2019 Mazda Cx-5 problems

The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda since 2012. A successor to both the Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7, it is Mazda's first model to feature the "Kodo" design language and the first model to be fully developed with a range of technologies branded as Skyactiv, including a rigid, lightweight platform combined with a series of engines and transmissions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
Since 2019, the CX-5 is positioned above the smaller CX-30. As of 2022, depending on the region, the CX-5 is positioned right below the larger CX-50, CX-60 or the CX-8 within Mazda's crossover SUV line-up.
The CX-5 has been the worldwide best-selling model offered by the brand every year since 2014, with record sales in 2019 when 444,262 units were sold globally. As of March 2022, cumulative sales of the CX-5 has reached around 3.5 million vehicles.

Common 2019 Mazda Cx-5 problems
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues primarily revolve around the engine, electrical system, and cruise control.
- Engine Problems: Some owners have reported engine-related issues, such as the engine not shutting down properly or not starting at all. In some cases, the engine would rev and clunk into gear when stopped. These issues can be potentially serious and may require significant repairs or replacement of engine components.
- Electrical System Problems: Complaints about the electrical system include daytime running LED light failure, which was so prevalent that Mazda had to issue a recall. The LED running lights typically last for around 100k miles, but in the case of the 2016 CX-5, they failed earlier. Additionally, windshield issues have been reported, with the windshield cracking for no apparent reason. This issue warranted a recall from Mazda, as the windshield bracket for the laser sensor may detach and disable the Smart City Brake Support system.
- Cruise Control Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the cruise control system, such as unexpected acceleration while the brakes were applied. This issue can be potentially dangerous, as it may lead to accidents or loss of control over the vehicle.
It is important to note that these issues are based on complaints from owners, and not all 2019 Mazda CX-5 vehicles may experience these problems. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision. It is also recommended to have any used vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic before purchasing to identify any potential issues or needed repairs.
Are there any problems with the 2019 Mazda CX-5?
Premature brake wear is the most common complaint from 2019 Mazda CX-5 owners in the first 20,000 miles. There are reports of noise from the brake pads at around 15,000 miles, and if you don't replace them quickly you may need new rotors by 20,000 miles.
How many miles will a 2019 Mazda CX-5 last?
The Mazda CX-5 crossover is another popular model that is known for lasting a long time. With proper maintenance, the CX-5 can give you between 200,000 and 250,000 miles and a lifespan between 13 and 17 years. Mazda's flagship vehicle is the CX-9. This four-door SUV offers a stylish design and luxurious interior.
Are there any recalls on 2019 Mazda CX-5?

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
- VIN: JM3KFBCM2K1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have 115k miles on my 2019 CX5. Never has any issues. Now all of a sudden I have a cracked cylinder head leaking oil. I was smelling smoke but mot seeing it. I took into dealership they noticed oil dripping thus why smell. Its a $4500-5000 job. I cannot afford this. This should not happen at this kind of mileage. My warranty just expired too. Mazda needs to cover these type of repairs
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-14
- VIN: JM3KFADM4K1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle starting stalling, check engine light would come on, and the vehicle would slipped into “limp mode” while traveling on the freeway. I was amount in two auto collisions because of the vehicle slowing down in the middle of the highway. The problem started in August 2023 and was towed to the dealer on one occasions and towed to my home on another occasion. The dealer ran a diagnostic and said it was the brand new battery I had installed and then the catalytic converter. After repairing both; the vehicle proceeded to not drive over 30 miles per hour. The dealer said it was the engine and then said it was something else. I’ve expressed that the symptoms are those more aligned to the PCM issue recalled on 2019. A actual diagnostic report from Auto Zone supports this. The vehicle has also been inspected by another Mazda dealer and a stand alone mechanic.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
- VIN: JM3KFBCM5K1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Car failed while on highway driving 60 mph with the engine and power steering turning off instantly. A day prior the dash was blinking warnings. Mazda of Lodi replaced the entire transmission plus other parts. Just made it under warrantee. Would have cost 5k once expired.was told half the fleet of 2019 were recalled but not the second half of production for some reason even though they both experience the same failure.. also had 22,000 miles at end of the. Something smells in Denmark
ENGINE PROBLEM

