The Mazda Capella, also known as the 626 in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Mazda from 1970 until 2002. Sold in the Japanese domestic market under the Capella name, the vehicle was also commonly known in other major markets as the Mazda 626. Ford, Mazda's partner at the time, also used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe. 4,345,279 of the 626 and Telstar models were sold worldwide.

Designed to compete against Japanese mid-size stalwarts such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona, and Nissan Bluebird, the Capella was succeeded by the Mazda6 (Atenza) in 2002.

The car was named after Capella, the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, the sixth-brightest in the night sky and the third-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus and Vega.

Common 1999 Mazda 626 problems

The Mazda 626 is a popular car model that has been praised for its reliability and durability. However, like any other car, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years.

One of the most common problems with the Mazda 626 is related to the cam and crank sensors. These sensors can play up when they heat up from engine heat, causing the engine to stall or run poorly. This issue can be particularly frustrating for drivers, as it may not be immediately apparent what is causing the problem.

Another issue that has been reported by owners of the Mazda 626 is related to the automatic transmission. Some drivers have reported that the transmission can be prone to leaks and other issues, which can be expensive to repair. It is recommended that drivers check the transmission regularly and address any issues promptly to avoid further damage

The engine of the Mazda 626 has also been known to have issues with sluggishness and oil leaks. Some drivers have reported that the engine can be slow to respond, particularly when the car is heavily loaded or the boot is full

. Additionally, oil leaks have been reported by some owners, which can be messy and potentially damaging to the engine if not addressed promptly.

The interior of the Mazda 626 has also been a source of frustration for some drivers. Some owners have reported that the front seats can be uncomfortable, particularly on longer trips. Additionally, some drivers have reported that the air conditioning and central locking systems can be prone to issues, which can be inconvenient and uncomfortable

Despite these issues, many owners of the Mazda 626 have reported that the car is generally reliable and well-built. With regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues, the Mazda 626 can be a reliable and durable car that provides many years of service.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-07-01
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: PURCHASED A 1999 MAZDA 626 IN FEBRUARY OF 2003 WITH 28,000 MILES. CAR HAS BEEN GREAT UNTIL RECENTLY IN 2009 THE TRANSMISSION HAS STARTED TO DEVELOP PROBLEMS. IT NOW SLIPS IN SECOND GEAR, I CANNOT DRIVE ON THE INTERSTATE FOR FEAR THAT THE INFAMOUS O/D OFF LIGHT WILL START TO FLASH AND LEAVE ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. THIS OCCURS SOMETIMES AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF MAYBE 30 MINUTES OR MORE DRIVING 70 MPH, AND SOMETIMES AT 65MPH. WHEN IT DOES HAPPEN, THE CAR LOOSES POWER, AND BURNS UP THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. ALSO WHEN IT HAPPENS, YOU RISK THE CHANCE OF NEARLY BLOWING THE TRANSMISSION, BEING RUN OFF THE ROAD, BEING FORCED TO STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, AND BEING IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, BECAUSE THE CAR ALL OF SUDDEN STOPS MOVING!THIS IS SO SAD THAT I CANNOT REALLY ENJOY MY VEHICLE, AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS HERE! MAZDA HAS NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED THE OTHER RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE, AND THEY DON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. MAZDA IS A POOR INVESTMENT, AND THEY NEED TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THESE TRANSMISSIONS THAT THEY KNOW ARE A PIECE OF CRAP! I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER MAZDA AGAIN! *TR

THE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION IS VERY JERKY AND SHIFTS VERY HARD, AND I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF IT FAILED AGAIN AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE. Negative 1999 Mazda 626 car reviews

  1. Ramiro Sanford 2025-01-03

We purchased our red Mazda hot rod used, after a two-year lease with approximately 36,000 miles. Since then, we have put 148,000 miles on it, and it has been a reliable vehicle with no unusual problems. Despite normal maintenance, there is now some corrosion underneath the car around suspension components and the gas tank. Our trusted mechanic advised against driving it 250 miles to university, as it could break down far from home. This car has taken my family on trips across the US and is now in semi-retirement, shuttling my youngest son to school and back (10 miles). Although it's now our 'beater', it still looks great with its red, rust-free exterior, leather seats, and shiny aluminum wheels.

  2. Eriberto Collier 2024-10-21

The car's transmission failed at 155k and there were significant exhaust problems. However, it was generally reliable and always started. The only recurring issue was the need to change the O2 sensor once a year.

  3. Jed Zboncak 2024-09-05

The car has some areas for improvement, such as the door seals that have come apart and the lack of ABS brakes affecting the braking performance. Additionally, the power windows operate at a slower speed and the radio is of a lower quality. While the ride is generally smooth, high-speed turns can be unsettling. It is worth noting that the car's resale value is not particularly strong.

  4. Leif Roob 2024-08-29

Despite some recent issues, I have taken great care of my car since purchasing it with 45K miles. Unfortunately, at 100K miles, a few problems have arisen, including a faulty alternator, an unknown O2 sensor issue, oil leaks in the exhaust valve and piston ring, a fuel injector problem, and a vacuum leak. Additionally, the antenna has been broken since shortly after purchase, and a broken sway bar was only discovered when changing the brakes. While the alternator is difficult to access, I am confident in my ability to address these issues and restore my car to its former condition.

  5. Benjamin Herman 2024-07-19

This car blew its engine at 116,000 miles. It was very well maintained, but unfortunately, Mazdas tend to lose value quickly and are not the best engineered vehicles. I purchased it based on its appearance before I entered my career in car appraisals and learned which vehicles hold their value better and have a better track record for performance. While it looks cute and drives okay, it is not the best value and is cheaply made.

Positive 1999 Mazda 626 car reviews

  1. Deontae Klocko 2025-01-06

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought my 1999 Mazda back in May and it's been great so far. It has over 207,000 miles on it and all I've done is an oil change and lubing. I really appreciate all the extra features that come with it, there are too many to describe! After owning a Ford F-150 4x4, I'm really enjoying the gas mileage I get with the Mazda.

  2. Amir Rice 2024-11-25

I've owned my car for three years and haven't had any issues with any of its components. Just taking care of regular maintenance was all that was needed. I must say, the dealership service was exceptional!

  3. Jaylan Howell 2024-11-17

I bought my 626 a couple of years ago and I have to say, it's the best car I've ever owned! In my opinion, the ES is a much nicer option than the LX, even if the differences are small. I truly believe that it's worth the extra money. Plus, the car is pretty quick and has been incredibly reliable on long cross country trips. Personally, I would choose a 626 ES over a Corolla any day!

  4. Major Thiel 2024-11-09

What a fantastic car! It's incredibly reliable and easy to drive. The 626 LX V6 outperforms its competitors like the Accord and Camry, and does so with style. I always get compliments on how beautiful it looks, and it's hard to believe that it's so affordable. The leather seats, moonroof, and power features make it feel like a luxury car without the high price tag. Overall, I highly recommend the 626 LX V6 to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish car.

  5. Dereck O'Conner 2024-11-03

Bought new and have no regrets. You'll be happy to know that I have the car maintained regularly and it is garage kept. It has not broken down on me yet and the repairs have really only been maintenance items. I must say, it's the best car I have ever owned in terms of reliability.
