2023 Toyota Corolla cross problems
The Toyota Corolla Cross (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラクロス, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra Kurosu) is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota since 2020. Adopting the Corolla nameplate, it is positioned as a more practical and larger alternative to the C-HR and built on the same TNGA-C (GA-C) platform as the E210 series Corolla. By size, the Corolla Cross is positioned between the smaller C-HR—with which it shares a platform—and the larger RAV4, in Toyota's global crossover SUV lineup.
It was first unveiled in Thailand in July 2020 along with other Southeast Asian markets and Taiwan in the same year, while its introduction in other markets started in 2021.
The twin model of the Corolla Cross, called the Toyota Frontlander (Chinese: 锋兰达; pinyin: Fēnglándá), is available exclusively in China and was introduced in late 2021.

Common 2023 Toyota Corolla cross problems
The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross, a compact SUV, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues primarily revolve around the engine, steering, and electrical system.
One of the most prevalent problems is the engine randomly shutting off, which has been reported by many owners. This issue seems to occur mostly when the windshield wipers are activated, and it is often accompanied by a message indicating low power steering. The problem has been reported in both the 2022 and 2023 models, as well as in the 2023 Toyota Corolla, which is a separate model but shares some components with the Corolla Cross. This issue can be particularly concerning for drivers, as it can happen in heavy traffic and potentially lead to accidents.
Another problem that has been reported is related to the electrical system. Some owners have experienced issues with the electrical system causing the engine to shut off randomly. It is unclear how the electrical system is directly affecting the engine, but all the electrical system complaints focus on how the engine shuts off randomly, often in heavy traffic.
The steering system has also been reported to have issues. Some owners have reported problems with the power steering, which can cause the steering wheel to become difficult to turn. This issue has been reported to occur mostly when the windshield wipers are activated, and it is often accompanied by a message indicating low power steering.
In addition to these issues, there have been complaints about the forward collision avoidance system, the fuel propulsion system, lane departure, brakes, and visibility/wiper. Many of these complaints have been reported to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), and there has been at least one complaint received about the model as of March 1, 2023.
It is important to note that these issues may not affect all 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross vehicles, and some owners may not experience any problems at all. However, these complaints highlight the importance of being aware of potential issues and addressing them promptly if they do occur. If you are experiencing any of these issues with your 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross, it is recommended that you contact your dealership or Toyota's customer service for assistance.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-12
- VIN: 7MUCAAAG6PV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: While driving in the rain with my windshield wipers on, my car suddenly stopped and the message on the car said “engine stopping, steering slowly” and after that it said “press on brakes slowly, engine stopping , steering slowly” and then it started to cut off. I forcibly put it in park and then the engine came back on and the car started to drive fine. An hour later, I turned my car back on and started driving and my screen went black. I turned the car off and turned it back on and it started working again. I think it could be an electrical issue but I don’t know for sure. I bought this car used with a little over 30k miles on it.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- VIN: 7MUFBABG5PV
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: the incident has occurred three times since i have had the vehicle, two were at low speed and one was at moderate speed, the brakes initially start to work but in the final stage of braking the brake pedal gets very hard and the brakes seem not to be working for about 1-2 seconds, my natural reaction has been to hit the pedal several times and finally it ends up working. i took the vehicle to the toyota service center and they told me that the brake pads are perfect, when evidently it is not a failure of the break pads, i am not a mechanic but it is evident that the breaks pads are not the problem. Luckyly I didn't have cars in front, 2 stops sign and 1 was a yield sign. Not lights or alerts in the car dashboard.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-13
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 7MUCAABG3PV
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I slowed down to turn into my daughter's driveway and park in front of their boat (maybe 5 mph if that). Suddenly, the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed on its own. I hit the brakes with no response. I had to veer to the left of the driveway onto the grass to avoid hitting the boat and garage. The car continued to accelerate (approximately 60-70+ mph) as I tried pumping the break pedal several times with no response (went to floor board with no resistance). I had to maneuver a narrow area at a high rate of speed to avoid hitting the house to my right and trees to my left. As I came down the hill, I approached a large embankment of a knocked over tree, dirt and brush pile. I knew I had to do something or it would be a serious impact. I quickly swerved to my right. I didn't know there was a ditch to the right of this embankment, but thankfully it brought my vehicle to a stop as my front left tire became flat and stuck in the dirt This was very shocking and traumatizing. We verified there was nothing on the floor that would have caused the gas to be accelerated. My car is currently on 3 wheels where it stopped (1 wheel suspended in the air). I received medical care at the ER for back pain. A CT scan showed I had a T12 Vertebrae compression fracture. I was prescribed a back brace, pain medication and an anti-inflammatory. I have also been alternating with a heat pad and ice pack, plus using a cane to help me get around. I will be contacting Toyota as well for an investigation into the problem, but I am scared to drive this vehicle again if if they do check it over. A police report was started on 14 Jul with the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, Oxford, MS, but it hasn't been completed. The report number is 24-003363. It wouldn't let me proceed selecting a report was filed and no report attached, so I chose no and provided report number.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-22
- VIN: 7MUFBABG1PV

