2000 Lexus Rx300 problems
The Lexus RX (Japanese: レクサス・RX, Hepburn: Rekusasu RX) is a luxury crossover SUV sold since 1998 by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. Originally released in its home market of Japan in late 1997 as the Toyota Harrier, export sales began in March 1998 as the Lexus RX.
Considered as the first luxury crossover SUV, five generations of the RX have been produced to date, the first being compact in size, and the latter classified as mid-size. Both front- and four-wheel drive configurations have been used on the RX series, and several gasoline powertrain options, including V6 engines and hybrid systems, have been offered. In the Lexus model lineup, the RX sits below the larger Lexus LX (marketed as the Toyota Land Cruiser body-on-frame SUVs outside North America, respectively), and above the shorter and less wider, but taller GX SUV. The name "RX" stands for "Radiant Crossover". It has also been labelled as "Recreational Cross Country" in some markets. The RX's current Toyota counterpart is the Highlander/Kluger; past counterparts included the Harrier and Venza.
The first-generation RX 300, fitted with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, began sales in 1998. The Japanese market Harrier released in 1997 also offered a 2.2-liter inline-four, later uprated to 2.4 liters. The second-generation RX 300 (3.0-liter V6) and RX 330 (3.3-liter V6) models went on sale in 2003, with both variants supplanted by the more powerful RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) in 2006. Like the previous series, a 2.4-liter inline-four engine was sold alongside the 3.0-liter V6 in the Japanese market Harrier. In 2005, a hybridized gasoline-electric version of the 3.3-liter second-generation model was made available as the RX 400h in export markets and as the Harrier Hybrid in Japan. For the third generation released in 2009, both RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) and RX 450h (3.5-liter V6 hybrid) models were initially offered, with an entry-level RX 270 (2.7-liter inline-four) offered by Lexus in some Asian markets, including in Japan, since 2010. Since the release of the third generation, Japanese sales have occurred under the RX name as opposed to Harrier as had been the case previously. In the fourth generation, a turbocharged (2.0-liter inline-four) RX 200t/300 model was introduced to replace the previous 2.7-liter unit.
The RX has been assembled at Toyota Motor Kyushu since launch. The RX and RX Hybrid were the first Lexus models to be built outside Japan, with North American market versions produced at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada plant in Cambridge, Ontario beginning 2003 (RX) and expanded in 2014 (RX Hybrid). Hybrid transaxles are built at the Kokura plant in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka since 2009.

Common 2000 Lexus Rx300 problems
The Lexus RX 300, a luxury crossover SUV produced in the early 2000s, has been praised for its smooth ride and reliability. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain common problems. This article will discuss these issues based on complaints from owners of the 2000 Lexus RX 300.
- Engine Misfire and Idling Issues: Engine misfires are a common problem in high-mileage RX 300s, often caused by faulty ignition coils.
- Long Stopping Time: The RX 300's regenerative braking system is designed to reduce wear on the brakes, but it can also lead to corrosion buildup due to reduced brake usage. This can result in the need for frequent brake disc and pad replacement, approximately every 15,000 miles.
- Steering Wheel Vibration and Clunking Noises: The lower control arm bushes in the RX 300 can wear out quickly, causing excessive steering wheel vibration and clunking noises. Replacing these bushes can resolve the issue and is relatively simple.
- Power Steering Issues: Power steering problems have been reported in the RX 300, which can be caused by issues with the power steering pump or hose, as well as problems with the steering rack and pinion . Regular maintenance and inspection of these components can help prevent issues.
- Audio System Quality: Some owners have reported dissatisfaction with the sound system quality in the RX 300, citing poor sound quality and limited features compared to other vehicles in its class.
- Fuel Efficiency: The RX 300's fuel efficiency has been criticized, with some owners reporting poor gas mileage for a vehicle of its size.
In conclusion, while the Lexus RX 300 is generally considered a reliable vehicle, it is not without its common problems, particularly in high-mileage examples. Regular maintenance and inspection of key components can help prevent many of these issues and ensure the vehicle's longevity.
What is the common problem with the RX300?
A common issue with the RX300 is rapidly burning out of the engine valves. If you try to dismiss this problem, then the engine will quickly burn out and die. It used to be that burnt out, or crushed engine valves would mean a complete engine replacement, but you can now order the valves directly from BreakerYard.
How many miles does a Lexus RX300 last?
While the average vehicle tends to stay on the roads for around 150,000 miles, the Lexus RX exceeds this by quite a lot. With the proper care and smart driving habits, you can be driving for 250,000 miles or more!
What is the problem if the car has a check engine Lexus RX300?
Lexus RX300 Check Engine Light Flashing
Other common reasons for a Check Engine Light are faulty head gasket, a malfunction with the fuel injection system, dirty mass airflow sensor, faulty emissions control part, damaged oxygen sensor, or defective spark plugs to name a few.
Does the Lexus RX300 have a timing belt or chain?
belt
It does not have a chain, it has a belt.

