The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.

All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.

Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

Common 2015 Audi A6 problems

The Audi A6, produced from 1994 to the present, is a luxury sports sedan known for its quality infotainment and excellent performance. However, some model years are best avoided due to various issues.

Airbags and Seatbelt Tensioner Faults:
Audi issued a recall for A6 models produced between May 1, 2016, and October 30, 2016, due to faulty airbags and seatbelt tensioners that may not work correctly in a collision. It's recommended to consult with an Audi dealer to determine if your vehicle is affected.

Auxiliary Heater Element Failure:
In A6 models produced between July 8, 2014, and October 31, 2014, the auxiliary heater element used in the air conditioning system could fail. Audi issued a recall for this issue, and it's advisable to contact your local dealer for further information and to ascertain if the recall applies to your vehicle.

Towing Bracket Locking Mechanism:
For A6 models equipped with a hinged tow bar and produced between December 2, 2015, and December 17, 2018, the locking mechanism could be faulty. It's recommended to book your vehicle into an Audi dealer for inspection, as a bracket may need to be replaced.

Panoramic Glass Sunroof Bonding Agent:
A small number of A6 models produced between July 16, 2018, and October 10, 2018, and fitted with a panoramic glass roof, could have an issue with the bonding agent used to keep the glass panels in place. Consult with your local Audi dealer to determine if your vehicle is affected and if it requires repair.

Fuel Leaks:
Audi issued two recalls for the A6 concerning fuel leaks. The first recall affects models produced from April 1, 2011, to April 30, 2012, while the second recall applies to models produced between February 18, 2014, and September 2, 2016. Contact your local dealer to find out if your vehicle is affected.

Coolant Pump:
In A6 models produced between May 1, 2011, and October 31, 2016, particles in the engine coolant could block the pump and lead to overheating. Affected vehicles will need to have the coolant system checked and any damaged parts replaced, along with a software update. Consult with your Audi dealer if your vehicle is affected.

Reduction in Braking Performance:
In A6 models produced from January 1, 2012, to August 27, 2014, an issue with the diaphragm in the brake servo could result in a reduction in braking performance. Audi dealers can determine if your vehicle is affected and rectify the fault.

Gearbox Problems:
Audi A6 models, particularly those with automatic, CVT, or multitronic gearboxes, may experience hesitant or clunky gear changing due to software problems. Taking the vehicle to an Audi dealer for software reprogramming should resolve this issue.

Turbo Problems:
If you notice blue smoke from the exhaust or a whistling noise from the top of the engine, the turbo may be failing. A replacement turbo will be necessary to rectify the issue.

Excessive Oil Use:
The A6 is known for using a lot of oil. Regularly checking the engine oil levels and topping up as necessary can help prevent detrimental effects on the engine.

Water Leaking into Passenger Foot Well:
Water leaking into the passenger foot well is usually caused by a blockage in the drainage holes below the windscreen or in the plenum chamber. Checking and unblocking these areas can help prevent water leaks.

Dual Mass Flywheel Issues:
Excessive vibration from the engine when revved in neutral could indicate a problem with the dual mass flywheel, which is a very expensive repair. It's recommended to have a professional inspect the issue.

Display Panel Failure:
If you notice lines on the display panel or uncontrolled on/off behavior, the mechanism operating the screen or electrical failure may be the cause. Replacing the unit is the only solution, which can be expensive.

When considering purchasing a used Audi A6, it's essential to be aware of these common problems and potential recalls. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues.

  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT THERE WAS A FLASH FLOOD ON A KNOWN FLOOD ROAD. AFTER PROCEEDING THROUGH WHAT WAS MAYBE 6"-12" OF WATER, VEHICLE'S AMBER STEERING DEFECTIVE WARNING LIGHT APPEARED WITH THE NOTIFICATION STATING THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. THE NEXT DAY WHILE DRIVING, THE AMBER STEERING DEFECTIVE LIGHT TURNED RED WITH A NOTIFICATION STATING NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. UPON THIS HAPPENING, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER STEERING, TPMS FAULT, STABILIZATION FAULT, AND ACC BRAKING GUARD FAULT APPEARED. THANKFULLY, I WAS NOT DRIVING TO WORK THAT MORNING AND WAS GOING LESS THAN 30MPH RATHER THAN 70MPH. AUDI SERVICE ADVISOR STATES THAT THERE ISN'T A WAY THAT THIS WAS CAUSED DUE TO WATER DAMAGE. I DISAGREE. I BELIEVE WATER ENTERED THE STEERING MODULE (EVEN THOUGH THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SEALED UNIT) AND CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL SHORT TO THE MODULE. DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE SERVICE ADVISOR RELAYED HIS SUPPOSED FINDINGS TO THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER. I AM CURRENTLY LIABLE FOR THE REPAIRS ON THE VEHICLE.

