Mazda 626 problems
The Mazda Capella, also known as the 626 in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Mazda from 1970 until 2002. Sold in the Japanese domestic market under the Capella name, the vehicle was also commonly known in other major markets as the Mazda 626. Ford, Mazda's partner at the time, also used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe. 4,345,279 of the 626 and Telstar models were sold worldwide.
Designed to compete against Japanese mid-size stalwarts such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona, and Nissan Bluebird, the Capella was succeeded by the Mazda6 (Atenza) in 2002.
The car was named after Capella, the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, the sixth-brightest in the night sky and the third-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus and Vega.

Common Mazda 626 problems
The Mazda 626 is a popular vehicle, but like any car, it can experience some common problems over time. One of the most frequently reported issues is transmission failure, which affects both automatic and manual transmissions. Symptoms of transmission failure include difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, and leaking transmission fluid. If left unaddressed, a failing transmission can cause significant damage to other components in the vehicle, resulting in costly repairs. This issue has been reported by over 150 owners, primarily in model years ranging from 1995 to 2002.
Another common problem experienced by Mazda 626 owners is a crank but no start issue, which occurs when the engine cranks but fails to start and run independently. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, failed ignition coil, or a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor. Additionally, issues with the timing belt or camshaft position sensor can also cause this problem. This issue has been reported in model years from 1993 to 2002, with repairs costing up to $1000.
The intake manifold gasket is another common problem area in the Mazda 626. If the gasket fails, air can leak into the system, causing rough idle and other issues, such as reduced power or acceleration. The cost to repair these issues ranges from $502-575. Some common causes of intake manifold gasket failure include age, heat, and pressure. If you suspect a vacuum leak or notice a rough idle in your Mazda 626, it's important to have the intake manifold gasket inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and resolve the problem before it causes further damage to the engine.
In addition to these mechanical issues, potential Mazda 626 owners should also be aware of potential problems with the bodywork and mechanical parts. When buying a used Mazda 626, it's important to choose only the smartest, well-cared examples and be especially vigilant over the bodywork. Watch out for dents, signs of over-spray, and bodged repairs, as body parts can work out expensive. Mechanical parts are generally robust with regular servicing, but when cars get older and less valuable, it's not uncommon for some owners to skimp on maintenance. Claims made by Warranty Direct customers suggest that the suspension, axles, brakes, and electrics are where potential trouble may lie, so inspect these closely.
In summary, while the Mazda 626 is a good value, potential owners should be aware of common problems with the transmission, crank but no start issue, and intake manifold gasket. These issues can lead to significant damage to other components in the vehicle and costly repairs if left unaddressed. Additionally, potential buyers should be vigilant over the bodywork and mechanical parts when buying a used Mazda 626.
What is the common problem with Mazda 626?
In conclusion, while the 626 is a good value, there are many issues. These issues include transmission failure, crank but no start problems, and intake manifold gasket failure. Left unaddressed, these problems can lead to significant damage to other components in the vehicle and costly repairs.
How many miles can a Mazda 626 last?
The estimated lifespan of a Mazda 626 is 217,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.
Is the Mazda 626 a good car?
Reliable Car, low maintenance
Purchased my mazda 626 used and had it for 4 years. It is reliable and low maintenance. Had no major mechanical or electrical issue. Rating breakdown (out of 5):
What causes a Mazda 626 to not start?
Your first step is to check your distributor. There's a good chance that this has reached its end of life and will need to be replaced with a new one from BreakerYard. If not, then disconnect the Spark Output Connector, wait ten minutes and reconnect and then look for an ignition spark. This often resolves the problem.

We've been driving our Chestnut 5-speed ES for a year and a half now and have put on 45,000 miles. We also have a '93 and a '97 in the family. I was hoping for better mileage than the automatic, but it seems the final gear ratio on the Automatic OD must be higher (about 3700 rpm at 75 mph, which it can do all day without complaint). However, there's no lack of punch off the line, and the tires show it. It feels heavier yet less solid in the curves than my '84 Saab 900 (which got 30.5 mpg), but it's still so much better.

I've owned my 626 for 4 years and it's been a reliable companion. I purchased it used, so it's now about 8 years old, but it still turns heads. I've kept up with regular maintenance, including changing the timing belt and exhaust system at 60,000 miles, which are normal things for any car of this age. I believe that staying on top of maintenance is key to keeping a car running smoothly. Overall, I'm very happy with my 626 and it has never let me down or left me stranded.

I bought this car for $2000 and loved it. I drove it until this year when the third transmission went out. I've put at least $3500 into fixing it, but unfortunately, I cannot find a replacement transmission. The car has 171,000 miles on it and has a wonderful body, including a sunroof. Although it ran well, it did require a lot of maintenance. Now, it's just sitting around waiting for someone to buy it.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Mazda 626. I've noticed some negative reviews online, but I have to say that mine has been a real trooper! My sister and I have both driven it for over 200,000 miles and it's still going strong. We've hardly had to spend any money on maintenance, and even though it's over 15 years old, it's still running well. I'm actually planning on getting a new car soon, but I'm going to give this one to my dad to drive until it finally gives up. I have noticed a few minor issues, like a possible problem with the alternator, but considering how long it's lasted and how little it's cost me, I really can't complain. Thanks for listening!

I was given a Mazda 626 with only 37k miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with the car since then. I've had to replace the alternator a few times and have experienced some transmission leaks. The car's axis has also been problematic and the engine tends to overheat. Despite my efforts to fix these issues, they seem to persist. I've spent a lot of money on repairs and have been disappointed with the results. While I've had a negative experience with this particular car, I understand that others may have had different experiences. Thank you for considering my feedback.

I use this car to commute to work and the miles on it are highway miles only. I've enjoyed using the car for commuting, but unfortunately, I've had to replace the transmission three times. However, I want to clarify that I have owned many vehicles (currently own 4) and have never had any issues with transmissions going out on me. Overall, the car has been average for me, and I would have been really happy with it if the transmissions had not gone out. Interestingly, the mechanics who worked on my car mentioned that transmissions tend to go out on the Mazda 626.

The Mazda 626 is not a suitable car for those who prioritize speed and safety. In my experience, I have had to replace several parts and even purchase a new engine. Unfortunately, the car is also quite unreliable and frequently breaks down, causing inconvenience. However, it is important to note that these are my personal experiences and opinions, and others may have had different experiences with the car.

I'm having some trouble with the transmission in my car. Unfortunately, it went out at 80,000 miles and has been in the shop five times since it was first fixed in December 2001. Currently, my car has been in the shop for almost three weeks due to the transmission going out for the fifth time.

What a great story! It's amazing to hear that your wife's Mazda has been running strong for the past 4 years, even with 208,000 miles on it. It's interesting to hear that you were initially unsure about Mazda, but this car has proven to be just as reliable as your Accord. The clutch is still going strong after all this time, which is really impressive. It's great to hear that the 5 speed transmission is working so well for you.
