Lincoln Mkt problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln MKT is a full-size luxury crossover SUV with 3-row seating that was marketed by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company; a single generation was produced from the 2010 to the 2019 model years. Slotted between the Lincoln MKX (renamed the Lincoln Nautilus) and the Lincoln Navigator, the MKT shared its Ford D4 chassis with the Ford Flex CUV and the 2011-2019 Ford Explorer.

While the MKT had no direct Lincoln predecessor, its introduction coincided with the discontinuation of the Mercury Mountaineer (based on the Ford Explorer); a livery variant of the MKT continued the use of the Lincoln Town Car name.

After the 2019 model year, Ford ended the use of its D3/D4 chassis, discontinuing the MKT and counterparts. Within the Lincoln model range, the MKT was not directly replaced, but the second-generation Lincoln Aviator is a 3-row Lincoln CUV. It is mid-size and slotted between the Nautilus and Navigator.

Throughout its production, the MKT was assembled by Ford of Canada at its Oakville Assembly facility at Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

Common Lincoln Mkt problems

Lincoln, a luxury car brand under Ford, has been criticized for its unreliability in recent years. According to a study by Consumer Reports, Lincoln was named the most unreliable car brand in 2021, second only to Tesla.

One of the most common problems with Lincoln vehicles is peeling chrome wheels, particularly with the Lincoln MKZ. The chrome wheels tend to peel off, causing the tires to lose air. A fix for this issue requires replacing the tires and may cost around $1,230.

Another common issue with Lincoln vehicles is the body/paint problem, particularly with the 2003 Lincoln Aviator. The rear panel below the tailgate window tends to crack, even with proper usage and care. This issue seems to be a manufacturing defect and has received numerous complaints from frustrated owners.

Lincoln vehicles are also known for their slipping and hard shifting, particularly with the 2006 Zephyr. The automatic transmission may develop shifting concerns as the car accumulates more miles. A powertrain control module (PCM) software update for lower mileage vehicles may correct the problem. Otherwise, a complete transmission rebuild or replacing the valve body may be necessary.

Rust damage on running board panels has also been reported by Lincoln Navigator owners. The rust buildup can cause the support structure to become unstable, and depending on the extent of the damage, owners had to either replace the brackets or the entire running board to fix the issue. This type of repair typically costs around $1,500.

In terms of reliability, the 2020 Lincoln Navigator is one of the most reliable models from the brand. The vehicle has received positive reviews for its comfort, technology, and reliability.

Lincoln's market share has traditionally centered around older (60+ years) car buyers who recognized and demanded more traditional cars that exemplified conventional American luxury. However, from 1990 to 1995, defection of Lincoln owners to other cars steadily worsened. By 1996-1997, the rate of defection to other brands on their next car purchase outstripped the ability of the Lincoln brand to account for why consumers were rejecting Lincoln and take measures to stem the slide.

Lincoln recognized that the health of the bottom line rested on selling cars to more than its existing consumer base. The brand developed three marketing and branding objectives: building relevance among a younger target, re-examining the way both older and younger consumers defined comfort, and developing creative ideas that could bridge the two groups in communications.

To begin the brand rejuvenation, Lincoln developed two new models, a luxury sports utility vehicle (the Lincoln Navigator) and a new performance-influenced luxury sedan (the Lincoln LS). The Navigator was designed to be a contemporary, fun and active luxury vehicle which would convey owners' success status in modern terms. In addition, Lincoln needed a luxury 'high performance sedan' to compete with Lexus, Infiniti, and Mercedes Benz among buyers who were not interested in the sports utility vehicle form.

In conclusion, Lincoln has faced several challenges in recent years, particularly in terms of reliability. The brand has been named the most unreliable car brand by Consumer Reports for two consecutive years, and several common problems have been reported with its vehicles. However, Lincoln has also taken steps to rejuvenate its brand and develop more reliable models, such as the 2020 Lincoln Navigator.

  • Summary: The car had a recall, and they worked on it. A few years later the power steering went out while driving and almost had an accident. They did not replace the steering gear they only worked on the steering module. If they had replaced the steering gear, it may have solved the whole problem. They know there was a problem and did not do their best to solve it. There may be thousands of vehicles waiting for the time when there could be a serious accident due to Ford's negligence. I was moving slow when the steering quit and may have saved my life or others in over vehicles. I was told it is over $4,000 to repair. I cannot afford the repair. I am without a vehicle to drive. I need it for doctors' appointments.

  • Summary: While traveling out of state, the latch on the passenger’s side door would not latch. Doing a quick google search, we found that in 2015 and 2020a recall was issued for a broken pawl spring tab. We did not own the car in 2015 and never received a notice for 2020. Since the door was unable to latch, I had to physically hold door while my husband drove down the interstate. We contacted our local Lincoln dealership and scheduled an appointment to be inspected. We were advised that we would have to pay for the repairs and to contact Ford. Ford was contacted and advised that the extended warranty had expired and they were not responsible. We never received a recall notice. We have appt October 8 with Lincoln dealership to be repaired since you’re unable to drive car without door flying open.

