The Mazda Tribute (Japanese: マツダ・トリビュート, Matsuda Toribyūto) (Code J14) is a compact SUV made by Japanese automaker Mazda from 2000 to 2011. It was jointly developed with Ford Motor Company and based on the front-wheel drive Mazda 626 platform, which was in turn the basis for the similar Ford Escape on the CD2 platform. The Tribute was priced below the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner in Ford's CD2 SUV lineup.

The Tribute and Escape debuted in 2000, offering front- or all-wheel drive and a choice of a transversely mounted 2.0 L Ford Zetec 4-cylinder engine or 3.0 L Ford Duratec V6. The Ford Escape was also sold as the Ford Maverick in Europe with a Ford 2.0 L I4 Zeta engine with manual transmission, or 3.0 L Duratec coupled to automatic transmission.

One main difference between the Tribute and the Ford Escape/Maverick is that the Tribute's suspension is tuned for a firmer ride than the Escape/Maverick, in order to correspond with Mazda's sporty image. As Mazda had offered "spiced up" models in other segments such as the Mazda3 and CX-7, the utilitarian Tribute was replaced by the more aggressively styled and in-house-designed Mazda CX-5 in North America.

WELL IN 2014 A MONTH AFTER THE RECALL WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR AIR FILTERS AND THEY HAPPENED TO "FIX" THE SOLUTION WHILE THERE WITHOUT NOTIFYING US. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET THE KEY SWITCH TO START THE ENGINE, SPECIALLY WHEN THE CAR IS A STICK SHIFT MANUAL TRANSMISSION WHERE IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET OR INTERSECTION DUE TO INEXPERIENCED DRIVER, AND IF THIS HAPPENS, STARTING THE CAR AGAIN IS A CHALLENGE WHEN THE KEY DOESN'T EASILY START THE CAR IGNITION.

I WENT IN STORE GOT MY GROCERIES CAME OUT UPON STARTING CAR IT SEEMED AS IF IT DID NOT WANT TO STEER AT ALL. AFTER A FEW DAYS LEAVING IT THERE WE GOT IT TO THE SHOP THEY SAID ITS A DEALER ISSUE WE RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM CALLED DEALER THEY STATE THE EPAS SYSTEM WAS REPLACED UNDER RECALL IN 2016 WHEN WE TOOK IT IN FOR AN IGNITION KEY PROBLEM THAT WE PAID CLOSE TO 500 FOR I DID FIND THE RECEIPT AND YES IT WAS REPLACED THEN HOWEVER WE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT IT WAS THE IGNITION SWITCH WE TOOK IT IN FOR. THE DEALER STATES THEY CANT REPLACE AGAIN FOR FREE THEY WILL EXAMINE CAR FOR 130.00 IF WE CAN GET IT TO THEM 38 MILES AWAY. THIS IS THE DEALER WE PURCHASED IT FROM BRAND NEW IT EVEN HAD TO HAVE A REPLACED TRANSMISSION AT OUR COST WHEN THE CAR WAS ONLY ABOUT 7 YEARS OLD. WE MAINTAIN THE VEHICLE AND I WONDER IF THIS REPLACED EPAS. ALTHOUGH THE RECEIPTS DOESNT ACTUALLY SAY REPLACED NOW THAT I READ IT IT SAYS IT WAS UPDATED TO THE LATEST CALIBRATION AND CODES WERE CLEARED ACCORDING TO RECALL 7614E. NOW I AM HEARING IT MAY BE 1500 TO 2000 TO REPAIR ??????? BAD TIMING FOR ME TO NEED ANOTHER CAR. THIS CAR HAS HAD A LOT OF PROBLEMS I WONDER NOW AFTER RESEARCH IF THE TRANSMISSION WAS A RECALL AS WELL

  • Summary: ISSUE #1 - LEFT FRONT CALIPER LOCKS UP PREVENTING VEHICLE TO MOVE. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS THE LEFT FRONT BRAKE CALIPER HAS LOCKED UP AFTER THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TRAVELING AT SEVERAL DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND COMING TO EITHER A COMPLETE OR SUDDEN STOP AFTER HARD BRAKING. THE ISSUE MAKES IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WHICH CAUSES THE BRAKE PADS TO OVERHEAT AND SMOKE. I'VE REPLACED THE CALIPER 3 TIMES AND HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH EACH NEW CALIPER. THE UNDERLYING CAUSE FOR THE BRAKE LOCK UP HAS BEEN A MALFUNCTION IN THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL UNIT AND SENSORS. TEMPORARY REMEDY HAS BEEN TO REMOVE THE 50AMP ABS FUSE FOR 24 HOURS AND REPLACE. SYSTEM WORKS LIKE IT IS DESIGNED TO DO AFTERWARDS. ISSUE #2 - POWER ASSISTED STEERING. THE VEHICLE HAD SHOWN SYSTEMS OF A VIBRATING AND TWITCHING STEERING WHEEL WHILE AT IDLE IN PARK AND WHILE IN GEAR WHILE SITTING AT A STOP. AFTER 2 DAYS OF THE MOVING STEERING WHEEL THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND THEN RESTARTED 5 HOURS LATER WITH NO MORE JUMPING STEERING WHEEL BUT NOW WITH NO POWER ASSISTED STEERING AT ALL. MAKING IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER WHILE UNDER NO TO VERY LOW SPEED. THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO HAVE NO POWER ASSISTED STEERING AS THERE IS NO CONSISTENT RESOURCE ON WHAT TO DO FOR THOSE VEHICLES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN THROUGH THE RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE DRIVER WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V282000 (STEERING) AND THAT A SECOND REPAIR WOULD NOT BE OFFERED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