- Summary: TRANSMISSION BEGAN NOT SHIFTING SMOOTHLY AND MECHANIC PUT IN TRANSMISSION FLUID BUT COULD NOT LOCATE ANY ISSUES WITH IT. TRANMISSION SOON WENT COMPLETELY OUT AT 88,000 MILES WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. ONLY OWNED SUV FOR A YEAR AND A HALF. HAD INSPECTED BEFORE PURCHASE AND NO PROBLEMS NOTED. VERY DISAPPOINTED AND WILL NOT PAY SEVERAL GRAND TO BUY ANOTHER TRANSMISSION WHICH IS MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE CAR. LEXUS SHOULD BE ASHAMED. JUST FOUND OUT HOW TO REPORT THIS HERE.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-09-08
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: AT APPROXIMATELY 150,000 MY LEXUS RX 300 SEIZED AFTER PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT. I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR AND IT WOULD NOT MOVE/TURNOVER. OBVIOUSLY, HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AND THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I PURCHASED A REBUILT TRANSMISSION TO THE TUNE OF ABOUT $4,000. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS MODEL OF LEXUS REPEATEDLY HAVING THE TRANSMISSION FAIL. I'M WONDERING WHY THE NHTSA DOES NOT ISSUE A RECALL AT THIS POINT - AT LEAST INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE., SO THOSE WHO OWN THESE VEHICLES CAN RECOUP SOME OF THE COST FOR THE FAILURES OF THIS TRANSMISSION.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-04-26
- VIN: JTJHF10U520
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: MY 2000 LEXUS RX300 HAD AN UNEXPLAINED SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHERE THE VEHICLE ALMOST KILLED ME AND MY SON. I WAS DRIVING RESIDENTIAL BACKROADS BY MY HOUSE, ACCELERATED SLIGHTLY TO GET UP A HILL AND THAT'S WHEN IT TOOK OFF. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS UNRESPONSIVE, THE EMERGENCY BREAK WAS UNRESPONSIVE, I PULLED THE FLOOR MAT OUT FOR GOOD MEASURE, NOTHING WORKED, IT KEPT ACCELERATING AT A HIGH RATE UNTIL I FINALLY SLAMMED IT THROUGH GEARS TO "PARK" TO GET IT TO A STOP. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE LEXUS DEALERSHIP, WHERE THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER EVEN TOLD ME WHEN IT STARTED THE CAR TO GET IT UP ON THE TRUCK, AFTER BEING TURNED OFF FOR OVER 12 HOURS, IT WAS STILL RED LINING THE ENGINE, AND EVEN LURCHED FORWARD BUT BECAUSE THE CAR WAS IN PARK, IT DIDN'T CRASH INTO THE BACK OF THE TOW TRUCK. LEXUS INVESTIGATED THE CAR AND DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. THEY WOULDN'T TELL ME WHY IT HAPPENED. I DEMAND AN EXPLANATION AND A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE - ONE THAT DOESN'T HAVE A HISTORY OF HAVING SUA PROBLEMS. I FEAR FOR MY LIFE EVERYTIME I HAVE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-07-21
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE TRANSMISSION ON MY RX300 JUST GAVE OUT. IT WAS REGULARLY MAINTAINED - THE FLUID LEVELS WERE CHECKED AND HAD A MAJOR OVERHAUL ON IT BEFORE I GAVE IT TO MY DAUGHTER WHO GOES TO SCHOOL IN HOUSTON, WHERE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED. SHE ONLY USES IT FOR LOCAL COMMUTE - NOT LONG DISTANCE DRIVING. THE INTENT WAS TO GIVE HER A DEPENDABLE VEHICLE! IT I HAVE ABOUT 149000 MILES ON IT. THE REPLACEMENT COST IS ENORMOUS - MORE THAN THE VEHICLE IS WORTH. I DEMAND BETTER QUALITY FOR A LUXURY VEHICLE. OBVIOUSLY IT IS A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED. I NOW SEE NUMEROUS TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS REPORTED ON THIS VEHICLE. WHY ARE WE ALLOWING SUCH LEMONS ON OUR STREETS!

I HAD TO PAY $128 TO HAVE IT TOWED TO DEALERSHIP ON 01/04/2016 BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT ACCEPT ANY DIAGNOSTICS FROM ANY ONE ELSE NOR PAY FOR TOW. I WAS DELAYED IN EFFORTS BECAUSE OF HOLIDAY. PLEASE MAKE THEM ACCOUNTABLE.