OWNER WAS INFORMED THAT AN ADDITIONAL SAFETY RECALL (19O2) WILL REPLACE THE COOLANT PUMP WITH A NEW ONE. ON 04 MARCH 2019, WE CALLED AUDI USA AND WERE TOLD THAT THE REPLACEMENT WAS NOT YET AVAILABLE. THE COOLANT PUMP ALSO AIDS IN PROVIDING ADDITIONAL CABIN HEAT WHICH IS IMPORTANT DURING THE WINTER MONTHS FOR THE COMFORT AND SAFETY OF OCCUPANTS IN THE VEHICLE. DUE TO THE PUMP BEING DISCONNECTED, THE CABIN HAS BEEN VERY SLOW TO WARN, INCLUDING THE WINDOW DEFROSTERS. THIS PRESENTS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. IT ALSO PRESENTS A POSSIBLE DAMAGE ISSUE SINCE THE AFTER COOLANT PUMP IS USED TO ALLEVIATE HEAT FROM THE TURBOCHARGER. AUDI USA STATED ON 04 MARCH 2019 THAT THE NEW COOLANT PUMPS WILL BE AVAILABLE SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE.

I CALLED THE U.S. AUDI SERVICE DESK AND THEY ALSO SAID THAT THEY CANNOT HELP WITH THE ISSUE AND TOLD ME TO CHECK WITH NHTSA. I FULLY UNDERSTAND THE LIMITATIONS IN THIS MATTER BUT I DO WANT TO APPEAL THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL MILITARY MEMBERS IN THE SAME SITUATION. AS A SERVICE MEMBER, HUSBAND, AND A FATHER, I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY CAR. I SINCERELY WANTED TO REACH OUT AND SEE IF THERE IS ANY POSSIBLE WAY TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE OVERSEAS. AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-01
  • VIN: WAUCFAFC8FN
  • Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: I'M EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED AND DISAPPOINTED IN OUR CHECK AND BALANCES WITH AUDI AND THESE SAFETY RECALLS. I OWN A 2015 AUDI A6, BACK IN JUNE I FOUND THAT THERE ARE TWO SAFETY RECALLS WITH THE FRONT AIRBAGS THAT HAVE KILLED 20 AND INJURED OVER 100 PEOPLE. I'VE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH. THE AIRBAGS ARE MORE LIKELY TO EXPLODE IN HOT STATES AND I'M LOCATED IN SOCAL, PARTICULARLY THE VALLEY, WHICH IS THE HOTTEST PART OF LA, REACHING 100 DEGREES + THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER. I'VE TRIED TO RESOLVE THIS WITH AUDI, BUT THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHEN IT WILL BE AVAILABLE; THE HOPE IS OCTOBER, BUT I WAS TOLD AUGUST BEFORE. MY PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IS OFTEN DISABLED AUTOMATICALLY WHEN THERE IS A PASSENGER IN MY CAR, THE LIGHT COMES ON AND OFF AT THE WRONG TIMES!!!. YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW ON EDGE I FEEL ABOUT DRIVING AROUND, GOING TO WORK, HAVING MY CHILD, OR FAMILY IN THE CAR... ITS SCARY. NO DEALERSHIP WILL BUY THIS CAR BACK BECAUSE IT CANNOT SALE WITH AN OPEN RECALL, AND OR IT MAKES IT HARDER. ADDITIONALLY, THE CAR WON'T PRIVATELY SALE EITHER BECAUSE THERE IS THIS OPEN SERIOUS RECALL THAT CURRENTLY CANNOT BE FIXED, AS I'VE TRIED. I REQUESTED THAT AUDI GIVE ME THE KELLY BLUE BOOK VALUE OF THE CAR BECAUSE IT IS UNSAFE, THEIR RESPONSE WAS NOT TO HAVE PEOPLE IN THE FRONT SEATS, WHICH DOESN'T MAKE SINCE BECAUSE I HAVE TO DRIVE. ADDITIONALLY, I'M PAYING ALOT OF MONEY, NOT TO USE MY FRONT SEAT? THAT'S 1/4 OF MY CAR. I'M NOT ASKING FOR MUCH, BUT I WANT TO GET OUT OF AN UNSAFE CAR THAT DOESN'T HAVE A DATE FOR REPAIR ANYTIME SOON. I'M MORTIFIED EVERY TIME I DRIVE, READING THE STORIES OF THE PEOPLE WHO'VE DIED BECAUSE THE AIRBAGS MALFUNCTIONED AND OR BLEW UP. CAR MANUFACTURES SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE WHEN THEY PUT THE PUBLIC SAFETY AT RISK. THEY SHOULD ALSO HAVE STRICT TIME FRAMES TO REPAIR OR PAY DAMAGES OR AT LEAST OFFER RENTALS. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO RESOLVE THIS FAST?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-02
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WAUGFAFC0FN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: ON THE HIGHWAY, MY A6 TURNED PERPENDICULAR AND WAS HIT BY A SEMI TRUCK. SPEAKING WITH THE AUDI REPRESENTATIVES THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN. IS THERE A DEFECT THAT WOULD ALLOW THE CAR WITH A QUATTRO SYSTEM TO MAKE SUCH A DRAMATIC TURN TRAVELLING AT 60 MILES AN HOUR?

