2016 Mazda Cx-9 problems
The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Mazda in Japan since 2006 through two generations With three-row seating, it was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle until the arrival of the CX-90.
Despite being built in Japan at Mazda's Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, the CX-9 was never offered in the Japanese domestic market. The shorter and narrower Mazda CX-8 was offered in Japan instead.
First generation (TB; 2006)
The first generation CX-9 was originally fitted with a 3.5 L Ford V6 engine, but, in 2008, the engine was changed to a 3.7 L unit producing 204 kW (274 hp) and 366 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) of torque. The updated engine was introduced in June 2007 and it was now built by Mazda themselves. This engine was coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. The first generation is based on the Ford CD3 platform that is shared with many Ford and Mazda models; the Ford Edge is its close mechanical sibling. It was launched at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.
Standard safety equipment included blind spot monitoring, backup camera, electronic stability control, traction control, roll stability control, front side impact airbags, and three row side curtain airbags.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
- VIN: JM3TCBEY4G0
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: August 2nd I noticed a smell of Coolant coming from my car. I looked under my car and noticed it leaking green coolant. I took it to Mazda where they had it for 7 days to then give me a $6,300 estimate with possible added expenses. They diagnosed it as a cracked cylinder head and needs a gasket as well. I am a single mother and have work but I cannot afford that repair especially since Mazda is not going to honor there vehicle and what they stand by. With this issue with the coolant leak and the cracked cylinder the vehicle could have overheated and go into limp mode and come to a sudden stop with my children in the car while driving on the road. I could be hit as this puts my family at risk of injury while we go to school or work. Mazda has done nothing but tell me to submit a claim with customer service which I have. I had my case manager call me once and left a voicemail and I have called multiple times and have not heard back. There was no warning of this until I found forums and other stories that this unfortunately has happened to hundreds of Mazda owners.

- Summary: Our 2016 Mazda CX 9 began leaking coolant and we took it to a shop who diagnosed it as coming from the cylinder head, requiring a very expensive repair or new engine. Luckily our engine did not sieze up while driving, but it easily could have with our baby and toddler in the car. Upon searching the internet I found countless reports from other CX 9 owners who experienced the very same issue at similar mileage ~50k-70k. There is a technical service bulletin for this issue, but they have not issued a recall. This very expensive repair is going to set us back significantly and is a financial burden we were not expecting from our well cared for vehicle. It seems Mazda knows about the issue and is unwilling to address it.

- Summary: 2016 Mazda CX-9 is leaking coolant from exhaust side of engine cylinder head. This issue has been confirmed by a Mazda dealership in North Charleston, South Carolina. The issue first appeared shortly after replacing the water pump (performed by the same dealership). The issue is known and documents on Mazda TSB 01-002/23 - COOLANT LEAKS AT CYLINDER HEAD. The safety of my family was put at risk as there was no indication of a cracked head until there was coolant leaking on the driveway. Should the car have overheated without the indication of a coolant leak, the car would have been placed in to limp mode. Prior to the leak, there were no warning lamps or messages indicating the issue. Further, the Mazda dealership did not detect the issue at the time of replacing the water pump.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-25
- VIN: JM3TCBEY9G0

- Summary: A month ago, I experienced a coolant leak at the back of the engine compartment. Upon researching I found that the head was prone to crack at the turbo and produce the leak. I took to my dealer, and they confirmed that it was in fact a cracked head causing the coolant leak. They also confirmed it was a known Mazda problem on the 2016 and newer 2.5 liter turbo engines. The dealer fixed four in the last month and one on a car their salesman purchased that the head failed at only 2000 miles. I was quoted a cost of $5965 for cylinder head replacement. It seems extremely excessive for a new cylinder head and a more appropriate price for a completely new motor. If this is a known defect on this motor no matter the miles, it seems Mazda should correct this problem in or out of warranty.

