The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Mazda in Japan since 2006 through two generations With three-row seating, it was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle until the arrival of the CX-90.

Despite being built in Japan at Mazda's Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, the CX-9 was never offered in the Japanese domestic market. The shorter and narrower Mazda CX-8 was offered in Japan instead.

First generation (TB; 2006)

The first generation CX-9 was originally fitted with a 3.5 L Ford V6 engine, but, in 2008, the engine was changed to a 3.7 L unit producing 204 kW (274 hp) and 366 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) of torque. The updated engine was introduced in June 2007 and it was now built by Mazda themselves. This engine was coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. The first generation is based on the Ford CD3 platform that is shared with many Ford and Mazda models; the Ford Edge is its close mechanical sibling. It was launched at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.

Standard safety equipment included blind spot monitoring, backup camera, electronic stability control, traction control, roll stability control, front side impact airbags, and three row side curtain airbags.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
  • VIN: JM3TCBEY4H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2017 Mazda CX9 Signature Edition started leaking coolant from the engine near the firewall. I had a Mazda dealer investigate. They tell me the cylinder head is cracked and the entire engine needs replaced. This appears to be a common problem due to a design flaw and there is a Mazda service bulletin on it. I have found talk of a class action suit online because Mazda is not standing behind their product. I only have 88k miles on this car

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-30
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY1H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2017 Mazda Cx9 was stalling and jerking while driving almost causing an accident but glad I was able to drive it home without causing an accident. Took the car to the dealership and was advised that it needs a new engine due to coolant leak. The coolant was going inside the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • VIN: JM3TCBCY6H0

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-06
  • VIN: JM3TCBEY3H0
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This is the second time my car mazda -2017 had problem with fuel pump. I only saw recall for 2019 Mazda CX-9 in internet. Before the fuel pump fail, I smelled gas inside the car which I was told my mechanic later from the shop where I bought my car for immediate diagnose was considered dangerous. The first time happened 2 years ago when we were on the trip 250 miles from where we live. This time we were about 200 miles away. So the fuel pump it seemed became the problem for Mazda. When we asked Mazda about it they said it is not the same with recall for 2019. If those car has the problem with fuel pump and got the recall why Mazda 2017 did not get recalled? They said it is wear and tear but it is the same issue fuel pump. we spend $912 for original part and bought it from Mazda dealer but we couldn’t get reimbursed because they said it is not a recall. I am filing this complaint because they denied the problem with Mazda is actually and consistently fuel pump!. I have kids that I have to bring to school. Smelling gas, the car stop suddenly and lost power will get us into accident. So I am writing this to let you all know that 2017 Mazda has the same problem with 2019 Mazda which is fuel pump. Please take this seriously. Thank you

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
  • VIN: JM3TCBEY6H0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Mazda 2017 CX 9 apparently had a coolant leak. When we had our oil changed, we were told it looked like it was leaking from behind the turbo booster. As I was driving it yesterday, the car slowed to an almost complete stop on the interstate and a warning sign on the screen showed that it was overheating to a dangerous level. I immediately pulled over and allowed the car to cool down. I checked the coolant level and it was not very low at all, although I did add some coolant at that time. It continued to overheat and even blew tons of smoke out through the exhaust, so I had AAA tow to my home. After researching this, I have found that there was a bulletin posted in 2021 from Mazda about this very thing happening. My husband thinks that we may have a cracked block or a blown head gasket due to this overheating. This obviously could have caused me to have a wreck on the interstate by my car overheating and shutting down so quickly. We are scheduling to have it towed to our local Mazda dealer to let him do the $99 diagnostic. Based on what he finds, which we think will be confirming what we think it is, we will have to have a new engine put in my car due to a defect in manufacturing from Mazda. Even though my car has 130,000 miles on it and is technically “out of warranty“, we feel this is simply unacceptable and that Mazda should help us with this most definitely. I have so enjoyed my Mazda, and I feel that this is not something of my doing, but rather a defect on Mazda part and it should be addressed.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-17
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY1H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: This vehicle has been diagnosed as having the Cylinder Head Crack issue referenced in Mazda TSB 01-013/21. The car has just over 70,000 miles on it, so I understand it is out of Warranty, yet this issue only came up due to a known design flaw by Mazda. I have been told that I will be without the car for up to 9 weeks due to repair backlogs and the cost will be $5,250 plus tax!! This car has always been maintained at the Mazda dealership since purchase and has never had any other issues until this flaw, acknowledged by became an issue. Immediately, I brought it in, only to be told Mazda would not assist in a Good Faith repair. This is very sad that Mazda would do this to loyal customers, there should be a recall and this should not fall on customers pockets when we continue to give them business, trusting they would not knowingly put a full engine repair in their customers pockets