  • Summary: The recall work was done on 10/27/2015. Ford Lincoln knows there is a problem with the power steering. They will not redo the work that needs to be done properly because of their faulty power steering module. They did not replace the module; they only made an adjustment to it. I almost had an accident because of the faulty power steering. When it went out it is almost impossible to turn the steering wheel. This problem could have created a serious accident with another vehicle, property or even a pedestrian. Anyone owning one of these vehicles could have the same serious problem. I am on limited income and cannot afford to have the problem repaired. I should not have to pay for the repair since Ford Lincoln knows it is a problem. What happened to me was when I was making a turn around a corner the power steering when out and I almost hit a car. I struggled to get it into a parking lot. The driver of the other car followed me in to curse me out. I told him what happened. He got in and checked it and saw it was not working properly. He was nice to offer to drive it to my home a short distance away. His wife followed us in his car. He was strong enough to turn the wheel. He told me to never drive it again that it was dangerous to drive. Ford should correct the problem since it is dangerous when it suddenly goes out.

  • VIN: 2LMHJ5AT9JB
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: On [XXX] the drivers side keyless entry fell off our vehicle while traveling on the Ohio turnpike. The wiring harness held the trim component from falling off the vehicle, but caused it to fling and smash into the vehicle until we pulled off the turnpike. We duct taped the part in place until we could get the vehicle to our local Lincoln dealer. I noticed that the part had no clips to hold it into place, just double sided sticky tape that had only adhered to about 1/3 of the frame. On inspection, we noticed that the passenger side trim was also loose. I was told by Lincoln that at 53,000 miles this was a trim part and not considered an electrical component. We purchased a new component (part # BE9Z7420555BA) and had the dealership (Signature Ford of Owosso, MI) install the part. Now on [XXX] we heard a rattle coming from the drivers door. On inspection, the new part has almost came off again as well as the passenger side trim. We checked for a recall and found that the Ford Edge (the same basic vehicle with a Ford logo) has a recall on this same component. Can you be of any help in this matter. I tried shutting off the vehicle and restarting but nothing was clearing it. The button was not stuck either. After about 20 mins of driving with the hazards, I tried the button again and the hazards shut off. I believe there is an issue with the front control panel.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-20
  • Date Complaint: 2023-10-05
  • VIN: 2LMHJ5AT2DB
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I was driving and the power steering went out while driving. The power steering warning light came on as the steering went out. It was extremely difficult to steer the car. I was fortunate to keep my car under control and stop. Upon investigating how to fix the issue, I discovered the power steering in this vehicle is "electric power steering" thus no way for me to fix it by adding fluid, etc. I was away from home and found an independent garage which told me this seems to be a common problem in this year vehicle and that I had to take it to a Ford Dealership for repair. Upon investigating there are many complaints of this occurring in Lincoln MKT cars. I called Ford Motor Company and there has been no action by the company to alert owners of this and to fix it. This could have had serious consequences because it occurred while the car was in motion.

    Vehicle year: 2012

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I understand that you were looking for a vehicle with seven passenger seating and didn't want a minivan. From what you've shared, it sounds like you've done your research and test drove a few different options. It's great to hear that the J35 had good handling, but I understand that it may have felt underpowered. It seems like you found a good balance between ride and handling, although there was a slight tin can feel. Unfortunately, the gas mileage wasn't great and there were some issues with the power seats. On the bright side, the third row had plenty of leg room, although the head clearance was under 5 feet. Overall, it sounds like you found a vehicle with good utility, aside from the third row leg room. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns!

  2. Jensen Miller 2025-03-15

I purchased this car from a Ford dealership just over two years ago. It was previously owned by the service manager's wife. Although I wish I had known what TSBs were at the time, I have had to take it to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for numerous Technical Service Bulletins. Thankfully, the sunroof is now working, but it took nearly two years to fix. Unfortunately, the trunk doesn't stay elevated when it's supposed to, which has caused me some discomfort. Since June, I have had to take it to the dealership every month for one issue or another, and it has been rattling terribly since then. Although I have had some issues with the mechanics, they have eventually done the right thing. I have lost some faith in this brand and the dealerships that sell them. During Hurricane Irma, we were stranded due to a faulty turbo, and I am now on my third one. When the turbos work, the car has great pick up and go. Although it is very comfortable, it is also very unreliable. As a single mom, I would prefer an uncomfortable ride over one that could leave us stranded.

This car had numerous repairs under the extended warranty, including a new steering gear, 3 control arm replacements, rear seal replacement, adaptive cruise control replacement, and fixing numerous rattles. Although it rides very hard on rougher roads, the performance on acceleration is good and it is a smooth ride on good roads. The front seats are not comfortable due to a platform directly under your feet that does not allow you to place your feet flat on the floor. However, there is lots of room for storage. While the residual value is not high, this car is still a good investment due to its smooth ride and good performance.

