1997 Chevrolet Malibu problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.

Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.

First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)

The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.

For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.

The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.

For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

Common 1997 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The 1997 Chevrolet Malibu, like any vehicle, is not immune to certain problems that can affect its performance and reliability. Based on complaints from owners, some of the common issues with the 1997 Chevrolet Malibu include:

  • Faulty Alternator or Battery: Some owners have reported that their car's battery light came on, and the car lost all power, including steering and lights. This issue could be due to a blown fuse, a faulty alternator, or a dead battery. A single mom who owns a 1998 Malibu with this problem is seeking help to diagnose the issue.
  • Abs and Brake Light On: A Chevrolet Malibu owner reported that the ABS and brake light were on in their 1997 Malibu. This issue could be due to a problem with one of the back tires or a faulty ABS system.
  • Fuel Pump Failure: Some owners have reported that their car won't start, even after replacing the fuel pump. This issue could be due to a faulty fuel pump relay or a wiring issue.
  • Ineffective Wiper Blades: Wiper blades that do not effectively clear the windshield can be caused by a worn-out wiper motor or bent wiper arms. In some cases, the blades themselves may be worn out and need to be replaced.
  • Lack of Power: A loss of power while driving can be caused by a clogged air filter or fouled spark plugs. Cleaning or replacing the air filter and spark plugs can help restore power to the engine.
  • Overheating Engine: An overheating engine can be caused by a low coolant level or a faulty thermostat. Checking the coolant level and replacing the thermostat can help prevent engine damage due to overheating.
  • Passlock Security: Some owners have reported issues with the Passlock security system, which can prevent the car from starting. This issue can be caused by a faulty Passlock sensor or a dead battery in the key fob.
  • Leaking Intake Manifold Gasket: Some owners have reported leaking intake manifold gaskets, which can cause coolant to leak and the engine to overheat. Replacing the gasket can help prevent further damage to the engine.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems, such as blown fuses or faulty wiring, can affect various systems in the car, including the lights, power windows, and power seats. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including corrosion, wear and tear, or faulty components.

It is important to note that not all 1997 Chevrolet Malibus will experience these issues, and some may not experience any problems at all. However, being aware of these common issues can help owners take preventative measures and address any problems that may arise.

1997 Chevrolet Malibu recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 1997 Chevrolet Malibu.

2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

IF A BUILDUP OF SNOW OR ICE RESTRICTS THE MOVEMENT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM, THE PIVOT HOUSING CAN CRACK AND THE WIPERS WILL NOT OPERATE.
  • Consequence: REDUCED VISIBILITY IN INCLEMENT WEATHER COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER PIVOT HOUSING. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 14, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020 OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.

  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE FASTENERS THAT SECURE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG MODULE TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TIE BAR WERE OMITTED.
  • Consequence: IF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYS, THE MODULE COULD SEPARATE FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL STRIKING AND INJURING AN OCCUPANT.

Negative 1997 Chevrolet Malibu car reviews

As someone who has owned 11 GM cars to date, I was in search of a reliable four-door car for my family. After seeing that the Malibu was named Motor Trend's 'Car of the Year' and had a solid history with its drive-train, I decided to purchase the first model year of the resurrected Malibu nameplate. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a big mistake. I had to visit the dealer eleven times during the warranty period for various finish and mechanical issues. Additionally, I had to replace the head gaskets twice, the ignition switch, A/C control head, ball joints, and bushings, all of which were out of warranty. I also had to replace nine sets of front brake pads and six rotors in just 80,000 miles. Although it's time for me to buy a new car, I'm sad to say that this time I will have to go for an import.

Your 97 Malibu sounds like a great car for the price you paid! It's large enough to be comfortable, yet small enough for easy driving in the city. While the mechanicals may be a bit sluggish and the mpg seems to be poor, it's great to hear that repairs are few. The styling may be adequate, but it's not flashy. The most expensive repair so far has been the water pump. I hope you can keep it for a few more years, and maybe even pass it down to your son for college!

This was the first car I ever financed. Although I thought I was getting a great deal, within the first month, my anti-theft system locked up and my power window/lock switch broke. I went through two sets of brakes, and one day it wouldn't start. I had it towed to the Chevy dealership where it sat for four days, and I couldn't get them to look at it. My husband ended up fixing it in the parking lot himself. One week before I traded it, the emergency brake got stuck. I could still drive it, but every time I pulled out, it made the dinging sound. The bad part is that I only owned it for one year.

I purchased this car back in March of 1997 and unfortunately, I have had a number of issues with it since then. I have had to replace 3 lower control arms due to rattling, the ABS sensor was faulty, the #1 fuel injector was bad, the alternator stopped working, the brakes wore out prematurely, the headlights became foggy, the brake pedal pad fell off, the rear window seal blew out, and the interior panelling came off. Additionally, the turn signal wouldn't cancel after making a left turn, which took two dealership visits to convince them that it was actually malfunctioning. Although I have had numerous other problems with this car, I am grateful that I was able to move on from it after my divorce. I have since purchased an import which has now clocked over 35,000 miles with no issues.

Despite being only 2 years old, my Malibu has been plagued with numerous issues. Despite purchasing the car with only 68,000 miles on it, I have had to take it to the dealer multiple times for repairs. Unfortunately, every fluid in the car has leaked at some point, except for the brake fluid. Additionally, the driver's side power window only works intermittently. Recently, I received a recall notice for the car. As a result of these experiences, I have lost faith in Chevy and will not be purchasing another one in the future.

Hey there! I loved my very first car, the classic Malibu. Its great looking body style and affordable price caught my attention back in '97. Even though it was a 4 cyl. with no frills, it fulfilled its purpose of getting me around while also looking stylish (I had the gold color). The car never left me stranded, but unfortunately, I did have a water pump leak problem for the last 7K miles.

I purchased my 1997 Malibu in April of 2001 with 73,000 miles on it. I have taken it on many trips and it has never given me any trouble. Although the fuel economy is not great for a 4 cylinder, with the most I ever got out of a tank of gas being 367 miles on a 15 gallon tank, it is still the most dependable car I have ever owned. The only part that ever broke was the alternator, which happened at about 90k miles and cost me about $100 to replace myself. In the 135k miles that I have driven it, that was the only part that broke. I would highly recommend a Malibu to anyone looking for a dependable car. Additionally, the power is decent and it is fun to drive for a four-door sedan.

You got a great deal on your new car for only $4000! While you initially didn't expect much of a difference from your old Ford Contour, you were pleasantly surprised to find that this car is definitely an improvement overall, especially in terms of build quality. While you haven't had the car for very long, it's working well so far. If you enjoy listening to music in the car, you might consider changing the front speakers, which can be done for around $50.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my vehicle. I bought it brand new back in 1997 and I have to say, I've been pretty happy with it overall. It's got over 160K miles on it now and it's still performing well. The V6 engine and four speed automatic transmission are a perfect match. I typically get about 29 MPG on the highway, which isn't bad at all for a 170 HP V6. Of course, like any vehicle, it's had its fair share of problems. At 50K miles, it needed a new torque converter and at around 80K, I had to replace a lot of front end parts to tighten things back up. However, the replacement parts have lasted longer than the originals. All things considered, I still think this is one of the best vehicles I've ever owned.