- VIN: JM3KFBDM1K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: At 49k miles and 4 months out of warranty, the car began leaking oil and smelling like smoke. The dealer diagnosed with a cracked cylinder head and repaired it.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
- VIN: JM3KFBEY9K0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Infotainment screen malfunctions, pressing buttons by itself.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- VIN: JM3KFBDY1K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: CX5 Cylinder head cracked at 53,500 miles. Was driving when received engine overheating and pull over immediately warning. The car smelled like maple syrup as it was engine coolant burning. Took it to the dealership and they informed me of the cylinder failure. It is currently awaiting parts and its not under warranty.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
- VIN: JM3KFABMXK1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Cracked cylinder head requiring replacement at 62,000 miles.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
- VIN: JM3KFBEYXK0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While driving, I received a warning that the engine in my car was overheating. Upon arriving home and parking, I noticed pooling under the car. My car was due for an oil change so the next day I dropped off the car for the oil change and mentioned the overheating message and leak to the technician thinking the fix would be routine. To my surprise, I was told my vehicle had a serious coolant leak related to a cracked cylinder. I was advised to take the vehicle to a Mazda dealer. Morrie's Mazda in Minnetonka, MN confirmed the cracked cylinder head which required a full engine replacement despite the car being only ~5 years old and having ~63,000 miles. Mazda had issued a technical service bulletin on this issue but had not issued a recall. As a result, I was left with a large repair bill to replace the engine in a relatively new car. This is a serious issue and I feel Mazda put my life and others in jeopardy by not recalling vehicles and letting customers drive with the risk of the engine overheating.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
- VIN: JM3KFBDM4K0
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The infotainment system ghost touches on its own. It changes all car settings by itself. Active driving display, safety features like distance recognition, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, etc. Every setting available in the infotainment system gets changed or reset on it own. Even when you turn it off. It turns back on. GPS routes, dials people, hangs up, mutes on its own, etc. Mazda dealership says it’s out of warranty and I would have to pay out of pocket to fix it. However it is an ongoing issue where now there is a class action lawsuit.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: JM3KFBDY3K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Coolant leaks at cylinder head on 2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve. Mazda North American Operations released a technical service bulletin (01-013/21) regarding 2016-2020 Mazda CX-5, CX-9, and Mazda6 with SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines. This issue can cause the engine to leak coolant, overheat, and stall, potentially leaving the driver and passengers stranded in an unsafe location. Mazda is aware of this manufacturing defect but has not recalled these engines to be repaired or replaced if they are outside of their manufacturers warranty period and placing costly repairs and potentially life-threatening situations as the responsibility to their customers. The diagnosis to repair this issue is a replacement of the cylinder head/sleeve or replacement of the engine block, which has since been modified by Mazda to resolve this issue. This is a costly repair for diagnostics, labor hours, and parts and Mazda is refusing to be held responsible for these defects outside of the power train warranty period. Mazda customer support advised this will only be potentially covered if diagnostics are completed at a Mazda dealership and does not provide any assistance if the customer uses a non-Mazda affiliated repair shop. Messaging on the dash console advised excessive heat and thermostat was nearing 260°F
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- VIN: JM3KFBDM3K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Started smelling smoke randomly and discovered an apparent oil leak in the engine. Mechanic inspected and noted that it appears to be an issue relating to the cylinder head/head gasket, which is in line with a technical services bulletin put out by Mazda several years ago for this make/model/year for a known design flaw that can result in catastrophic engine failure. I am just outside the five year warranty but well under the 60,000 miles, so expecting them to tell me they won't cover the repair even though this should have been a recall due to the potential outcome. I cannot drive the vehicle until this is repaired because it can cause engine fires (or worse).