- Summary: REAR TRUNK AREA LIGHT NOT BRIGHT.
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-09
- VIN: 7MUEAABG1PV
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Car would not restart after auto stop/start engaged and wipers on. I had to put car in park, turn off the engine then restart. Third time this has happened.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-26
- VIN: 7MUDAAAG8PV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Car just shuts off while driving or at stop lights or stop signs. Car won’t start , takes 10-20 minutes to cut back on after putting car in park or stopping at stop sign or light.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-18
- VIN: 7MUDAABGXPV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: My 2023 Corolla cross XLE, at least 5 times since ownership, has experienced a complete engine shut off at stop lights when driving in the rain with windshield wipers on. A message appears on the driver display saying that the engine shut off and the brake needs to be pressed hard and start button must be pushed to start the engine again. It seems to only occur in association with the engine stop/start capability that is engaged when the vehicle comes to a complete stop and the break pedal is pushed extra to engage the engine. This may sound like the normal start/stop function to save fuel, but it is not. Normally, the capability turns the engine back on upon release of the brake pedal. This issue is very different, in that the engine shut down is not normal, and requires in real time traffic, returning the vehicle to park and starting it up again before putting the gear in drive again. This is very dangerous in traffic and needs a recall fix as soon as possible.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-07
- VIN: 7MUCAABG5PV
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My brand new car will shut off when coming to a complete stop to save energy as designed. However, when I step on the gas to go, the car shuts completely off, forcing me to put my car in park and restart the engine. It will make a strange noise and all the dash lights will go on. I brought my car in and was told the problem was fixed. It was not. This is the 2nd time I have brought my car back for shutting off. It is very frighting for your car not to move when you are pressing on the gas pedal.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-10
- VIN: 7MUCAABG5PV
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The failure became persistent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the failure had not been diagnosed. The contact stated that the vehicle had been taken to the dealer twice due to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 100.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-08
- VIN: 7MUEAAAG5PV
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: There is an issue with the head lights. There are shadows in the lenses or covers that create a distraction while you are driving. I was told that Toyota did it not to have lights go into on coming cars but they make it hard for the driver to see also because it makes it look like something is in the road. I feel that they should change this cause it's a not to good of a design and it could cause a accident. Thanks
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-03
- VIN: 7MUCAAAG6PV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I have run into issues with the auto start/stop or brake hold being on while the windshield wipers are on. I get a "steering fluid low" message that comes up on the dashboard and the car becomes inoperable. I have to turn the car off and turn it back on in order to drive it again. This has been going on since I purchased the car in March 2023. I have not gone to a dealer around this issue as I've heard from other Toyota Corolla Cross owners have run into the same issue and that there is no remedy for the issue. There is no warning that this will happen, it happens unexpectedly and typically I'm sitting at stop signs or red lights.
AIR BAGS,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
- VIN: 7MUAAABG3PV
- Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: When I was driving, I stopped at a light, and the engine turned off. Lights, alarms went on and my car would not start. The dashboard read that there was engine failure. The car didn’t respond to pressing the brake, or shifting gears. I had to turn the car off and restart it for it to start working again. Thankfully, I was not on a hill where the car would’ve started rolling forwards or backwards. This had previously happened at another stop light. When we brought the vehicle in for a recall related to the steering column, they mentioned our car is not affected. But there seems to be an issue, and I’m concerned that it will endanger me and my passengers.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-05
- VIN: 7MUCAABG9PV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle stalled while driving with both front and rear wind shield wipers on. It was raining when this occurred. We were in heavy traffic and vehicle would not move, putting us at risk. The dealer states that they are unaware of this failure occurring in the 2023 corolla cross model. The failure happened suddenly without any type of warning.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
- VIN: 7MUDAABG3PV
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Purchased car in March 2023. August 2023, rainy day. Engine shut off when at light and foot on brake. Warning signals of "engine stopped, press brake firmly to restart,’ and ‘low power steering’.” displayed. Had to put car in park to restart. Took to Toyota dealership where purchased, they couldn't recreate. Happened again later that evening. Took pics of dash and took into dealership next day. They had it for almost 3 months. Said it was the second starter. Drove fine for about 3 months and then happened again on 3/8. Took in again and they could not recreate. Not safe to drive as it happens in heavy traffic somethimes.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-11
- VIN: 7MUFBABG3PV