  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: RECEIVED A LETTER FROM AUDI OF AMERICA DATED MARCH 2017 CALLED DEALER IN BLOOMFIELD IN MICHIGAN LAVERY AUDI REPORTED THIS LETTER BUT UP NOW SEPTEMBER 19, 2017 HAVE NOT HARD FROM THEM. HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT UNTIL THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED.
2015-09-20

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-09-20
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: EXHIBITS AN ALARMING TENDENCY TO WEAVE FROM SIDE TO SIDE WITHOUT A STEERING INPUT. THIS OCCURS WITHOUT A CHANGE IN STEERING WHEEL POSITION, VEHICLE SPEED, OR CHANGE IN ROAD SURFACE OR PREVAILING WIND DIRECTION. IT IS MORE PRONOUNCED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND WHEN WHEEL IS CENTERED AT 12 O'CLOCK BUT DOES OCCUR AT ALL SPEEDS AND STEERING VECTORS. AUDI DEALERSHIP NOTES THE PROBLEM AND BLAMES THE NEW ELECTRIC STEERING SYSTEM BUT STATES IT IS A "CHARACTERISTIC" OF THE SYSTEM AND IS NOT A DEFECT. I DISAGREE AND FEEL ANY DIRECTION CHANGE IN A VEHICLE WITHOUT A DRIVER INPUT OR A EXPLAINABLE EXTERNAL FACTOR CONSTITUTES A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE.
2015-04-25

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-04-21
  • VIN: WAUHMAFC8FN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: AUDI BRAKE GUARD ACTIVATED SPONTANEOUSLY BECAUSE THE CAR SENSED AN IMPENDING IMPACT WITH A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME, BUT THE BRAKE GUARD APPLIED STRONG BRAKING ACTION ON AN OPEN ROAD, BRINGING ME TO AN IMMEDIATE STOP. HAD THERE BEEN A CAR BEHIND ME, IT WOULD HAVE LIKELY HIT MY VEHICLE, SINCE I CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP ON AN UNOBSTRUCTED ROADWAY FOR NO REASON. *TR

Negative 2015 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Roosevelt Rohan 2024-07-28

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my A6 Prestige 3.0 that I bought back in May 2014. I opted for the Cold Weather Package, LED lights, and the 19-inch Sport Package, among other things. After driving it for 6 months, I can say that it's a comfortable and quiet ride that delivers enough power with its twin-turbo engine. However, I wouldn't necessarily classify it as a 'sport sedan'. It has a tendency to understeer and the Dynamic Driving mode doesn't seem to help with suspension stiffness. The power comes in around 3K RPM when the turbo kicks in. As for the interior, I'd give it a solid B. It has some great features like 4-zone climate control, ventilated seats, and shades, but unfortunately, these are all options that come at an additional cost. I do wish that the door trim was made of leather instead of plastic, and the MMI system could use some improvement. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Lucas Lang 2024-06-01

I recently switched from MBenz and had a great experience with this car. However, just after the warranty expired at 57k miles, the MMI stopped working and the repair cost was $3500. I was disappointed as I expected a top-of-the-line Audi worth $62k to be fully functional until at least 58k miles. This experience has made me lose confidence in Audi and I am considering other brands for my next car.

Positive 2015 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Melvina Padberg 2024-11-27

As a second-hand vehicle, it has proven to be quite dynamic. Although there have been some repair issues, additional warranties have enabled the manufacturer to resolve them, making ownership extremely satisfying.

  2. Ubaldo Howe 2024-11-18

You've got yourself a solid performer here! While it may not be overwhelmingly fast, it's definitely plenty quick and has gobs of low end torque. Plus, with 40MPG on the highway in an executive sedan, you can't go wrong. It's worth noting that the tachometer reads 2,000 RPM at 90 MPH, so the motor isn't working hard at normal highway speeds.

  3. Jordan DuBuque 2024-10-14

Hi there! I just wanted to share that the car I own is the best one I've had to date. :)

  4. Alek Turcotte 2024-10-05

We loved this car the minute we saw, drove, and owned it.

  5. King Hamill 2024-10-04

This car is a smooth and sophisticated ride that comfortably accommodates four adults. It has the ability to be very brisk if you desire, but always feels solid and safe. The exterior is stylish and the interior is beautifully designed with an up-market look and feel. While there are many electronics in the car, it has been faultless in the first year of ownership. UPDATE FEB 2021: I have now owned the car for four years and it has proven to be incredibly reliable, starting instantly and running smoothly. The Dynamic driving mode is a fun feature that makes the car feel like a peppy hooligan. Despite Covid restrictions, the interior materials are holding up excellently and the car still exudes quality. I only had to repair the left front wheel bearing once, which was my fault for bumping over the lip of my driveway too fast. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about this car and whoever buys it after me later this year (trading in just due to nearing 7 years old and mulling S5) will get a nearly new ride.
