Mazda Cx-5 problems

The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda since 2012. A successor to both the Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7, it is Mazda's first model to feature the "Kodo" design language and the first model to be fully developed with a range of technologies branded as Skyactiv, including a rigid, lightweight platform combined with a series of engines and transmissions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
Since 2019, the CX-5 is positioned above the smaller CX-30. As of 2022, depending on the region, the CX-5 is positioned right below the larger CX-50, CX-60 or the CX-8 within Mazda's crossover SUV line-up.
The CX-5 has been the worldwide best-selling model offered by the brand every year since 2014, with record sales in 2019 when 444,262 units were sold globally. As of March 2022, cumulative sales of the CX-5 has reached around 3.5 million vehicles.

Common Problems with Mazda CX-5 Cars
The Mazda CX-5 is a popular compact crossover SUV, known for its luxury features and affordable price. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Daytime Running LED Light Failure: This issue is particularly common in the 2016 Mazda CX-5, with an average cost to fix of $1,000 and typically occurring around 45,000 miles. The daytime running lights fail, which can be a significant safety concern.
- Unexplained Acceleration While Brakes Were Applied: This problem has been reported in the 2019 Mazda CX-5, with an average cost to fix of $2,600 and typically occurring around 14,000 miles. This can be a serious safety issue, as it can lead to loss of control of the vehicle.
- Windshield Easily Cracks/Divots: This issue has been reported in the 2015 Mazda CX-5, with an average cost to fix of $700 and typically occurring around 26,000 miles. The windshield can crack or divot easily, which can be a safety concern and also an annoyance for drivers.
- Faulty Ignition Coils: This was a common problem in the early models of the CX-5, particularly in the first generation (2012-2016). Many owners reported losing power while driving, which can be a significant safety concern.
- Control Short Circuit: This issue can cause the engine to cut out and reduce brake assistance. It has been reported in the 2012 to 2017 CX-5 models, with an average quote for electrical fault diagnostics of £61.49.
- Daytime Running Lamps Flickering: This issue has been reported in the CX-5 models, and can be caused by an electrical fault within the vehicle. It can result in the daytime LED running lights flickering or failing completely.
- Fuel Pump Impeller Failure: This issue can cause fuel pump failure, and has been reported in the 2012 to 2017 CX-5 models. The average quote for engine light diagnostics and repair for this issue stands at £57.53.
- Headlight Problems: This issue has been reported in the Mazda CX-5, where a defect in the LED or high-intensity discharge headlights can cause the lenses to appear milky white, reducing lighting ability.
- Handbrake Problems: This issue has been reported in the Mazda CX-5, where the handbrake can randomly engage itself without any manual influence. This can pose a risk to the driver and others on the road.
- Transmission Problems: Both the Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5 models have been noted for a string of transmission issues, including shifter vibration and other problems. These issues have been attributed to SKYACTIV Technology, which Mazda uses in these models.
These are just some of the common problems reported by Mazda CX-5 owners. It's important to note that not all vehicles of this model will experience these issues, and many will run smoothly without any problems. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.
What is the major problem of the Mazda CX-5?
We recommend staying away from the 2014 and 2016 Mazda CX-5. These recorded more complaints compared to the 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 model years. The most common complaints cover electrical problems, engine problems, interior accessories, and issues with the lights.
Is the Mazda CX-5 a reliable vehicle?
In our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, the CX-5 (in diesel form) ranked 10th out of 24 cars in the large SUV class with an overall score of 94.6%. Petrol models came 16th with a score of 92.9%.
What is the weakness of the Mazda CX-5?
Noise isolation is the weak point of the Mazda CX-5. In the first models, the noise from the engine did not make it possible to talk in the cabin. After re-styling, the sound insulation was slightly improved, but the crossover is still far from competitors in this indicator.
Does Mazda CX-5 have transmission problems?
Among the most reported problems with Mazda CX-5 is transmission-related issues. Some owners have experienced jerky shifts, hesitation during acceleration, or even complete transmission failure. This could be attributed to faulty transmission control modules or clutch problems.

