2015 Mazda Cx-5 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda since 2012. A successor to both the Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7, it is Mazda's first model to feature the "Kodo" design language and the first model to be fully developed with a range of technologies branded as Skyactiv, including a rigid, lightweight platform combined with a series of engines and transmissions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

Since 2019, the CX-5 is positioned above the smaller CX-30. As of 2022, depending on the region, the CX-5 is positioned right below the larger CX-50, CX-60 or the CX-8 within Mazda's crossover SUV line-up.

The CX-5 has been the worldwide best-selling model offered by the brand every year since 2014, with record sales in 2019 when 444,262 units were sold globally. As of March 2022, cumulative sales of the CX-5 has reached around 3.5 million vehicles.

Common 2015 Mazda Cx-5 problems

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These problems span across various categories, including windows/windshield, transmission, interior accessories, brakes, engine, AC/heater, electrical, fuel system, lights, clutch, drivetrain, steering, body/paint, and miscellaneous issues.

One of the most common problems is related to the windshield. Many owners have reported that their windshields easily crack or develop divots, which can be costly to repair. The average cost to fix this issue is around $700, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 26,000 miles.

Another common problem is a whining noise, which can be an indication of transmission issues. This problem has been reported to cost around $5,000 to fix and typically occurs at an average mileage of 71,000 miles.

Some owners have also reported that their CX-5s do not shift properly, which can be another sign of transmission problems. The average cost to fix this issue is around $3,000, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 55,000 miles.

In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the vacuum pump, which is part of the braking system. This issue can result in reduced braking assistance and may require a new pump to be fitted.

Other common problems include a stalling engine, soot build-up in the intake shutter valve, and fuel injectors that were not tightened down correctly during manufacturing.

While the 2015 Mazda CX-5 has been reported to have several common problems, it is important to note that not all vehicles of this model year will experience these issues. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

What is the most common problem with Mazda CX-5?

Quick Answer: Avoid Mazda CX-5 Year Models 2014 and 2016

These recorded more complaints compared to the 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 model years. The most common complaints cover electrical problems, engine problems, interior accessories, and issues with the lights.

Is the 2015 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

It is so reliable—requires just basic maintenance like oil changes, new windshield wipers and tires as you'd need on any vehicle. Handles well, even on snow. Wish it had a turbo engine, but it's plenty fast and not an issue.

Do Mazda CX-5 have transmission problems?

Both Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5 models have been noted for a string of transmission issues.

Does the Mazda CX-5 have a good engine?

The CX-5's standard 187-hp four-cylinder engine has great throttle response when pulling away from stoplights or hustling around town, so it feels quicker than it actually is. It's at higher speeds, such as when trying to pass or merge onto the freeway, that it feels underpowered.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
  • VIN: JM3KE2DYXF0
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving on the freeway the check engine light came on. I was able to drive the car home the remaining 20 minutes but there was some noticeable difficulty accelerating. When I went to turn on the car later that day the engine would not turn over and there was an audible rattling/chugging sound and the car itself shook. I was unable to get the car to start and the check engine light remained on. I had AAA check the battery the next day and confirm it was not a battery issue and a diagnostic revealed the P0192 code. AAA towed it to their shop where it was confirmed by the manager mechanic that the issue was with the high pressure fuel pump and that it was causing an issue with the low pressure fuel sensor as well. The mechanic was unable to determine what caused the pump to fail and has quoted me nearly $2000 to fix it. After some searching online it has become clear that this is an issue many other Mazda owners have faced and that is even a recall for the pump for years and makes from Mazda due to a known issue with DENSO fuel pumps causing this exact issue. Despite this being known and DENSO having admitted issue with fuel pumps in cars dating back to 2013, Mazda has not recalled the vast majority of the cars that could be affected. From information I've gathered, it is entirely possible that my vehicle could have just stopped running in the middle of the freeway due to this issue which obviously would have put me in great danger of an accident. To summarize: Low pressure fuel sensor and high pressure fuel pump with error code P0192 are cited as the issues. It's possible this issue can cause the car to stop running with no warning, which would be extremely dangerous especially on the freeway. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by a AAA mechanic shop. The vehicle has been inspected by the AAA mechanic but no others. The check engine light came on but was not clear how extreme the circumstance was.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-17
  • VIN: JM3KE4DY3F0
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Occasionally have sudden unintended acceleration. Went to dealer, no codes shown. Replaced battery and did throttle service. Happens 1 or 2 times a month generally within first 5 minutes of trip when attempting to stop. While braking , rpm's go to 3k and brakes barely hold car stopped, so I throw it in neutral to stop...rpms eventually go down to normal. It's obviously a very dangerous situation. Im going to make another appt with dealer again but not optimistic because no codes show and they will keep the car until it happens but that could take forever. Went to other mechanics for fresh eyes and opinions. Some feel that it could be a software issue controlling the throttle body and said thats an engineering thing and that no technician will be able to figure that out. I had gone on Reddit / Mazda CX5 and found one other person with what looked like the exact same issue.