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- VIN: JM3KFBDY4K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: There is a coolant leak at the cylinder head. We have been told that the cylinder is cracked at the back of the cylinder head where the exhaust ports meet. The dealer's technician said there is a "redesign" in the cylinder head. This is a known issue that is a defect apparently due to Mazda's design of securing the turbo on exhaust studs that are not designed to hold the weight. Why has there not been a recall? There is a Mazda TSB - 01-013/21, issued 10/15/2021 Verbal estimate from dealer for repair - over $7,000
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
- VIN: JM3KFBCM7K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My vehicle started smoking and I smelled a oil burning smell coming through the vents. I took it to the Mazda dealership and they diagnosed it with a cracked cylinder head. The repair estimate is $4,900. It is a 2019 with less than 60,000 miles, but it is a few months out of the powertrain warranty. However, this is a KNOWN issue to Mazda. As I have been researching online, many Mazda CX-5 owners have reported the same issue and I believe Mazda has traced it back to defective manufacturing in a batch of these parts. My local mechanic has also told us that he has seen this issue with 2019 Mazda CX-5s and recommended we report them. Mazda SHOULD issue a recall, but I understand that is expensive for them. At the very least, they should alerting drivers to this possibility and voluntarily repairing these cylinders without cost to unsuspecting drivers who could end up with an engine fire. I have submitted a complaint to Mazda customer service and I am awaiting a response.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-23
- VIN: JM3KFBDM7K1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I am writing to express serious concerns regarding the recent service that occurred on November 14th, 2023. Due to the service's failure and negligence, Luther Brookdale Mazda has jeopardized the safety and well-being of my family members. On [XXX], my 2019 CX-5 was towed from Monticello, Minnesota, to the dealership in Brooklyn Center around 9 pm. While returning from [XXX] dinner in St. Cloud on [XXX] , a sudden warning appeared on the dashboard: "Engine Coolant Temperature High. Stop the vehicle immediately in a safe place." Upon receiving this notification, we pulled over to the shoulder and observed smoke emanating from the engine bay. We promptly turned off the vehicle. Concerned for our safety, we contacted our family to pick us up and had the vehicle towed by AAA. As we awaited the tow truck's arrival, we noticed coolant had sprayed all over the engine under the hood, and the engine cover was missing. Furthermore, the coolant reservoir was below the minimum threshold. This particular issue is the reason I brought the vehicle in for service the week prior, regarding insufficient coolant temperature. It was evident from the state of the engine bay that the dealership failed to follow proper protocol. This lack of oversight likely resulted in damage to the engine and other essential vehicle components, leading to the total loss of the car. I am deeply disappointed by the lack of care and attention to detail in the service provided. This negligence also compromised my family's safety. Moreover, what was meant to be a festive holiday was marred due to the disregard for my property. I have been a loyal customer at Luther Mazda Brooklyn Park for several years, and I am shocked by the incident that has transpired. We have approached the dealer with the issue and they are continue to articulate that there is no engine damage, but with the ongoing class action lawsuit, I am extremely skeptical of their claims. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: JM3KFBCM1K1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The display screen appears to initiate "ghost actions". It will change songs, put phone calls on mute/hang up, change display settings etc. on its own. I looked this issue up online and it seems to be very common with 2017 and newer Mazdas. I took it to the Mazda dealership and they wanted to charge me $150 for a diagnosis and another $500 for a screen repair. I decided not to do it because all of the threads online stated that this didn't fix the issue so no diagnosis was made. It doesn't put me at extreme risk but it is very distracting when I am using maps or CarPlay.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: JM3KFBCM8K1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The INFO touchscreen randomly activates itself (the commonly reported "ghost screen" problem that occurs due to defective coating on touchscreen) which cause settings and selections to change uncontrollably, including placing phone calls, etc. This is very distracting and hazardous for this to randomly happen while operating the vehicle.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: JM3KFBDMXK0