- Summary: 2016 Mazda CX-9 2.5L Turbo Touring with 93,197 miles. In September of 2022, I noticed a sweet smell coming from the engine bay after coming home from work. I took my car to my mechanic on 9/30/2022 for an oil change and asked if they could figure out the "sweet smell" coming from the engine bay. When they were doing the oil change, they checked for leaks and noticed that coolant was leaking from cylinder head. Since it was out of warranty, I had my mechanic repair the issue. Which resulted in a complete cylinder head replacement. This is a know issue by Mazda and there is lots of documentation online for this as well. There has since been updated parts to repair this issue, but this should be a recall covered by Mazda. Cause this repair cost me $5,700 out of pocket.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS PROBLEM

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-08
- VIN: JM3TCBDY8G0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: We noticed anti-freeze leaking from our car a couple of days ago and immediately brought the car to our local mechanic. The mechanic determined that one of the cylinder heads in the engine was cracked and was leaking anti-freeze. He said the car was unsafe to drive. He also told us that a TSB had been issued by Mazda for this problem ( Bulletin No 01-002/23, issued 02/10/23). This bulletin states "Residual stress generated during production in the cylinder head material may be greater than expected. The external force from the exhaust system when driving over bumps may cause unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head". Had we not noticed the leak, the engine could have overheated, causing the engine to seize at any time, any place. which could have led to a dangerous accident. An accident that could have occurred on a major highway and could have involved other vehicles as well. Our car has just under 80,000 miles, has been well maintained and garage kept. I do not understand why a manufacturing defect such as this - which could lead to engine failure is not a mandatory recall by the manufacturer. We should have been warned that this could happen and mazda should be responsible for the cost of the repair. It is an engineering design flaw of the vehicle!
SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
- VIN: JM3TCBEY9G0
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I started smelling coolant after exiting the vehicle from a drive. Coolant level was very low. Adding coolant did not last long. I could not see where the leak was. The dealership evaluated and determined I had a cracked cylinder head and the car is leaking coolant near the rear of the engine. This could cause the engine to seize should coolant get into the engine. The dealer (New Rochelle Mazda) explains the cylinder head needs replacing. The dealer also observed bad rear sway bar links. One was detached. The car is serviced at the same dealership every 5k miles. The car has approximately 85k miles. The cylinder head has been repaired by the dealer under the extended warranty. Safety risk was moderate as the car could have stalled on the highway. The component was inspected by the warranty company and dealer only. The only warning lamps that showed up once were both brake indicator lights came on and the climate control would not warm the car.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: JM3TCBCY4G0
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Vehicle “surges” at idle. 300-500 RPMS at a time. Sometimes the brakes hold and sometimes not. Have nearly been in 3 collisions the last 2 days because of this issue. The ECM codes indicate throttle body or TPS issue, both of which have been unfounded. Vehicle has 63,000 miles. Researching this topic online found that many others have had this issue with no associated safety recalls noted. I am hoping to bring light to this so someone doesn’t have to be injured or killed to have this rectified.

- Summary: Engine is leaking coolant. Took the car to Horne Mazda of Avondale dealership for inspection, was told coolant is leaking from cylinder head. Was told the engine overheated and both cylinder head and cylinder block warped and will need to replace the engine. I feel my safety and others were at risk because the car could have lost power and stalled in the middle of roadway at any time due to there was no symptoms of my car engine overheated, car was running as normal, no check engine light, coolant temperature gauge did not show it was overheating, no sign of engine loosing power, no smoke from under the hood, no sweet smell or any indication engine is loosing coolant and overheating while driving. It appears to be a slow leak because coolant reservoir still have coolant above minimum level. First sign of coolant leak was notice during first week of October 2023 when small amount of green fluid was found on garage floor, took car to dealer on Oct.12.2023 for inspection. MazdaUSA refused to cover engine replacement under paid Mazda Extended Confidence warranty (MEC), blaming it's owners fault for operating car while engine overheated and refused to provide written copy of inspection details.
WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

