Common Mini Cooper 2003 problems
The Mini Cooper, a popular compact car, has been known to have several common problems, particularly in the 2003 model year.
One of the most common issues is related to the automatic transmission. Mini Cooper owners have reported failure of the automatic transmission at barely over 100,000 miles, particularly with the models produced before 2010
Airbags are another concern for Mini Cooper owners. In 2015, Mini Cooper was affected by the widespread Takata airbag problem that affected several manufacturers and models. The recall saw 6,063 Mini Cooper models between 2013-2016 recalled for a Takata issue that may cause the airbags not to deploy properly. Additionally, owners have reported that their airbag warning light comes on intermittently, which is likely due to a failed passenger seat sensor requiring replacement.
Power steering is also a problem for Mini Cooper owners. In April 2020, BMW faced a lawsuit for power steering problems in several Mini Cooper models. The issue caused an unexpected and often unpredictable loss of power steering while on the road, which could lead to damage, injury, or even vehicle fires. The lawsuit involved a recall of the 2002-2005 Mini Cooper, the Mini Cooper S models, and the 2005 Mini Cooper Convertible or Mini Cooper S Convertible.
In addition to these issues, the 2003 Mini Cooper has also been known to have problems with the front lower control arm bushings, which stretch over time, leading to uneven front tire wear and a steering wheel that feels erratic. If you have more than 80,000 miles on your Mini Cooper, these bushings need to be replaced. Overflow tanks are also known to fail, with the seam between the top and bottom leaking and causing pressure loss in the coolant system, leading to overheating if not caught.
Finally, the 2003 Mini Cooper automatic base model with the W10 engine and the CVT transmission has been known to have issues. If the car starts doing funky stuff, it's usually not worth fixing, as used transmissions cost more than the car is worth, and it's extremely expensive to find anyone who knows how to fix the CVT.
In summary, the 2003 Mini Cooper has several common problems, including issues with the automatic transmission, timing chain, airbags, power steering, front lower control arm bushings, and overflow tanks. It's important for Mini Cooper owners to be aware of these issues and to address them as soon as possible to avoid further damage and higher costs.
What is the most common problem with Mini Cooper?
Issue #1: Engine Overheating in Mini Cooper S (2007-2010)
Oil cooler leaks have also been reported on some vehicles. These problems cause the engine to gradually overheat, leading to coolant loss and severe damage if left unchecked. Head gasket failure is a common result of the engine overheating in the R56 Cooper S.
What year is bad for Mini Cooper?
According to Consumer Reports surveys, Mini Cooper released from 2006–2012 is considered the worst years. Having said that, there have been problems in the earlier 2000's as well. First and second-generation MINI's had quite a few problems, of which the most significant was the transmission malfunction.
Does a 2003 Mini Cooper have a BMW engine?
While the name Cooper used to designate a performance Mini, now all Minis are called Coopers, with the performance version called the S. Both trim levels use a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine developed by BMW and Chrysler.
How many miles can a 2003 Mini Cooper last?
How Long Do MINI Coopers Last? The MINI Cooper is the type of car that's designed to last a long time. A MINI Cooper that's well cared for can last anywhere between 75 thousand miles to 150 thousand miles.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-05
- VIN: WMWRC33413T
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: My 2003 Mini Cooper was affected by the 2015 electrohydraulic steering assistance recall. Mini did the repair at 79, 322 miles in 2016. In November 2021, at 98, 000 miles, the car began having intermittent power steering loss. The power steering might disappear for under a minute, or it might return for mere seconds. There is no warning when the power steering goes out, so you have to assume that it is not going to respond with the electrohydraulic steering assistance feature operating. As of today, it has been completely offline for 3 days (although it did come back on for about 5 seconds yesterday). Without this feature operating properly, the car can be extremely difficult to steer.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-12-13
- VIN: WMWRE33413T
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: WE KNOW OF TWICE THAT OUR CAR'S POWER STEERING PUMP FAILED WHILE IN MOTION. AFTER BMW WAS FINALLY FORCED INTO A RECALL FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP FAILURE AND WE RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION, WE TOOK OUR CAR TO CENTURY BMW IN GREENVILLE, SC. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CHECKED OUR WORK REGARDING REPLACEMENT PUMP, FAN, ETC. AND DEEMED IT 100% SATISFACTORY. WE SUBMITTED THE PAPERWORK AND INVOICE FOR THE REPAIR AND WAITED (REQUESTED . AFTER 16 WEEKS AND NO REIMBURSEMENT OR NOTIFICATION, WE CALLED AND WAS INFORMED BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANAGER THAT BMW WOULDN'T PAY US ANYTHING BECAUSE WE DIDN'T USE OEM PARTS. WHY WOULD WE KEEP REPLACING THE PUMP (THIS WAS THE 3RD PUMP THAT WE KNOW OF) WITH A DEFECTIVE ONE (BY ZF) THAT KEPT QUITTING? WE REPLACED IT WITH DORMAN (WELL-KNOWN MANUFACTURER OF QUALITY PARTS) WHICH HAD A LIFE-TIME WARRANTY (LIFE-TIME!) AND WAS MUCH CHEAPER. THE SD MANAGER EVEN SAID THAT SINCE HE'D SEEN SO MANY REPAIRS USING THAT BRAND OF POWER STEERING PUMP HE HAD RESEARCHED THEM AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM. BUT BMW DECIDED THEY WOULDN'T PAY FOR THIS. THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE RECALL LETTER THAT SAID OEM HAD TO BE USED OR THEY WOULDN'T REIMBURSE FOR REPAIRS. I BELIEVE BMW SAW SO MANY DORMAN PUMPS USED THEY KNEW THEY COULD SAVE A LOT OF MONEY BY REFUSING TO PAY. WE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE SC DEPT. OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS BUT BMW WOULDN'T ANSWER THEM SO THEY JUST DROPPED IT, LETTING BMW GET BY WITH THIS. WE WERE ONLY REQUESTING $721.04 WHICH IS LESS THAN HALF OF WHAT A REPAIR SHOP WOULD HAVE CHARGED. CAN YOU DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS? WE FILED THE COMPLAINT WITH SC CONSUMER AFFAIRS IN DECEMBER OF 2017, TOOK THE CAR TO BMW IN MAY OF 2017 SO THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A WHILE. HAVE OTHER OWNERS HAD THIS PROBLEM? HAS A LAWSUIT BEEN STARTED AGAINST BMW?