TOOK IT TO MECHANIC AND THEN TO AUTOZONE TO PRICE PART AND WAS TOLD THIS VEHICLE WAS PART OF A RECALL. I CALLED MAZDA AND WAS TOLD RECALL WAS NO LONGER OPEN, WAS CLOSED IN 2014. THE RECALL IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE. I HAVE CALLED MAZDA WITH NO RESOLUTION, IS THERE ANY WAY TO MAKE THEM RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ISSUE, SINCE THERE WAS A RECALL FOR IT, MINE JUST DID NOT HAVE ISSUE IN THAT TIME FRAME.

2015-10-19
  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2008 Tribute vehicles manufactured February 9, 2007 to April 22, 2008. The affected vehicles have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
  • Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmission and if necessary tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Experience Center at 1-800-222-5500, option#6. Mazda's number for this recall is 8815J.

  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
  • Summary: The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
  • Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2008 Mazda Tribute Hybrid vehicles manufactured October 10, 2006, to May 23, 2008. The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail, resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating.
  • Consequence: If the hybrid electronics system overheats, it may shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge. The recall began November 5, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 7814I.

  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Tribute vehicles manufactured October 5, 2006, through September 11, 2010. The affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. As a result, the system could remove the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners and dealers will update the software for the power steering control module (PSCM) and the instrument cluster module, free of charge. If a vehicle shows a history of a loss of the torque sensor signal or fault codes relating to the PSCM when the vehicle is brought in for the recall remedy, the affected components will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 7614E.

  • Summary: Mazda is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2006, and 2008, Tribute vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
  • Consequence: A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. Remedy parts are now available. The safety recall began on September 13, 2012. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500, option #6.

    I bought the Tribute i sport with a 5-speed manual transmission, front-wheel drive, and 4-cylinder engine because I was looking for a vehicle with good cargo capacity and fuel economy. The dealer had to locate the vehicle with this combination since they had never had a Tribute with a manual transmission on their lot. Unfortunately, there is no photo available of the manual shift lever and console combination in the Mazda brochure. However, Mazda did an excellent job with the 5-speed package. The shift lever is well-finished and attractive, with a good relationship to the steering wheel. Shifting gears is easy thanks to the very light clutch pressure. I have driven 1709 miles so far, and my average MPG is an impressive 30.97.

    I chose the GT Mazda Tribute because of its standard features and affordable price. However, I did notice a few areas where it could be improved. For example, it would be great to have lighted vanity mirrors and more coat hooks throughout the car. Body side molding would also be a helpful addition to protect the doors from dings. Additionally, the interior seems to have been put together with spare parts of different colors, which could be improved. I also noticed some glare on the driver's side mirror reflecting the AC vent inside the car, which is difficult to adjust. It would be helpful if the side mirror unit could be moved outward like on Chevy Blazers. Overall, I understand that some features may not have been cost-effective to include in the vehicle, but I still appreciate the value it provides.

    Great SUV! It has lots of room and is very comfortable. The AC blows very cold and the exterior design is good. Although, the rear seats could recline and fold down easier without removing headrests. It would have been better if grab handles were included and an exterior temperature gauge was added. The stereo sounds very good and the standard safety features are impressive for the money. However, the gauge cluster doesn't look like a Mazda at all, it looks more like a Ford. A sportier steering wheel with audio controls would be a nice addition. The rear brakes should have been disc instead of drum, and the noises from the rear brakes have been looked at by the dealer twice. Additionally, the carpet in the front footwells is pulling away from the door frame plastic. Overall, it's a very nice Mazda that feels like a Ford, but it's an excellent value for what you get.

    I purchased my Mazda Tribute 2008 after owning a Chevy Malibu. I have been driving this car since November 2007. It has a 4-cylinder engine and a manual transmission. Although it lacks in acceleration and power, it has a great SUV look that stands out from the crowd. When I first bought the car, I could get 425 miles out of a tank of gas, but now it has dropped to 390 miles. Despite this, I have kept up with all of its maintenance schedules and it still provides a smooth and comfortable ride. However, as a growing family, I have realized that it may not be large enough for three kids. Overall, I have enjoyed my experience with this car and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish SUV.