Mazda Cx-5 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: JM3KFBCM2K1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have 115k miles on my 2019 CX5. Never has any issues. Now all of a sudden I have a cracked cylinder head leaking oil. I was smelling smoke but mot seeing it. I took into dealership they noticed oil dripping thus why smell. Its a $4500-5000 job. I cannot afford this. This should not happen at this kind of mileage. My warranty just expired too. Mazda needs to cover these type of repairs
Mazda Cx-5 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: JM3KE2CY8G0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Front windshield wipers stopped working, front windshield washer still working. Fuse was checked, fuse is good.Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety is put at risk because of lack of visibility when driving in rain. The problem has been confirmed by a Mazda dealership. The vehicle and the components have been inspected by a Mazda dealership. No warning lights or messages appeared before or after the front windshield wipers stopped working. So if a person is driving the car, there is no indication that the front windshield wipers will not work if it starts raining and the driver would need to use the front windshield wipers. This is a safety hazard because the driver will not be able to see, possibly causing an accident. This Mazda CX5 does not have automatic front windshield wipers (they do not come on automatically when it starts raining).

Mazda Cx-5 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
- VIN: JM3KFADM4K1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle starting stalling, check engine light would come on, and the vehicle would slipped into “limp mode” while traveling on the freeway. I was amount in two auto collisions because of the vehicle slowing down in the middle of the highway. The problem started in August 2023 and was towed to the dealer on one occasions and towed to my home on another occasion. The dealer ran a diagnostic and said it was the brand new battery I had installed and then the catalytic converter. After repairing both; the vehicle proceeded to not drive over 30 miles per hour. The dealer said it was the engine and then said it was something else. I’ve expressed that the symptoms are those more aligned to the PCM issue recalled on 2019. A actual diagnostic report from Auto Zone supports this. The vehicle has also been inspected by another Mazda dealer and a stand alone mechanic.
Mazda Cx-5 2017

Mazda Cx-5 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
- VIN: JM3KFBCL5H0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Twice now, my 2017 Mazda CX-5 stalled on the highway with a check engine light popping up--both times was driving around 60-70mph for a couple of hours and had about a quarter tank of gas left. The first time, no code was found, but the second time, after a deeper diagnostic, the dealership found a P0192 code. After reading here and many other places online, based on the code and the car's behavior, it really sounds like the Denso low-pressure fuel pump is to blame; that's the source of the recall for 2018 and 2019 Mazda CX-5s experiencing this same issue [XXX] ). If the 2017 model also uses that fuel pump, why isn't it included in the recall? If this dangerous and erratic car behavior is due to a faulty part, it really should be covered by the recall. Shame on you, Mazda. Lives are at risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Vehicle year: 2022
I drove the 22 Carbon Edition for 20K miles before trading it in for a 23 CX-5 Premium. There were several factors that influenced my decision. One of them was the color. Although the Carbon Edition with red interior looked nice, it was too flashy for my taste and no longer a unique color combination as Mazda continued to produce that color on the CE and other Mazda models. Mazda used to make special edition cars with unique color and trim combinations, but now they just keep producing them until buyers lose interest. Another factor was that I wanted Bose speakers and Paddle shifters, which were only available on the Premium model. The instrument cluster on the Premium is also nicer than the Carbon Edition with more analog gauges. Additionally, the 23 has a 50+ mile range on the gas tank, which is a nice feature. The grill size was also reduced, giving it a more subtle and streamlined look. Although my 22 had some transmission software issues from day 1, they got better over time. It initially had a habit of not shifting into 1st at a stop and then lunging back into 1st after accelerating, which didn't seem right. I called my Mazda dealer, and they said that's the way it is. The issue went away, and there was also a jumpy feel when the car was at low speeds, which I solved with premium gas. These were common issues on new cars, and they did get better over time. Then there was a knock noise in the suspension occasionally when going onto uneven driveways at an angle, just one pop and gone. I went in for the scheduled 15K nut & bolt chassis tightening, hoping it would settle the issue, but it didn't. Although I was not happy with the minor transmission software issues, the not-so-smooth drive at low speeds, and the suspension issue, I still enjoyed driving the car.I recently upgraded my car to a 23 CX5 - premium edition, which has many new features that I am excited about. I had a great experience trading in my year-old 22 CE for the new model. While I loved my old car, the new one feels like a luxury vehicle with improved software and suspension. My wife didn't notice any issues, but as someone who has owned many new Mazdas, I am more sensitive to minor details. I took the time to test the car thoroughly, driving in silence near walls and through tunnels with the windows down to listen for any noises. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and confident that the 22 CE will continue to run well for a long time.

I am thoroughly impressed with my new Mazda! It has all the latest technology and features, which is a first for me. I must admit, I was initially drawn to the car because of its sleek design, speed, and comfort. Some people even teased me about it, but I didn't let that bother me. As I was driving through a school zone to pick up my child, a truck suddenly swerved into my lane to avoid hitting a child who had run into the intersection. Despite my foot being on the gas pedal, my car quickly and safely came to a stop thanks to the SmartBrake Support feature. I was amazed and grateful that this technology prevented a potentially dangerous situation. Mazda has truly outdone themselves with this innovative feature!

