATTLING FROM THE AREA PROGRESSED INTO LOUD BANGS WITH EACH BUMP. THE MECHANIC WHO DISCOVERED STATED THAT THE RUST WAS ABNORMAL, EVEN FOR THE GEOGRAPHIC AREA, AND THAT NONE OF THE OTHER WHEEL WELLS EXHIBITED ANY SIGNS OF RUSTING. HE STATED IT WAS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND THAT THIS CONDITION WAS MOST LIKELY THE RESULT OF SOME SORT OF MANUFACTURING DEFECT (AS OPPOSED TO REGULAR AND EXPECTED OXIDATION).
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-08-01
- VIN: 4F2CZ94155K
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: MY 2005 MAZDA TRIBUTE HAS BEEN TAKEN VERY GOOD CARE OF SINCE IT WAS BOUGHT NEW. THE CAR HAS BEEN RUST PROOFED SEVERAL TIMES, SERVICED REGULARLY AND ALWAYS WASHED AND WAXED SEVERAL TIMES, AND BEYOND, SINCE OWNERSHIP. THAT BEING SAID, MY 2005 VEHICLE LOOKS QUITE IMMACULATE FOR ITS AGE, EXCEPT FOR THE EVER-INCREASING SEVERE RUST ISSUE ON THE RIGHT REAR RIGHT WHEEL WELL, WHICH I HAVW TRIED TO FIX, AND KEEP UP ON, BUT HAS NOW RUSTED RIGHT THROUGH, AND CAUSED THE SHOCK TO PROTRUDE INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. NOW MY MECHANIC CLAIMS HE CANNOT SERVICE MY VEHICLE FOR ANYTHING ELSE (EVEN THOUGH THE SERVICE ISSUES I NEED TO ADDRESS ARE IMPORTANT AND CRITICAL TO THE USE OF MY VEHICLE. I AM NOW IN A PREDICAMENT, SINCE THE COST TO REPAIR THIS DAMAGE IS VERY HIGH, SO HIGH, IT EXCEEDS THE CURRENT VALUE OF THE VEHICLE, AND I AM ENRAGED THAT MAZDA HAS NOT TAKEN ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THIS CLEAR FACTORY DEFECT. I SAY A CLEAR FACTORY DEFECT, SINCE THIS EXACT ISSUE WAS ADDRESSED, AND RECALLED, IN THE SAME VEHICLE FOR YEARS 2001-2004, BUT NOT FOR 2005. IN ADDITION, I HAVE MET SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME VEHICLE WHO HAVE/ARE EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE, REGARDLESS OF HOW WELL THEY HAVE MAINTAINED THEIR VEHCILE. MOREOVER, I CAN FIND THE EXACT SAME ISSUE FOR THIS VEHICLE ON ENDLESS WEBSITES ONLINE, HUNDREDS, MORE ACCURATELY, THOUSANDS OF TIMES! FOR MAZDA TO STILL NOT HAVE RECALLED THIS ISSUE IS UNFAIR, RIDICULOUS AND VERY WRONG TO LOYAL MAZDA CUSTOMERS. I AM NOW STUCK WITH A VEHICLE I CANNOT DRIVE DUE TO A REPAIR I CANNOT AFFORD, BUT A REPAIR THAT I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE TIME, MONEY, MAINTENANCE AND CARE IVE PUT INTO THE OWNERSHIP OF MY CAR. IN ADDITION, THIS ISSUE IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AND COULD EASILY CAUSE HARM TO A PERSON DRIVING THIS VEHICLE, A PASSENGER, OR EVEN AN INNOCENT PEDESTRIAN WHEN POPPING THROUGH THE FLOOR, OR AT ANY OTHER STAGE OF WEARING.

- Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 2005 MAZDA TRIBUTE ON A PAVED CITY STREET, I NOTICED A SUDDEN LOUD CLANKING/POUNDING IN THE PASSENGER SIDE, REAR WHEEL WELL AREA. ASSUMED IT WAS A BAD SHOCK BUT SOON DISCOVERED THAT THE THE WHEEL WELL HAD RUSTED COMPLETELY OUT, THERE IS NOW A HOLE TO THE INSIDE OF MY CAR. SOME, BUT NOT MUCH RUST ELSEWHERE ON THE VEHICLE (THE OTHER THREE WHEEL WELLS LOOK GREAT), BUT THAT PART OF THE VEHICLE RUSTED THROUGH TO THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. NOT DRIVEABLE ANYMORE UNTIL THIS IS ADDRESSED. THE VEHICLE ITSELF IS VERY MECHANICALLY SOUND AND WILL CARED FOR. THERE ARE LOTS OF EXAMPLES ON ONLINE FORUMS OF THIS EXACT ISSUE, ON BOTH TRIBUTES AND FORD ESCAPES. APPARENTLY THERE IS A RECALL FOR THESE VEHICLES 01-04, BUT NO FURTHER. EXACT SAME ISSUE, EXACT SAME WHEEL WELL. PLEASE HELP!

UPON INSPECTION, THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR SHOCK MOUNT IN THE WHEEL WELL WAS COMPLETELY BROKEN FREE AND THE SHOCK BANGING AROUND. IT HAD PINCHED THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND THEY STOPPED WORKING AS WELL. UPON RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET THIS HAS BEEN A COMMON ISSUE WITH FORD ESCAPES AND MAZDA TRIBUTES OF THIS VINTAGE BUT ONLY ON THE RIGHT REAR. SO MUCH SO COMPANIES LIKE DORMAN MAKE A REPLACEMENT PART FOR IT TO REPLACE THE WHEEL WELL WHICH REQUIRES WELDING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD ADDRESS. NEVER HAD THIS HAPPENED TO ANY OTHER VEHICLE.

2005 Mazda Tribute recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2005 Mazda Tribute.
- Manufacturer: Timken Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
- Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.
- Manufacturer: MAZDA NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: Mazda is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2006, and 2008, Tribute vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
- Consequence: A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. Remedy parts are now available. The safety recall began on September 13, 2012. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500, option #6.
- Manufacturer: MAZDA MOTOR CORP
- Components: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:HEAD RESTRAINT

DURING TESTING, THE FREE MOTION HEAD FORM REGISTERED A MEASUREMENT ABOVE THE PERMITTED LIMIT AT THE LEFT HAND A-PILLAR TRIM AREA.
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH, PERSONAL INJURY TO OCCUPANTS MAY OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MAKE MODIFICATIONS TO THE ENERGY ABSORBING MATERIAL LOCATED ABOVE THE HEADLINER IN THE AFFECTED AREA FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 31, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MAZDA AT 1-800-222-5500.
- Manufacturer: MAZDA NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:LOCK

THE REAR LIFTGATE LATCHING SYSTEM DOES NOT MEET THE INERTIA LOAD REQUIREMENT IN ONE DIRECTION.
- Consequence: IF THE LIFTGATE IS LEFT UNLOCKED, THERE IS THE POTENTIAL THAT IT MAY OPEN DURING A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR LIFTGATE LATCH RELEASE ROD, THE RELEASE ROD ATTACHMENT CLIP AND THE DOOR HANDLE RETURN SPRING. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 31, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MAZDA AT 1-800-222-5500.

You've got yourself a very dependable and capable car there! It's perfect for trips with plenty of hauling space for your small family and all your stuff, or even your large dogs. Plus, you'll get excellent mileage as long as you don't exceed the speed limit. While there is some high wind noise at highway speeds, it's definitely bearable. And the best part? It drives like a car and is super easy to park!

I have to say, this is one of the best small SUVs on the US market that I didn't want to miss out on. I opted for the 4-cylinder engine to save on gas compared to the V6. So far, I'm getting around 22 MPG, which is impressive for the first 1500 miles. The car drives great and has enough power for driving around town. The only downside is that the engine can be quite noisy, which I'm not used to. I plan to check with my dealer to ensure that all bolts on the exhaust are tight. Other than that, it's a great car, and with $4,000 in rebates, it's currently the best buy in this market segment.

