  • Summary: I was waiting at a traffic signal to make a left turn, with my foot on the brake. The car accelerated aggressively, with no warning, like the pedal was pushed to the floor. My [XXX] father was in the car with me. Thankfully, my grandchildren were NOT in the car. You could smell the gas and brakes. It was NOT driver foot placement, nor was it floor mats. Vehicle has ~ 75K miles, and I am terrified of this happening again. I had driven this car regularly in rush hour stop & go traffic for years with no event like this ever before. Apparently sudden unintended vehicle acceleration is a recognized problem. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-05
  • VIN: JM3KE4DY8E0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: UNKNOWN - A few months ago, I started to have an issue when turning off the vehicle. After putting the vehicle in park and pressed to turn off the vehicle, the radio/GPS screen would stay on and a warning message stating the car must be in ‘P’ark. I would restart the car, put it in neutral, turned it off, but the same message kept popping up and would beep at me when trying to close the door. I jiggle the stick multiple times and tried different ways to turn off the car, now taking as many as 10 times before the radio/GPS screen turns off and the message goes away. I made an appt with the closest dealer, but I have to wait for 4 weeks for the car to be inspected & corrected. This seem like a safety hazard not knowing if the car is actually in park and turned off so the battery doesn’t drain. There should be a recall issued by Mazda to correct this issue as many people have posted the same problem over many years.
2023-06-05

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-04
  • VIN: JM3KE2CYXE0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When the vehicle is put in park and the button is pressed to turn off the vehicle, the radio display screen stays on. I have to recrank the car, put it in a different gear, and then back into park and try again. Sometimes I do this process up to 10 times in order for the display screen to turn off. When the display screen stays on, the battery is drained within hours.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-16
  • VIN: JM3KE4CY8E0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: A couple of months ago we started to have an issue when trying to turn off our vehicle. A warning message stating the car must be be in 'P' to turn off keeps popping up even though the shift stick is in the correct position. We have to jiggle the stick multiple times before the car turns off. This can be a safety hazard if the car is in fact not safely in the park position after being able to turn off the car. The vehicle was recently serviced for an oil change and we were reminded of the issue and were told this is a known issue. They recommended to change the shift switch to resolve it.

The engine stopped and I was almost hit by a semi-truck as I was struggling to move over a lane to stop on the side of the highway. Vehicle was towed to the auto shop and diagnosed with a crack in the cylinder head. There was no problems prior to this. My research has shown that this has become a common problem with this vehicle.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-15
  • VIN: JM3KE2BEXE0
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Car was inspected in April of 2021. The front of car started making knocking or clunking sounds on the right side. 2 weeks later, while making a U-turn instead of getting on the interstate, there was a loud crunch/crash sound. It sounded like a garbage can went under the vehicle. Upon further investigation, realized that the right ball joint somehow dropped out of the knuckle. This forced the axle to pop out and further damaged the rest of the suspension components. Thank god this didn’t happen on the highway with my wife and 2 toddlers in the car- that would have been horrific.
2022-12-21

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-01
  • VIN: JM3KE2BE5E0

The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic and the front strut assembly was replaced again. The dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not under warranty. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 146,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
  • VIN: JM3KE2CY6E0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
  • VIN: JM3KE2DY5E0
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I as well as many other mazda cx5 owners have experienced the same issue where the suv will not power off when the push to start button is pressed. The suv requires you to power it back on and shut it off several times before it actually shuts down. The radio and other accessories will not shut off when the car is powered down. Resulting in serious issues possibly happening if the car is not shut down properly. Anyone could get in and start the vehicle back up if they wanted to. Stolen vehicles. Vehicles are unable to lock properly. Batteries are constantly being repurchased due to this issue.
2022-11-29

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-15
  • VIN: JM3KE4DY9E0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicle remains ON when you hit the turn off switch. Sometimes it takes several jiggles of the gear shifter to turn it off. I reported it to Mazda and they said that they can't do anything. Seems to be a common issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/b77yli/my_2014_mazda_cx5_wont_turn_off_kind_of/ Thankfully, my car is still operating but I would like it to shut off every time the first time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-13
  • VIN: JM3KE4CY3E0
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: There is a defect that leads to the car not turning off property. Reading on various forums, it seems this is a very common problem in Mazda CX-5s. I have spent over $1500 recently on this car, and now this? My battery dies overnight because the car doesn't not fully shut down in park. Again, this is all over the forums. People are getting stranded. It's terribly unsafe.

SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-08
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JM3KE4DY1E0
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: Lower ball joints, lower control arms, and axles failed on the front right and front left of the vehicle while driving. The wheels were partially disconnected with no ability to steer or drive my vehicle. Both failures happened within 2 1/2 months. After the right side failed, the auto mechanic checked the left side yet it failed regardless of all inspections including the annual state requirement. During both failures I was fortunate to be driving through turns at slow rate of speed. Serious injuries and more likely casualties would have occurred had I been driving at a higher rate of speed through traffic when the failures occurred.

The affected windshields have a bracket mounted on the inside to hold a laser sensor or LIDAR device for the Smart City Brake Support system. These brackets were improperly affixed with only tape instead of tape and urethane and therefore may loosen.
  • Consequence: If the bracket loosens or detaches from the windshield, the safety features of the Smart City Brake Support system may be disabled and therefore increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Pilkington will contact the wholesalers and retailers that purchased the windshields to try to identify the affected customers. The affected windshields will be replaced, free of charge. This recall began on February 15, 2016. Owners may contact Pilkington at 1-844-278-7230.

Negative 2014 Mazda Cx-5 car reviews

  1. Dayne Gleason 2024-08-13

The noise is definitely coming from the rear wheel well area. As someone who spends a lot of time on the Interstates for work, the constant noise is a major issue. While some friends have suggested turning up the radio, that is not a real solution. It is worth noting that both Consumer Reports and Popular Mechanics have mentioned the noise issue in their reviews, which I wish I had read before purchasing. While I am happy with the fuel economy, looks, and overall driving experience of the vehicle, the noise has made me regret my purchase since my first road trip. I am now considering my options, whether that means taking a financial loss by trading or selling it, or finding a solution to the noise problem.

  2. Faustino Blick 2024-05-16

I fell in love with the CX5 and enjoyed it a lot, but unfortunately, some issues started to arise. When my commute changed from 55 miles a day, with 70% highway driving, to 40 miles mostly in the city, my MPG really took a hit. I used to get 30+ mpg per tank, but after moving, I never saw 20 mpg again. Additionally, I noticed some wear and tear on the interior. The seats in my 2004 Honda with 170k miles looked better than the CX5's after less than 6 months. The driver's seat looked worn out after only 8k miles, and stray threads were popping up in the passenger seat. The carpet in the rear hatch was also damaged after I moved bags and boxes. I had hauled tons of stuff in my Honda, and it still looked better. I can't imagine how bad the CX5 will look in 5 years. Despite these issues, I was able to get a great trade-in deal with Subaru.

  3. Clay Reichert 2024-03-02

I purchased my CX-5 in the summer of 2016, after driving a Toyota Tacoma 4x4 since 2006. Unfortunately, my 7 1/2 year old son was no longer comfortable on the back of the Tacoma (it was the access cab model), so I decided to sell it. Since purchasing my CX-5, I have encountered a few issues. The most significant issue is with the start/stop switch located by the shifter in the center console. The car does not completely shut off when I put it in park and press the ignition switch, and I have to restart it (sometimes 15 times or more) for it to actually shut off. When I contacted Mazda Corp., they seemed unaware of this issue, but it is all over the internet, and the service person at the Mazda dealership confirmed that it is a frequent occurrence. On the day that I brought the car in to have this issue fixed, he told me that there was another CX-5 in the shop for the same problem. Additionally, the Bluetooth system has stopped working several times, and I have had to disconnect the battery for 10+ minutes to reset it. Despite these issues, the car is comfortable and useful. I hope that Mazda Corp. will address these issues with a recall, but for now, I will continue to work with them to get reimbursed for this obvious defect with the CX-5.

Positive 2014 Mazda Cx-5 car reviews

  1. Karley Considine 2025-01-04

We recently purchased this vehicle and so far, we are very pleased. We will update this review with new findings and experiences after a few months. Despite a few reports, we have not experienced much road noise. The Bose system works great, the navigation is just fine, and the seats are very comfortable. It is important to note that this vehicle is not a European luxury vehicle. However, at the CX5 price point, it competes quite well with all of its competitors and does so for less. It is definitely worth considering!