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The main display has failed and/or malfunctioned regularly. Lighting systems for vehicle navigation system has been impacted and HUD lighting and visibility have been impacted. My safety and the safety of my passengers have been put at risk because of distraction and vehicle navigation malfunctions. The component has not yet been inspected. There were no other problems prior to failure. The first incident of this occurred several months to a year ago. This has been a continuous issue. The date provided below is simply to indicate that this has been occurring for an extended period of time.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: JM3KFABM5K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: This report is for a 2019 Mazda CX-5 with the Naturally Aspirated/Non-Turbo engine. This vehicle only has 26,500 miles and has developed a major oil leak from a cracked Cylinder Head. The continued safety of the vehicle has been degraded. The engine could seize while driving making the vehicle inoperable while on roadways. The vehicle has been inspected and confirmed by both an independent service center and by an authorized dealer service center. The only warning lamp that appeared was a low oil light. I immediately pulled over for safety and inspected the oil levels of the engine. I determined the engine oil levels were just below the fill line on the dip stick. I then added approximately half a quart of recommended oil and the oil warning light turned off. I then contacted a local service center for diagnostics of the problem. They determined the cause of the oil leak which was a Cracked Cylinder Head on the Engine. I then drove the vehicle to an authorized Mazda service center at the dealership. They also diagnosed the problem as a Cracked Cylinder Head on the Engine. Both the independent service center and the authorized Mazda service center recommended a full Engine replacement.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-31
- VIN: JM3KFACM8K0
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I have a 2019 CX5 Mazda that consistently leaks oil and smokes. After taking it to a mechanic, I learned that this is a known Mazda issue, but because my car is under warranty, they won't help me. The Cylinder head is pours, and my mechanic said even if he replaces it, it will happen again due to the design. After I have checked online, it seems that MANY people have this issue from 2018-2021. Mazda even made TSB #SA-031-21 to cover some of this issue but no recall. As mentioned, my car leaks oil everyday, and I have to constantly put oil in just to keep it from burning up. It smokes really bad, but I cannot afford a new car or afford to pay over $3K to get this fixed, or don't understand why they won't fix it if they know it was poor design???
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- VIN: JM3KFBCM3K1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: UNKNOWN. Vehicle stalls and jumps when I step on the gas pedal or try to increase speed.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
- VIN: JM3KFACM8K1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Mazda infotainment system experiences ghost touching. It would operate on its own and exit applications like navigation on its own. Mazda is aware of the issue but won’t issue a recall. This can be a safety hazard when the system exits out of navigation in the middle of nowhere. The system would also make calls on its own which would cause a panic to the driver who is distracted trying to end a call they never placed.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: JM3KFBDM1K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle was smoking. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that there was oil leaking from the main gasket and referred the contact to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
- VIN: JM3KFBDM4K0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The 2019 Mazda CX5 GT started to make a clicking noise coming from the engine. After much investigation online, sharing multiple resources of videos and sound this seems to be the hydraulic lash adjusters for this specific year and model. Unfortunately this is outside the normal warranty and wasn't noticed until now. The car was inspected by local independent service center. This would pose risk to my family and others if the vehicle seized to work properly. There were no warnings given other than the clicking noise and inspected.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- VIN: JM3KFBCM0K1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The video display board does not work properly. It randomly changes settings while driving and is very distracting and does not allow the GPS to work properly. It changes radio and display settings and any setting prev set. It cycles through them and randomly changes them The dealer (Kings Mazda in Cincinnati Ohio) stated that this is happening frequently in Mazdas and will cost over $400 for an after market fix and over $1000 for a Mazda fix. It is VERY distracting while driving
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
- VIN: JM3KFBDY6K0