- Summary: WITH LITTLE/NO WARNING, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (2WD) FAILED. ALL GEARS (P,R,N,D,2,1) WORKED LIKE NEUTRAL GEAR. IF THIS WOULD'VE OCCURRED A FEW MINUTES EARLIER, MY CHILDREN AND I (LOCATED AT A SHARP TURN OVER A STEEP HILL) COULD'VE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. APPARENTLY, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN LEXUS RX300'S FROM YEAR 1999-2002. HOW MANY EARLY TRANSMISSION FAILURES DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A RECALL? *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-05-23
- VIN: JT6HF10U8Y0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: PURCHASED CAR FROM GUY AND FOUND OUT TWO DAYS LATER PAPER WORK IN THE GLOVE BOX THAT CONTAINED A CARFAX SHOWING AN ODOMETER ROLLBACK. 2009 IT HAD 155,000 AND IN 2012 IT HAS 110,000. DUE TO MILEAGE DISCREPANCY WE TRIED TO SELL ON LOCAL SITE BUT WHEN EXPLAINED THE MILEAGE SITUATION NEVER HEARD BACK FROM POTENTIAL BUYER. ENDED UP TRADING IT IN AND TAKING A LOSS- WE PAID 4500.00 AND BECAUSE THE MILEAGE IS "UNKNOWN" WE COULD ONLY GET 2,250 FOR THE TRADE IN, PLUS PAYING THE TAXES ON THIS. I TRULY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS NOT REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES REGARDLESS OF AGE TO DISCLOSE THE MILEAGE. IF THIS WOULD HAPPEN, MAYBE THIS ODOMETER ROLLBACK WOULDN'T HAPPEN AS OFTEN AND IF IT DID, YOU COULD ACTUALLY PROVE WHO DID IT. I CAN'T PROVE HE DID IT, BUT I'M SURE HE KNEW ABOUT IT BEFORE SELLING CONSIDERING HE HAD A CARFAX IN A LEXUS FOLDER WITH A LETTER FROM DEALER IN CA LOOKING TO REPLENISH THEIR USED INVENTORY & THE CARFAX IN THE GLOVE BOX WAS PRINTED ON THE SAME DAY IT SHOWS ON THE CARFAX THE CAR WAS AT THAT DEALER. HE INSIST HE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THIS, BUT WHY WOULD YOU HAVE A FOLDER IN THE GLOVE BOX THAT HAS THIS LETTER, AND WHY WOULD THE DEALER NEED TO RUN A CARFAX TO FIX HIS "KEY" AS THEY STATE HE DID. I DIDN'T REALIZE THIS WAS AN ISSUE UNTIL IT HAPPENED AND I WAS "GOOGLING" HOW TO REPORT IT. I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT PREVIOUS ACCIDENTS, FLUID LEVELS, DRIVING IT TO MAKE SURE IT DIDN'T OVERHEAT AND ALL OF THAT- I NEVER THOUGHT OF THE ODOMETER BEING TAMPERED WITH. ALSO, IF YOU DO A SEARCH WITH THE VIN USING ONLY THE STATE REGISTRATION SITE- EVERYTHING CHECKS OUT FINE BECAUSE THE MILEAGE IS NOT REPORTED OVER 100,000, IT'S "EXEMPT"- THIS IS CRAZY- WHY WOULD THEY EVEN HAVE SITES THAT USE THIS METHOD FOR CONSUMERS IF THE INFORMATION IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE VEHICLE WHEN IT'S REGISTERED? *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-11-03
- VIN: JT6GF10U8Y0
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: ON 11/03/12 I PUT THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER INTO REVERSE AND BACKED OUT OF A DRIVEWAY INTO THE STREET. I THEN MOVED THE SHIFTER FROM "R", PAST "N" INTO "D" TO MOVE FORWARD, BUT THERE WAS NO ENGAGEMENT INTO ANY GEAR. THE SHIFTER JUST MOVED FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS WITH NO RESISTANCE. THERE WAS PREVIOUS NO INDICATION OF ANY PROBLEM. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. I DIDN'T WANT TO BE HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE, SO I GOT OUT OF THE LEXUS AND PUSHED IT BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. ON 11/5/13 I DISASSEMBLED THE DASH AND SHIFTING CONSOLE AND FOUND THAT THE SHIFT CABLE WAS NO LONGER ATTACHED TO THE SHIFTING LEVER. THERE WERE PIECES OF SOME KIND OF PLASTIC RETAINER BROKEN AROUND THE CABLE TERMINATION "LOOP" AND LYING ON THE FLOOR. I STILL HAVE THE BROKEN PARTS. ON 11/5/12 I CALLED LEXUS CORPORATE OFFICE AT 800-255-3987. I EXPLAINED THAT I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED (OR WORSE). I WANTED THIS FIXED, OR AT LEAST THE PART THAT HOLDS THE CABLE ONTO THE SHIFTER. THEY SAID I NEEDED TO HAVE A "REPAIR ORDER #" TO PROCEED. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO LEXUS OF PALM BEACH BY HOLDING THE CABLE ON THE SHIFTER WHEN I NEEDED TO SHIFT. THEIR SERVICE MANAGER INSPECTED, TOOK PICTURES, AND PROVIDED #7200550. I THEN CALLED CORPORATE BACK WITH THAT #. I RECEIVED A 11/20/2012 LETTER FROM LEXUS CORPORATE. THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY PARTS/REPAIRS BASED ON WARRANTY EXPIRATION. ON 1/13 I FINALLY HAD TIME TO EFFECT A D.I.Y REPAIR. I MADE A NYLON SLEEVE FOR INSIDE THE CABLE "LOOP" AND USED A COMMON E-CLIP TO RETAIN THE LOOP ONTO THE SHIFTER LEVER ROD. PLEASE SEE PICTURES AT HTTP://SDRV.MS/10O9RFN FOR DAMAGE AND CORRECTIVE ACTION . HAVE ACCIDENTS/DEATHS ALREADY OCCURRED DUE TO THIS? HOW MANY NEEDLESS $6000 TRANSMISSION REBUILDS HAS LEXUS GOT OUT OF THIS? THIS REPAIR CAN BE DONE IN UNDER 30 MINUTES FOR ABOUT $2 IN PARTS. PLEASE KEEP OTHERS FROM AVOIDABLE HARM. *TR