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Exploding Sunroof Issue: I was driving to work in my 2023 Toyota Cross on [XXX] at approximately [XXX] and I was traveling approximately 25 miles per hour when I heard what sounded like grinding glass and then wind noise quickly started coming in, although at the time I didn't know where it was coming from so I looked around to see if the windows were all rolled up. I slid the cover of the sunroof partially back and glass rained down and at that time I realized the sunroof exploded. I took photos and a video of the sun roof and it looked like it blew outward. Nothing struck the sunroof and it seemed to have just spontaneously blew up and outward. I had only 2,950 miles on my car and I assumed it was a defect in glass or installation so my husband took it to the Toyota dealership service center in Carlsbad Ca where we purchased the car and they informed him it was not covered under warranty. They gave him an 800 number to call to find out why the warranty was denied and when he called they told them they would get back to him and that they would not put the denial in any written form as he requested. As of today March 17th, no one has called back so now we start the difficult process of trying to get answers from Toyota. Since we needed the car back and couldn't wait from Toyota's response, we were forced to turn it in to the insurance company and pay the deductible. After doing some research, I'm finding out exploding sunroofs is a known issue on Toyotas. I believe this is an extreme safety hazard and am surprised the company was quick to deny it as a warranty issue. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-13
- VIN: 7MUCAAAGXPV
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The car shuts off completely when I brake at a stop light. When I lifted off my foot from the brake pedal it didn't restart. It had completely shut off and I had to put the car in park and restart in order to drive. This is dangerous as when the light turned green I could not move and cars behind me are already in drive. This incident has happened 5 times and I took the car into Toyota and they said they could not diagnose the code.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
- VIN: 7MUBAABG9PV
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have contacted the Toyota company several times over the internal multimedia system in the vehicle I purchased in October 2023. This system requires that I download a poorly developed application on my phone from Toyota in order to fully interact with the system. I will not put any app on my personal phone that is a potential security risk and is one of the poorest rated apps on the app store where it resides. Because I won't add this awful Toyota tracking device on my phone, I am required to interact with this panel to distraction while driving, which is causing safety issues. I would like to know how it is legal for a corporation like this to require that someone download an app with security risks on their phone, in order to use an interior car function, which can cause major safety issues because it is so distracting while driving.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-14
- VIN: 7MUDAABG9PV
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The drivers seat side plastic panel where the control knobs are, the clips keep breaking from sitting. I’ve got it replaced once already and it has happened again
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-03
- VIN: 7MUAAAAG8PV
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: When driving to work it’s the 4 times the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross turns on the engine light and starts beeping with the power steering low message and shuts down and I am unable to continue driving I have taken it 4 times to Toyota dealership with them continue to say no issue is found. For me to get the vehicle working again I have to completely turn it off lock it and then unlock it and turn it back on. This is unacceptable and a big hazard issue because it does this in the middle of traffic without any indication.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: 7MUFBABG8PV
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The rear running lights on my new Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid SE were not working as they were wired improperly from the factory. I was pulled over by a policeman driving at night because my car was not visible at night due to the lack of running lights. This is very dangerous as this is a factory defect that can cause rear end collisions! I immediately made an appointment with Toyota and the dealer told me upon thorough inspection that it was a factory defect. I was given a loaner car as my car is unsafe to drive. However it is taking Toyota a very long time to fix the problem. I believe that many other Toyota Corolla Cross cars have this wiring defect and that these are accidents waiting to happen! Thank God that policeman pulled me over and notified me as it may have saved me from a serious accident. I believe that all Toyota Corolla Cross SE 2023 should be recalled to have the rear running lights inspected!
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-27
- VIN: 7MUCAABG0PV
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Stopped at a stop light and the engine automatically shut off as expected, however warnings appeared on the dashboard indicating that the engine stopped and power steering was low. I had to turn on my hazards at a very busy intersection as the light turned green so I could completely turn off the vehicle and restart it. This happened twice in the same trip two days ago and has happened once before a few months ago. Very dangerous.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-22
- VIN: 7MUDAAAG0PV
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: This has happened several times since I have bought the car in October 2023. Every time I am driving in the rain, stopped at a red light, with the windshield wipers engaged my car completely shuts off (no it is not the auto-start/stop feature). I receive the message stating “engine stopped, press brake firmly to restart. Power steering low.” Everytime I have been at a red light and in order to get the car to start again, I have to put my car in park, then turn it back on. This is a very dangerous issue as I worry if it will happen while I am driving with wind shield wipers engaged. So far it has happened at a red light everytime. I have already taken it into the dealer and they thought they solved the problem with a software update, but it just happened again, three times today (1/22/24).

