Mazda 626 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda Capella, also known as the 626 in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Mazda from 1970 until 2002. Sold in the Japanese domestic market under the Capella name, the vehicle was also commonly known in other major markets as the Mazda 626. Ford, Mazda's partner at the time, also used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe. 4,345,279 of the 626 and Telstar models were sold worldwide.

Designed to compete against Japanese mid-size stalwarts such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona, and Nissan Bluebird, the Capella was succeeded by the Mazda6 (Atenza) in 2002.

The car was named after Capella, the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, the sixth-brightest in the night sky and the third-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus and Vega.

Common Mazda 626 problems

The Mazda 626 is a popular vehicle, but like any car, it can experience some common problems over time. One of the most frequently reported issues is transmission failure, which affects both automatic and manual transmissions. Symptoms of transmission failure include difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, and leaking transmission fluid. If left unaddressed, a failing transmission can cause significant damage to other components in the vehicle, resulting in costly repairs. This issue has been reported by over 150 owners, primarily in model years ranging from 1995 to 2002.

Another common problem experienced by Mazda 626 owners is a crank but no start issue, which occurs when the engine cranks but fails to start and run independently. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, failed ignition coil, or a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor. Additionally, issues with the timing belt or camshaft position sensor can also cause this problem. This issue has been reported in model years from 1993 to 2002, with repairs costing up to $1000.

The intake manifold gasket is another common problem area in the Mazda 626. If the gasket fails, air can leak into the system, causing rough idle and other issues, such as reduced power or acceleration. The cost to repair these issues ranges from $502-575. Some common causes of intake manifold gasket failure include age, heat, and pressure. If you suspect a vacuum leak or notice a rough idle in your Mazda 626, it's important to have the intake manifold gasket inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and resolve the problem before it causes further damage to the engine.

In addition to these mechanical issues, potential Mazda 626 owners should also be aware of potential problems with the bodywork and mechanical parts. When buying a used Mazda 626, it's important to choose only the smartest, well-cared examples and be especially vigilant over the bodywork. Watch out for dents, signs of over-spray, and bodged repairs, as body parts can work out expensive. Mechanical parts are generally robust with regular servicing, but when cars get older and less valuable, it's not uncommon for some owners to skimp on maintenance. Claims made by Warranty Direct customers suggest that the suspension, axles, brakes, and electrics are where potential trouble may lie, so inspect these closely.

In summary, while the Mazda 626 is a good value, potential owners should be aware of common problems with the transmission, crank but no start issue, and intake manifold gasket. These issues can lead to significant damage to other components in the vehicle and costly repairs if left unaddressed. Additionally, potential buyers should be vigilant over the bodywork and mechanical parts when buying a used Mazda 626.

Reliable Car, low maintenance

What causes a Mazda 626 to not start?

Your first step is to check your distributor. There's a good chance that this has reached its end of life and will need to be replaced with a new one from BreakerYard. If not, then disconnect the Spark Output Connector, wait ten minutes and reconnect and then look for an ignition spark. This often resolves the problem.

Latest negative Mazda 626 car reviews

  1. Santiago Waelchi 2025-04-19

    Vehicle year: 2002

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Mazda 626. When I first bought it, I was really excited because I've always thought of Mazda as a company like Toyota or Honda - a company that stands behind its quality cars. However, I've had some issues with my car recently. It's only 3 years old, and had a full inspection upon purchase, but it needs a new transmission already. Despite this, I have to say that the interior is spacious and borderline elegant, and the exterior is solid and sturdy. I just wish the car was more reliable. I've heard that the transmission used in my car is the same as the one used in the 2002 Ford Probe, which was also faulty. I think it's important to be aware of these issues before making a purchase. While Mazda hasn't provided an extended warranty, I'm hopeful that they will take responsibility for their mistakes in the future. Thank you for listening!

