Mazda Tribute problems

The Mazda Tribute (Japanese: マツダ・トリビュート, Matsuda Toribyūto) (Code J14) is a compact SUV made by Japanese automaker Mazda from 2000 to 2011. It was jointly developed with Ford Motor Company and based on the front-wheel drive Mazda 626 platform, which was in turn the basis for the similar Ford Escape on the CD2 platform. The Tribute was priced below the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner in Ford's CD2 SUV lineup.
The Tribute and Escape debuted in 2000, offering front- or all-wheel drive and a choice of a transversely mounted 2.0 L Ford Zetec 4-cylinder engine or 3.0 L Ford Duratec V6. The Ford Escape was also sold as the Ford Maverick in Europe with a Ford 2.0 L I4 Zeta engine with manual transmission, or 3.0 L Duratec coupled to automatic transmission.
One main difference between the Tribute and the Ford Escape/Maverick is that the Tribute's suspension is tuned for a firmer ride than the Escape/Maverick, in order to correspond with Mazda's sporty image. As Mazda had offered "spiced up" models in other segments such as the Mazda3 and CX-7, the utilitarian Tribute was replaced by the more aggressively styled and in-house-designed Mazda CX-5 in North America.

Common Mazda Tribute problems
Based on complaints from Mazda Tribute owners, common problems with the Mazda Tribute cars include:
- Engine Problems: The engine in Mazda Tribute cars had reliability concerns, with instances of the engine dying while driving or causing acceleration issues that led to accidents. For example, the 2006 model had speed control issues resulting in crashes. Owners reported acceleration problems and stalling, especially in older vehicles with around 80,000 miles.
- Rust Issues: The 2005 Mazda Tribute had a significant problem with struts rusting prematurely, requiring costly repairs. Owners had to spend an average of $1,000 to address this issue.
- Power Steering and Electrical Issues: Problems with power steering, rust in areas above the rear wheels, and electrical issues were also common in Mazda Tribute cars. These problems could be expensive to repair and required careful inspection before purchasing a used vehicle.
- Fuel Efficiency and Reliability Concerns: The Mazda Tribute was noted for its fuel inefficiency compared to rivals in the compact SUV segment. Additionally, reliability concerns, especially related to transmission problems, power steering issues, and rust in regions with salt usage, were highlighted as potential drawbacks for owners.
- Interior and Cabin Noise: Some owners reported that the Tribute had a noisier cabin compared to competitors, impacting comfort during long drives. The interior of the Tribute, being from the late 2000s, was also considered outdated by some users.
These common problems reported by Mazda Tribute owners highlight various issues ranging from transmission and engine failures to rust and power steering concerns. Addressing these problems promptly and considering them when purchasing a used Mazda Tribute can help owners make informed decisions and avoid unexpected repair costs.
Is the Mazda Tribute reliable?
The average annual repair cost is $523 which means it has lower than average ownership costs. Repairs are less severe and less frequent than the average car, so the Tribute is one of the more reliable vehicles on the road.
How many miles will a Mazda Tribute last?
I'd say, 150000 - 180000 miles on the odometer, it ran very well, and still does. My grandfather drove it off the lot new in 2003 and used it for 17 - 19 years commuting back and forth to work, and it has about 205500 miles on it now, and it's running fantastically.

- Model: Mazda Tribute 2010
- Report Received Date: 2016-10-28
- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations

- Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Tribute vehicles manufactured March 3, 2009, to May 26, 2011. On vehicles with a 3.0L engine, the Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) may crack, causing a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the FDM flange with one that has a redesigned fuel supply port, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices informing owners of the safety recall were mailed on December 23, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts are in stock. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 0416J.

- Model: Mazda Tribute 2008
- Report Received Date: 2015-10-19
- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
- Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2008 Tribute vehicles manufactured February 9, 2007 to April 22, 2008. The affected vehicles have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
- Consequence: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmission and if necessary tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Experience Center at 1-800-222-5500, option#6. Mazda's number for this recall is 8815J.

The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
- Consequence: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

Hi there! I've been driving my 2001 for a little over 2 years now and it has over 105K miles. The ONLY issue I've had is that it runs a bit rough when I first start it and occasionally has some rough 'surges' at stop lights/signs. Do you have any idea what might be causing this? Overall, it's a really fun car to drive, although the radio isn't very good. I was also hoping for a little better gas mileage - it gets around 18 around town and 24-25 on long haul drives (interstates, etc). By the way, I'm actually looking for another car in addition to this one now! Thanks for your help.

