2014 Lincoln Mkt problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln MKT is a full-size luxury crossover SUV with 3-row seating that was marketed by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company; a single generation was produced from the 2010 to the 2019 model years. Slotted between the Lincoln MKX (renamed the Lincoln Nautilus) and the Lincoln Navigator, the MKT shared its Ford D4 chassis with the Ford Flex CUV and the 2011-2019 Ford Explorer.

While the MKT had no direct Lincoln predecessor, its introduction coincided with the discontinuation of the Mercury Mountaineer (based on the Ford Explorer); a livery variant of the MKT continued the use of the Lincoln Town Car name.

After the 2019 model year, Ford ended the use of its D3/D4 chassis, discontinuing the MKT and counterparts. Within the Lincoln model range, the MKT was not directly replaced, but the second-generation Lincoln Aviator is a 3-row Lincoln CUV. It is mid-size and slotted between the Nautilus and Navigator.

Throughout its production, the MKT was assembled by Ford of Canada at its Oakville Assembly facility at Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-12
  • VIN: 2LMHJ5AT7EB
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: My 2014 Lincoln MKT has two moonroofs. The first one exploded on 9/12/22 while driving the car on a sunny, wind free day. Sounded like a gunshot hit the glass and was frightening. Car is 8 years old at time of incident. I see this has been an ongoing issue with Ford/Lincoln since 2007. These parts need t be recalled. The glass alone is $3300 with total 3 day repair over $5K! Had to find a glass vendor who could shrink wrap exterior/interior so glass would not fall into vehicle and rain would not enter vehicle. See class action lawsuits have been previously filed.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-15
  • VIN: 2lmhj5fk4eb
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: 2014 Lincoln MKT, approx 80,000 miles, excellent condition. For the second time in two years now our factory installed panoramic roof has spontaneously exploded. First incident was January 21, 2020 and the second was July 15, 2022. Both times my husband was driving on the freeway and heard a loud explosion, sounded like gunshots inside the car. Both times the sound startled us so badly that a jerk reaction nearly sent us into the freeway wall. Glass shards raining down into the car. Upon researching I have come to know that several Ford and Lincoln models from 2008-2015ish have had this same exact issue. This glass shattering issue is a serious design flaw from the manufacturer that is going to get someone killed one day. Not only having glass flying off of your car while also raining down on you while you are driving, but the SOUND of the explosion is seriously shocking and terrifying. Also, because the design of the panoramic roofs have been modified it is very difficult for Ford to find replacements for our model. The first time we had to get a rental for over a month because they could only find a used part, which our auto body denied. This time our car has already been in the shop for over a month and our auto body has had TWO defective parts sent to them and Ford is now saying it could be another 60 days or so before finding another one. We are so scared to continue driving this car that once we get it back we are going to have to sell it. I am going to just have to pray that whomever might buy this car will not cause damage to themselves or others when the roof shatters next time. Lincoln/Ford needs to step up and either recall the vehicles with faulty design or come up with a permanent solution rather that just replacing a part they know is dangerous. They need to be held accountable before someone is seriously hurt or dies. (I have included several screen shots of other people reporting the same issue. I have way more than was allowed).

STEERING,SUSPENSION,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-30
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2LMHJ5AT3EB
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: On April 30, 2021 as I was driving down the road my steering wheel suddenly starting turning left to right involuntarily causing me to lose control of my car and crash. My vehicle is a total loss and I had just paid heavty deposit and financed a Lincoln Mkt with a dealership that never disclosed to me that my vehicle I just purchased had a recall on it that had been issued last year. Now I am out of my deposit, no car, criminal charges for causing an accident that I could not control, and a company that was well aware of the recall gets all their money plus some and I'm the one in the wrong. Doesn't seem right does it? Unfortuntly, the claims adjuster that inspected the vehicle to give an estimate failed to check the rear of the vehicle since all damage was in the front and driver side. I informed my insurance rep of the recall and have sent information on the recall along with the crash report of the incident. I do not recall seeing any warning lamps before this incident but I did feel that something was strange with the cars manuvering ability when accelrating or attempting to pass. It would kind of suddenly start a short of shimming of the vehicle that I have never experienced before in other vehicles driven previous to this one. Those signs were first noticed the second day after purchasing the car and two weeks later the incident occured.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: AFTER STARTING THE CAR FROM A COLD (65 DEGREE) CONDITION, THE DISPLAY SHOWED AN ERROR MESSAGE "ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" AND I OBSERVED NO POWER STEERING. THE WHEEL WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING IT RECTIFIED THE PROBLEM BUT I'M CONCERNED THAT THIS PROBLEM COULD OCCUR WHILE I'M DRIVING AND CAUSE ME TO DRIVE OFF THE ROAD DUE TO STEERING FAILURE. INDEED, AFTER RESEARCHING THE SUBJECT ONLINE, I FOUND OTHER OWNERS OF LINCOLN MKT'S, IT'S TWIN FORD FLEX, AND SOME FUSION MODELS HAVE REPORTED THE SAME ISSUE AND SOME HAVE EVEN GONE OFF THE ROAD, ALTHOUGH NO INJURIES RESULTED. I ALSO LEARNED THERE WAS A FACTORY RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE INVOLVING MKT'S UNTIL MODEL YEAR 2013, AND OTHER MODELS, BUT MY CAR IS A 2014 AND IT OBVIOUSLY HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. I'M VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE AND AM DISAPPOINTED THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY DID NOT INCLUDE MODEL YEAR 2014 IN THE RECALL. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM AND DEMAND THE FMC RECALLS THESE MODELS AS THEY SHOULD. THANK YOU.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2014 Lincoln Mkt.