NOW IN FEBRUARY 2018 HAD MINI OF TOWSON DIAGNOSE AIR BAG LIGHT THINKING THE DEALERSHIP CAN RESET AIR BAG LIGHT PROPERLY. DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDED UPGRADING WIRING HARNESS UNDER SEAT FOR 525 DOLLARS. I HAVE BEEN ON MULTIPLE FORUMS AND THIS AIR BAG LIGHT IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR 02-03 MINIS, INCLUDING 05-06, AND 12-15 YEAR MINIS. MY CONCERN IS THAT MINI KNOWS THIS IS A DEFECTIVE PART FROM THE MANUFACTURER BUT REFUSES TO STAND BY THEIR PRODUCT EVEN WHEN IT COULD AFFECT THE SAFETY OF THE PURCHASER OF ITS VEHICLES. IN THE EVENT NHTSA RECEIVES ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO FORCE MINI TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE, I WOULD LIKE TO BE INCLUDED AS ANOTHER DISSATISFIED CONSUMER. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, GARRETT

Positive Mini Cooper 2003 car reviews

I absolutely love using this car as my daily commuter, even during the harsh Chicago winters with my 20+ mile commute on local roads that involve lots of stop-and-go traffic. Despite a few minor interior squeaks from the dash, I have very little to complain about. I have yet to find another economy car that can be equipped as nicely and handle as solidly on slippery roads and in high winds. When it comes to running errands or city driving/parking (even grocery runs), my family and I always choose the Mini. The only major repair I've had to make was replacing the fuel injector at 70K. One thing to keep in mind is that it's a high-strung breed, which means higher revs and more noise on the highways, as well as a bouncy ride on rough roads. If you're a big coffee drinker, make sure to bring a good, no-spill mug along for the ride!