  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JM3KE4DYXF0
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was on my way home going down a windy back road going about 45 mph. there was a jeep in front of me and the mail truck was in front of them. the mail truck went to slow down and take a right onto a different road and as the jeep slowed down i applied my breaks and there was no response. this was not the first time this had happened in this vehicle but this time i panicked and i had to cut my wheel into the persons front yard to the right of us as i was continuously picking my foot up and slamming it down on the break and there was no response my car was just speeding up. i ended up going into the road that the mail truck was taking a right on and i hit the front of his truck and went flying into the woods and the trees were what stopped me. i now live with constant nerve pain everyday from this and suffer with a compressed lower back fracture that limits me daily from many things. before this incident i had issues with the breaks and acceleration twice. i had taken it to mazda and they fixed my “break switch” ? obviously that wasn’t the problem.

  • VIN: JM3KE2BE6F0
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: 2015 Mazda CX-5 with 91,000 miles on it. Automatic transmission has failed. When I attempted to pull out into traffic the vehicle would not shift into 2nd gear and instead jerked hard and the engine RPMs revved up. I was not able to get the vehicle past 10mph. This failure with the transmission resulted in the oncoming traffic having to swerve and break to avoid a collision with me. The vehicle was taken to a Mazda dealership who did a diagnostic on it and found that the Mazda had an "internal transmission failure" and would require a full replacement. I asked if it would be replaced with the same exact transmission and was told "no, the defect was discovered by Mazda and has been correct for new transmission models." The manufacture knows about this issue. Luckily I escaped serious bodily injury. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer as well as an independent 3rd party transmission repair specialist. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to this incident to give warning.

Negative 2015 Mazda Cx-5 car reviews

  1. Jessy Lubowitz 2024-11-05

I purchased my Mazda CX-5 on December of 2014. I was very excited due to all of the positive reviews that I read. However, I was disappointed when the transmission went out at 25,000 MILES. The dealer didn't have a loaner and it took them nearly a week to get my car fixed. I wish I had considered other options like Toyota or Subaru.

  2. Louisa Botsford 2024-09-08

I appreciate that you did some research before purchasing your car and were aware of the potential issues with the Infotainment system. However, it seems that the issues you are experiencing go beyond what you were expecting. It's frustrating that the iPod use has completely stopped, even with the 3-minute time to start a song and the starting over each time you turn on the car. Additionally, the Bluetooth has been difficult to use and you've had to reset it twice in just one month. As someone who drives a lot and relies on music, I can understand how disappointing this must be for you. It's important that Mazda addresses these issues and finds a solution. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

  3. Adolph Champlin 2024-09-06

In January 2015, I purchased a brand new MAZDA CX5 with 0 miles. Unfortunately, I found the co-pilot seat to be very uncomfortable due to the lack of leg room. As someone who is 5'10, I had to twist myself to enter the seat which was not ideal. Additionally, the fabric and carpet quality were not up to my standards. The acceleration was also lacking and the back seats were too small for me to sit comfortably. When I reached 40,000 miles, a strange sound started to come from the motor and I was informed that the motor manifold needed to be replaced, which was a costly repair. Despite these issues, I decided to trade in the MAZDA CX5 for a Toyota RAV 4 and have been extremely happy with my decision. Thank you for your understanding.