I really love this car! While I haven't had the opportunity to compare it to many other cars, I can confidently say that it rides incredibly smoothly and quietly. In fact, sometimes I can't even tell that it's running when I first start it up! Due to some back and knee problems that come with age, I needed an SUV and this car is perfect for me. It's incredibly comfortable and I love every aspect of it. I even test drove a Honda CRV, but this car is so much smoother, classier, and more luxurious. Mazda has definitely won me over, even though I used to be a Honda loyalist. I thought I would buy a Honda, but this car has exceeded my expectations. I would definitely buy it again and recommend it to anyone. Plus, the carbon edition with red leather seats is just so cool!

Vehicle year: 2015
This is a fantastic vehicle overall! The CX5 performed exceptionally well during the past winter in the snow, including hilly driveways and unpaved roads. I can't just thank AWD, but along with the tires that came with it from the dealership, it drove great! These tires were all-seasons; however, typically, you still need actual snow tires to get as much traction as these did. Plus, with AWD, I never had any issues. I do a lot of 60 to 65mph highway driving and very slow city driving, mostly a 50/50 split, and I am getting an average of 25.2 mpg. Now, this isn't babying it nor beating on it. There are times when I will take off a little fast or be rushing to work, but if you baby it a little more than I do and do a good amount of both city and highway, I could see getting 26+ average mpg. I also went with the Grand Touring model as I wanted the leather interior, backup camera, and sunroof. The sunroof was a must-have for me, and the other things I wanted with the car ended up being, of course, in the most expensive model. Now, the backup camera, as well as lane departure warning, is great. My only issue is sometimes the sensor picks up guardrails, typically on ramps, and thinks it is a car and warns not to change lanes. However, other than this, it works great every so often. Now, the best part about this is how practical it is. It has comfortable and relatively decent space for passengers. The back seats will accommodate car seats well, and two should fit nicely. You may have to put your seat up slightly; however, I drive close to the steering wheel anyway. The trunk space is a plus as it is good for small to medium grocery runs. You will have to stack a bit, but it works. Now, if nobody is sitting in the back, then forget it. With a pull of a lever, the seats fold down with a breeze, and you will have the space of a small pickup bed.The heated seats work great and the climate control is easy to use. It would be nice if it blew a little more forcefully, but that's why you have the moonroof to put back and enjoy the nice warm days. I also looked at the CX3, but it was just a little too small for me. I pack this car with lots of stuff as I like to buy, sell, and collect a lot of stuff. Now for sportiness, I believe the CX5 looks sharp. I do like the newer styles front, but not so much the rear taillights on the 2017 and up. The 2015 is just an all-around smooth-looking car. Rims may come with cool-looking darkened specialty ones depending on the version. Mine did not, but they are real rims and aren't just fake ones with plastic covers like everyone used to have on their smaller cars. Acceleration in first gear starts off a little slow, but when it goes into 2nd, it beefs up and runs smoothly. For highway driving, one thing I was able to find in the manual is if you need to speed up quickly, push the pedal to the floor and then some. It will click and automatically downshift, giving you a faster speedup. Now for CONS: MPG could be a little better, but it depends on how you drive and where you drive. When I first bought the vehicle, I reset my average for I was curious how a 2-hour trip would go. With highway and main roads and very little back roads and stoplights, usually a 35+mph drive, my average in this trip there and back was 29mpg! Now with lots of city travel, it knocks it down. Still, 25 isn't too bad. One key though is don't use cheap gas! My MPG went from 22.1 to 25.2 just by using better gas! I used 87 just once because I was in a pinch and ended up filling it up. I reset the average, and it was 22.1 after my tank emptied. Now with better gas and 4 months of driving, I'm at 25.2. You spend more but go farther. 3.1mpgx13 gallons= 39.3 more miles over 1.5 gallons, which saved you more money than cheaping out. The headlights could be better. I'm going to replace them with HID Mazda lights. This is an easy fix, but I wish Mazda had included it in the 2016 and newer models as standard. One other thing I would like to change, which isn't really a problem if your car has it, is the dashboard maintenance reminder settings. Unfortunately, mine doesn't have this feature, but it would be great to have the option to see maintenance reminders for oil changes, etc. There were two types of dashboards available, model A and B, with only one of them having this feature. I wish all CX5s came with this option, especially since it's a larger SUV that people often take on long trips and vacations. It wouldn't have been too much to ask for Mazda to include it. Lastly, it's important to note that just because a car says it has a navigation system, it doesn't necessarily mean it's equipped with one. The navigation display unit is located where the CD changer and radio are, but some models don't have the chip reader with the maps that sends the information to the screen. I had to get it installed.