I like that it's not too big or too small and has safety features to help new drivers.
-
This small SUV is one of the more affordable options available in the market. It provides a comfortable ride and easy handling. While the rear compartment is ample, leg room for rear passengers is a little less. Unfortunately, there is no rear window wash or wiper, and the windows are not tinted, which can be bothersome on sunny days. Additionally, you need to press the buttons on the key fob to open the vehicle, it doesn't automatically open if the fob is nearby. The engine is not very powerful, so it may take some time to get up to speed. If you own an Apple phone, it's easier to connect to your phone, but you will need to download apps to use the phone and radio.

Smooth Drive. Great all-around visibility. Comfortable interior. Reliable.
-
I love my Cross! It has plenty of power for what it is. I think some people may be expecting too much power for what they're buying. The computer-simulated shifts are well-simulated compared to other CVTs out there. It also has a good ride for what we are buying. I just don't understand why people are being so hard on this compact CUV. I mean, it's a Corolla, not a Highlander!

Toyota did everything very well in this Corolla Cross. After doing much research, I found this car to be the best in its category.

I purchased a Toyota 2023 Cross four weeks ago and experienced a couple of stalls, one on the first day of use. After consulting with the dealership, I learned that the issue was related to the button in front of the shifter, specifically the circle with an A on it. Toyota is aware of this issue and I have since kept the button off to avoid any further stalls. While this has been frustrating, I still believe that the car is of good quality overall. I am hopeful that Toyota will find a solution to this issue soon.

We recently purchased the Toyota Corolla Cross XLE with the Platinum Coverage plan, mainly for my wife. During the first week, we experienced some unusual issues when going up an on-ramp. The car had trouble increasing speed and almost stalled. We thought it might be the torque converter, but there were no hard codes. Later, the problem went away. It only occurred when the car was cold (outside temperature was 40 degrees). We also had an issue with the rear door sticking when opening, but we have an appointment with Toyota to get it fixed. We have only driven about 100 miles so far. Although the inside and outside of the car are nice, there are some design flaws. For example, the platform charger is not very practical. The phone does not stay in place, and my wife's iPhone does not charge because of the camera's round protruding edge. My Android phone also would not charge. However, my home platform charger works fine, but it does not work in the Toyota Cross. Additionally, the mirror adjustment is small and deep behind the door handle, which can be difficult to reach for people with larger hands. The center console storage box is also quite small and not very useful. The auto-stop feature when at a light can be annoying, but there is a button on the console to allow the motor to keep running if needed. The legroom is also a bit tight for me, as I am 6'-1When I open the glove box, it almost hits my knees. I find the one-touch windows annoying because they automatically go down all the way every time I put them down. This is especially frustrating when it's raining and I only want to crack the window open. Unfortunately, I can't do that without getting wet. Despite the JBL speakers, the sound system needs improvement. The menu display also needs to be redesigned to make selecting items easier. I had a similar problem with my son's new Corolla XLE, which he bought just 300 miles ago. It took me an hour to perform a function link between my phone and the Corolla while traveling in his car. On the bright side, the car is good on gas, much better than my other car which is a 2.4L. There are many features on this car similar to the Volvo, but configuring everything can be annoying. On December 11, 2023, I noticed that the right rear door keeps sticking. I can feel and hear it get stuck somewhere around the trim or door lock. I also noticed some markings on the rear door latch mounted on the frame - rubbing and scratches, so it is not aligned. Additionally, the right front passenger window always seems to have moisture on it after sitting. When I run the defrost, all the windows clear up and seem dry, but the right front passenger window stays wet or damp for many hours unless I wipe it off. I am concerned about a seal leak in the door.

The car has a comfortable ride and lots of safety features. However, it may feel underpowered when accelerating on first gear.

I recently purchased a Toyota Corolla Cross XLE 2022 and have noticed some areas for improvement. The acceleration could be more responsive, especially when compared to my previous Scion Tc. Additionally, I believe the dash material could be of higher quality and the console could be slightly larger. I also find it inconvenient that the window button needs to be held down to open but not to close. The lane departure feature being on the side mirrors seems unnecessary given the large screen in the vehicle. While the vehicle is not completely soundproof, it is still a reliable and enjoyable ride. Although the steering could be firmer, overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and look forward to driving it more.

The biggest issue I had with this vehicle was the lack of legroom. Even at just over 5'6, I found my knees starting to feel strained after a few weeks of driving. The rear passenger section is also quite tight. I remember sitting in the back for a trip and being surprised by how cramped it felt. However, I did appreciate how smoothly and safely it drove, even if it was a bit slow. Ultimately, I decided to trade it in for something roomier and faster, which I found much more satisfying.
