The Mazda Capella, also known as the 626 in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Mazda from 1970 until 2002. Sold in the Japanese domestic market under the Capella name, the vehicle was also commonly known in other major markets as the Mazda 626. Ford, Mazda's partner at the time, also used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe. 4,345,279 of the 626 and Telstar models were sold worldwide.

Designed to compete against Japanese mid-size stalwarts such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona, and Nissan Bluebird, the Capella was succeeded by the Mazda6 (Atenza) in 2002.

The car was named after Capella, the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, the sixth-brightest in the night sky and the third-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus and Vega.

Common 2000 Mazda 626 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Mazda 626 2000, several common problems have been identified. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Slow Window Rising:
    • Problem: One or more door windows may go down easily but take around 10 minutes to go back up, or they may stop moving entirely.
    • Solution: This issue is typically caused by a failing window motor or regulator. Replacing these components can resolve the problem.
  2. Engine Won't Restart:
    • Problem: The engine may stop while driving and then fail to restart.
    • Solution: Early models of the Mazda 626 had weak inner parts in the fuel injection pump's spill valve, leading to a drop in injection pressure. Replacing the spill valve can rectify this issue.
  3. Engine Cranks But Not Starting:
    • Problem: The engine cranks but does not start.
    • Solution: This could be due to a worn distributor or a tripped inertia switch. Replacing the distributor or resetting the inertia switch can often resolve this problem.
  4. Knocking From Front or Rear:
    • Problem: A knocking sound is heard from the front or rear of the car, especially on rough roads.
    • Solution: This issue is commonly caused by broken or loose sway bar linkages. Tightening or replacing these linkages can eliminate the knocking noise.
  5. Engine Surge:
    • Problem: The engine surges unexpectedly while driving.
    • Solution: Check the intake tube for splits between the mass airflow sensor and throttle bottle. Replacing damaged intake ducting can address this problem.
  6. Rough Idling:
    • Problem: The engine runs rough when idling and may misfire.
    • Solution: Worn-out intake manifold gaskets are a common cause of rough idling in the Mazda 626. Replacing the gasket can improve engine performance.
  7. Engine Stall When Stopping:
    • Problem: The engine stalls when applying the brake to stop.
    • Solution: Low automatic transmission fluid levels can cause the torque converter to lock up, leading to stalling. Topping up the ATF can resolve this issue.
  8. Heater Problems:
    • Problem: Heater may only work on specific settings due to issues with the blower motor.
    • Solution: Replacing the heater blower motor can fix this problem and ensure proper functioning of the heater.
  9. Engine Misfiring:
    • Problem: Engine misfires, revs fluctuate, and poor acceleration occurs.
    • Solution: Failure of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor can lead to misfiring and poor engine performance. Replacing the MAF sensor can address these issues effectively.

These common problems with the Mazda 626 2000 highlight various issues that owners may encounter and the corresponding solutions to address them effectively.