We purchased our 2015 CX 5 in August and traded in our 2014 CX 5 because I wanted a grand touring model. We absolutely love the car and it's a joy to drive. The mileage is spot on and the Pandora works great. Although we don't really use the navigation system, we can't say enough good things about it. We took a little trip to the E Bay store for some chrome items for the outside and now it's a real head turner. We even gave it a name - our Mazda-Rotti. It looks like a mini Lexus!

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up about the transmission version of your car. TSB 03-008/15 mentions that there might be an issue with the bearing configuration that could cause it to fail right after the 60k powertrain warranty, which could cost you $5200! I had a similar experience with my Mazda vehicle and it was definitely frustrating. Hope this helps you out!
George Rippin 2025-06-04
Vehicle year: 2024
The car has good horsepower and torque, a comfortable seat height, and is easy to park. The mileage is as expected, with 24 MPG combined for Premium gas and 25 MPG combined for Regular gas. It also has good passing power and fit and finish. However, the cocoa brown seat color can lead to a very hot car interior in the summer, and the regular gas can cause engine rattles despite Mazda's claims. The dashboard buttons are too small and low, making them hard to read, and the steering wheel is only heated at 9, 10, 2, and 3 o'clock. The remote only works within 30 feet of the car and sometimes doesn't work even when seated inside with the remote in your pocket. The transmission is clunkier compared to Hondas, and the GPS is not user-friendly. The key fob is massive and has tiny, hard-to-read buttons on the side. There is no option to turn on/off the heads-up display except for that particular drive, and the piano black center console is a dust collector. Additionally, you cannot lock the doors while the tailgate is up or closing, and the side door water bottle holder does not hold water bottles vertically, but instead at a weird angle, so make sure your water bottle cap is really tight!

This car has every bell and whistle imaginable and I was so excited driving it off the lot. However, I have been experiencing some computer issues lately. Unfortunately, these problems have been occurring more frequently, and it's becoming a daily issue. The issues are random and include the dash going dark, Sirius not being available, the car not unlocking, the car not locking, and messages flashing on the dash. I could go on and on. I took my brand new car to the dealership service department, but they told me there was nothing wrong. I gave them a memory card with numerous videos and pictures, but they still didn't seem to understand the issue. They have one more chance to fix this before I invoke the Lemon Law. Recently, they updated the software which resolved the Sirius issues, but now the car won't go over 30 mph in a snowstorm (in South Dakota!!!). I had to shut off all the fancy safety features because of numerous malfunctions. While driving down the interstate, in rush hour, suddenly the car wouldn't do more than 30 mph (I was in the left lane), and a malfunction warning was flashing on the dash. I believe that the computer system needs some improvement. I hope that the programming team can address these issues soon.

I've owned three Mazdas so far, and my latest purchase was the 2021 CX5 AWD in January. I've already driven 26,000 miles without any issues, including a cross-country trip from NY to CA and back. I averaged about 28mpg while driving with a load and keeping up with traffic, which is great. However, I have to admit that the vehicle is not very comfortable for me and my wife. Despite having all the adjustments, the seats just don't work for us. Perhaps cloth seats would have been a better choice. Additionally, the sunroof and windows are useless when going over 20mph as they make too much noise and beat you up. I also think the radio is subpar, and the controller in the middle to adjust anything on the dash screen is a bit of a nightmare. On the bright side, the price was right for the vehicle, and it has all the safety features you could ever ask for. The hood is a bit heavy, and the latch is a bit tricky to open, but it's not a deal-breaker. The cargo area is on the small side, but it has a temp spare and a nice cargo cover, which were included in the deal I made. The back seat room is a bit tight if the front passengers are taller than 5'10. Overall, the CX5 is not as exciting as I had hoped it would be, but it's still a good car. One last thing, it has an auto transmission, which is a big plus for me. There are a few gizmos that could have been better thought out, but I would still rate it 1 zoom, although not 2 zooms.

Owned a 2007 Mazda 6 for 15 years with no problems, a testament to Mazda's reliability. Recently purchased a 2023 CX5 and while it drives and handles like a Mazda should, the seats are uncomfortable on long drives. After an hour, my back and neck begin to ache, which my wife and son have also experienced. It's disappointing to have this issue with an otherwise great car. I hope Mazda can address this concern so we can continue to enjoy driving it.