I've had my car for a while now and I still really like it! It's so eye-catching and the ride is quiet and handles great. The sound system is awesome too! Although, I have to admit, it can be a bit noisy at times. When it comes to the app for the car starter, it can be a bit frustrating. There's an annual charge for it and it can be a bit of a pain to use. I actually cancelled my $85 membership because of it. I purchased the pearl white Grand Touring with black leather interior and it looks amazing! I did have the remote start and tech option added, but I'm a bit disappointed with it. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. First, you have to download the app to your smartphone and create a username and password. Then, you have to log in and wait for the app to connect to your car. It can take up to a minute for each step, which can be frustrating. There's also a panic button, but I can't imagine having to log in when you're in a panic. Overall, I love my Mazda and I'm excited to see how it handles in the snow. I plan on being a Mazda owner for many years to come!

The navigation system, radio, and Bluetooth features of the car have been experiencing malfunctions. Despite the dealer's attempts to fix the issue, the problem persists. The dealer has offered to install an interface with Apple CarPlay for a fee. It is clear that the car's audio system was not designed to support iPhone audio/cell use on Bluetooth.

I recently purchased a Mazda CX5 Sport with AWD and the 2.5L engine, and I must say, I absolutely love driving it! I have driven it for about 6000 miles now, through all kinds of conditions, both on long trips and daily commutes. I am constantly impressed by how great this vehicle is. The Sport model with AWD and the 2.5L engine provides all the power I need. Whether I'm on the freeway or at a stop light, it accelerates smoothly and quickly. The CX5 handles like a dream, looks fantastic, and rides comfortably. I've even loaded it up with stuff on several occasions by popping down the back seat, and I was amazed at how much I could fit in there. Overall, I highly recommend the Mazda CX5 to anyone looking for a reliable and enjoyable driving experience.

In December 2014, I traded in my 2015 Accord sedan, which had multiple problems, for the 2015 CX-5. I absolutely love the style and drive of Mazda models. The seats in the CX-5 are supportive and comfortable, although the head restraint could be more comfortable for short people. The Bose system sounds good to me, not great, but it's good enough. The interior noise level is equivalent to other SUVs in this price range, and the car is relatively smooth on bumpy roads. The CX-5 is known for being a pleasure to drive, sporty for an SUV with great handling. The electronic multifunction interface could be improved, as it is a bit slow and sometimes requires multiple entries. Unfortunately, I am not able to download my messages, and the screen should be bigger. The fuel economy was lower than advertised, only 28.5 on the highway at 70 mph. In 2017, I decided to trade in my CX-5 for the 2017 model, which has loads of improvements. I still love the CX-5 and have had no problems with it while I owned it. Living in Florida, I found that the car took a long time to cool off due to the lack of air conditioning vents in the back. Also, I just got tired of the road roar, especially on the highway.

The infotainment system works well, but it has some quirks that can be annoying. You may want to consider upgrading it at a later date.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your CX5! It sounds like you did your research and made a great choice. The car's sleek exterior definitely catches the eye, and it's great to hear that it handles so well. Plus, the gas mileage is a nice bonus! It's also reassuring to hear that you have faith in Mazda's reliability. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

Just a heads up, I had some transmission issues with my Mazda CX5 at 80,000 miles. Unfortunately, I had to replace the entire transmission which cost me $4,600 out of pocket. While the skyactive transmission is advertised as maintenance-free, it still has some issues. I was disappointed that the Mazda dealer and corporation couldn't help with the repair cost since I was out of warranty mileage (but still within the years). This experience turned me off to Mazda as a whole and I'm not a fan of the engine and transmissions they put in their cars. I've also read about similar issues on forum threads online. I ended up selling my Mazda to Carmax to avoid further high-cost repairs. Just a friendly warning, and good luck if you decide to purchase a CX5!