  • Summary: D&M AUTOBROKERS SOLD ME A "DEATH TRAP" VEHICLE THAT COULD NOT PASS DEQ EMISSIONS TESTING. MULTIPLE THINGS KEPT GOING WRONG, AND THE DEALERSHIP HAD MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO FIX THE ISSUES. EVENTUALLY, ALL THE ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE AND THE NUMEROUS LIES I WAS BEING FED WERE TOO OVERWHELMING, I GAVE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND MADE A DEAL WITH GOLD ACCEPTANCE FINANCE COMPANY AS WELL AS THE DEALERSHIP D&M AUTOBROKERS FOR D&M AUTOBROKERS TO PURCHASE THE LOAN BACK FROM GOLD ACCEPTANCE AND PAY IT OFF IN FULL. THIS AGREEMENT WAS WRITTEN AND SIGNED AS WELL AS A VERBAL AGREEMENT AND UNDERSTANDING. THE DEALERSHIP MADE ONE PAYMENT THAT INITIALLY PAID OFF HALF OF THE BALANCE OF THE LOAN, AND THEN DECIDED TO NOT PAY THE LOAN OFF IN FULL AT ALL, OR SEND A SINGLE PAYMENT. MY CREDIT IS NOW IN THE DANGER ZONE, THEY STILL HAVE AT LEAST $3000 OWED ON THE LOAN, AND THEY ARE NOW CLAIMING THEIR OUT OF BUSINESS. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO ALL THE CREDIT BUREAU'S AS WELL AS THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE. GOLD ACCEPTANCE HAS BEEN SO WONDERFUL IN LEADING ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AS WELL AS PROVIDING HELP TO GET THIS TAKEN CARE OF. I DO NEED THIS COMPLAINT TO GO THROUGH. THIS DEALERSHIP HAS PAR-TAKEN A ROLE IN MY UNEMPLOYMENT, AS WELL AS ENDANGERING MY DAUGHTERS AND MY LIFE, AS WELL AS HORRIFY MY CREDIT. I AM REQUESTING D&M AUTOBROKERS LLC, BE REQUESTED AND MADE TO PAY THIS LOAN OFF, AS WELL AS ALL NEGATIVE MARKS BE REMOVED FROM MY CREDIT. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-03-22
  • VIN: 1YVGF22CXY5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I HAVE A CONCERN WITH THE TRANSMISSION'S ON THE MAZDA 626 TRANSMISSION STYLE CD4E. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE (INTERNET SEARCHED) WHO HAVE THESE VEHICLES AND HAVE BEEN PLACED IN DIRE STRAITS AS I AM. I WAS TRAVELING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH AND FROM OUT OF NOWHERE, MY OD STOPPED FUNCTIONING AND LEFT THE CAR'S TRANNY SLIPPING OUT OF 4TH GEAR SEARCHING FOR A LOWER GEAR AS IT THREW THE FLASHING "OD LIGHT OFF" INDICATOR LIGHT. I HAD A WOMAN SWERVE BEHIND ME AS I HAD TOTAL LOSS OF POWER AND TRYING TO GET MY CAR TO GRASP ANY GEAR. ONCE I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOPPED, THE OD LIGHT STOPPED FLASHING AND MY VEHICLE WAS LEFT IN A "LIMP HOME" MODE WHERE I COULD NOT GET OVER 45MPH. I HAD THE TRANNY REBUILT TO THE TUNE OF 1500.00 AND GUESS WHAT? I GOT INTO THE CAR TO DO HIGHWAY TRAVEL ONE WEEK LATER, AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I HAVE READ THAT I AM BY FAR THE ONLY PERSON THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. THIS IS A 2000 MODEL. MY BROTHER BOUGHT IT IN 2002. HE HAS MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE FOR THE LAST 7.5 YEARS AND I HAVE HAD IT FOR 6 MONTHS NOW. THE MILES ARE 76K, ONLY! SOMEONE NEEDS TO HAVE MAZDA FIX THIS ISSUE. THIS IS REDICULOUS AND THIE IS BY FAR A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. THE SURGING AND SEARCHING THE 4TH GEAR DOES IS VERY HARD, JERKY AND SURGING. ANYONE RIGHT ON YOUR BUTT IN TRAFFIC IS GOING TO SLAM INTO ONE OF THESE VEHICLES. THERE IS ALSO A TSB FOR THIS AS WELL......BUT MAZDA HAS OFFERED NO AMENDS TO THIS SITUAUTION WHEN I CALLED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE. THEY SAID THEY WERE UNAWARE OF THIS SITUATION. THAT IS SIMPLY NOT POSSIBLE.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-01-07
  • VIN: 1YVGF22C2Y5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: WE HAVE MAZDA 626 4CYL, 2000 YR., AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION IN OUR MAZDA ALWAYS HESITATES TO SHIFT UP AND REVS UP TO VERY HIGH RPMS EVENTHOUGH THE ACCELERATION IS GRADUAL. THERE IS ALSO QUITE A BIT OF NOISE IN THE CAR COMING FROM ENGINE WHEN I AM MERGING ON A FREEWAY. THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO BE STUCK IN A LOWER GEAR. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER IN 2002. HOWEVER, THE SAME PROBLEM REMAINS TO THIS DAY. SOMETIMES, WHEN THE CAR IS COLD, JUST WHEN YOU START IT IN THE MORNING, FOR EXAMPLE, THE CAR ACCELERATES SUDDENLY AND I ALMOST HIT MY OTHER CAR IN A GARAGE. *TR

MY OVERDRIVE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON AND BLINKING AND THE CODE WAS ALWAYS THE TEMPERATURE HIGH DUE TO HIGHWAY DRIVING. IF THIS TRANSMISSION WASN'T MEANT FOR HIGHWAY DRIVING IT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN UTILIZED. LUCKILY I DIDN'T GET INTO AN ACCIDENT WITH THE CARE. *TR

