The Mazda Capella, also known as the 626 in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Mazda from 1970 until 2002. Sold in the Japanese domestic market under the Capella name, the vehicle was also commonly known in other major markets as the Mazda 626. Ford, Mazda's partner at the time, also used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe. 4,345,279 of the 626 and Telstar models were sold worldwide.

Designed to compete against Japanese mid-size stalwarts such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona, and Nissan Bluebird, the Capella was succeeded by the Mazda6 (Atenza) in 2002.

The car was named after Capella, the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, the sixth-brightest in the night sky and the third-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus and Vega.

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-08-10
  • VIN: 1YVGE22D1R5
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE 1994 MAZDA 626LX WITH A V-6 2.5L MOTOR HAS REQUIRED 3 TRANSMISSIONS IN THE 8 YEARS I HAVE OWNED THE CAR. THE WATER PUMP WENT OUT TWICE AND THE ALTERNATOR TWICE AS WELL. THIS LAST TIME THE TRANSMISSION FAILED, I WAS ON I-5 HEADING NORTH NEAR THE LOS BANOS TURNOFF WHEN IT JUST STARTED SLIPPING AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP ON THE FREEWAY. I AM VERY FRUSTRATED WITH THE DESIGN AND LONGEVITY OF MANY PARTS OF THIS VEHICLE. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-01-10
  • VIN: 1YVGE22C5R5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I PUCHASED A 1994 MAZDA 626 2.0L AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR THEY HAD TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED ONCE DUE TO FALURE. I DO NOT KNOW THE STORY OF HOW THE TRANSMISSION CAME TO FAIL ON THE PREVIOUS OWNER. NOW THAT I OWN IT THE CAR HAS STARTED TO SHIFT VERY HARD, AND RANDOMLY SHIFT DOWN FOR A SPLIT SECCOND AT CRUISING SPEEDS(NO CHANGE IN ACCELARATOR TRAVEL OR GRADE CHANGE). THE TRANSMISSION ALSO CAUSES A FLUCTUATION IN RPM'S IN CRUISING CONDITIONS FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS. *CN