Despite this, I have had to fight for the dealership to do the right thing on two occasions when their mechanics made mistakes. Although the car has great pick up and go when the turbos are working, I have had to replace them three times, and one of them went out during Hurricane Irma, leaving me stranded. As a single mom, I need a reliable car, and unfortunately, I have lost faith in this brand and the dealerships that sell them. While the car is comfortable, I would not recommend it due to its unreliability.

I looked at several other 'cross overs', but once I got behind the wheel of the MKT, the decision was easy. The MKT handles great and the EcoBoost gives it acceleration you might not expect in a car of this size/mass. The Sync Navigation system is incredible. I never thought I would want/need a car that would park itself, but the park assist actually works very well when needed. The fit and finish are outstanding. The third row is really only for smaller folks, but it can haul a lot with the seats folded down. The rear seat entertainment system is great, with a lot of options for gaming, etc. for those in the second row. I can't get a very good read on fuel economy yet, as I'm still under 1,000 miles (had 13 at purchase).

This is a 2016 Lincoln MKT. I've had this vehicle for about 6 months now and I can offer a comprehensive review. My model is a 7 passenger EcoBoost with the Elite and Technology packages and 20 inch wheels. First, those wheels look great but give you less rubber between you and the road, somewhat defeating the purpose of the 3 suspension modes. It isn't a rough riding vehicle by any means, but the 19 wheels (which are kind of ugly) likely give a better ride. The MKT is very comfortable, the seats are well padded and covered in nice leather. The power adjustable seats, pedals, and steering wheel guarantee virtually everyone will sit comfortably. I updated the Sync 3 system to the newest version to allow Apple CarPlay functionality which is a must, in my opinion. The Sync system is okay, but feels somewhat outdated. The controls are easy to use, but there are no physical buttons for the heated/cooled seats or heated steering wheel. This isn't a huge deal, but it can be a minor irritation to always have to cycle through 3 or 4 screens to get to seat/wheel controls. The tri-zone climate control (with rear seat controls) is a nice feature for the family. One minor complaint about the heated steering wheel is that it doesn't heat the top wood grain covered portion. Not a big deal, but heated all over would be better. The adaptive cruise control system works well, however it doesn't work below 12 mph, so keep that in mind. The power up/down third row is phenomenal and gives access to solid cargo room with the seats down. The second row of seating offers generous leg and head room. Third row access is fairly easy with the one touch button that tumbles the second row seats forward. However, once in the third row you'll find that due to the sloping roof line you won't be able to sit with your head upright unless you're under about 5' 3The twin turbo V6 provides more power than almost any other vehicle in its class and moves the hefty MKT quickly whenever called upon. Handling is good for a vehicle of its size, although maneuverability in tight spots is fairly poor due to the length of this vehicle. Speaking of, if you have a smaller garage, the MKT may not fit. Please take some measurements first. Overall, the 2016 MKT is a great vehicle for the family, although the third row is not as practical as one would hope. You get good technology, comfort, quietness, and power in a polarizing, but in my opinion, beautiful package. And, for better or worse, it doesn't look like every other three-row SUV. If you want to stand out a little, have understated power, a comfortable, quiet ride with decent modern tech, the MKT is a great option.

I have driven about 6500 miles on the MKT and I must say, it is an awesome vehicle! The styling is unique and stands out from the crowd, unlike the typical Lexus look-a-like. The performance is top-notch and will definitely impress you. Lincoln has truly hit a home run with this one. It has everything you could ask for - style, comfort, performance, utility, technology, and economy. And let's not forget about the quality - it's an American company, so you already know it's top-notch! If you choose to buy from another company, you're missing out on the American quality. There is nothing that the Asian 3 can offer that surpasses this vehicle.

Our MKT has been with us for over a year now, and it continues to exceed our expectations. It's spacious, comfortable, powerful, and surprisingly agile for a vehicle of its size. It's perfect for long road trips, and it's so comfortable that you might forget how long you've been driving (but don't worry, it will remind you when it's time for a break!). The electronic features are very effective, especially the adaptive cruise control, which is simply amazing. The lane departure system is equally useful and predictable. Some people find the styling to be controversial, but I personally think it's long, low, elegant, and even a bit menacing. The low center of gravity also helps with handling.

Out of the Q7, XC-90, MDX, Enclave and the MKT, I found the MKT to be the best car. The Eco boost engine is a great choice, providing almost 100 HP more than the Q7 while still maintaining better mileage. The interior space is also much better in the MKT. The Sync system is top notch, allowing me to easily control my iPod via the touch screen. The THX sound system is also off the charts. The level of integration with Sync/Nav/Voice Recognition is impressive and well thought out. Although I was initially leaning towards the Q7, after driving the MKT, it was an easy decision. I am very happy to have bought an American car over the Audi.
