Mazda 626 problems

The Mazda Capella, also known as the 626 in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Mazda from 1970 until 2002. Sold in the Japanese domestic market under the Capella name, the vehicle was also commonly known in other major markets as the Mazda 626. Ford, Mazda's partner at the time, also used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe. 4,345,279 of the 626 and Telstar models were sold worldwide.
Designed to compete against Japanese mid-size stalwarts such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona, and Nissan Bluebird, the Capella was succeeded by the Mazda6 (Atenza) in 2002.
The car was named after Capella, the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, the sixth-brightest in the night sky and the third-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus and Vega.

Common Mazda 626 problems
The Mazda 626 is a popular vehicle, but like any car, it can experience some common problems over time. One of the most frequently reported issues is transmission failure, which affects both automatic and manual transmissions. Symptoms of transmission failure include difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, and leaking transmission fluid. If left unaddressed, a failing transmission can cause significant damage to other components in the vehicle, resulting in costly repairs. This issue has been reported by over 150 owners, primarily in model years ranging from 1995 to 2002.
Another common problem experienced by Mazda 626 owners is a crank but no start issue, which occurs when the engine cranks but fails to start and run independently. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, failed ignition coil, or a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor. Additionally, issues with the timing belt or camshaft position sensor can also cause this problem. This issue has been reported in model years from 1993 to 2002, with repairs costing up to $1000.
The intake manifold gasket is another common problem area in the Mazda 626. If the gasket fails, air can leak into the system, causing rough idle and other issues, such as reduced power or acceleration. The cost to repair these issues ranges from $502-575. Some common causes of intake manifold gasket failure include age, heat, and pressure. If you suspect a vacuum leak or notice a rough idle in your Mazda 626, it's important to have the intake manifold gasket inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and resolve the problem before it causes further damage to the engine.
In addition to these mechanical issues, potential Mazda 626 owners should also be aware of potential problems with the bodywork and mechanical parts. When buying a used Mazda 626, it's important to choose only the smartest, well-cared examples and be especially vigilant over the bodywork. Watch out for dents, signs of over-spray, and bodged repairs, as body parts can work out expensive. Mechanical parts are generally robust with regular servicing, but when cars get older and less valuable, it's not uncommon for some owners to skimp on maintenance. Claims made by Warranty Direct customers suggest that the suspension, axles, brakes, and electrics are where potential trouble may lie, so inspect these closely.
In summary, while the Mazda 626 is a good value, potential owners should be aware of common problems with the transmission, crank but no start issue, and intake manifold gasket. These issues can lead to significant damage to other components in the vehicle and costly repairs if left unaddressed. Additionally, potential buyers should be vigilant over the bodywork and mechanical parts when buying a used Mazda 626.
What is the common problem with Mazda 626?
In conclusion, while the 626 is a good value, there are many issues. These issues include transmission failure, crank but no start problems, and intake manifold gasket failure. Left unaddressed, these problems can lead to significant damage to other components in the vehicle and costly repairs.
How many miles can a Mazda 626 last?
The estimated lifespan of a Mazda 626 is 217,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.
Is the Mazda 626 a good car?
Reliable Car, low maintenance
Purchased my mazda 626 used and had it for 4 years. It is reliable and low maintenance. Had no major mechanical or electrical issue. Rating breakdown (out of 5):
What causes a Mazda 626 to not start?
Your first step is to check your distributor. There's a good chance that this has reached its end of life and will need to be replaced with a new one from BreakerYard. If not, then disconnect the Spark Output Connector, wait ten minutes and reconnect and then look for an ignition spark. This often resolves the problem.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Mazda car. I bought it with 213,600 miles on it and it ran great! Even after driving it for another 6,000 miles, it still ran smoothly. I was amazed to read that this car can often survive for 280,000+ miles. While driving it, I felt like it had at least 100,000 miles less on it. I really appreciate the designers of this vehicle. Unlike some other car companies these days, Mazda designs their cars to last!

