The Dodge Stratus is a mid-size car that was introduced by Dodge in December 1994 and was based on the 4-door sedan Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Plymouth Breeze, and Chrysler Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. An updated version of the Stratus was introduced for 2001, with the Cirrus being renamed as the Chrysler Sebring, and a coupé model was also added to the range. Production ended in early 2006 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant after building 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.

The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.

After the discontinuation of the Stratus sedan in 2006, the assembly line and tooling were sold to the Russian concern, GAZ, which manufactured 9,000 units of a very slightly modified Stratus from 2008 through 2010 called the Volga Siber.

Common 1997 Dodge Stratus problems

The 1997 Dodge Stratus has several common problems that owners have reported, including issues with the timing belt, front suspension, brakes, engine noise, fuel injectors, and alternator.

One of the most frequently reported problems is the timing belt, which can cause significant engine damage if it fails. The timing belt is a critical component that synchronizes the engine's camshaft and crankshaft, ensuring that the engine's valves open and close at the correct times. If the timing belt fails, the engine's valves can collide with the pistons, causing extensive damage to the engine.

Another common problem with the 1997 Dodge Stratus is the front suspension, which can cause recurring problems such as rattles and other noises. The front suspension is responsible for supporting the weight of the vehicle and allowing it to steer and handle correctly. If the front suspension is not functioning correctly, it can cause a range of problems, including poor handling, uneven tire wear, and excessive noise.

The brakes are another area where the 1997 Dodge Stratus has been reported to have problems. The brakes are a critical safety feature of any vehicle, and any issues with the brakes can be a significant safety concern. Owners of the 1997 Dodge Stratus have reported problems with the brakes, including noise, vibration, and reduced braking performance.

Engine noise is another common problem with the 1997 Dodge Stratus. Owners have reported hearing knocking noises from the engine, which can be a sign of serious engine problems. Knocking noises can be caused by a range of issues, including worn or damaged engine bearings, low oil pressure, or problems with the fuel injectors.

The fuel injectors are another area where the 1997 Dodge Stratus has been reported to have problems. Owners have reported hearing a whining noise from the fuel injectors, which can be a sign of a problem with the fuel injectors or the fuel system. Fuel injectors are responsible for delivering fuel to the engine, and any problems with the fuel injectors can affect the engine's performance and fuel efficiency.

Finally, the alternator is another component that has been reported to cause problems in the 1997 Dodge Stratus. The alternator is responsible for charging the battery and providing power to the vehicle's electrical systems. If the alternator fails, it can cause a range of problems, including difficulty starting the vehicle, dim headlights, and other electrical issues.

In summary, the 1997 Dodge Stratus has several common problems that owners have reported, including issues with the timing belt, front suspension, brakes, engine noise, fuel injectors, and alternator. These problems can affect the vehicle's performance, safety, and reliability, and should be addressed promptly to avoid further damage or safety concerns.

So reliable car!

After 20 years being manufactured, my car works great, the big issue is with the front end. At least 2 times a year, for the last 5 years I had to repair it. Parts are difficult to find and original or replacement parts, last the same time. I used it every day and its nice to drive.