Negative 2019 Mazda Cx-5 car reviews
Positive 2019 Mazda Cx-5 car reviews

We absolutely loved the Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring! After comparing it to similarly-equipped models from Honda, Subaru, Toyota, and Nissan, we found that none of them could match its superior handling, interior layout, and features. The Mazda CX-5's active driving display, iActiveSense safety features, BOSE sound system, and 40/20/40 rear fold-down seats were the standout features for us.
-
I'm so glad you love your car! The 2019 signature edition in Machine Gray sounds like a great choice. It's awesome that you did your research and found that the CX-5 had everything you were looking for in a compact luxury SUV. The car's handling and acceleration sound amazing, and the luxury features like the heads up driving display, heated/vented front and rear seats, and heated steering wheel are definitely a plus. It's a shame that the infotainment system is a bit sluggish, but overall it sounds like you made a great purchase and are really happy with your decision!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2019 CX5 Signature Diesel in the soul red paint. I've driven close to 7,000 miles on it since I bought it at the end of May. I previously had a 2016.5 GT CX5 but needed an AWD due to moving to a new state where it would be necessary. I considered a few other cars, including the RAV4 Hybrid, Kia Seltos (which was smaller but brand new), and even the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport (which has the brand's only 10-year/100,000 mile warranty) but I have to say, the Mazda is a much superior driver's car to all of those. I feel like most Americans don't seem to appreciate them, but that's a good thing because it feels like you can always strike a deal on them. For this one, there were huge discounts on this model (the MSRP on mine was $41,680 but after discounts and available rebates, my purchase price ended up being just over $29,000); it was too good of a deal to pass up on. Although I stayed with a CX5, I've found this one to be even more comfortable than my other one. I can still say that after having driven it nearly cross country this summer. It drives just as well, taking corners with ease and accelerating decently but this signature version has much more comfortable seating than did my 2016.5. This version of the car also has just about every feature you can think of, from ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, endless safety features, automatic opening of the back, etc. One thing I absolutely love is that this car is killing its estimated MPG rating most of the time. I drive about 150 miles each week for work and driving on hilly (but not steep uphill) roads between 65 and 75 mph, I've gotten as high as 40 MPG, with 37-38 MPG being most frequent, meaning I can get between 450 and 500 miles in each tank. For a non-hybrid AWD, this is killing it and it's way over the estimated rating of about 30 MPG. I hope this helps you in your search for a new car. Let me know if you have any questions! The infotainment system has a slow startup and unfortunately, the touchscreen cannot be used while the vehicle is in motion, rendering the navigation almost completely useless. Additionally, the volume of anything played on the phone over the car's speakers is quite low, which can be unpleasant. The warning system is also overly sensitive, especially when using cruise control, which can make it more of a hindrance than a help. Furthermore, it seems that Mazda dealers are not aware that this diesel version was sold with two years or 30,000 miles of free service and maintenance, which can lead to some hassle when taking it in for service. Another drawback of this particular model is that there are so few of them that getting basic things like an oil change can take forever and cost nearly $100. Hopefully, there will be some resale value, which has been a drawback with Mazdas in the past. For instance, my 2010 Mazda 3 Touring with 60,000 miles on it and kept in solid condition only got an offer of $2,500 when I was buying my 2016.5 CX5. My 2016.5 CX5 did a little better, but that was also at the height of the time for used cars in general, and the dealer sold it in less than a week for almost $5K above what they bought it from me for.

I purchased my CX-5 Signature a year ago on 12/15/18 and it has been a great car with a few minor flaws. Full disclosure, I am a big fan of Mazda and my family has owned several over the past 18 years. I traded in my 07 Mazda 6i 5-door with 168,000 trouble-free miles and it was a great car. I had my eye on a CX-5 as a replacement for the last few years and with the new Signature model, we test drove and bought it. I love the value and luxury for the money. Compared to my wife's 2015 CX-5, this is like a starship and my old car. I've put 14,500 miles on it in the last year and it has an MPG of 22-24 in the city and 28-30 on the interstate. I love the power of the Turbo engine (uses regular gas) and the radar cruise control. It is very quiet compared to my wife's car and is great for long trips and winter weather. It feels and compares to CUV's costing $10,000-15,000 more, for around $38,000. As for flaws, I wish the dark brown leather was lighter, more saddle or light brown color. I miss the CD player and the 5-disc player. I have to put my CDs on a flash drive. The Infotainment software is slow and I've had to reset my Satellite radio favorite stations a few times. The controller dial takes time, but I don't like touch screens, find them hard to use when I'm moving. The nav system is unnecessary and useless if you have a good smartphone. I use the phone instead. Overall, it's a very good CUV, and I expect it to be reliable like my previous Mazda. I hope to travel more in it after I retire. After 2 years, I still feel the same. It's a great car and value for the money. I've got almost 32,000 trouble-free miles on it and I am very pleased with it. I would recommend it to anyone and buy it again. 🙂

