2023 Lincoln Aviator problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln Aviator is a mid-size, three-row luxury SUV manufactured and marketed under the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company — and now in its second generation, with a hiatus from 2006 to 2020.

The first generation Aviator was manufactured for 2003–2005 model years as a rebadged variant of the third generation Ford Explorer — and assembled at the now-closed St. Louis Assembly in Hazelwood, Missouri, alongside the Explorer and Mountaineer.

For the 2020 model year, Lincoln reintroduced the Aviator as a badge engineered variant of the sixth generation Ford Explorer manufactured at Chicago Assembly and offered with a plug-in hybrid variant.

Common 2023 Lincoln Aviator problems

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. While there are no recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the 2023 model year, some owners have experienced engine issues. These issues may be related to the engine itself or the powertrain system. It is essential to address these problems promptly, as they can affect the car's performance and safety.

Another issue reported by some owners is poor factory weld issues with the rear door. This can lead to structural problems and may require professional repair or replacement of the affected parts. Owners are advised to have their vehicles inspected by a Lincoln dealership or an authorized repair facility to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle.

In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the 2023 Lincoln Aviator's tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). This system is designed to alert drivers when the air pressure in one or more of their tires is too low, too high, or if there is a slow leak or flat tire. However, some owners have reported that the TPMS light on their dashboard comes on even when their tires are properly inflated. This can be frustrating and confusing for drivers, as it can be challenging to determine whether there is a real issue with their tires or if the TPMS system is malfunctioning.

Lastly, some owners have reported issues with the 2023 Lincoln Aviator's lane-keeping assist system. This system is designed to help drivers stay in their lane and prevent them from drifting from side to side. However, some owners have reported that the system is overly aggressive or that it does not work as intended. This can be a safety concern, as it can lead to drivers inadvertently drifting out of their lane or having difficulty staying on the road.

In conclusion, while the 2023 Lincoln Aviator is a luxury midsize SUV with many features and amenities, some owners have reported common problems related to engine issues, poor factory weld issues with the rear door, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and lane-keeping assist system. It is essential for owners to address these issues promptly and have their vehicles inspected by a Lincoln dealership or an authorized repair facility to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY6PN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: Ever since buying my 2023 Lincoln aviator hybrid, I’ve been experiencing brake pedal issues, a constant pressure and a pulsating feeling when applying the brakes like the ABS is kicking on. I have taken it to my dealership that I bought the vehicle from over four times for the same issue. They keep saying that it’s normal, I see that the old aviators had the same issue on the hybrid system And a TSB was released for it at one point. While driving the vehicle one day it would not stop so I had to slam on the brakes, causing them to lock up temporarily once I did that it seemed to have improved the breaking almost like something was stuck from the factory! Still to this day I still feel the pressure and the feeling like the ABS is kicking on periodically. I have tried taken it into my dealer multiple times and they keep saying that it’s normal. I opened a case with Lincoln but they keep taking the word of the dealer that nothing is wrong with the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-18
  • VIN: 5LM5J7WC8PG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: Purchased the vehicle on Saturday. Lincoln motors had issued a stop sale on these vehicles due to back up camera recall issues. The stop sale has been lifted and we were assured that the back up camera recall had been fixed. We were contacted by Lincoln to trade in our vehicle due to the issues with the 2021 model and the unavailability of parts. Upon using the vehicle on Monday afternoon, the back up camera system crashed. The camera screen went blue, then black, crashed and then glitched. This resulted in a safety issue while backing out of our garage. The recall that Lincoln claims that they have fixed with additional parts has not been resolved. Lincoln motors should not be allowed to sell these vehicles.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-11
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY3PN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Once again, my vehicle exhibited immediate and sudden power loss while at highway speeds. Ironically, I was in transit to my dealer for the third time for this issue within my vehicle's 3,000 miles. This is incredibly unsafe at any speed, especially at highway speeds without warning. An uncommanded slowdown without any response from the accelerator pedal, and a warning on the gauge cluster stating "vehicle is slowing down". Cruise control at this time was not operational in the vehicle (another issue) and I was using my foot to control the speed. Additionally, the Bluetooth connection was not functioning, the Navigation screen nor map would even load, and I was unable to use cruise control due to an error message "cruise unavailable". We get a separate Lincoln Aviator for a loaner, and not only does reverse park assist not work, the rear camera doesn't function, either. These cars are dangerous and need to be recalled immediately and taken off the road. We plan to sell/trade ours as the soonest possibility and incur whatever financial burden that may come with it. It's not worth my family's safety, or that of someone else.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-27
  • VIN: 5LM5J9XC5PG
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Top handlebar on passengers side fell off completely causing my mother a great fall. Nearly died the way her head bounced off on gravel with handle in hand. The SUV was only a month old. I have other people on a fb page stating their handle came off completely too but no accident like my moms. This is definitely a safety concern that a Black Label Vehicle should have passed inspection before leaving manufacturing plant. Was reported to dealer and they directed us with Lincoln directly. Case was open and has been in General Council over 30 days without a response. They keep coming up with suggestions such as take it back to dealer to get fixed and the dealer simply latched it on and telling us to be careful that it is not correctly put in and let us go this way. Lincoln has also advised to ask other Lincoln dealers for a second opinion? Makes no sense. After numerous calls, emails, faxes, and mailed letters Lincoln concierge is stating that General Council has tried contacting us back regarding this matter and has been unsuccessful. I find this very odd when they have a list of all contact methods for both my sister and I who have made complaint. We were told its 30 days for response and after the 30 days now concierge argues its 60 days. We have video of moms fall from ring camera and the handle was in her hand at fall. I have pictures of her bruises two weeks after incident, bruising on her shoulder was bad, and I have pictures of handle and roof of vehicle. I have not received not one sorry from Lincoln or "is your mother ok." NOTE* My mother was actually on her way to hospital that day, she has been battling an aggressive infection in the toe and was on antibiotic IV's daily and had her pic line in arm at the time of fall. We never really saw the fall until it dawned on me that the ring footage had been saved. My mom was afraid to say how bad fall was in concern of her treatment being stopped but incident was reported to her doctors and nurse