I am a proud owner of a second Mazda 626 LX V6 that gets an average of 21 mpg. The car has an elegant style and acceptable craftsmanship. The added simulated wood grain trim really makes the car look classy. It is hard to believe that this sedan is very nimble and fun to drive, making it great for midlifers and above! Although I had a minor issue with the paint around the fog lamp plastic bezzel peeling off when I power washed the car at 3500 miles, the dealer agreed to fix it after consulting with the regional service manager. Overall, I am very happy with my Mazda and would highly recommend it!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 98 Mazda 626 that I bought about three weeks ago with 232k miles on it. I have to say, I feel like I'm driving a brand new car! The interior, exterior, and engine are all in great condition. In fact, the engine is so quiet that when I stopped at a traffic light, I thought it had stopped running! The gas mileage is excellent and the build quality is superb. The only thing I've noticed is that the clutch is a bit stiff, but I'm not sure if it needs to be replaced or if that's just the way it is. Two years later, I lubricated the clutch and replaced the engine seal for $130. Now it has 265k miles on it and it runs like a dream!

Vehicle year: 1992
Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my Mazda car. I bought it for a great deal of $350, even though it had a bad head gasket, because the previous owners had let their son drive it to school for three years. After investing about $600 into fixing it up, I was able to drive it for 4 years without any issues! At first, it was getting around 32-34 MPG, but recently I was able to get about 35-38 MPG on the freeway. One time, I even got 542 miles with just over 13 gallons of gas, which is about 41 MPG! Unfortunately, the head gasket went out again last year during the winter, and I decided to buy an Oldsmobile instead of fixing it in the cold weather. The Oldsmobile only got about 24 MPG and drove like a boat, so I decided to fix my Mazda again. I'm happy to say that it drives like a racecar and got 37 MPG on the last tank! I absolutely love this car!!! By the way, the head gasket parts only cost me $250.

This has been a great dependable vehicle. The good gas mileage and dependability are what make it as good as Toyota or Honda.

The transmission failed at 90,000 miles. As a transmission shop with extensive experience working on 626's, we can confidently state that the typical lifespan for the Ford transmission in the 626 is between 90,000 and 100,000 miles.

Very nice and comfortable family sedan that gets over 30mpg. However, I would recommend caution when considering this car due to a potential design flaw in the auto transmission. The transmission may overheat during extended highway use, causing failure. If you do decide to purchase this car, make sure it has a transmission cooler in front of the radiator. Unfortunately, I also experienced an auto transmission failure at 80,000 miles, which cost $3500 to replace at the dealer and still isn't quite right. Overall, I would suggest exploring other options before making a decision.

I've had my Mazda 626 for 4 and a half years now, and I've learned a valuable lesson about which cars to avoid. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the transmission twice already - the first time at 17,000 miles (thankfully covered under warranty), and the second time at 91,000 miles, which cost me a whopping $2600. If you're interested in buying a Mazda 626, mine is available for purchase. It's a unique yellow color and even has a Sunkist sticker on the door, so it's easy to spot! On a side note, I would advise against buying a FORD if anyone recommends it to you. Thanks for reading!

I loved my 626 at first and had no problems with it. I made sure to take care of regular maintenance such as oil changes and other necessary items to keep my car running smoothly. However, after a year, the car experienced a sudden decline. Both the brakes and transmission failed, and unfortunately, neither were covered under warranty. It is important to be cautious before making a purchase.

I bought this car as my first car, so I didn't really care about it. It had 140,308 miles on it when I bought it, and now, 8 months later, I've managed to put 15,000 miles on it. The good news is that nothing major has gone wrong with it. I race a lot of people and I'm happy to say that I've won a lot of those races. It's a rugged car, and I've had to replace a couple of engine parts, but that's to be expected over time. Now, since I've driven it so much, my engine burns oil, but it's still going strong. As they say, 'It takes a beating and keeps on ticking.'