POWER TRAIN,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-01-14
  • VIN: 1YVGF22C3Y5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2000 MAZDA 626 WITH THE CD4E FORD TRANSMISSION AND I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS NOW. I HAVE DONE NUMEROUS RESEARCH AND TOOK IT TO MANY SHOPS AND HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THIS TRANSMISSION IS TRASH. THIS TRANSMISSION WAR POORLY BUILT AND THEY NEED TO RECALL THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. MAZDA AND FORD SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BAD ENGINEERING THAT HAS COST THOUSANDS OF DRIVERS PROBLEMS AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRS. SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND A RECALL NEEDS TO BE DONE. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-10-24
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I BOUGHT A 2000 MAZDA 626 LX FROM A NEIGHBOR, AND WITH ONLY 95K ON THE ODOMETER, THE CAR BEGAN SHIFTING ROUGH. IT DIDN'T SEEM TO CAUSE MUCH OF A PROBLEM AND I CONTINUED TO PROVIDE GENERAL MAINTENANCE FOR THE CAR. HOWEVER, I ALMOST NEVER TRAVELED OUTSIDE OF A 20 MILE RADIUS WITH THE VEHICLE. ONCE I DID TRAVEL ABOUT 40 MILES AWAY, THE TRANSMISSION BROKE DOWN AND REFUSED TO ENTER INTO DRIVE, BUT ONLY THE LOWER GEARS. AS I SEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS, IT BECAME READILY APPARENT THAT A TRANSMISSION FAILURE WAS COMMON FOR THE MAZDA 626 MODEL. I AM NOW FACED WITH REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $2,000 PLUS. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-06-10
  • VIN: 1YVGF22C3Y5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: TRANSMISSION FAILURE, MAZDA 626, YEAR 2000. THIS IS THE SECOND FAILURE. FOLLOWING COMPUTER CODES LED TO $800 IN UNNECESSARY REPAIRS. CAR DRIVES WELL UNTIL O/D BEGINS TO FLASH, RPM FLUXES BETWEEN 1000 AND 5000 AND TRANNY SLIPS. ON PARKING AND SHUTTING OFF MOTOR THEN RESTARTING AND SHIFTING INTO DRIVE TRANNY SLAMS INTO GEAR WITH A BANG. NEVER KNOW WHEN RPM IS GOING TO GO CRAZY AND THE TRANSMISSION TO SLIP. THIS CAUSES A MAD SCRAMBLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHICH IS SOMETIMES HARD AS YOU MAY BE IN THE PASSING LANE. COST ESTIMATES RANGE FROM $1800 + 400 600 FOR INSTALL FOR A REBUILT TRANSMISSION FROM A DEALER OF TRANSMISSIONS SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS CAR. THIS MODEL/TRANSMISSION COMBINATION IS USED ON ABOUT THE 10 PRECEDING YEARS. TAKEN TOGETHER THEY PRESENT A GOOD CASE FOR A DEALER RECALL I WOULD THINK. EVEN THOUGH MAZDA ISSUED A TSB IT IS ONLY MEANT TO DELAY THE PROBLEM UNTIL ULTIMATE TRANSMISSION FAILURE. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2000-08-06
  • VIN: 1YVGF22C3Y5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: SHIFTING BRACKET CONTINUALLY FALLS OFF. THE TRANSMISSION DOESN'T SHIFT INTO PROPER GEAR ( DRIVE REVERSE ETC) UNTIL TRYING A COUPLE OF TIMES. THE ENGINE REVES ITSELF FROM 2000 TO 4000 WITHOUT PRESSING DOWN MORE ON GAS PEDAL. THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT FROM 2ND TO FIRST UNTIL YOU REACH 50MPH OR RELEASE GAS REPEATEDLY WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS VERY HAZARDOUS ON ANY ROAD. SOMETIMES THE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTS WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY OVER 55MPH. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I HAVE HAD CARS ALMOST HIT ME IN THE REAR. THIS HAPPENS ON A DAILY BASIS. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT AND THE COST IS OVER $2000. BOOK VALUE IS NOT MUCH MORE THE CAR HAS 117585 MILES. *TR

ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC THE REST OF THE CAR IS IN GREAT CONDITION BESIDES THE FACT THAT WE NEED A TRANSMISSION OVERHALL WHICH WILL RUN US 4,000 - 5,000. A BRIEF INTERNET SEARCH BY THE MECHANIC AND SUBSEQUENTLY BY MYSELF INDICATED THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT OF MAZDA. ALSO, THE PRESSURE COULD REACH A POINT THAT THE BRAKE CALIPER AND DRUM CYLINDER ARE PULLED BACK BY THE VACUUM IN THE RESERVOIR TANK WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED FOR A LONG TIME.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE REDUCED BRAKE EFFICIENCY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE RESERVOIR CAP AND REPLACE IT, IF NECESSARY.

Negative 2000 Mazda 626 car reviews

  1. Zackery Nitzsche 2024-09-21

Good vehicle in most areas except for a very poor experience with the automatic transmission. Unfortunately, major transmission repairs were required at 70,000 and again at 97,000 miles. It's worth noting that the automatic transmission is Ford designed and does not provide the same quality as Mazda.

  2. Jarrod Kunde 2024-09-17

I think you've made a great choice with this car! As long as you keep up with oil changes and tune-ups, it's a reliable car that will serve you well. While it may not be the fanciest car out there, it's definitely comfortable and spacious enough for your passengers. While the gas mileage may not be as good as you hoped, it's still better than some other cars out there. Overall, it's a great choice for a family sedan.

  3. Damien O'Conner 2024-09-06

I'm on my 2nd 626 and 3rd Mazda, and I must say, I'm impressed with their longevity. My previous turbo 4 cylinders were great, but my current 6's V6 is a lot of fun to drive and makes great high revving sounds. Although it's a bit low on torque, I still enjoy driving it. I have noticed a few quality issues, which makes me wonder if it will hold together like my circa 80's cars did. The coolant expansion tank had a leak, but it was easily replaced. The driver's door power lock motor also made a loud noise while operating, but both parts were acquired from the dealer for around $50. I don't think these quirks are due to US assembly, as my previous cars were both US & Japanese made and were excellent. Overall, I'm still a big fan of Mazda and their cars.

I really like my Mazda! The interior is beautiful with its leather seats, sunroof, radio, and power everything. However, I have had some mechanical issues with the car. Unfortunately, it started breaking down and needed a lot of repairs. It would have been great if it had come with a new 4-year warranty. In the end, everything was replaced except for the body. It can be quite expensive to maintain.

I bought this used car on February 3rd and unfortunately it broke down on the 5th. The car had no acceleration while I was driving and when I pulled over to try and restart it, it wouldn't start. I brought it to a mechanic to repair the problem and they found out that the fuel pump was broken. Although it was repaired, the same problem appeared after driving it for another 3 days. I think this car may not be reliable unless you want to use it as a backup. Even if it is fixed, I am still worried about driving it around. It feels like a waste of money to buy a car that cannot be driven.

Hello! When we received the letter that our 1997 626's lease was going to expire, I test drove the Honda, Toyota, VW, and the new 626. To be honest, I couldn't tell much of a difference, so the price became an important factor for us. We have always loved having a moonroof and ABS brakes, and for our new car, we wanted leather seats, which took us about a week to find. Occasionally, the transmission shifts hard, but the car has only had one minor recall and has only been to the shop for periodic services. I must say, the Mazda company has been outstanding to deal with!

We have made our final payment on the zoom/zoom and we only have 59K hassle-free miles. Thanks to Edmunds, we researched and paid for a reliable car. Ours has 130 horsepower and a left-leg flexor, and we feel this combination is the most fun and cost-conscious way to get around.

Congratulations on your new car! I see that it's a 2000 ESV6 with low mileage. While the 626 has plenty of power, I understand that the automatic transmission can sometimes act up. However, despite any quirks, it's clear that you really love this car. It's a big step up from what you're used to, and I can imagine that it must be a joy to drive. I also understand that it may struggle a bit on steep hills, but overall it sounds like a great car!

I completely understand where you're coming from. It's tough when you make a big purchase like a car and then have to deal with unexpected issues. It sounds like you've had a really frustrating experience, but I'm glad to hear that your car is finally fixed and running smoothly now!

I went from a sporty two-door coupe to my 626 to make room for my new baby. I have no complaints. I financed my car through Mazda American Credit and I have been really impressed with the service I have received and the performance of my car.
