2016 Mazda Cx-5 problems
The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda since 2012. A successor to both the Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7, it is Mazda's first model to feature the "Kodo" design language and the first model to be fully developed with a range of technologies branded as Skyactiv, including a rigid, lightweight platform combined with a series of engines and transmissions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
Since 2019, the CX-5 is positioned above the smaller CX-30. As of 2022, depending on the region, the CX-5 is positioned right below the larger CX-50, CX-60 or the CX-8 within Mazda's crossover SUV line-up.
The CX-5 has been the worldwide best-selling model offered by the brand every year since 2014, with record sales in 2019 when 444,262 units were sold globally. As of March 2022, cumulative sales of the CX-5 has reached around 3.5 million vehicles.

Common 2016 Mazda Cx-5 problems
The 2016 Mazda CX-5 has faced several common problems, primarily related to lights, brakes, and windows/windshields.
Lights:
- Console buttons not working: Some owners have reported issues with the console buttons, specifically those used to switch between music and navigation. In some cases, only the turn knob worked, and the issue was attributed to spilled liquid. This problem was reported to have been resolved by replacing the affected part.
Brakes:
- Transmission failing to engage: This issue was reported by 32 owners. The problem occurs when there are broken components inside the transmission, preventing the car from moving from park to drive. The only solution is to replace the transmission, which can cost around $4,800.
- Premature brake wear: This issue was reported by 10 owners, with excessive brake wear occurring in the first 30,000 miles. The original pads and rotors tend to wear out quicker than in other SUVs, costing around $300 for pads and an additional $600 for rotors. Some aftermarket pads and rotors last longer, making them a better choice.
Windows/Windshields:
- Windshield breaks easily: This issue was reported by 29 owners, with the windshield breaking or cracking easily, especially in cold climates. This problem can cost around $500 to fix.
Other issues include infotainment system problems, such as the display screen freezing or changing from music to navigation on its own. These issues were reported to have been resolved by replacing the chip or rebooting the system.
In summary, the 2016 Mazda CX-5 has faced several common problems, primarily related to lights, brakes, and windows/windshields. These issues can lead to higher repair costs compared to other compact SUVs from 2016.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
- VIN: JM3KE2CY8G0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Front windshield wipers stopped working, front windshield washer still working. Fuse was checked, fuse is good.Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety is put at risk because of lack of visibility when driving in rain. The problem has been confirmed by a Mazda dealership. The vehicle and the components have been inspected by a Mazda dealership. No warning lights or messages appeared before or after the front windshield wipers stopped working. So if a person is driving the car, there is no indication that the front windshield wipers will not work if it starts raining and the driver would need to use the front windshield wipers. This is a safety hazard because the driver will not be able to see, possibly causing an accident. This Mazda CX5 does not have automatic front windshield wipers (they do not come on automatically when it starts raining).
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-17
- VIN: JM3KE4DY6G0
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated that upon approaching the vehicle he observed a small crack on the top left corner of the windshield. Over time the crack proceeded to progress across the windshield. The contact stated that the windshield was not impacted by an object or projectile. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,000.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- VIN: JM3KE2CY3G0
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The controls on the Windshield Wiper/Headlight Control Stalk are not visible when driving at night. The setting markings on the Control Stalk are completely dark at night. This creates a safety hazard when driving at night in the rain and turning on your windshield wipers or changing your headlight settings is needed.

SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-10-26
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM3KE2DY9G0
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: Vehicle was t-boned by another vehicle that was traveling 40mph. Both front seats are now loose, and have been for some time. Insurance refused to cover seat replacement during repairs in fear of going above the “totaled” threshold and it being a total loss. Now we are concerned about the safety of our vehicle, and we are scared to drive it on major highways where the risk of accidents are higher.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-17
- VIN: JM3KE2CY2G0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Catastrophic engine failure. Needs a total engine replacement, regular oil changes. We went to get the oil changed within 1,000 miles of the suggested mileage range and it was “out of oil”. The dealership told us we needed a new engine. It hasn’t been driven and sounds like a helicopter when turned on. We have had regular maintenance on the vehicle, one owner. It started acting up and was trying to stall out on the highway. Then seized up and wouldn’t go over 10mph. It’s totaled and we feel strongly that this is an extension of the current lawsuit covering many years of Mazda models.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
- VIN: JM3KE2CY6G0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: After having brakes serviced brake lights continue to come on. After research from many other complaints they are saying it’s the emergency parking that needs replaced? We shouldn’t have to replace this every time the brakes are replaced.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- VIN: JM3KE4DY0G0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My daughter was driving her 2016 CX5 when the coolant temperature warning message displayed on the instrument panel, advising her to pull over immediately. She had just driven on to the expressway, but luckily was still in the right lane and was able to pull over safely. If she had been in any other lane of the busy highway when this occurred it could have been a serious safety issue for my daughter and the other drivers on the highway. I contacted AAA to tow the car to my local mechanic. The service tech reported that they began by plugging their diagnostic tool into the car and they received two engine codes: P111A-00 and P011A, and that a software update must be performed first. I had the car towed to Turnersville Mazda. They said that there would be a $215 per hour diagnostic fee. They found that the thermostat needed to be replaced as it failed to open during engine operation. This service incurred a $397.55 cost. After replacing it they noticed that a milky substance was produced, indicating motor oil mixing with coolant. They recommended replacing the engine due to a crack in the cylinder head at a cost of $10,300. For some reason the service tech elected to replace the spark plugs and update the software AFTER the catastrophic engine issue was discovered, incurring an additional $330 in charges. Prior to this incident there were no issues with the vehicle, no warning lamps or symptoms of any kind.
SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-18

The vehicle is currently available for inspection as it has not been taken to be repaired, yet. Safety was put at risk by the seatbelt not being attached to the seat which could have resulted in serious bodily injury in the event of an accident. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center, yet. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by police, insurance, or manufacturer. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem appeared prior to failure.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with front passenger's headlight failure. The contact was informed that the passenger's side front headlight needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V063000 (Exterior Lighting) in 2020; however, only the front driver's side headlight was replaced at that time. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V063000 (Exterior Lighting) had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-22
- VIN: JM3KE4DY4G0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The used 2016 Mazda CX5 I just bought apparently has the "ghost touch screen" where the Infotainment system will randomly pick controls, place phone calls, change navigation. How can this not be a safety recall? I'm afraid to drive this car and not have full control of the navigation system or controls. This is DANGEROUS to have this happen when driving!! Mazda should be held accountable for this clear safety problem.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-11
- VIN: JM3KE4DY1G0
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My infotainment screen for my Mazda CX5 has bubbles on it. I contacted Mazda and they said this is an issue that many people have complained about, but there is no recall. The screen on the inside has a screen protector that is peeling off and eventually I will not be able to use my touchscreen. There should be a recall or an investigation into this issue. Please help or let me know where I can get more information. I should not have to pay $900 for a new screen kit.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-18
- VIN: JM3KE4DY4G0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Changed my oil and the next day the engine blew, maintained exactly how the manufacturer suggests, but somehow the engine blew.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-28
- VIN: JM3KE4DY5G0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: This vehicle has rear Electric Parking Brakes. Some time it's works sometimes it doesn't release the rear passenger side breaks. The rear passenger side brakes make to much noise and brakes pads destroy rotor earlier then others. Mazda dealers doesn't says to much on that and ask for above $1000 repair to change faulty EPB clipper. But my research says many people have same complaints with this model by mazda built-in around 2016. This is safety issue, if I replace brake pads every 4 or 5 months it cost me money. If I don't I cost me my safety.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-12
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM3KE4DY2G0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Mazda Mazda CX5. The contact stated that on two separate occasions, the vehicle unintentionally accelerated without warning in an attempt to park the vehicle. On the first occasion, the vehicle drove in between two trees with the contact's foot on the brake pedal before the vehicle came to a stop. The air bags did not deploy upon impact and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed to an independent body shop where the vehicle was repaired for minor damage. The contact was also informed that no computer codes indicated any signs of a mechanical failure. On the second occasion, the vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle while again attempting to park the vehicle in a parking lot. The force of the collision caused the already hit vehicle to crash into yet another parked vehicle. The air bags did not deploy upon impact and no injuries were reported. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed back to the same independent mechanic where the code reader indicated that the vehicle had a low battery; however, the battery did not need to be replaced. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle remained in the possession of the independent mechanic and had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-09
- VIN: JM3KE4DY8G0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: In September of 2023, while driving I attempted to use the windshield wipers, and they would not function. We live in a rainy part of the country, so having non working wipers is a major safety issue. Research for possible causes pointed to the body control module which had been recalled on Mazda 3s in recent years. I took the car to the dealership, and they traced the problem to an internal failure of the body control module. I do not have the component to inspect, and I do not know what the dealership did with it after removal. We filed a complaint with Mazda in October of 2023. They gave us case #001-463-33. They were not receptive to feedback, and simply stated many times that there was not a current recall for our vehicle. There were no warning signs/messages/ lights before the wipers stopped working, and they had worked normally the day before.