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
  • VIN: JM3TCACY0H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I noticed my 2017 CX-9 Touring was leaking coolant. It wasn't much but then checked the reservoir which is nearly empty. The car was overheating. I had it checked out by the dealer and initially I was told that it was bad radiator cap. This was fixed and resolved the initial overheating problems. The overheating issues resurfaced and took it a certified mechanic which indicated it was leaking from the engine block. The quote for repair was over $6000 See: Service Bulletin: 01-002/23

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY6H0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: SUNROOF EXPLODED. NOTHING HIT THE CAR JUST SPONTANEOUS EXPLOSION WHILE DRIVING. SOUNDED LIKE A GUN SHOT IT WAS SO LOUD.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-27
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY1H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My car has never had any issues but began burning through coolant. After analyzing myself and then bringing to a mechanic, it has a bad cylinder head leak. This is a design flaw in the motors of Mazda cars during the years of the models with a 2.5 Turbo motor. This flaw will now cost me over $6k for a car just out of warranty when I religiously serviced the car at the Mazda dealer I bought it at in 2017. I cannot afford these repairs that were cause by a design flaw on Mazdas side. There is a TSB and a class action lawsuit for this exact issue. Mazda should issue a recall or help owners pay for the repairs since they have acknowledged the issue but have not made it right.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
  • VIN: JM3TCACY8H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I took my vehicle into the dealership service center to have maintenance and repairs done. I notified them to a coolant leak. They discovered that the engine has a cracked cylinder head and that the manufacturer is aware of the defect. They stated that they have new updated parts they will use for the repair so this will not happen again. At this time there is no Mazda warranty extension or recall that covers the cost of the repair.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-16
  • VIN: JM3TCBEY9H0
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: There was a coolant leak on my Mazda CX9 Signature with a 2.5T engine, and when driving the engine temperature started increasing slightly before taking off and turning red. I had to pull off to the side of a busy interstate road very quickly and shut the vehicle down before it overheated any more. Once I got the vehicle to the dealership, they told me it was a cracked cylinder head leaking coolant, and that it was an extremely common problem for the 2.5T mazda engines around about 60k miles, and they were actively working on one in the shop where I was for the same problem. Mazda is not currently helping with engine swap or any repairs as a result and is sticking the customer with the bill.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
  • VIN: JM3TCBEY7H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Known issue in these CX-9’s. Had the issue fixed once with a brand new, Mazda, “redesigned engine.” 14 months and 30000 miles later it’s happening again. Leaking coolant due to cracked cylinder head. First repair was about 9 grand. This time my repair estimate since it’s premature was for another 6000 to replace the cylinder head versus the whole engine. That’s 15k on a used car when I could’ve almost paid it off with that amount at this point.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-24
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY2H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My car started leaking coolant around [XXX]. It did not gave me any alert the car was heating up. My eldest brother was the one that notices. I took the car to the dealership and they are telling me I need a new engine. Now I'm googling and I'm seeing a big number of people reporting same issue. The dealership refuses warranty because is up to 60k miles and mine has 72k miles. However many people are having same issue on where the metal in the cylinder head isn't strong enough to support the weight of the turbocharger. I'm seeing complain in the internet since 2016 and Mazda has done nothing to fix this issue. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-21
  • VIN: JM3TCBCY8H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 11/21/23 Mazda dealership informed that coolant leak in my Mazda CX-9 had ruined the engine. Research on the coolant leak has found several other cases in CX-9 models. It has been alleged that the engines in these vehicles may be prone to coolant leaks around the cylinder head and exhaust manifold joint due to excessive forces. When an engine coolant leak occurs, the vehicle may rapidly lose engine coolant and cause the engine to overheat. It has been further alleged that Mazda is aware of the engine coolant leak defect but has not extended the warranty or provided a redesigned part free of charge. As a result, consumers may be forced to pay for costly out-of-pocket engine repairs to correct the engine coolant leak defect.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-08
