Mazda Cx-5 problems
The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda since 2012. A successor to both the Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7, it is Mazda's first model to feature the "Kodo" design language and the first model to be fully developed with a range of technologies branded as Skyactiv, including a rigid, lightweight platform combined with a series of engines and transmissions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
Since 2019, the CX-5 is positioned above the smaller CX-30. As of 2022, depending on the region, the CX-5 is positioned right below the larger CX-50, CX-60 or the CX-8 within Mazda's crossover SUV line-up.
The CX-5 has been the worldwide best-selling model offered by the brand every year since 2014, with record sales in 2019 when 444,262 units were sold globally. As of March 2022, cumulative sales of the CX-5 has reached around 3.5 million vehicles.

Common Problems with Mazda CX-5 Cars
The Mazda CX-5 is a popular compact crossover SUV, known for its luxury features and affordable price. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Daytime Running LED Light Failure: This issue is particularly common in the 2016 Mazda CX-5, with an average cost to fix of $1,000 and typically occurring around 45,000 miles. The daytime running lights fail, which can be a significant safety concern.
- Unexplained Acceleration While Brakes Were Applied: This problem has been reported in the 2019 Mazda CX-5, with an average cost to fix of $2,600 and typically occurring around 14,000 miles. This can be a serious safety issue, as it can lead to loss of control of the vehicle.
- Windshield Easily Cracks/Divots: This issue has been reported in the 2015 Mazda CX-5, with an average cost to fix of $700 and typically occurring around 26,000 miles. The windshield can crack or divot easily, which can be a safety concern and also an annoyance for drivers.
- Faulty Ignition Coils: This was a common problem in the early models of the CX-5, particularly in the first generation (2012-2016). Many owners reported losing power while driving, which can be a significant safety concern.
- Control Short Circuit: This issue can cause the engine to cut out and reduce brake assistance. It has been reported in the 2012 to 2017 CX-5 models, with an average quote for electrical fault diagnostics of £61.49.
- Daytime Running Lamps Flickering: This issue has been reported in the CX-5 models, and can be caused by an electrical fault within the vehicle. It can result in the daytime LED running lights flickering or failing completely.
- Fuel Pump Impeller Failure: This issue can cause fuel pump failure, and has been reported in the 2012 to 2017 CX-5 models. The average quote for engine light diagnostics and repair for this issue stands at £57.53.
- Headlight Problems: This issue has been reported in the Mazda CX-5, where a defect in the LED or high-intensity discharge headlights can cause the lenses to appear milky white, reducing lighting ability.
- Handbrake Problems: This issue has been reported in the Mazda CX-5, where the handbrake can randomly engage itself without any manual influence. This can pose a risk to the driver and others on the road.
- Transmission Problems: Both the Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5 models have been noted for a string of transmission issues, including shifter vibration and other problems. These issues have been attributed to SKYACTIV Technology, which Mazda uses in these models.
These are just some of the common problems reported by Mazda CX-5 owners. It's important to note that not all vehicles of this model will experience these issues, and many will run smoothly without any problems. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.
What is the major problem of the Mazda CX-5?
We recommend staying away from the 2014 and 2016 Mazda CX-5. These recorded more complaints compared to the 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 model years. The most common complaints cover electrical problems, engine problems, interior accessories, and issues with the lights.
Is the Mazda CX-5 a reliable vehicle?
In our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, the CX-5 (in diesel form) ranked 10th out of 24 cars in the large SUV class with an overall score of 94.6%. Petrol models came 16th with a score of 92.9%.
What is the weakness of the Mazda CX-5?
Noise isolation is the weak point of the Mazda CX-5. In the first models, the noise from the engine did not make it possible to talk in the cabin. After re-styling, the sound insulation was slightly improved, but the crossover is still far from competitors in this indicator.
Does Mazda CX-5 have transmission problems?
Among the most reported problems with Mazda CX-5 is transmission-related issues. Some owners have experienced jerky shifts, hesitation during acceleration, or even complete transmission failure. This could be attributed to faulty transmission control modules or clutch problems.

Mazda Cx-5 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: JM3KFBCM2K1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have 115k miles on my 2019 CX5. Never has any issues. Now all of a sudden I have a cracked cylinder head leaking oil. I was smelling smoke but mot seeing it. I took into dealership they noticed oil dripping thus why smell. Its a $4500-5000 job. I cannot afford this. This should not happen at this kind of mileage. My warranty just expired too. Mazda needs to cover these type of repairs
Mazda Cx-5 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: JM3KE2CY8G0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Front windshield wipers stopped working, front windshield washer still working. Fuse was checked, fuse is good.Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety is put at risk because of lack of visibility when driving in rain. The problem has been confirmed by a Mazda dealership. The vehicle and the components have been inspected by a Mazda dealership. No warning lights or messages appeared before or after the front windshield wipers stopped working. So if a person is driving the car, there is no indication that the front windshield wipers will not work if it starts raining and the driver would need to use the front windshield wipers. This is a safety hazard because the driver will not be able to see, possibly causing an accident. This Mazda CX5 does not have automatic front windshield wipers (they do not come on automatically when it starts raining).