I would highly recommend going for the Grand Touring option. Although it may be more expensive, it comes with a range of safety features and additional bells and whistles that make it well worth the investment. The Mazda Grand Touring offers a fantastic ride and typical Mazda fun performance, with great storage and a perfect size for a small SUV or crossover. The size is easy to maneuver and the sitting position puts you in a good position to see the road. Personally, I love the safety features and the integrated control console is easy to use with great integrated technology. The ride is smooth and the steering is excellent. The 2.5-liter engine is solid and has nice power. Overall, I am extremely pleased with my purchase.

I chose the Grand Touring model mainly because my husband and I wanted dual AC. I'm so glad we did because we also love the leather! While this may not be the best stereo, I still think the sound is good and I wouldn't hesitate to spend the money on this trim again. A few days after we bought it, we encountered a lot of rain. Other vehicles were sliding and slipping around us, but I had no issues at all, even when driving through standing water. The seats are comfortable, and my husband, who is 6'5

I've had my CX5 for 2 months now and I thought it would be a good time to share my thoughts. So far, I'm really happy with it! My wife and I decided to get a Mazda because we loved her Mazda3 so much (which is now 3 or 4 years old). The CX5 has amazing styling and rides like a dream. I love pretty much everything about this vehicle! There are a few negatives worth mentioning though. Backing up can be difficult, even with the awesome camera. Seeing things that are not directly behind me is a bit of a challenge, so I now back into my parking spots. However, I do appreciate the cross traffic warning beep and the blind spot monitor, which make me feel much safer. The seat is comfortable, but I do sit at a bit of a goofy angle and the side supports can be a bit irritating. On the plus side, I am averaging better gas mileage than most people are reporting. I started in the mid 20s but am now up to just over 30MPG. My driving mix is about 75% highway and 25% city, so I'm quite pleased there. The Bose speakers are amazing, and I highly recommend spending the extra money to get them. I put some music on a flash drive and it's like being in my own little world! I also got weathertech mats and they are well worth the extra cost. If you don't use the trunk very often, you can use the other mats that came with the car as mats in the trunk. They may not be custom fit, but they get the job done! Update: It's been almost 8 months now and I still love my CX5! A friend of mine just bought a Hyundai Sonata and I can't help but wonder why?And another update, nearly three years later and I still love my CX5. It handled well in the snow on my drive into work, even without snow tires (front wheel drive only)! There's nothing I don't like about it!

I used to drive a 03 Toyota Matrix which I absolutely loved. Although it had no flares, it was extremely reliable. Since I have no kids, I was looking for a car that was young and fun, but also spacious enough for future kids. I needed a car with AWD and a moonroof in a CUV or hatch. I test drove the Crosstrek which was nice, but unfortunately too small. I also considered the Rogue, RAV4, and Forester. Although they were all great options, I felt like they aged me 10 years. The CX5, on the other hand, has a sporty style and drives like a car just higher up. The drive and engine are both quiet, and I love the LED lights and auto wipers. The safety features and technology are great for a car in this price range. The GT has a moonroof and Bose, and although I love the moonroof, the Bose seems weak. The navigation system has been upgraded from past years.
-
I am pleased with my new car, although I am disappointed that I cannot access XM radio as it is only available with the tech pack. However, I am happy to have navigation. Additionally, there is no instrumentation for temperature controls.

I've always owned either Toyota or Honda sedans, but this time I needed more room and decided to go for a compact SUV. After doing a lot of research and test driving, I finally settled on the CX5 FW (not the AW) with only 5 miles on it. However, after driving it for 1800 miles, I'm only getting 22.8 mpg and 24 mpg mix with highway, which seems a bit off. I drive on flat land in Florida and haven't been sitting in heavy traffic, so I'm not sure what's causing this. Additionally, the car has an idle vibration, and the dealer tells me that this is normal for sky active technology. I find this a bit disappointing for a $30k car made in 2016. I chose not to go with the Honda CR-V due to reports of a vibration issue, and now I'm regretting my purchase.