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-06
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY3PN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: Went to get in it this morning, and said no key was detected. Okay, whatever, we'll use a backup code. The screen never prompted for a backup code. We had the key inside the vehicle, so we use the Lincoln Way App to start the car and figured we can get it going from there. Nope, the car was running and everything was going, yet it won't allow us to select Drive, Reverse, or Neutral. Sat there for a bit, fumbling around and nothing worked to get the vehicle in motion. We finally hit enough buttons for the vehicle to shut off, we got out, locked the doors, plugged it in, and just allowed it a few minutes to reset. Notta. Got all this on video. I finally had to pop the hood and use the freaking 2021-2023 Explorer / Aviator Hybrid Vehicle Emergency Response Guide to kill 12v power to the thing. After all that, it allowed us to get in and drive normally. However just a few hours later... 2,600 miles on the odometer and we were driving approx 55mph and the Aviator engaged the parking brake for about half a second. Nasty noise, huge bucking from the chassis, and just a split second of extreme confusion and wondering WTF. The red "park brake" was illuminated on the dashboard, and everything seemed normal afterward. However, immediately after that incident it then disabled adaptive cruise control via a message on the dashboard (no cruise worked). We drove home without further incident, called the dealer, and they stated to call Lincoln Roadside Assistance, get it towed back to the dealer that it was just a few days ago, and they'll deliver a loaner to us. A few hours later, it's on the tow truck. This is the second time this vehicle has placed us in danger. The first issue I'll report after this is submitted. Thank you.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-22
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY3PN
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The rear camera is janky, the collision alert fires off at random times, and now, the main safety issue! Received a huge red triangle on the HUD and NAV screen stating that the "vehicle is shutting down" and then poof, the damn thing shut down immediately without warning. The message was on the HUD and NAV for about a second and a half and it died. The rear camera is janky, the collision alert fires off at random times, and now, the main safety issue! Received a huge red triangle on the HUD and NAV screen stating that the "vehicle is shutting down" and then poof, the [XXX] thing shut down immediately without warning. The message was on the HUD and NAV for about a second and a half and it died. Thankfully we were at surface street speeds of around 30-35 and I was in command of the vehicle. This issue has been reported on other GRAND TOURING models of the Lincoln Aviator where people are at higher speeds, such as the highway or expressway. That said, this is my wife's main vehicle and I am terrified, as well as she, to have her driving this at all hours of the day responding to emergencies at her hospital. PLEASE HELP US ALL that own this vehicle. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-30
  • VIN: 5LMYJ8XY9PN
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On the 10th day of ownership (April 30, 2023), all cameras became inoperative. This is a known/continuing defect since 2020 yet Lincoln/Ford continue to sell these vehicles. My new car has been in and out of the shop on numerous occasions and it had no recalls according to the NHSTA and Ford websites. They have replaced 2 modules and wiring harness and, finally they agreed it was the same 360 degree camera issue that has plagued them since 2020. As of today, my VIN is listed under the 360 degree camera recall with no solution available. I'm told it is a software issue. As repairs were attempted, I also lost rear & forward collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control which may have since been corrected.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-03
  • VIN: 5LM5J7XC0PG
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Screen/image flickers intermittently when rare & front cameras are engaged. I am uncertain of the cause. It happens randomly & sometimes several times a day. Problem started right after I received the vehicle from the dealership. I have couple of videos of the issues & I can share if requested. I took the vehicle to the dealership & they updated software of the vehicle but it didn’t not resolve the problem. I believe malfunction of the cameras increases risk of crash.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-02
  • VIN: 5LM5J6XC9PG
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: I was driving on the interstate with my daughter (she was in her car seat in the second row), when all of a sudden we heard a very loud explosion type sound and then glass from the moon roof came flying into the car. My daughter was screaming and crying, and I wasn’t sure if she had been hit with glass at first (she wasn’t thankfully, but could have been)—she was just very scared. I had to pull over on the interstate to make sure she was okay. I had just purchased this car brand new less than a week ago. There were no cars in front of me when this happened and it was a very mild winter day (temps in the upper 40’s) and partly cloud. No debris hit my car, so this was entirely spontaneous.

Positive 2023 Lincoln Aviator car reviews

  1. Stephan Hyatt 2024-09-14

The controls are very easy to use once you give them a try. Don't worry if it seems quiet at first, it's just a matter of getting used to it.

  2. Hyman Braun 2024-09-03

This car is great for tall people!

  3. Sylvan Champlin 2024-07-12

I absolutely love the power of the 3.0 twin turbo V6! The look is fantastic, especially with the chrome accents. I find myself going into the garage just to admire it. The only drawback I have is the engine shut off feature, which I'm not a fan of. Although, you can turn it off, it's a bit of a hassle to do so every time you start up again.

  4. Theron Kozey 2024-06-11

What's not to like? The product is extremely comfortable. However, as it is still new, I cannot provide an accurate review.

  5. Vaughn Emard 2024-06-08

It sounds like you made a great choice! I noticed that you mentioned ordering a beautiful car through Costco and that it should arrive in 10-12 weeks. That's exciting news! :)