2020-02-10
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Lincoln MKT and Ford Flex and Taurus vehicles with the Police Interceptor or SHO Performance Pack. The rear suspension toe links may fracture due to stress on the rear suspension.
  • Consequence: A fractured rear toe link will cause a sudden change in vehicle handling and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear suspension toe links, free of charge. Remedy parts are not currently available. Owners were notified about the recall on March 3, 2020. A second notice will be mailed when remedy parts become available, which is currently expected to be the end of September 2020. A component within the fuel pump electric module (PEM) may overheat causing a loss of electrical power to the fuel pump.
  • Consequence: A loss of power to the fuel pump will cause the engine to stall or prevent the vehicle from starting, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel PEM part number and replace the fuel PEM, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 1, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S31.

In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention circlip may not have been properly installed, and as a result, the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving and without prior warning.
  • Consequence: If the halfshaft and linkshaft become disengaged while driving, power will no longer be transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle may roll away despite the transmission being placed in 'Park', increasing the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage, free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2014. This car had numerous repairs under the extended warranty, including a new steering gear, 3 control arm replacements, rear seal replacement, adaptive cruise control replacement, and fixing numerous rattles. Although it rides very hard on rougher roads, the performance on acceleration is good and it is a smooth ride on good roads. The front seats are not comfortable due to a platform directly under your feet that does not allow you to place your feet flat on the floor. However, there is lots of room for storage. While the residual value is not high, this car is still a good investment due to its smooth ride and good performance.

The car is comfortable, roomy, quiet, and powerful enough when needed with the Ecoboost. Personally, I left a Ford Flex for it, so the styling is not an issue for me. Actually, I like both. However, there are some concerns and disappointments that I have with the car. These are known issues shared by many owners on internet forums that lead me to conclude that they are flawed designs. For instance, the light cluster that covers the width of the tailgate is known to take water and mess with the electrical of your lights and back-up camera. Unfortunately, you have to change the whole cluster which costs around 2100 dollars! It does not include the camera which costs 500 dollars. Another issue is that the climate control will on its own act up and go to high. You have to change the whole electronic panel behind the controls which costs around 600 dollars. These prices do not include labour. It is disappointing that Lincoln does not recognize any of these problems past the warranty and offers no good-will program or help. I have experienced all three problems between 80 to 85,000 miles in the last few months. For the record, I was able to source only one used light cluster. Once there....it had taken water also! In conclusion, for a so-called luxury brand, Lincoln is not offering much support to its customers on well-documented repeated MKT failures. Fortunately, I have not experienced so far another known flaw that I noticed when researching mine: « explosion » of the moonroof. I was looking at the Aviator for next year before all that. Not anymore. They lost me.

I bought this car seven years ago and it has been a great companion. However, over time, some issues arose such as the auto park, tilt and extend steering wheel, auto climate control mixing valve, rear main outer wheel bearing, and clogged sunroof weep holes that filled both front floors with water. The exhaust also needed to be replaced from converters back. Unfortunately, the engine failed due to a water pump failure that was inside the engine and was deemed unusable. Despite these issues, I loved the car and followed all maintenance checklists and recommended services. I had items repaired as they stopped working, except for the engine. Eventually, I had to give up on the car. 😥😟😩

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share our experience with the MKT so far. Unfortunately, we've had some trouble getting it started and had to have it towed to the dealer after only 300 miles. It was a bit frustrating to have to make several phone calls and wait three days for a loaner car, but we're hopeful that the dealer will be able to resolve the issue. We haven't heard back from them yet, but we're staying positive. We did want to mention that we've heard about some ignition problems with the new model, so it's definitely something to ask about if you're considering purchasing one. Overall, we think it has the potential to be a great car, but we're still waiting to see how it performs once we can actually drive it. Thanks for listening!

Overall, I am really happy with this vehicle. Mine is a fully loaded EcoBoost. Although I wish the gas mileage was a bit better, the vehicle has great power and refinement.

  2. Ayden Goyette 2024-11-15

Completely happy at 55000 miles. The service has been great and the warranty is excellent. It rides like a dream!

When we were considering replacing our MB, Lincoln wasn't initially on our list. However, it ended up making the best impression. In our opinion, the ride is better than the MB S-class and equal to the Lexus LS. This is our first time owning a Lincoln and we are thoroughly impressed! Despite its size, it handles very well. We highly recommend giving Lincoln a chance, you won't regret it!

I bought the base MKT with Elite package, rear bucket seats with console and rear entertainment about a month ago and I couldn't be happier. The car is incredibly comfortable and the middle row has tons of leg room. Being a crossover that is lower to the ground than most, my wife's grandparents were able to slip in and out with ease. I really enjoy driving it as it is very responsive and has good acceleration. Although I test drove the Ecoboost and would get that next time, what a great engine! The Ford/Microsoft Synch system has been a real pleasure to use with lots of cool features. Even after a month of ownership, I'm still excited to get in and drive it every time.

I love the unique styling of this car! It's great to have a car that stands out from the crowd. I did some comparisons with other cars like the Audi Q7, Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Buick Enclave, but none of them had the amazing features that this car has, like heated and cooled front and 2nd row seats, a fridge/freezer between the 2nd row seats, power fold 2nd and 3rd row seats, and top-notch safety features. It's definitely worth the money, especially when compared to the Ford Flex (the box). The interior quality is simply unmatched!