Great SUV! It drives like a car and performs like an SUV. It's very dependable and fun to drive. Although, it seems like you're having a few problems with the fuel coils, windshield washer motor, and wiring harness, despite having less than 80k miles.
-
We bought our car used with 78K miles in 2005 and took a chance on Toyota quality. We are so glad we did! Our car has had no problems to this day, even with 110K miles. We have taken good care of it with regular servicing, including timing belt replacement, new tires, new brakes, and a new alternator over three years, and it is still running strong. We plan to keep it for another year or two.
-
Hi there! I noticed that you recently purchased a certified 2000 model, but you're not quite sure if it's the right fit for you. I understand that the turning radius and fuel economy may not be up to your expectations, and the ride may lack a bit of pep. Additionally, I can see that the moonroof shade is causing some frustration due to its shoddy materials and tendency to move forward with sudden braking. It would have been great if they had included a compass as part of the info screen. I hope this information helps you make a decision that you're happy with!
-
This car is actually my second favorite ever! It's been with me for 20 years now and has clocked 163,000 miles. I've been very careful with it, making sure to change the oil every 3000 miles, rotate the tires every 5000 miles, and keep up with all the scheduled maintenance. As a result, I've had no problems with it whatsoever. The only minor issues I've had are that the driver and front seats are a bit too short, and the turning radius is a bit too tight.

You've made an excellent choice with this SUV, especially if you live in an area with snow. As someone who has owned two Lexuses, I can confidently say that I wouldn't choose anything else. The only downside is the gas mileage, but overall it's a great vehicle.

I recently purchased a vehicle and initially everything seemed great, especially considering its age. The car drove smoothly, the engine was quiet, the transmission shifted perfectly, the handling was nice, the seats were comfortable, and the body was in great shape. For the price, it seemed like a steal, so I bought it without any hesitation. However, on my drive home, I noticed that the overdrive on the transmission wasn't working and it was stuck in 3rd gear, causing the engine to rev almost 5k RPMs on the highway! I was worried that there was something wrong with the transmission, so I took it to my mechanic right away. Fortunately, my mechanic found that both knock sensors were bad, which put the transmission into

I have had some issues with my Lexus, including the alternator and various sensors, which have required repairs about once a year at a cost of at least $500. Unfortunately, I have had a bad experience and will not be purchasing a Lexus again. I am considering a Ford for my next car. I once broke down 100 miles from home and had to hitchhike, which was a scary experience. Overall, I have had a difficult time with this car.

This car has several issues, including frequent sensor malfunctions, ignition coil failures, and difficulty changing the back spark plugs due to the manifold's placement. Additionally, the check engine light often comes on, causing the car to not shift into overdrive. While these problems may be frustrating, it's important to note that they can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs. It's worth considering seeking professional assistance to address these issues and get the car running smoothly again. As with any car brand, there may be occasional issues, but Toyota and Lexus are still known for their overall reliability and quality.

Excellent quality and drivability. 5 years old and still looks current. Bought the car new and loved it. However, over the years, some small annoyances have started to wear on me, such as having to stop for gas every 300 miles and having to back up when making u-turns and when parking due to the large turning radius.