I spent two years researching for a replacement for my Toyota Rav4 V6 Sport. I was looking for a similar sized SUV that had decent power and was fun to drive. I was having trouble finding anything except German makes (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) that came close and I did NOT want a CVT transmission like what came with many Japanese choices. However, I knew the Mazda CX-5 met most of my criteria with one big exception. The power and resulting 0-60 time was not enough for the fun I wanted to have when driving it. When the 250HP Turbo engine was offered, I was very relieved. I read all I could find on it and then did a test drive. One drive and I was sold. A week later, I bought one. I have had my CX-5 for 7 months and I can confidently say that it has exceeded my expectations. Here are some of the reasons why:PROS:- 310 Lb Ft of torque give it low end punch- It is a blast to drive in all situations- Sport mode raises the fun factor by 50%- The interior is VERY high quality- The safety tech is great and functional- The design is attractive and different from most- The seats are very comfortable- The control knob/joy-stick screen controller is slick- The cabin is quiet and the engine sound is pleasing- There aren't a million of them on the road (like CRV & Rav4)CONS:- The factory tires are junk, I replaced them at 600 miles- I mounted high performance all season replacements in size 245-50/R19- The new (wider) tires are the same overall dia. with same ride & speedometer readings- The display screen is slow to load and has just OK graphic quality- Rear camera clarity suffers because of the graphic quality- Rear seat room is just adequate and suited best for short trips onlyOverall, the few negatives are insignificant compared to all the positives this vehicle has. Mazda has a strong quality record over the past 8-10 years and is approaching that of Toyota and Honda. If you're looking for a fun-to-drive SUV that is high-quality and safe, the CX-5 is definitely worth considering.

I purchased my 2019 CX-5 four months ago, which is a Touring model with the sunroof/Bose package. Although the Grand Touring's lower profile tires made the ride too rough for me, I found my car to be beautifully designed and well-trimmed. At first, I was very happy with my purchase, but I quickly started experiencing acceleration issues, especially when the car was rolling, such as after turning a corner or merging onto a freeway. Initially, I thought it was just me and not a problem with the car. However, I later received a recall notice related to the cylinder deactivation system, which I thought was causing my issue. The recall was performed, but unfortunately, it did not solve the problem. I took my car in for repair, and the service manager informed me that there was no resolution. He explained that all the models with the base engine drive like this because of the deactivation system. He suggested that I take a really long test drive the next time I buy a car (he said it very nicely) and to keep checking back for software updates. Although stop and go traffic can be challenging with the lags and surges, I appreciate the service manager's advice and will keep it in mind for my next purchase.

The CX-5 had some issues during my ownership, including a coolant explosion at 2k miles that required a new engine. However, Mazda was quick to investigate the issue and shipped the engine back for root cause analysis. While they did not replace the car, they did provide a newly mated engine to the chassis. The dealer was unable to help, but did offer to sell me a new car and take the old one in on trade at a large loss. Despite some internal rattling, I eventually decided to sell the vehicle and upgrade to a Tesla Y. Interestingly, the dealership reported multiple engine failures with the CX-5, which was not surprising. Overall, my experience with Mazda was mixed, but I appreciate their efforts to address the issue with my car.

I recently purchased my first Mazda after owning several Honda's and a few Acura's. The vehicle is undeniably stylish and offers a fun driving experience. With above-average acceleration and handling, it's a comfortable and quiet ride that returns an impressive 27 to 29 mpg in mixed driving. However, the infotainment system is a major drawback. It's incredibly buggy and often unresponsive, making it difficult to change channels or connect to SiriusXM radio. The dealership experience was also disappointing, with poor service and a lack of attention to detail. Despite these issues, I remain confident in my decision to lease this vehicle and look forward to exploring other options when the lease is up.

This car has a lot of great features, but it's important to note that there have been some issues with the windshield. If you don't mind having to fix rock chips or replace the windshield every six months, then there's nothing bad to say about it. However, I have had some trouble with my 2019 model - I'm already on my third windshield and have had to fix five rock chips so far. In my 35 years of driving and owning nine cars, I've only had to fix one rock chip, so this is definitely something to consider.

I recently purchased a 2019 CX-5 Signature with 41,000 miles from a local dealer in Boise, ID. Unfortunately, one of the headlights was out, but the dealer kindly replaced it before I made the purchase. However, just 1,000 miles later, the other headlight went out and I was disappointed to find out that the part alone costs over $1,000! According to several Mazda dealership websites, the LED headlights are designed to last 15 years or 10,000 to 30,000 hours of use. It's frustrating that both headlights failed well before this and despite several calls to their 'Customer Experience' number, Mazda has not been able to help me. The total cost with labor to replace both headlights is $3,600 and they will likely go out again at 80,000 miles. While I'm disappointed with the quality of the headlights, I would still recommend considering a Mazda for your next car purchase.