The Tribute is a really fun and exciting vehicle to drive. When my husband and I got ours, we took it off-road to Big Bend National Park in the Chisos Mountains and it performed amazingly. The four-wheel drive was very useful and did great in the Chihuahuan Desert off-roads. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone. It's a great price and I love the leather interior, sunroof, and surround music system that I upgraded it with. Now, you even have the option to put in the navigation system! I wish I had purchased it with that option when it first came out in 2000. But I love my little Tribute and will probably trade it in soon for a 2006!
-
I love my Mazda! So far, I haven't had any trouble with it. I got a great deal on the 6-cylinder model, and it has excellent pickup. The only two mistakes I made were buying a black vehicle and getting cloth seats (I have a child), but the car itself is fantastic. I have no complaints at all. If I had to list something, it would be that I wish it got better gas mileage. Currently, I get 21 MPG in the city.
-
I really enjoy driving this car, especially with the V6 engine which gives it a lot of power on the road. The sound system is top-notch, and I'm glad I got the top model. It's great that there are only two models to choose from, and they both come fully equipped depending on which one you choose. I have the ES, which came standard with side airbags. It's supposed to be similar to the Ford Escape, but the Escape only has a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty, while the Mazda has a 4-year, 48,000-mile warranty. Additionally, the Ford model charges extra for everything, like the $100 cargo cover on the XLT Escape, which the Tribute has as standard. My only complaint is that in my model, the column-mounted shifter blocks the radio volume control a bit, but this has now been eliminated with the floor console.

I traded my Camry for this car and although I wish I had kept it for its gas mileage, I still enjoy driving it. I thought a 4 cylinder engine would be efficient, but I only get 23 miles per gallon on trips, even when I'm the only one in the car. However, I did add a power roof which I really like. The passenger door doesn't accept a key, so the only way to get in is through the driver's door if you don't have the remote. This can be a bit of a hassle, especially when I'm trying to keep my keychain from getting too bulky, especially if I'm carrying remotes for other cars too. There was a minor recall for the back hatch door lock, but other than that, I haven't had any real problems with the car. It can be a bit sluggish on the highway, especially on hills where it has to downshift to climb, but it still rides smoothly and has a sporty feel. Overall, I think it's just an okay car.

Despite the challenges I have faced with this vehicle, I remain confident in my decision to purchase it. While I have experienced issues with the gas pedal, door latches, headlights, and engine, I trust that these problems will be resolved through the appropriate channels. As a loyal Mazda customer who has owned six of their vehicles, I have always been impressed with their quality and reliability. I am confident that this situation will be no different and that my vehicle will be restored to its optimal condition.

I really enjoyed my 2001 Tribute, but unfortunately, I made the mistake of trading it in for a 2005 model. The gear shifter now takes up most of the space in the front, and the heater/air controls have little light-up buttons that are difficult to see in daylight. Additionally, there is no way to tune the radio, and there is no cassette player. The plastic on the dashboard looks cheap. Overall, the 2005 Tribute is not as fun to drive as the 2001 model, and it consumes a lot of gas, getting only 14-16 MPG. Even with the top packages chosen, there aren't many extras included, such as wheel locks, bug deflectors, or all-weather mats. Unfortunately, the 2005 Tribute is an overpriced gas guzzler that has lost its zest for life.

If you mostly drive in local traffic, this car may not be the best fit for you. I noticed that my city driving mileage is lower than the advertised 18 mpg, currently at 12.5 mpg. When I reached out to both the dealership and Mazda home office, they suggested that it may be due to my driving style or that the car needs more time to break in. Although I haven't seen any improvement in the past 7 months, I have noticed that the highway mileage is much better than advertised, currently at 26 mpg instead of 21 mpg.

We had a disappointing experience with our purchase. We paid 26,500.00 after being misled about the invoice price and did not receive the features we wanted. Delivery was delayed by three weeks due to some damage on the front panel, and the windshield had to be replaced after a rock hit it on the way back to the dealership. Unfortunately, we were no longer eligible for the $2,000.00 rebate by the time we received delivery. Additionally, there is a small dent in the chrome on the hood, and the ride quality is not what we expected. It hits every imperfection in the road like a speed bump, making it difficult to take notes or write in the rear seat. Despite these issues, we remain hopeful that we can work with the dealership to find a solution.