I really love my Mazda, but after 10 years of taking care of it, I expected it to perform better. My family and I bought it brand new in late 2000, and it looked amazing then, and it still does. However, there are a few issues that need to be addressed. Firstly, the fabric panelling on the doors is falling off, but it's an easy $20 fix. Secondly, the headlights are all fogged up, but it's a simple $15 fix. Lastly, the plastic intake manifold gasket has gone bad, which is a major issue that requires a $1000 fix. While I'm not sure if I would buy another Mazda, I'm currently driving a 2001 Toyota Camry LE (4 cyl) while the Mazda is in the shop. Although it doesn't look as good, drive as well, or sound as awesome, it hasn't given my grandparents a single issue. I might consider buying a VW or Toyota next time.

I really love my Tribute! When I was looking for a smaller SUV, I checked out several makes, including Jeep and Ford, but ultimately decided on the Tribute. The cargo space is fantastic, and the area around the driver is both comfortable and well laid out. While it took a little getting used to, I now love that the gear shift is on the steering column, as it opens up the console for more usable space. Additionally, there are plenty of well-designed cup holders and a flat floor across the back seat, making it the perfect ride for road trips. Even with five adults, it's still comfortable.

Hi there! About a month ago, I noticed that the rear wheel well areas of my SUV were rusting and the paint was peeling. I took it to Mazda, who sent me to a collision place to get a quote for repairs. The collision place informed me that they had the exact same model in the day before and decided to check the seams of the doors, under the hood, and the back door. Unfortunately, they found that all the seams were rusting and they could only do a bandage job on it. I was hoping to keep this SUV for a number of years, but the guy told me that in a couple of years, holes will start to appear. It only has 62,000 Km on it, and I believe it most definitely should not be rusting! I am currently waiting to hear back from Mazda. Thanks for your help!

You and your wife made a great choice with the Tribute! It offers plenty of cargo space and impressive fuel economy from its 4-cylinder engine. Despite its efficient performance, it still packs a punch compared to other models with similar engines. On your road trips in West Texas, you typically see an impressive 29-30 mpg. While you haven't encountered many hills, the Tribute is a fantastic combination of style, function, and fuel economy. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

After 96,000 miles, including 50,000 on the highway, this car requires a valve compression job costing $2100, as well as spark plug and coil replacements totalling $750. These issues, combined with previous problems such as the emissions light repeatedly coming on and stalling while driving, have led me to the confident decision to never purchase another Mazda product again.

This vehicle has some serious design flaws when it comes to repairs. As someone who has done plenty of wrenching, I have come across numerous engineering failures that make it hard to give this vehicle a decent rating. However, when the vehicle is working, it's not too bad of a ride. The gas mileage could be better, as I get under 24 for highway driving. But, when it comes to repairs, that's where the real trouble starts. Almost everything is made of plastic, including the intake manifold and valve cover, which has become a headache years later as some of the brass nuts embedded in the plastic have begun to spin out and no longer hold. Basic maintenance, such as changing spark plugs, requires a lengthy swap, as you need to pull the entire intake, plus the IAC and a couple of other sensors and hoses off. Replacing the alternator is also a challenge, as it is buried at the bottom of the engine where it is most susceptible to water and mud (x10 if you have and use the 4WD like it was made to). The official repair procedure is to remove the entire passenger intermediate axle shaft to get it out, which is very inconvenient. Another big complaint is the use of plastic for the door handles. Overall, the vehicle is pretty nice to drive, but if you do your own repairs, I suggest finding something else and staying away from this plastic wonder.

I absolutely adore the 2001-2004 Mazda Tributes! I was finally able to get one for myself about 2 months ago. It had 71,000 miles on it when I bought it, and now it's at 75,000 miles. It's fully loaded with a 6 disc CD and cassette player, side air-bags, and a sunroof. It has plenty of get up and go, but I do wish the fuel economy was better.

This vehicle, while scoring very high ratings, is unfortunately a bit of a gas guzzler, barely getting 14 mpg. The ride can be a bit rough, especially if you're tall and have the sunroof addition, which can make you feel cramped. However, the all-wheel drive works well and, for the most part, the car has been problem-free. While I wouldn't buy another Tribute, I would seriously consider buying another Mazda.

Our 2009 Tribute had been a reliable car until yesterday, when we experienced a sudden brake failure while driving with my kids. Despite the alarming situation, I was able to safely bring the car back home. However, when I contacted Mazda for assistance, they refused to take responsibility for the issue and insisted that I pay for the checkup since the car was out of warranty. As a concerned customer, I believe that Mazda should take responsibility for the safety of their products, regardless of the warranty status. It is important for car manufacturers to prioritize the safety of their customers and provide reliable support when needed.