Sold my WRX for this car and loving it! Do not regret my decision!

Experience with the dealer and the car are perfect. Both lived up to their marketing promises and maintain a high standard you would expect from some Asian competitors. There was no gouging by the dealer and the car runs and performs flawlessly. I use it to commute and it makes the drive interesting and more economical. I highly recommend looking at the Mini before you buy a domestic economy or Asian econo car. The other reviews here covered the fun part and I certainly agree with them.
-
I'm really happy with the car overall. Although sometimes I have to explain my decision to buy it, I don't mind. I've driven nearly all the recent BMW models and even own a 325is. This car pulls like a miniature 540i and handles like a go-kart. It's so responsive that it makes my 325 feel like a station wagon. I can understand why some people might get angry at service problems, but who are these folks who buy one and then bash the looks and handling? If you don't like it, why buy it? The performance run-flats can be a bit harsh over bumps, but on smooth roads, life is great. I'm 6'1'' and my 4 and 8-year-old are a bit cramped behind me, but they always want to ride in it anyway. Kids point, adults smile, and everyone's happy.
-
I have to say, the Cooper S is one of the most enjoyable cars I've ever driven. Once you hit 2000 rpm, it feels like you're riding a guided missile! As for those who complain about the ride being too harsh, they're probably just not fans of the road. Maybe they should consider taking the bus instead.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this car that I purchased used in 2007. Unfortunately, I had a few issues with the clutch. The first time it went out was after driving less than 5000 miles. After getting it replaced, I had to bring it back to the shop six months later due to a master/slave issue with the clutch pedal. Just last week, I had to replace the clutch again after driving approximately 9,000 more miles. While the car looks really cool and is sometimes fun to drive, I personally don't think it's worth all the extra money it will cost you for ownership. However, I'm looking forward to paying it off and going back to driving a VW again. Thanks for listening!

It's great to have a car that's fun to drive, although it may lack torque below 3k RPM. The controls may feel a bit heavy, and the ride quality can be harsh at times. The interior may have a plasticky feel to it, especially with vinyl seats in a $22K car. The uneven gaps in body panels may not look very appealing, and the unpainted plastic on the body may seem cheap. Additionally, the stereo may not be up to par. The Brazilian-made Chrysler engine may be disappointing, even in the S model. Lastly, it seems that some customers have had negative experiences with the dealer.

I bought this car instead of a miata because I thought I needed 4 seats. However, it turned out to be a joke of a vehicle. It leaks oil, shudders on acceleration, and is quite unreliable. While some may argue that the ride is worth it, the repair bills and lack of body integrity say otherwise. Although it is cute, it unfortunately turned out to be a lemon.

Although I was initially excited to purchase my Mini after reading the reviews, my experience with the car has been disappointing. Unfortunately, I have encountered several problems with the car, and it has been difficult to find a mechanic who is willing to work on it. Despite these challenges, I appreciate the car's cute design and fuel efficiency. However, I have decided to sell the car once it is out of the shop. Thank you for your understanding.

Hey there! I had the chance to see a Mini at the auto show just a few months before it hit the dealerships and I have to say, it was quite impressive! It felt like a $100k vehicle! However, when I went to the dealership and sat in the vehicle, I noticed a difference in the feel - it felt a bit cheaper. Although it's not as small as the original, it's still a stylish car. While the base version may not be as sporty as the S version, it's still a decent car. The price is fair, but watch out for dealer markups. At the moment, neither version is worth the money, but if you wait, you might be able to get one at a more reasonable price (closer to invoice). If you're looking for a car that offers both sporting and luxury features, I highly recommend checking out the VW GTI!