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY3H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Leak from cylinder head caused by overheating. Reported a coolant leak prior to diagnosis. Car now shows an over heat code. Safety was put at risk due to immediate need to pull over and no longer able to drive the vehicle. Dealership and initial shop had different diagnosis of the vehicle. Shop advised of a head gasket leak only. Only warning maintenance light came on as car began to overheat. No earlier notice other than coolant leak seen on ground.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-10
  • VIN: JM3TCBCY5H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: 2017 Mazda CX-9 with crack in engine with coolant leaking out. Informed by mechanic that coolant was leaking out from the engine and was caught by heat shield. I smelled coolant, but never saw any on the ground. Per TSB 01-002/23 there is a crack that can develop in the engine due to stresses from the turbo/exhaust. A crack will develop near studs in the engine. Once crack develops, the coolant can leak out. However, in worst cases (which mine did not suffer from...yet), the coolant can leak into the engine and damage the internal components. Right now, I am looking at a $6254 repair bill to have a mechanic fix the engine. I will probably have to take this bill on as my family needs a second vehicle. Mazda needs to issue a recall that is the fault of their own, not the customer. This is occurring on too many vehicles, with turbos, from 2016-2020 CX-9s, CX-5s, and Mazda6s.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-14
  • VIN: JM3TCADY5H0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My car gave me a warning that it was overheating... and gave me a warning to pull to the side of the road because of safety and turn off my car engine because the engine is overheating. I was on the highway when this occurred. The engine coolant light was well into the red zone. I had my two kids in the car and my service animal... The car was say overheating and blinking the engine coolant red warning sign I brought the vehicle to a dealership and it was confirmed that my engine coolant was leaking behind the gasket head and is damaging the turbo charger. The same issue word for word that was stated in the TSB... Yes the warning sign of engine overheating and the engine coolant light to high flashing showed up on the vehicle and the warning of pulling over to a safe place to allow the car to cool down. I was on the interstate when the problem occurred. I also had to put coolant in the car because the reservoir was completely empty to take it to dealership for diagnostic assessment...I bought this car 6 months ago and it was running fine until 3 weeks ago. When the coolant continued to leak and the warning signs would not go away stating the engine was overheating. The repair for this known problem is astronomical and I'm wondering why Mazda has not sent a safety recall and why we are on the hook for the repairs when they know it's a manufacturer defect.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-25
  • VIN: JM3TCBDY7H0
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving in normal, operating conditions, the engine cut off and had to pull off to the side of the road. After checking the OBD two error code from the check engine light, there was an error with the fuel pressure rail sensor. Apparently the fuel pump in these vehicles has been failing with regularity on many other models.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
  • VIN: JM3TCBEYXH0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: August 1, 2023, I discovered the coolant reservoir for my CX9 was empty, had to tow the car to the Mazda dealership, after a few days, the dealership informed me that I have a coolant leak at the cylinder head. This issue is related to the TSB #01-013-21-3753a. The Mazda dealership and Mazda USA informed me that I will have to pay $7,800.00 to have the car fixed, which is ridiculous, but the more serious part is that the car did not gave me any warnings, lights, overheating nothing. If it wasn't because I personally check the car fluid and didn't used the car afterwards, I could have hit the road and be left stranded in the heat or have an engine failure and cause an accident while on the highway.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-04
  • VIN: JM3TCBCYXH0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I experienced coolant leaking from the cylinder head. Mazda is quoting me over $7700 for the repairs. There was a TSB released, there had been numerous revised versions re: the same issue, in Feb 2023 finally including my vehicle. Mazda knowingly put me and my family’s safety in jeopardy by not including me sooner, and now have left me with an astronomical repair bill for an issue they’ve known has existed for years. Had they alerted me when the originally discovered the issue, the vehicle would’ve been under warranty and they would’ve had to replace the parts under warranty.