Mazda Cx-5 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
- VIN: JM3KFADM4K1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle starting stalling, check engine light would come on, and the vehicle would slipped into “limp mode” while traveling on the freeway. I was amount in two auto collisions because of the vehicle slowing down in the middle of the highway. The problem started in August 2023 and was towed to the dealer on one occasions and towed to my home on another occasion. The dealer ran a diagnostic and said it was the brand new battery I had installed and then the catalytic converter. After repairing both; the vehicle proceeded to not drive over 30 miles per hour. The dealer said it was the engine and then said it was something else. I’ve expressed that the symptoms are those more aligned to the PCM issue recalled on 2019. A actual diagnostic report from Auto Zone supports this. The vehicle has also been inspected by another Mazda dealer and a stand alone mechanic.
Mazda Cx-5 2017

Mazda Cx-5 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
- VIN: JM3KFBCL5H0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Twice now, my 2017 Mazda CX-5 stalled on the highway with a check engine light popping up--both times was driving around 60-70mph for a couple of hours and had about a quarter tank of gas left. The first time, no code was found, but the second time, after a deeper diagnostic, the dealership found a P0192 code. After reading here and many other places online, based on the code and the car's behavior, it really sounds like the Denso low-pressure fuel pump is to blame; that's the source of the recall for 2018 and 2019 Mazda CX-5s experiencing this same issue [XXX] ). If the 2017 model also uses that fuel pump, why isn't it included in the recall? If this dangerous and erratic car behavior is due to a faulty part, it really should be covered by the recall. Shame on you, Mazda. Lives are at risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Vehicle year: 2019
Congratulations on your new 2019 CX-5 with the touring preferred package! It's great to hear that you've had the car for almost three months now and are ready to share your review. From your experience, the car seems to be quite peppy when you need the acceleration, and the shift points are set up higher than most competitors at around 4,000 rpm. The car shifts smoothly with no jerking or hesitation, and the front bucket seats are very comfortable once you get used to them. They are European influenced from Audi and practically wrap around your body. The car has a stiff suspension, which makes it corner wonderfully, and the steering is very responsive with no mushy feeling. However, the ride can be a little bumpy, so if a smooth ride is important, you might want to look at the CR-V. On the plus side, the Bose speaker system is wonderful, and the sound is evenly balanced, filling the car with music. The car comes with Android Auto, but it's advisable to try your phone with the car before you buy. You mentioned that your phone, which is four years old, would not sync up with the car, and the dealer gave you a free navigation package to make up for it. The Infotainment screen mounts on the top of the dashboard and is touch sensitive, but the car comes with a wheel on the center console which can be used to control everything. You found this to be easier to use, and there's also a volume knob on the console, which is a big plus. This is a big advantage over Honda, which does not have this. There are also buttons that can get you from music to navigation to favorites with one touch. The wipers can be set to automatic, and they will then speed up or slow down depending on the amount of rain. The side collision warning lights up on the side view mirrors and is easy to see, and verbal alerts sound if you start to change lanes. Thank you for sharing your review with us!The rear backup camera is decent, but it tends to accumulate rain on the lens during rainy weather, which can blur the picture. This can be a bit frustrating. However, the backup warning system is excellent. It alerts you if something is about to cross behind you and can even detect pedestrians. A visual warning will appear on your dashboard instruments to show you where the danger is. The car's traction in heavy rain is not great, but this may be due to the Yokohama tires that came with the car. I plan to switch to Michelins when these wear out. On the other hand, the LED headlights are superb. I didn't realize how little of the road I was actually seeing in my old car until I got these headlights. They illuminate the entire road, both sides! The one thing Mazda could have done better with this car is the storage pockets on the doors. They are stylish but too shallow to hold anything larger than a piece of notebook paper. It's a minor issue, but Mazda should have addressed it. The car came with Homelink equipment to open your garage door, which was a bit of a hassle to set up with my garage door opener, but I haven't had any issues with it since then. The button to open your garage door is mounted on the rearview mirror, but unfortunately, it doesn't illuminate at night, so you have to feel your way along the edge of the mirror until you find the button. The exterior of the car is where Mazda really hit a home run. The front hood is raked forward over the front grill to give it an aggressive look, unlike the bland CR-V, which is rounded back. The rear of the car bulges out a little and holds the taillights. If you get the preferred package, the liftgate is powered and opens with just one touch. The color selection is a little different, with silver being standard and white costing an extra $200. At first, I thought this was a ripoff, but I stand corrected. The pearl white with a little metallic in it is stunning. When you park it next to a white car from a different company, it makes the other car look dingy. I think it's well worth the money! If you really want to splurge, you can get the metallic red for an additional $800. Overall, you'll be very happy with the car. We will see how it holds up over the years, but you can rest easy knowing that you have the extended warranty.