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-02
  • VIN: 1YVGE22C7R5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I PURCHASE A 1994 MAZDA 626LX AUTOMATIC SEDAN APPROXIMATELY 3 MONTHS AGO, FROM AN INDIVIDUAL HERE IN AUSTIN, TX. APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH AFTER OBTAINING, AND PUTTING NEW TIRES, NEW BRAKES AND A COMPLETE TUNE-UP, THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. AFTER DOING SOME FURTHER INVESTIGATION ON THE CAR, I FOUND OUT THAT THE TRANSMISSION(CDF4E) FOR THAT YEAR MODEL HAS GOTTEN A LOT OF COMPLAINTS. APPARENTLY, THE TRANSMISSION IS TO SMALL FOR THE 2.0 LITER ENGINE, AND BURNS UP AFTER SO MANY MILES OR LENGTH OF DRIVING. I CHECKED IT OUT ONLINE, AND THE SITE THAT I CHECKED GAVE A FAIRLY DECENT APPROVAL RATING OF THE VEHICLE. ANYHOW, THE VEHICLE, AS OF NOW, IS DISABLED AND RIGHT NOW, I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX IT. THE TRANSMISSION QUIT WORKING WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN I-35 AT 65MPH, IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE. LUCKILY, I WAS GOING FAST ENOUGH TO COAST TO THE END OF THE CONSTRUCTION AREA, TO PARK ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, SAFELY. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-01-10
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I BOUGHT A 1994 USED MAZDA 626 LX A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AGO FOR $1600.00. AND I PUT ANOTHER $500.00 IN IT GETTING 2 NEW FRONT TIRES A COMPLETE TUNE UP, AND A COMPLETE BRAKE JOB. I TEST DROVE IT AND IT RAN FINE. I FOUND OUT LATER AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR IN A FEW DAYS WHILE GOING UP A STEEP HILL HERE IN AUSTIN, AND PUT IT IN D2 A LOWER GEAR, AND THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING. SO, AT THE TOP OF THE HILL, I PUT IT BACK IN DRIVE, AND IT WORKED OK. BUT SOMETIMES IS WOULD TAKE OFF VERY SLUGGISHLY AFTER WARMING UP. THE HOLD LIGHT STARTED FLASHING ALSO. I FIXED THE HOLD LIGHT PROBLEM, BUT 2 WEEKS LATER, GOING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE TRANSMISSION WENT COMPLETELY OUR, RIGHT AT A CONSTRUCTION ZONE, WITH THE CONCRETE BARRIER WALLS ON BOTH SIDES. SO FORTUNATELY, I MANAGED TO COAST ABOUT ANOTHER MILE TO THE END OF THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE AND OFF THE HIGHWAY, ONTO THE SHOULDER SAFELY. I HAVE JUST RECENTLY FOUND OUT HERE ONLINE ON THESE AUTO FORUMS, THAT THE 1994 MAZDA 626 LX AUTOMATIC IS A LEMON. LOT'S OF PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE CD4E FORD TRANSMISSION ON THE CAR. I HONESTLY CAN'T BELIEVE THERE HASN'T BEEN A RE-CALL ON THEM. I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR A LITTLE OVER A MONTH, AND IM OUT OF AROUND $2100.00 DOLLARS ON IT. I HAVING A HARD TIME FINDING ANYONE AROUND HERE THAT WILL WORK ON IT, AT A FAIR PRICE. I COULD REPAIR IT MYSELF, WITH SOME HELP, BUT FROM WHAT I'VE READ, THE WHOLE CAR WAS A DESIGN FLAW, IN THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS ACTUALLY TO SMALL FOR THE 626 BODY, AND CAUSES THE TRANSAXLE TO OVERHEAT AFTER A WHILE. AND I DIDN'T KNOW YOU HAD TO BUY A EXTRA COOLING KIT FOR THE TRANSAXLE TO KEEP IT FROM OVERHEATING. I LIKED THE CAR WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT, BUT,MAN, I DIDN'T EXPECT ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS. THAT IS ABOUT ALL I HAVE. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-12-18
  • VIN: 1YVGE22C6R5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: REPETITIVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURES ON MY 1994 MAZDA 626 ALREADY COST ME MANY THOUSANDS DOLLARS. HISTORY: DECEMBER 1992 - INITIAL TRANSMISSION ERROR CODES. AUTHORIZED MAZDA REPAIR SERVICE CHANGED TRANSMISSION FILTER AND FLUID. CODES WERE COMING BACK. INSTALLED EXTRA COOLER. MAY 1993 - TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE; TRANNY REBUILT AT ST. JAMES TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP; WARRANTY 1 YEAR OR 12K MILES; MARCH 1995 - TRANSMISSION ERROR CODES BACK AND UNEXPLAINABLE FAILURES. TOOK IT TO LEE MYLES IN YONKERS - GAVE ME 2 YEARS WARRANTY. ON THE WAY HOME SIGNAL WAS BACK. SINCE THEN THE CAR WAS BACK IN THE STORE FOR MORE THAN 6 MONTHS. DURING THAT TIME LEE MYLES MANY TIMES OPEN AND REPAIRED TRANSMISSION TO FIX TR, INSTALLED ANOTHER EXTRA COOLER, REPLACED MY ORIGINAL RADIATOR, REPLACED MAIN ELECTRICAL WIRING SYSTEM AND MANY OTHER PARTS. I HAD ALSO MY ENGINE INSPECTED AND TUNED SEVERAL TIMES IN ANOTHER SHOPS, INCLUDING REPLACING OF FUEL PUMP, SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES, DISTRIBUTOR AND OTHER. HOWEVER TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING AGAIN AND AGAIN. CAR HAD TO BE TOWED AWAY BY LEE MYLES 3 TIMES AND I DROVE IT SEVERAL TIMES AT SLOW SPEED ON SIDE ROADS BACK TO THE LEE MYLES. FINALLY LEE MYLES BOUGHT ME A FACTORY REBUILD TRANSMISSION AND FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS EVERYTHING LOOKED NICE AGAIN. THEN AFTER 20 MILES OF DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED RPM STARTED TO GO UP AND THE ERROR CODE CAME BACK AGAIN. SINCE THEN I AM USING MY CAR ONLY VERY LOCALLY AND AFTER ABOUT $10,000 (YES 10K) SPENT ON TRANSMISSION REPAIRS AND CAR UPGRADES, MY MAZDA 626 IS JUNK I CANNOT EVEN SELL. *JB