- VIN: JM3TCBEY7G0
- Components: WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The vehicle has tire pressure monitoring system malfunction warnings and parking brake malfunction warnings even after taking to dealership to be fixed. Was told it’s a known problem by Mazda, should be recalled, but there were not any current recalls for the issue.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-07
- VIN: JM3TCBEYXG0

- Summary: While driving, engine suddenly overheated due to coolant leak from cracked cylinder head. This was a known issue per the TSB 01-002/23. See attached. Vehicle only has 55k miles and has been maintained, only requiring oil change, topping off of fluids, and filter changes. Dealership has determined that it will require a completely new long block. Mazda USA is currently only willing to cover a small fraction of parts costs, requiring me to pay the remaining parts and all labor costs.

The CX-9 has outstanding driving characteristics, especially for a vehicle of its size (4,300-ish lb). While the snow/ice performance was just okay for all-wheel drive, it may be a trade-off for handling due to wider tires. However, it performed strongly in heavy rain at highway speeds. Unfortunately, we experienced a creaking or groaning sound on the right rear suspension around 9k miles, which was disconcerting enough for us to take it off road trip duty pending resolution. After a trip to the dealer, the suspension noise was happily fixed. The CX-9 went on a 4,200 mile trip to Yellowstone and performed well on all fronts, including performance, comfort, mileage, and the turbo, which was a huge plus at altitude. If you are not the type who wants a computer to do all the driving, this is the car for you in its category. In fact, we would buy it again if we could do over. It's worth noting that we had zero repair costs, and a software update stopped the check engine light from coming on at 35,000 miles with a couple of codes returned. Overall, the CX-9 continues to be an outstanding drive.

Our material is of the highest quality, comparable to that of luxury cars, but at a much more affordable price. The instrumentation is designed to be simple and user-friendly, ensuring a comfortable and safe driving experience. Additionally, our car boasts smooth and fast acceleration, making it a joy to drive.
-
We compared this vehicle to the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander. After test driving the Highlander, we eliminated it from our list and moved on to test drive the Pilot and CX-9. Although we ended up buying the Mazda, we did like a couple of things about the Pilot. The inside storage compartments are way bigger than on the Mazda, and the right side blind-spot monitoring was pretty cool. However, we found that the inside materials of the Pilot seemed cheap, and the drive was not as smooth. Overall, we are happy with our decision to buy the Mazda, but we do wish the interior storage was bigger.
-
We recently upgraded to the 2016 CX9 Grand Touring and it's a masterpiece! If you're unsure, take it for a test drive. We had no issues with our 2007 model and expect the same from this one. It comes with all the bells and whistles you need.
-
The build quality of the vehicle is excellent, and while there may be some minor issues as with any manufacturer, they are not deal breakers. After our 2010 Toyota Highlander was lost in a flood, we were in the market for a replacement vehicle. We narrowed our choices down to the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander, but neither vehicle overwhelmed us. We decided to add a third vehicle to our list and visited our local Mazda Dealer to test drive the new CX-9. From the moment we saw it, we were impressed with its looks, and the test drive was convincing enough for us to make the decision to purchase it. Compared to our previous vehicle, the CX-9 is a significant improvement. We recently took it on a 5000 mile road trip from the Gulf Coast to the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park, and it performed flawlessly. Despite concerns about the perceived lack of power from a 4-cylinder turbo motor, the drivetrain performed without a hitch, and we were able to maintain speeds of 80 mph+ with ease. We averaged 24 MPG on this trip, which is impressive considering the headwinds, mountain ranges, traffic jams, and accidents we encountered. The vehicle was comfortable and quiet, with minimal wind and road noise. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with our purchase of the CX-9 and would highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new vehicle.

