The GMC Hummer EV (badged as HEV) is a line of battery electric heavy-duty vehicles produced by General Motors since 2021, and sold under the GMC marque. The Hummer EV is offered in two variants: a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle (SUV), unveiled in October 2020 and April 2021 respectively.

Weighing roughly 10,000 pounds (4,500 kg), the Hummer EV is among the heaviest consumer automobiles currently sold in the United States. Its size, mass, and acceleration have led to concerns about the danger it poses to other road users in the event of collisions, as well as its efficiency and environmental impact.

Overview

The Hummer EV is assembled in Detroit and has batteries produced by LG Chem in South Korea, with plans to later start producing batteries in the U.S. It is intended that SUV models produced from 2024 onward will be able to charge other electric vehicles using an onboard 19.2 kWh charger.

The electric motors' torque profile makes it suited for towing trailers. It includes various technologies, such as cameras that allow the driver to see underneath it and four-wheel steering. The SUV variant is rated to tow up to 7,500 pounds (3,400 kg) and seats five passengers with 35.9 cubic feet (1,020 L) of cargo space behind the rear seats and 81.8 cubic feet (2,320 L) with the back seats folded down.

The pickup truck variant has a longer wheelbase than the SUV. The pickup variant has a 5-foot (1.5 m) high loadbed with a payload capacity of 1,300 pounds (590 kg) as well as a 11.3-cubic-foot (320 L) front trunk. The front trunk on both models is also intended to store the four removable roof panels when needed. It has eighteen cameras installed, as well as front-and-rear pedestrian alerts designed to aid drivers' situational awareness. These accompany numerous other driver-assistance features such as automatic braking and blind-spot warnings.

It weighs 4.5 short tons (4.1 t), with the battery weighing almost 3,000 pounds (1,400 kg). With a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,400 pounds (4,700 kg), it is classified as a class 3 medium-duty truck in the United States.

Common 2022 Gmc Hummer ev problems

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV has been facing several problems, most of which are related to weak water ingress protection, which is unexpected for a vehicle of its price range. One of the significant issues is the leaking driver-side A-pillar, which can cause the door switches to malfunction. Water can enter the inside of the upper A-pillar due to the leak, leading to corrosion on one of the in-line connectors for the driver-side door switches. This problem can cause the door lock, mirror, and window switches to fail, affecting the overall functionality and safety of the vehicle.

The solution to this problem involves sealing the affected areas with sanitary-grade silicon to prevent future leaks. However, unlike the battery connector problem, GM will not address this issue via the Customer Satisfaction Program. Instead, GM has issued a Service Bulletin instructing service technicians on the procedure.

Another issue that the 2022 GMC Hummer EV has faced is a recall due to certain connections within the high-voltage battery pack being out of position or incorrectly welded. This defect can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects certain 2022 GMC Hummer EV and 2023 Cadillac Lyriq vehicles. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the high-voltage battery pack, free of charge.

Additionally, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV has been criticized for being overly large, inefficient, unaffordable, and unnecessary. Despite its cool rear-wheel steering feature, it falls short in terms of confident brakes, weight, and off-road capabilities, making it a less desirable option for potential buyers looking for a practical and efficient EV.

Lastly, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV has also been recalled for improperly sealed batteries. Certain flanges on these battery packs "may not have been properly primed or electrocoated," which could prevent the packs' urethane sealant from adhering correctly. This issue could allow water to enter the battery pack, causing a malfunction. GM is still working to develop a permanent remedy for this problem.

In conclusion, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV has faced several problems, primarily related to water ingress protection and battery-related issues. These problems have affected the vehicle's functionality, safety, and overall customer satisfaction, tarnishing the reputation of an otherwise iconic brand.

SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 1GT40FDA9NU
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Same situation occurred twice. I was in the car at a red light. Car had been stopped for about a minute. Was on a slight decline, engine brake was engaged to hold car in position. Car was stationary completely. Suddenly tons of warning lights flash on the dash board 'One pedal driving unavailable', 'Service ESC', 'Service trailer brake system', 'Service active steering system', '4wd unavailable', service driver assist system , 'Speed limited to 36 mph'. First time this happened was June 2023. Dealer was unable to find the source of the problem but reported that the car was working fine and gave it back to me. The second time was a 10/1/2024. I was able to drive slowly to a parking lot, turn the car off, wait a bit and turn it back on which seemed to reset the warnings. Car is currently at a different dealer and they tell me that unless it happens while they are in the car, they cannot diagnose anything. If this were to happen while driving, it could be very dangerous as the Hummer is a very large heavy vehicle so to lose driving systems in motion is quite a scary thing. Having it happen while stopped is bad since the car doesn't operate normally, steering is erratic and the suspension controls non-existent which impacts safety even with speed limited to 36. The car is available to be inspected as needed.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
  • VIN: 1GT40FDA0NU
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My hummer has been nothing short of a nightmare. Been towed in for service and delivered to the dealer for repair 10 times now and the result is continuously the same problems. Having no date on battery replacement and constant warnings on the dash has brought to the point of it being unsafe for me and my family to utilize. It was recently in the GMC shop at Marquardt GMC for three weeks displaying over a dozen codes of issues. Due to lack of training the dealership mechanics are attempting to do repairs over the phone with GMC. Since getting it back last week all the codes are present again and new issues have developed. I really wanted the truck and was gauged upon purchase by the dealership paying over $200k. My initial intention was to purchase for a family member whom is in need and could take advantage of the autonomous driving. Myself and my family are not even comfortable to the point my wife won't allow our children in the truck so we never took action of helping another member of the family