  • Summary: I was driving on the highway and noticed my car engine temp was way too high. pulled off to the side and found out it lost all its coolant. looked under the car and saw the coolant dripping from the engine. If i didnt notice the car was over heating it could of shut down on me causing a safety issue for me or others. I checked online for the issue and found out this has been a problem for years. the mazda dealership i bought the car from 2 months ago should of known seeing how a TSB was sent out by mazda. There were no symptoms or warnings prior to this.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-11
  • VIN: JM3TCBEY9H0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine cylinder cracked causing overheating and need for a total engine replacement. Service technician said that crack was due to an in factory assembly error - overtightening of components of the exhaust system. This is an issue that has happened in other Mazda CX-9's and Mazda is aware of the problem. Vehicle overheated while on a very busy highway and throttled my speed - I could have easily been hit while trying to get to a safe place to park.

Negative 2017 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

  1. Nathanael Cassin 2024-10-17

The engine of my 2017 CX9 with 85k miles has failed due to a known manufacturing defect that Mazda has not yet recalled. As per the dealer, this issue is becoming increasingly common in these cars. The engine replacement cost is approximately $8000.

  2. Darrion Schmitt 2024-04-21

This car seems nice, but there were two factors that kept me from making a purchase. Firstly, I found the engine to be unresponsive. I wasn't completely satisfied with the performance of the V6 in my 2013 CX-9, and the 4-cylinder turbo was even worse. Secondly, the driver's seat lacked the capability to tilt the lower seat cushion, which my 2013 model had.

  3. Jarod Marquardt 2024-04-04

In 2017, I purchased my Mazda CX9 which came equipped with all the latest features. However, I have noticed stress fractures on the Nav screen, particularly in the top right corner, which has made it difficult to read the clock. Despite being informed that this was due to the summer heat, I believe that if the screen was made of glass instead of thin plastic, this issue would not have arisen. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a lower trade-in value for my car. While I have enjoyed my CX9, this issue has left me hesitant to purchase another one as it serves as a daily reminder of the cracking visual.

  4. Coleman Auer 2024-02-26

Our cx 9 Signature was the family favorite. It was a very luxurious and smooth ride. However, we did experience some issues with our Mazda, as it was the only one out of our 4 cars that needed repairs. Unfortunately, our 2017 cx9 needed a new engine most recently.

Positive 2017 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

  1. Garfield Oberbrunner 2024-06-28

I've owned three Mazda SUVs since 2008 and they've all been reliable with great handling and highway power. The Signature model has impressive quality, features, and technology that rival luxury vehicles at a much more affordable price. The only things I wish it had were a heated steering wheel and cooling front seats.

  2. Loyal Vandervort 2024-06-16

I had two great cars - a 2017 Mazda 3,2.5 manual that I drove daily, and a 2014 Audi A7 which was my travel car. My wife also had a 2016 Audi Q5, so we had a little bit of everything. However, we were moving to a new home on a gravel road and I knew I needed something with a little more height than either of my cars. I wasn't a fan of SUVs, so I went to test drive a few options. I tried the Porsche Macan, but it didn't quite meet my expectations for the cost. I also looked at the Volvo's and the new Chevy Transverse, but none of them really excited me. I did like my wife's Q5, but I wanted something just a bit larger, but not a Q7. That's when I decided to check out the Mazda CX-9. After a long drive, I started to think this might be a good option. I drove a few other brands, including the new VW, but ultimately decided on the Mazda. I've had the vehicle for about 4 months now and I think I can give a fair review. I'm kind of a car guy and have owned a lot of different brands, but very few Japanese. I always thought they felt a little cheap, but the Mazda feels very high quality. The materials are on par with the Q5, and the leather is very nice. The doors shut with a very nice sound and the ride and comfort are great. It's probably a little smoother than the Q5, and at about 45% the cost, it's a darn nice car. I like the looks and the size, and it handles very well off the ground. I just drove it on a 900 mile trip and used premium fuel going up and regular coming home. The MPG was within 1 mile, 27.5 with premium and 26.5 with regular. I didn't experience any driver fatigue at all. What I find amazing is that it has more safety features and gizmos than my 2014 A7, and they all work well. I especially like the auto-dimming headlights and active cruise control. Overall, it's a great car, but the infotainment system could be better. The voice recognition and navigation features of the car are not up to the mark. Mazda has recently announced the addition of Apple Car Play, which is a much-needed improvement. I have a 2016 Chevy Work Truck with Car Play, and it is hands down much better than what Mazda is using. I hope to upgrade to this system as soon as it becomes available. Another area that needs improvement is the automatic climate control. So far, it only blows the air conditioner on high continuously when it's hot. I plan to mention this when I take the car in for its first service, and I hope it's just a simple adjustment. Overall, I would buy this car again, but only if I was guaranteed to get Car Play, as it is badly needed in my opinion.

  3. Scotty Cartwright 2024-06-06

I looked at both luxury and regular SUVs, and the cx-9 stood out as a top choice. Along with the Audi Q7, there are few SUVs that offer such an attractive exterior, high-quality interior, advanced technology, and, most importantly, reliability. The interior is spacious and easily accommodates two large car seats. The safety technology and heads-up display are fantastic, and it will be hard to buy another car without them. I purchased the GT model and would highly recommend it. While it's not cheap and creeps into the lower luxury price range, you get a lot more for your money. The value is definitely there.

Price is perfect. This is my first three row SUV and I wasn't sure about its performance and reliability, so I leased one first. But now, I'm sold! I will definitely buy this car after the lease ends. It has power, is comfortable on long drives, has good gas mileage, and the handling is superb.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had a great experience with your 2017 CX-9 Signature! It's always a relief when a purchase made on short notice turns out to be a great fit. The clever design, build quality, and price of the CX-9 really do make it an unbeatable value. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!