HESITATION ON SHIFTING INTO GEAR, SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR AND BACK IN ON TURNS, TRANS LEAKS, SLIPPING INTO GEAR SUDDENLY AND JERKING THE CAR, AND SO ON. CAR HAS ONLY 66,000 MILES ON IT NOW AND I GOT IT IN 2001 WHEN MY FATHER PASSED AWAY. IT HAD ONLY 53,000 MILES ON IT THEN. A TRANS SHOULDN'T BE GOING OUT AT 50-60,000 MILES. IF DODGE HAS A BAD PRODUCT THEY SHOULD CORRECT IT THEMSELVES. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY TO REPAIR A PROBLEM DODGE ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT AND ISN'T DOING ANYTHING ABOUT. I NEVER HAUL OR PULL ANYTHING AND I ONLY PUT 13,000 MILES ON IT IN FIVE YEARS. NOT HEAVY DRIVING. I SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL AND DODGE REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING OR PAY FOR REPAIR- JUST SAYING "IT'S PAST WARRANTY". I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPAIR BUT I SHOULD HAVE A VEHICLE COMPANY THAT IS PROUD OF IT'S PRODUCT ENOUGH TO STAND BEHIND IT. I ONLY GET $867 A MONTH RETIREMENT AND I'M 60 YEARS OF AGE. DAIMLER-CHRYSLER SHOULD HAVE MADE REPAIRS WHEN I FIRST CONTACTED THEM A YEAR AGO. THIS IS A DAILY PROBLEM AND GETTING WORSE. HUNDREDS OF FAILURES. I HAVE TO USE THE CAR FOR PET CARE SO JUST CONTINUE TO PUTT ALONG UNTIL IT (THE TRANS) GOES OUT COMPLETELY. *NM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-05-18
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1B3EJ46C8VN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WE HAD FREQUENT ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH THE CAR AND TOOK IT TO THE LIBERTY DEALERSHIP IN JOHNSTOWN, OH TO GET THEM FIXED UNTIL WE GOT TO THE POINT THAT IT WAS GOING TO TAKE MORE THAN THE CARE WAS VALUED TO GUARANTEE THE FIX. THESE ITEMS WERE NOT COVERED UNDER OUR WARRANTY. ONE DAY AFTER PULLING INTO OUR DRIVEWAY AFTER WORK, I SHUT THE CAR OFF, OPENED THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR WHILE PULLING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, GIVING ME A PRETTY GOOD SHOT IN THE FACE. THE CAR WAS SITTING STILL AND NOT RUNNING. THE KEYS WEREN'T EVEN IN THE IGNITION. I CALLED CHRYSLER'S CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE AND FILED AN INCIDENT. THEY ASSIGNED A.L. GILBERT TO WORK ON THE CASE. A INVESTIGATOR WAS DEPLOYED FROM A PRIVATE COMPANY OUT OF DAYTON, OH. HE TOOK THE CAR TO A DEALERSHIP IN MT. VERNON, OH AND DETERMINED BY LOOKING AT THE CAR'S COMPUTER THAT IT HAD BEEN WRECKED. OBVIOUSLY, THIS WASN'T THE CASE AS THERE WASN'T A DENT OR SCRATCH ON THE CAR AND I WAS SITTING STILL IN THE DRIVEWAY. HOWEVER, CHRYSLER REFUSED TO CHANGE THEIR DETERMINATION. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS REQUESTED MULTIPLE TIMES, A COPY OF THE REPORT FROM THE INVESTIGATOR FROM DAYTON, OH WAS NEVER PROVIDED ME. A.L. GILBERT BLATANTLY CALLED ME DISHONEST BECAUSE HE SAID THE COMPUTER DIDN'T LIE. I CONVINCED HIM TO LET ME TAKE IT TO THE LIBERTY DEALERSHIP AND HAVE THE SERVICE MANAGER LOOK AT THE CAR WHILE ON THE PHONE WITH HIM. THE LIBERTY SERVICE MANAGER TOLD A.L. GILBERT THAT THERE WAS NO VISIBLE EVIDENCE OF ANY ACCIDENT ON THE CAR. A.L. GILBERT SAID THERE ABSOLUTELY HAD TO BE SOMETHING BECAUSE THE COMPUTER SAID SO. THE LIBERT SERVICE MECHANIC SAID, IN FACT THE ONLY SCRATCH I SEE IS ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND LOOKS LIKE HE'S DRIVEN ON A GRAVEL ROAD. GILBERT RESPONDED AND SAID THAT WAS ALL THE EVIDENCE HE NEEDED AND THAT THE DECISION STOOD. I STILL DRIVE THE CAR TODAY BUT WITHOUT AIR BAGS AND WITH A DASH THAT LIGHTS UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE BECAUSE OF THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. *NM