Negative 1994 Mazda 626 car reviews

  1. Jamal Paucek 2024-10-22

Hi there! I recently purchased this car to replace my old Integra. Although it's a Ford, I was excited about the Mazda 4 cylinder engine. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. The automatic transmission had to be replaced before I bought it at 130K miles, and since then I've had to replace it twice with brand new units, which cost me over $3K for the second one alone. On top of that, the engine burns oil, the A/C doesn't work, and the headlights have yellowed. I've also had some electrical problems. It's been sitting in my driveway for the last 5 months because it won't stay running, so I've decided to sell it. I know I won't get my money back, but I'm hoping someone else can fix it up and give it a good home. Anyway, I'm now driving an Accord daily and it's been great so far!

  2. Kendall Stroman 2024-07-18

I purchased my 626 two years ago with high hopes for a quality vehicle. Unfortunately, I have had to replace several parts including front axles, tie-rods, crank seals, cam seals, oil pressure pump, brakes (twice), rear sway bar, all the drive belts, the entire exhaust system, and a new ignition module. Despite all the repairs, I still enjoy driving it for its speed, but the ride could be smoother. Overall, my experience has been disappointing.

  3. Torrance Larson 2024-03-25

This car has had some issues, including warped brakes, new ignition wires, new O2 sensors, new CV joints, new lower control arm, new paint, new oil pressure sensor, and a new thermostat. However, despite these challenges, the car still starts and gets me where I need to go reliably.

  4. Kayleigh Ferry 2024-02-22

I needed a 'beater' for a year, and it filled that role well. Despite having over 160K miles, the car never let me down and there were no major issues. However, it did have a lot of small noises, rattles, squeaks, and other annoyances. Unfortunately, due to its poor condition, I decided to get rid of it as soon as I stopped working from home. I couldn't bear the thought of others having to ride in it!

Positive 1994 Mazda 626 car reviews

  1. Aidan Moore 2024-07-22

I'm so glad you're interested in my car! I bought it used back in '97 and I've been in love with it ever since. It's been really reliable, with only a few minor maintenance issues like the dist and starter. Even with over 133K miles on it, it still runs like a dream and gets an average of 30 mpg. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Llewellyn Batz 2024-06-23

You can always count on this car! Despite being totaled at 120,000 miles due to a collision at 45mph on the driver's side, I walked away without any injuries. Throughout my 5 years of ownership, I only needed to make minor repairs to the cv joints, axel, and a few other areas.

  3. Trevion Smith 2024-05-11

I'm so glad to hear that you've had this car for almost 2 years now and have had no major maintenance issues except for brakes and exhaust. It sounds like it's really fun to drive and has great reliability, never letting you down even in extreme cold weather. Although the auto transmission leaves some of the power untouched, it's great to hear that there's lots of space and the car is extremely comfortable. Thank you for sharing your experience with this car!

  4. Lionel Kshlerin 2024-04-09

Overall, this is a great car. People who drive it often comment on how smooth and quick the V6 is, even compared to newer cars. Although it has had to have two water pumps replaced and is starting to make some 'old car' noises, it keeps on going. It can also easily tow a 1000lb trailer, and the 'hold' function on the automatic transmission is useful for towing. While the transmission is starting to shift a bit harshly, it still seems robust. We've had other cars that shifted the same way and never failed.