  2. Jamie Mann 2025-04-19

    Vehicle year: 1991

I got my Mazda when it had about 77,000 miles on it and it now has over 180,000. The engine is in great condition, but I have had to put quite a lot of money into repairing the suspension system. While Mazdas are great cars, I have found that the cost of parts can be quite high, often three times the cost of parts for a standard domestic car. Despite this, my 626 has served me well. If you're considering purchasing a Mazda, my advice would be to find a good mechanic who is familiar with the brand.

  3. Evert Cole 2025-04-18

    Vehicle year: 1993

This is the very first car I bought from a dealership (as opposed to buying from my parents). It has fantastic amounts of room for both front and rear passengers, as well as trunk space. Despite the high mileage, we have had very few repairs, and none costing more than $800. Our mechanic says it will last forever. I have the stick-shift model and highly recommend it. Manuals rule! My husband wants to trade it in for a new car, but we're having trouble finding something that matches the space for a reasonable price.

I purchased this vehicle new, and although it has had some issues, I have taken care of them promptly. The transmission was replaced at 24,000 miles, the steering column twice, and the timing belt at 1,000 miles. Despite some ongoing challenges with the engine light and fuel economy, I have invested $4,000 in repairs and maintenance to ensure that it runs smoothly. I am confident in my ability to address any future issues that may arise.

The car has experienced several mechanical issues, including transmission failure at 45K miles, despite being well-maintained. Although some repairs were covered under warranty, additional repairs were still required.

I received the car as a gift from my uncle. Although it has some issues such as the clutch pedal getting stuck sometimes, a bent rim lip causing air leakage, power steering and gas leaks, and a badly damaged frame, I have done some brake work including replacing wheel cylinders, pads, shoes, and brake lines. I also bought new rear speakers. Unfortunately, the air conditioning does not work at all due to a short in the circuitry that blows the fuse every time I replace it.

I really like this car for several reasons. Firstly, the interior comforts are fantastic, and I especially love features like the Swing Vents. Secondly, the acceleration is good, although it may not be comparable to a Chrysler V6. Thirdly, I have driven this car over the NH mountains without any issues. Finally, I have only had to recharge the AC once at about 97kmiles and replace the timing belt, but since then the AC has been working perfectly. I have also kept up with regular oil changes and the 90000 service. The only issue I have had was with the transmission hose, which I recently had to replace due to some problems.

Hi there! Thanks for sharing your experience with your Mazda. It sounds like you've had some ups and downs with it, but overall it seems like a nice and simple car for both short and long trips. It's a shame that you had to rebuild the transmission at only 70-80K miles, especially since most Mazdas can go up to 200K miles. Additionally, it's disappointing that many of the interior plastic linings came loose, which could be due to lousy fabrication/craftsmanship. However, it's great to hear that the car is comfy, quiet, and mostly reliable. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

My wife purchased a 4-cylinder LX in 1994, which was a 1995 'Mazda program car' with only 18K miles on it. It now has 107K miles and has been very reliable throughout our 15 years of ownership. The only major services it has required were a new timing belt and replacement of the front drive axle gear (tie rods, links, boot covers...). We did have to replace the transmission in 1999 when the transmission light came on, but we couldn't feel anything different and suspect that the car was abused prior to our purchase. Since then, we have had no transmission problems. Although we have since purchased a new 2004 MPV to accommodate our growing family, the 626 is still going strong. We even considered purchasing a Mazdaspeed3, but the 626 has been such a reliable car that we haven't had the need to replace it yet.

Hey there! A reviewer mentioned that this car has a transmission without a filter. To keep the solenoid valves from gumming up with dirty transmission oil, it's a good idea to change the oil regularly. A little preventive maintenance can go a long way in keeping this car on the road and out of the shop. One guy wrote that he bought the car at 113,000 miles and just 2,000 miles later, the transmission went out. So, it's worth asking yourself, did the previous owner change the transmission oil frequently (every 35,000 miles)?