Vehicle year: 2017
I shopped around different brands and after test driving, comparing features, and considering my trade-in, I had my heart set on a Honda CRV Touring. However, since the Honda is the best selling small SUV, there were no incentives available and I couldn't get the exterior and interior colors I wanted. So, I decided to go with my second choice, the Mazda CX 5. I have to say, I am not disappointed at all. Although it has a lot of tech features that take some time to learn, the Mazda rides better, handles better, gets better mpg, and has better tech than my previous car, a 2015 Volvo XC 60. I am confident that I will enjoy driving this SUV for many years to come. If you haven't considered a Mazda, you definitely should. It's a beautiful vehicle that is fun to drive!

Vehicle year: 2018
My 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring has had some electrical issues in the past, but they have been resolved and I have not experienced any further problems. Despite these initial setbacks, I am confident in the quality and reliability of my vehicle. I have driven it for 7000 miles and it has proven to be a solid car with sufficient power. Although I have had some trouble adjusting the seat to my liking, I still enjoy driving it. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and trust that my Mazda CX-5 will continue to perform well.

Vehicle year: 2021
I recently leased a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring from Byers Mazda on Billingsly Road in Dublin, OH. The vehicle has been working great so far. I decided to upgrade from my 2018 Mazda 3 hatchback due to hip and back pain, and I have found this new car to be much more comfortable and easier to get in and out of, especially during long drives. I have already noticed a difference in the short time I've driven it. The vehicle has many advanced safety features that I didn't even know existed, which makes me feel extra safe while driving. The ride is smooth, quiet, and the car runs great! This is my third Mazda, and even after looking at other brands, I still chose Mazda. They offer great quality vehicles, sales, and service!

Vehicle year: 2024
The Mazda CX-5 is a fantastic car that is well-built and handles beautifully. It is equally at home on city streets and highways, making it a versatile choice for any driver. The interior is thoughtfully designed, with an easy-to-read dashboard instrument display (I have the analogue display) and comfortable seating that can be adjusted for legroom, height, lumbar support, and the steering wheel. The cargo capacity is typical for a vehicle of this size. The Mazda Connect feature offers a wide range of entertainment and Bluetooth options that are too numerous to mention, including GPS and music streaming from your cell phone. The Mazda Connect display screen is large and easy to see without obstructing the view through the windshield. The backup camera activates when reverse gear is selected, providing a clear view of the area behind the car, and there are alerts for objects in the vicinity of the car, such as blind spots. I gave this car 4 stars (I would give it 4.5 stars if I could) because I have some very minor critiques. Firstly, the brake and accelerator pedals are close to each other and take some getting used to. Secondly, there is no clock displayed unless the Mazda Connect feature is on. It would have been nice to have a separate clock display that turns on when the car is started. However, these are small issues, and my overall experience with the CX-5 has been excellent. I am extremely happy with this car.

Hey there! I wanted to let you know about some issues that Mazda has been having with their brakes over the past few years. Recently, the Mazda 3 and 30 were recalled due to loose hardware in the Caliber, and earlier models of the CX5 have had some brake problems as well. Unfortunately, I had a scary experience with my CX5 when it failed to stop and I ended up hitting a building. Even though my car only had 3,000 miles on it, the calipers were damaged and the rotors were worn out. Mazda initially tried to blame me for the issue, but I know I'm a good driver and I wanted to make sure others are aware of these problems. Stay safe out there!

We have experienced some issues with the transmission on our new 2022 CX-5, which has required a couple of visits to the dealer. After some persistence, Mazda has approved the replacement of the transmission under warranty, which is now scheduled to take place in 5 weeks. While we have also noticed some weakness and loudness in the engine, and have found the infotainment system to be less user-friendly than we would like, we do appreciate the nice look of the car and its interior. We hope that these issues will be resolved with the new transmission, and we remain optimistic about our future experiences with Mazda.
Noel Little 2025-11-11

This car has a lot of potential, but the transmission mapping could use some improvement. I have the larger 2.5L engine with the 6-speed automatic transmission and live on a hill, but most of my driving is on flat terrain. While the transmission mapping is part of the Skyactive technology and generally shifts to the highest possible gear for better fuel economy, it tends to struggle when driving up a hill. It requires a significant amount of throttle to downshift, which can make the car feel luggy and difficult to drive smoothly. I've found that shifting manually while driving up the hill gives me more control over the shift points. While the transmission is adaptive and adjusts to your driving style over time, the gear spacing between 32 and 40 miles per hour is too broad. Adding one or two additional gears in this speed range would greatly benefit the car. Overall, while the transmission mapping could use some improvement, the car has a lot of potential and is a great choice for moderate driving. It's really a shame, because all other aspects of this vehicle are really good. Steering and brake feel are outstanding, and this car really is fun to drive--over flat terrain. However, when you enter a hill, the entire package falls apart due to the transmission.

The brakes on this vehicle wear out quickly, with substandard rotors. In comparison, the brakes on our Rav 4 lasted for 54,000 miles and are still at 90% capacity. It is clear that the brakes on this vehicle require improvement.
Jacinto Prohaska 2025-11-05