  • Summary: DT: THE VEHICLE IS A 1997 DODGE STRATUS. AT 27,000 THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON WHILE THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING AND THE VEHICLE CUT OFF. WHEN THE CONSUMER HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY REPLACED THE TIMING BELT AND PULLEYS. AT 39,000 THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START. WHEN IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN, THEY FOUND THAT ONE COIL WAS SHORTED, THE PCM WAS BAD, THE TIMING BELT HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN, THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE MODULE, THE RELAY, AND THE PLUG WIRE. THE WHOLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED. LATER AT 62,000 MILES IT WAS LEAKING OIL AND WOULD NOT START. IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WERE THE TIMING BELT HAD TO BE REPLACED A THIRD TIME, THE HEAD GASKET AND PACKAGE, THE PLUG AND PLUG WIRES, AND THE SPARK PLUGS WERE ALSO REPLACED. CURRENTLY AT 89,000 THE TIMING BELT AND HEAD GASKET NEED REPLACING. THE VEHICLE IS OVER HEATING AND WILL NOT START. THIS CAUSED THE HEATER CORE TO GO OUT. THE CLUSTER HAS GONE OUT; THE WHOLE LIGHTING SYSTEM COMES ON AND GOES OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THESE CURRENT PROBLEMS HAVE NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS OF NOW. THERE ARE OTHER ISSUES THAT ARE INCLUDED IN A RECALL FOR THE LOWER BALL JOINTS AND FOR THE FLOOR SHIFTER. THE VEHICLE WAS IMMOBILE SO THE CONSUMER CAN NOT TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE RECALLS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER TOLD THE CONSUMER THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. *JB

Negative 1997 Dodge Stratus car reviews

  1. Grant Nolan 2025-01-05

I purchased this car in 2001 with 69,000 miles on it. Despite my initial excitement, I soon found myself disappointed with its performance. The brakes required frequent replacement, and I discovered that this was a common issue among other owners as well. Additionally, I experienced five recalls within the first year of ownership. The car also required repairs to the hoses, air conditioner, and gaskets, which left me financially strained. However, I am confident in my decision to move on from this car and find a more reliable vehicle.

  2. Marvin Nitzsche 2024-11-19

This car is not the best option. It has had some issues in the past, such as transmission leakage at 40k miles, head gasket failure at 50k miles, engine oil leakage at 54k miles, and valve cover gasket leakage at 57k miles. It may be better to consider other options.

  3. Franz Koelpin 2024-09-05

After purchasing this vehicle, I experienced a series of issues, including problems with hoses, alternators, and more, culminating in a fire that occurred over an hour after the car was parked. In hindsight, I regret not having full coverage on the vehicle. Interestingly, a co-worker of mine had a similar experience with her Stratus. It's important to be aware of these issues.

  4. Bartholome Pacocha 2024-08-29

This car has had some serious issues that have required significant repairs, including the transmission and brake system. Despite the expenses, I have taken care of these repairs and ensured that the car is in top condition. However, due to recent issues with the steering, I have decided to move on from this vehicle. While I have had some challenges with this car, I am confident in my ability to make informed decisions when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle.

  5. Gardner Wolf 2024-08-08

This car has been a great basic car. The fuel mileage has been fantastic, as I get an average of 37 MPG in summer and 31 MPG in winter with my 4-cylinder standard. Although I had to replace a head gasket at 90,000, it has been a reliable car overall.

I'm glad to hear that you're pleased with the vehicle!

  2. Vinnie O'Reilly 2024-11-24

I have had mine for about a year. It needed brakes when I bought it, and the A/C was not working after the second week (a dealership issue not a car issue). However, it's peppy and handles well in all conditions, including rain and snow (autostick).

  3. Neal Brekke 2024-11-13

I think the Dodge Stratus is one of the most valuable American cars. It's a nice and comfortable car, and I love it.

  4. Orlo Waelchi 2024-10-13

You made an excellent choice with this car! Despite having 100,000 miles on it, it's still going strong and has received numerous compliments. It's no surprise that people are impressed with how fast it is. This car is incredibly reliable and has only needed routine maintenance such as tune-ups, oil changes, and brakes. It even handles well in the snow. Plus, it looks sporty and drives like a dream!

  5. Nigel Mraz 2024-09-21

I purchased this car used in August 2001 with 42,000 miles on it. It has been running well and currently has 67,000 miles. Recently, I had to replace the power brake booster for $230 and the factory warped rotors with new aftermarket ones for $100. I also had the car in for its 60,000-mile service, which cost $150. The only other issue I have experienced is with sub-zero cold starts during Wisconsin winters. The car requires a little gas and a couple of minutes to get the shivers worked out, but this is to be expected with a 6-year-old vehicle.