Looking for a comfortable and easy-to-drive second vehicle, we have researched every brand for a replacement. Mazda has recently entered the higher-end price market with the CX-9. In most respects, it competes head-to-head with its comparably priced SUV rivals, some with 3rd row seating and others without it. We found the climate and infotainment controls and functions to be the best and easiest we tested, and access to the 3rd row is excellent for its size. Handling and performance also receive an 'A'. However, there are a few things that keep it from being the best of breed, which led to our decision not to buy the vehicle. Firstly, the interior color choices are limited across the exterior color palette. For most exterior colors on the Grand Touring trim, including silver that is popular in this region, only black interior is offered. The Signature model (top of the line) is offered in very nice leather, but only in one, somewhat tacky, if not ugly, two-tone color palette. This makes the interior look cheap, though the materials are not. Secondly, the height and tilt range for the driver's power seat on the GT and Signature should be enlarged (either in the existing 8-way or as a new 10-way), and the 4-way passenger power seat should be at least 8-way, like its Volvo, BMW, and American competitors. Heated/Cooled front seats would be a great addition. Lastly, there is no front parking assist. Front beepers would be okay, and a surround camera would be a plus and bring the CX-9 in line with its Asian competitors. With the Signature model selling for over $45K, Mazda has placed itself in a higher class with this SUV. The targeted market for this class of vehicle can afford and should be given more interior/exterior color combinations at the Grand Touring and Signature levels and certainly more power seat positioning options. We hope Mazda will make some changes in this SUV so folks like us can buy one.

I have experienced multiple issues with my car since purchasing it a year ago. Despite having it serviced five times for the same unresolved problems, the car still shows the same issues it had before I even drove it off the lot. The display screen did not come on, and I had to restart the engine to fix it. The car also makes knocking sounds when turning left or driving on uneven terrain, which has not been resolved despite replacing the control arms and bushings. Although the mechanic did not hear the sounds during my most recent service appointment, I heard them twice on my 30-minute drive home. I have never had such issues with a new vehicle before and feel disappointed that I have to deal with them now.

We bought the CX9 Signature because of its enhanced safety features, improved looks, and appealing level of creature comforts compared to our 2014 CX9 Grand Touring. However, we have had some major issues with the car. Within less than 200 miles, there was a large fluid leak from the rear axle area due to the rear differential plug not being tightened during manufacturing. We are still waiting for assurances from the dealer or manufacturer that there will be no long-term damage to the rear end. At around 3000 miles, there was a very bad rattle in the front driver's area due to a loose airbag mount. Most recently, at around 12000 miles, the drive shaft had to be replaced due to a bad seal which was also leaking. Now, with just over 14000 miles, there is terrible wear and cupping on the tires. All of this happened despite regular scheduled maintenance being performed as suggested by the dealer and Mazda. Mazda's response was to offer a $200 gift certificate, which we appreciate, but we have decided to look for another SUV option. We have since traded in the vehicle for another one.

Hi there! I'm currently in the market for a bigger car that my whole family can use, and the CX9 seemed like the perfect fit on paper. However, when I went to the dealership to test drive it, I was disappointed to find that the driver's seat didn't go low or far back enough for me. Even though I'm only 5'11, the seat was too high for me and I couldn't straighten my legs all the way. I was hoping to use this car as my commuter, but unfortunately, the seat just won't work for me. I'm going to keep looking for something that fits my needs better. By the way, I went back to the dealer and found out that the driver's seat is actually a 6-way power seat with lumbar support, not an 8-way power seat. It's missing the front seat height adjustment, which is really disappointing.

My wife and I recently traded our 2014 CX-5 for a 2016 CX-9, which we love for its outstanding features. However, we have been experiencing some issues with the air conditioning system, which unfortunately has not been able to keep up with the hot and humid summers of central Kentucky. Despite taking the car to the dealer twice, we have been told that there is no fix possible due to an engineering fault. While Mazda Corp has informed us that it is within specs, we have found that the air temperature won't blow any colder than 54 degrees, which is not ideal. According to our research, air conditioning should blow between 40-45 degrees. We understand that this may not be a problem for everyone, but for us, it is a major issue as we value comfort in the cab. We have come across one review that gives the CX-9 rave reviews but found themselves