  2. Orval O'Kon 2024-11-27

Hi there! I'm happy to report that my CX-5 has almost 150,000 miles on it and is still running beautifully. The engine, brakes, and powertrain are all in excellent condition. I did replace the timing belt and gaskets at 120,000 miles, but nothing else major. To cover some wear and lots of beverage spills, I put wetsuit covers (purchased at Costco) on the front seats, and now they look almost new! The only issue I've had is that the Apple iPod connection doesn't work, so I can only play my iPod with an AUX cord - but it still sounds fine. The acceleration, handling, and braking are still excellent. In the past year, I've only driven the car occasionally (using another car for commuting), so I cover it and only use it when I need to tow or carry large items. I figure the car will easily last me another several years and at least another 50-100,000 miles. Thanks for reading!

  3. Casimir Christiansen 2024-11-17

After conducting extensive online research on Edmunds and other websites, I ultimately chose the CX-5 over the RAV-4 and the CR-V. My decision was based on factors such as horsepower, transmission, styling, and overall driving experience. I leased the vehicle in January and have already driven over 10,000 miles. I primarily use it for weekend trips and my daily commute. Currently, I am getting a combined mileage of 28, which is right in line with the sticker estimate.

  4. Domenico Turcotte 2024-11-14

The car has some issues that can be quite annoying. There is significant wind and tire noise at highway speeds, and there is also ceiling vibration noise if only the rear windows are open. The transmission automatically downshifts when slowing past 19 mph, which can be frustrating as it occurs in only about 2% of my commute. Additionally, the transmission tends not to upshift when driving uphill, meaning the driver has to manually shift or keep playing with the gas pedal. The front door armrests are not the same height as the center console armrest, which can cause discomfort. The cargo area light is placed on the side wall instead of the ceiling, which can be a bit of a glare on your eyes and doesn't light up the cargo hold as well. The rear window wiper is way louder than the front windshield wiper, even though it's only a single wiper and further away from the driver. The A-pillars are much thicker than my previous car, which can take some getting used to, especially when making turns at an intersection without traffic signals. Lastly, the front headrests are angled way too far forward, which forces the driver's head down and requires them to look up to see the road. Overall, the car has some quirks that can be frustrating, but it's still a decent vehicle. The NHTSA should consider revising this rule to make it more comfortable for taller individuals. Rear headrests can be bulky and obstruct the rear view, while side headrests could be shaped differently to provide better support. Sporty seats with side bolsters can be uncomfortable during long commutes, but aftermarket cushions can help. It would be great if automatic headlights were standard, as this technology has been around for over 20 years. Adjusting the volume can be distracting while using the backup camera, so it would be safer if this feature was improved. The A/C can be weak at times, but this could contribute to better fuel efficiency. However, the center air vents are too low and should be adjusted for better comfort. It would also be helpful if the side vents could be closed. The steering wheel looks sporty, but could be improved with more spokes for better grip. Overall, there are some areas for improvement, but the car is still a great choice. It would be great to have a pleasant audible lock/unlock confirmation beep instead of just the signal lights flashing with the initial push of the remote button and the horn blaring way too loud the second time. Additionally, it would be helpful to be able to open/close windows even after the engine is shut off, which is a feature that most other cars have. I believe these are easy fixes that should have been caught in the testing stage. While the exterior/interior color combos are rather lacking, the all-black interior doesn't look bad per se, but it can make driving during those hot summer months quite hellish. I also noticed that the interior door handles are quite far forward for the folks up front. Sliding rear seats would be a great addition. However, everything else is as awesome as everyone says. The car has above-average fuel economy, is roomy, easily looks and drives better than anything else in its class, and has been a pleasure to own/maintain thus far. I am getting close to 100,000 miles and I am still very satisfied with my purchase.

I purchased a 2014 CX-5 Grand Touring loaded with every possible feature. I was pleasantly surprised by its gas mileage, which exceeded my expectations at 28.6 mpg in the city when using cruise control. The 2.5 engine is peppy and responsive, making for a smooth and enjoyable ride. Unlike a Prius, the rear camera doesn't beep when in reverse, which I find much more pleasant. The heated seats are a nice touch on cold mornings and warm up quickly. The 9-speaker Bose stereo system is of symphony quality and effectively cancels out any minimal road noise. The navigation system (TomTom) is touchy but adequate, although I personally prefer a Garmin navigation system in the CX-5.
